NIGHT HAS FALLEN
BradyGames has done it again with their Tenchu 2/Birth Of The Assassins strategy guide. It's all here : the game basics; how to use the mission editor; the walkthroughs for Rikimaru, Ayame, and Tatsumaru; and the secret codes. The maps are clear, the screen shots are plentiful (and brighter then BG's Tenchu/SA guide), and the directions are concise. To further aid you, tips and notes are liberally sprinkled throughout. In addition to giving boss strategy, they've even added the weapons that they carry as well as their HPs. A great guide to a great follow-up game. Night has fallen.

Terrorism and America: A Commonsense Strategy for a Democratic Society (BCSIA Studies in International Security)

This levelheaded appraisal of how the United States--and, indeed, any democratic society--can combat terrorism is a good policy primer on a subject that continues to confound law-abiding nations. Drawing on the lessons learned from terrorist acts such as the Oklahoma City and World Trade Center bombings, Heymann offers advice that is sometimes obvious (intelligence gathering is critical) and occasionally counterintuitive (military action, though popular, is not a very effective deterrent). He is most sensitive to the fact that democracies cannot become security states--governments, in other words, shouldn't defend their liberty by subverting it. Most important, Heymann recognizes that terrorism can't be stopped, but that perhaps it can be managed: "We can deal with it; we can discourage it; but we cannot end it completely any more than we can end violence for other purposes." A bleak fact of modern life, and proof of why Heymann's insights are so welcome. --John J. Miller
Average review score:

An excellent introductory text on this subject.
Phillip Heymann offers a clear-minded, if somewhat cursory, appraisal of the difficulties terrorist activity presents democratic and "open" societies. He manages in just a little over 150 pages to clearly identify the dangers over-reaction to either terrorist threats or actions can pose to a society, as well the risks posed when a terrorist incident involves more than one country, without burdening the reader with too much detail.

This is not, however, an intellectual treatise or theoretical work. Heymann very clearly illustrates his points by examining specific incidents and their consequences involving not merely the US, but Italy, the UK, Germany, Israel, Columbia, and others. Perhaps most illustrative is his examination of the 1985 Achille Lauro hijacking, which drives home the complications arising when multiple governments and competing policies become involved, and Chapter 7 on the criminal just system, which touches on everything from the difficulties of investigation to witness intimidation to the use (and possible abuse) of deadly force to the issue of civil rights.

By the end, Heymann delivers on his promise of a "common sense" strategy for dealing with both domestic and international terrorism. Pragmatically admitting the danger of terrorism can never be completely eliminated, it can at least be minimized by a combination of steps, including more targetted intelligence gathering, greater sharing of information with our allies, resisting giving into terrorist demands, and better training of law enforcement in dealing with terrorism.

The book has two small failings however. First, it provides only a cursory examination of what terrorism itself involves. While he devotes an entire chapter to the phenomenon of political violence, Heymann gives only passing mention to the motives and actions that could be involved and almost no examinaiton of the differences between them. This leaves the reader with little appreciation of the differences, both in motive and method, between the decades of bombings committed by Basque Sepratists in Spain and the more sinister activities of the Aum Shinrikyo cult between 1994 and 1995. An in-depth analysis would have actually detracted from Heymann's intent, but a few pages on these distinctions wouldn't have hurt the text.

Secondly, he concentrates almost exclusively on conventional forms of terrorism. He mentions the threats of nuclear, chemical, and biological (NBC) terrorism, but does so in context of conflicts between states, stating the prospect of NBC terrorism is "unlikely". While this is certainly true now, this may well change in coming years. And the specter of an incident like that of the Tokyo subway gassing done by Aum Shinrikyo in 1995 can significantly change a government's options in terms of response. This is actually a minor point given the number of excellent books on the subject already out there, but even a short examination of the dangers NBC presents would have helped here.

In summary, Terrorism and America makes an excellent starting point for readers interested in either terrorism or government's response against it. It should not be mistaken for any ground-breaking analysis on the subjects or a grand strategy for making society impervious to terrorism; the former would take a book easily three times its size, and the latter is quite simply impossible. This is as clear-headed and pragmatic an work on the subject you're likely to find. I highly recommend it.

An excellent starting point for further analysis.

A sober, serious, and highly analytical survey
Ably edited by Lawrence Hogan, Terrorism: Defensive Strategies For Individuals, Companies And Governments is a sober, serious, and highly analytical survey of the worldwide threat of terrorism, its various manifestations, history, and trends, with numerous indexes focusing on terrorist activity in different locations around the globe. Critical, meticulous, and filled with straight no-nonsense information by knowledgeable contributors, Terrorism is a essential reading for everyone trying to better understand this very real and dangerous threat and a highly recommended acquisition for corporate, governmental and public library reference collections.

A totality on terrorism
Mr. Hogan has brought together some of the finest minds in the field to provide an in-depth appreciation for the history, psychological mindset, weapon availability, and potential acts of those who would do harm to this nation. Although it discusses in detail case studies of recent attacks, its most valued contribution is to allow an understanding of the multiple discipline approach to prevention and reaction. This team building between responders, some of which have not been considered a high priority in the past, strongly supports the sequential unified command approach to emergency management. It is this team approach, not single agency dominance over terrorism that makes this book so timely.

Theater Tips and Strategies for Jury Trials

Necessary Book for Trial Lawyers
Theatre Tips and Strategies for Jury Trials is a necessary book for every trial lawyer. It is entertaining, well organized, and well written. It can be your secret weapon to be a better trial lawyer. I wish I had read it years ago, especially before I struck a jury last week in a criminal case involving the felony charge of obstructing a police officer. The book is a treasure trove. I met David Ball at a seminar in Toccoa, Georgia in March of 2003. He participated and gave helpful tips in a small group I was in. His book is almost conversational. I have purchased his other books on Damages and doing focus groups. I URGE ALL TRIAL LAWYERS TO READ THIS BOOK. It's one of those books that you'll reread (or should reread) before every trial. Thanks David Ball.

A Necessary Tool for the Trial Lawyer
Professor Ball uses his special skill in Theater Arts and perceptions of jury reaction to instruct the advocate in trial techniques.
I often refer to this book in CLE presentations along with Wellman's work on Cross Examination.

Can't say enough good things
This is far and away the best book on compulsive eating I have read. Every paragraph contains a nugget of wisdom, a motiviational statement that shoots straight to the heart, or an insight that will leave you breathless if you share this affliction.

If you have a problem controlling your eating -- if you eat from stress, from boredom, from emotion, or if you just find it difficult to resist temptation, or stop when you start ... you HAVE to read this book. Rather than start ANOTHER "diet" next Monday like you always do, grab a copy of this book and start a new way of life.

Excellent supplement to the study of the art of war
The principles of conflict apply to all forms of competition: business, war, and games. Readers from all fields will find tremendous insight into the art of deception and surprise which leads to decisive results in a competitive situation. For readers of the Art of War by Sun Tzu, this is a beneficial supplement.

Several books on strategy exist and are full of theory but lack in terms of case examples of the strategies in application. The Thirty-Six Stratems takes 36 individual tactics, gives the high-level description of each, then provides an example of the application in historical China. The first 18 strategems are designed for situations where one has the advantage, the other 18 for when one is at a disadvantage. Interestingly, the strategems span from tactical situations to examples of political manipulation that can be used to one's advantage.

The one problem with this book is its availability. It took me a while to find; mine is an AsiaPac production in comic book form. Nonetheless the content is there and it has added tremendous value to the competitive spheres in my life.

strategems
A must for the self-employed...... Teaches the ancient tactics that you don't ever want used on you in business but..... they are everyday.

Perspectives on an Uncertain Future
This is one in a series of "Strategy & Business" books from Booz-Allen & Hamilton, published by Jossey-Bass. All are first-rate and well-worth checking out. In this book, Joel Kurtzman edits a series of in-depth interviews of 12 of the most influential thought leaders during the last decade. Obviously, some will quibble with the number and/or with specific selections. However, although several may be unfamiliar to you, after you read the interviews I think you will agree with me that all 12 are eminently worthy. They are: Charles Handy, Minoru Makihara, Keshub Mahindra, C.K. Prahalad, John Kao, Paul M. Romer, Stan Shih, Norbert Walter, John T. Chambers, Warren Bennis, Gary Hamel, and Jean-Rene Fourtou. In the Foreword, Brian N. Dickie (president and COO, Booz-Allen & Hamilton) suggests that "the new agenda" for CEOs and their top[ teams (managing for growth, business process redesign for the next generation, and new organization structures) and then suggests that "the winners will be those CEOs who can integrate the new agenda with their own clear vision while simplifying the execution challenge and inspiring their organizations to perform beyond expectations." It is from this perspective that Kurtzman then provides the 12 interviews. None of them fully addresses all of the issues but together, the CEOs provide insights of substantial value to decision-makers at all levels of organizational configuration. Here are three brief excerpts, obviously taken out of context but nonetheless thought-provoking:

"With people scattered around the world, you really have to let them be on their own. The assignments are often difficult and you need them for specific purposes. Those purposes may change. That means you have to run the organization on the basis of professionalism and trust -- and subsidiarity." Charles Handy, Professor, London Business School, and author of The Age of Unreason and The Age of Paradox

"The management of creativity is more intimate [than the traditional management skill set that is appropriate to a large, complex industrial-era organization]. By that I mean that it deals with an individual's personal, psychological landscape. It deals with the way you create relationships. It deals with creating an atmosphere and environment that support the creative process. As a result, it is a management skill set that is inherently psychological and that encourages desired outcomes rather than demands those outcomes." John Kao, Harvard Business School, and author of Jamming

"What we have to do is work out a balance between tolerating some monopolies and monopoly profits -- since that's how we motivate people to discover new recipes -- with competition to keep prices low and distribute products widely. We encourage this competition by granting property rights that are partial or incomplete. In practice, what this means is that while in the physical economy with diminishing returns there are perfect prices, in the knowledge economy with its increasing returns there are no perfect prices." Paul M. Romer, Stanford Business School

Kurtzman has exceptional skills as both interviewer and editor, framing initial questions and then adjusting smoothly during the rigorous but informal exchange of responses. He guides each "thought leader" without imposing any of his own opinions. The result is that the reader is provided with direct access to how each of the 12 thinks as well as what each has to share about a given issue. Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out the other volumes in the "Strategy & Business" series from Booz-Allen & Hamilton. I also highly recommend Strategy + Business magazine of which Kurtzman served as editor-in-chief.

TAPPING INTO THE THINKING OF TWELVE TOP MINDS.
This work presents interviews with twelve leading thinkers in business and academia on a very wide range of subjects relating to: issues of business strategy, growth and human resources: the new social contract among companies, employees and shareholders; and the way in which society is changing. This is a highly interesting collection of the ideas and insights of some of the brightest people around.
