Secrets of Chess Training

The bright side of chess analysis
I am on the middle scale of chess rating (~1700) so the reader needs to factor this.

Mr. Kotov provides a scientific approach to chess calculations. In reality chess cannot be defined. Science just helps. What makes a better help is actual life lessons.

This is really what this book is about. It does not matter how strong is the material of this book, whaich I am sure is for the very advanced player, but the style of thinking that everyone should be looking for. We are not computers, so pretty suitable for Mr. Kotov's work, but we are human beings that we need to factor many things when it comes to playing chess.

The reader will not regret the time spent in front of this book as the material is very enjoyable to read as well as the sujects presented.

The book presents to the reader an approach in thinking, i.e. analysing, in chess with a support from a great chess trainer and games played by GMs. What else you might ask for?

I hope this review does not look like I am selling this book or the book is like a magic stick that will do mirecles for the reader. The book, above all, needs dedication and determination from the reader to gain the required benefit.

Good luck and happy reading.

A fine work
I am not completely through this work, but it was very informative on the endgame. Some may look for more than that, but we are reminded that "Opengins teach you openings, endgames teach you chess". Dvoretsky has good reason to be considered the best trainer in the world.

Practical Knowledge
This book provides practical tools to increase profits for your organization. Gerald Kendall shares the criterion to prioritize/choose themes for improving customer satisfaction. He suggests that one should focus on those issues for improvement so that the customer is either willing to pay a higher price or ready to give you additional volume, or this would prevent the customer from switching over to a competitor. Improving those customer dissatisfactions, that would not result in one of the above, would not benefit your organization at all. I find many such tips through out this book.

Excellent guide to eliminating market constraints
I am a Jonah's Jonah focused on eliminating market (external) constraints in a variety of industries. I found this book while taking the External Constraint Course at the Goldratt Institute. While the Eli Goldratt book "Its Not Luck" was inspirational and the Institute class was excellent, "Securing the Future" is what I refer to day by day.

A book that changed my presentation life
In retrospect, I realize that this book is the source of so many of the stories and principles that I pass on to others about making presentations. Key concepts, vividly and succinctly explained. I originally saw a video presentation that was a companion to the book, but reviewing the book again now brings those thoughts home again.

For me, some of the most important points are ones that innoculated me against a lot of bad advice that's out there. I'm sorry to see it's out of print. I'm still going to recommend it to the rest of my company.

the best
After 15 years of public speaking, I still think this book is hands down the very best on this topic. It's short, pithy style is perfect (just the like talk you want to give). Paul LeRoux presents the keys to successful presentations in a compelling manner. Anyone who speaks to a group is selling something, if only a point of view.

A 'precious' book
Services Marketing in Asia is extremely well-written and a rare gem. The base text on Service Marketing teaching is great - vintage Lovelock and team you could say - but what stood out for me was the wealth of case studies.

I have been through a couple of similar books in the past. But coming from Singapore, I have found most of the examples and case studies to be American or Euro-centric in nature, and not always readily applicable to the Asian context.

Not to say that non-Asians would not benefit for this book, for I have found the insights in these case studies applicable across culture and industries.

I highly recommend this. This is definitely one book I would keep within an arm's length for ready reference.

Finally, a textbook on Services Marketing in Asia!
This book helps me in understanding the services marketing landscape in Asia. Filled with Asian examples and cases, it's really a gift from the god for the Asian students.

Great book! Revolutionary thinking!
This is one of the best books for MBA courses. It captures most of the best and realistic ideas to keep a company having a real competitve edge through service. With competition heat up everywhere, service is the key to differentiation and this book tells you how to do it.

Learn to think & execute a service business successfully.
"Services Marketing" is written as a series of articles, each of which covers a particular subject in depth. This is not the kind of book which you read from beginning to end, but the articles include interesting material, so you may find yourself dipping into chapters without following any definite plan. The book is strong on marketing theory, and it includes extracts from numerous case studies which illustrate the propositions being discussed. The examples cover a wide range of industries and usually refer to real-life organizations such as Fedex, United Airlines, Citibank, Domino's Pizza....

The reason I first looked at this book, was because I came from a product background and needed to learn new skills that could be directly applied to ACSL's business: which is marketing information services. So it helped me as a newbie in marketing services. However, my co-editor from whom I borrowed this book, was at that time the European marketing manager of a major computer services company, and she found different aspects of the book useful. So we have no hesitation recommending it whatever your job title or previous experience.

"Services Marketing" is helpful whether you're just looking for a sourcebook to give you new ideas to use in your latest promotion, or whether you're looking for a framework to help you reorganize your international business around a marketing services culture.

Monolith's Shogo is one of the best first-person action games of the year. By combining anime-style artwork with a rich, intricate story and exceptionally well-designed levels, Shogo is certain to develop its own hard-core following among gamers. But the game is as challenging as it is impressive, so Sybex has compiled a solid guide for those gamers who need a helping hand. The book starts out with a list of the game's cheat codes--for those of you who just can't wait for such things. After that, you'll get a breakdown of the various mechas in the game, both friendly and otherwise. Every weapon is described in detail, along with each of the game's main characters. The book also includes a complete mission-by-mission walkthrough, which even guides you through the game's plot-branching points so that all of the bases are covered no matter how you decide to play the game. --Michael Ryan

The best!
This is the best book I have seen on the accelerated dragon, including Silman and Donaldson's book, as well as Silman's Winning with the Sicilian Defence (actually, I like all these books). But this one is the best combination of complete games, lots of theory, enthusiasm, and good writing. It is one of those "labor of love" books. Highly recommended--you will be playing the accelerated dragon if you buy this book.

Complete and instructive coverage of the Accelerated Dragon
This book covers all lines of the Accelerated Dragon including the variety of systems played vs. the Maroczy Bind and alternative set-ups. It has the added plus of using research from an earlier book (Silman and Donaldson) on the same subject. While the use of complete games may not appeal to all readers, themes are covered and explained in every line and there are loads of suggestions with improvements in certain lines and reassessments of others. Both authors play the Accelerated and Heine-Nielsen, the 1999 Danish Champion, has a lot of his games on display.

While the book shows a bias for Black in that they try to prove that the opening is playable, they do evaluate the positions objectively and games feature wins and losses for both sides and clearly show critical lines, especially in the end of chapter summaries. In addition, the Hyper Accelerated Dragon with (2 ....g6) and the Semi Accelerated are covered (4 .... Nf6).

I noticed that a line in NCO in the Semi Accelerated was not given and it seemed superior to the line given by this book as a model. However, this is a well written and thorough guide on the Accelerated Dragon and related systems and is recommended if you need only opne book on the opening.

A thorough look at a flexible opening
I enjoy playing small center Sicilian positions like the Scheveningen, but want to avoid the Keres Attack. Unlike Kasparov, however, I am unwilling to devote my life to keeping current on the Najdorf theory that changes by the hour. The Kan (also known as the Paulsen variation) can easily transpose into the Scheveningen in many lines while avoiding the Keres variation. The Kan is strategic in nature and flexible. Many lines have a Hedgehog flavor to them.

If you like strategic opening variations that can be played according to general setups rather than meticulously crafted move orders, the Kan is for you. This book does an exceptional job of explaining the types of positions you are likely to encounter, and how to handle them.

I agree that the lack of an index is unforgivable, but it doesn't take away from the quality of the writing.

Emms strikes again!
What a great book! Emms is cranking out masterful works, and this is perhaps is best yet. It is densely packed with both explanatory text and variations, giving the reader the best of both worlds for opening books. It is mind-boggling to imagine the amount of work that went into this book. The Kan is a great line of the Sicilian, frequently called the "most flexible line" of the Sicilian. I have a couple quibbles that are not really book-specific. Like other Everyman books, it lacks an index at the back. This is a RIDICULOUS oversight by Everyman. They are churning out quality opening books, but none of them have indiexes in the back. THis is a serious handicap if you are looking for moves quickly in on-line games, and generally for research purposes. The end-of-chapter variation indexes are almost completely useless, because you have to spend time finding them too. The point of a comprehensive index at the back is that it is a quick and certain way of finding the line you are seeking. Everyman needs to change this, NOW! Also, my next quibble concerns all books made regarding a black opening: SHOW THE DIAGRAMS WITH BLACK AT THE BOTTOM!! I go through these games with black closest to me on my board (because, after all, I am trying to learn the Sicilian as black), and every time I have to re-set the board to the previous diagram, I have to turn my board around to re-set the pieces. It would be so much easier if the publisher simply put the black side of the board at the bottom of the diagrams. The only book where I have seen this done is Mike Basman's Chess Openings (which is, BTW, a very fine book). Again, a simple oversight by the publisher that would be a bigimprovement if implemented. so, Everyman, SWITCH THE DIAGRAMS IN BOOKS ABOUT BLACK!! Tremendous book!
