The Reichswehr: A very sticky topicDr. Corum also makes a statement in focusing on General Hans Von Seeckt as the driving force behind many of the reforms the Reichswehr undertook during his years as chief of the general staff. By taking the spotlight away from Heinz Guderian, Corum has placed the emphasis on the man who fostered the kind of general staff where sweeping tactical and organizational changes were possible. Professor Corum also makes it very clear that those changes were in large part due to a serious assessment of the lessons of the First World War.
A reader from an allied country may have difficulties in trying to separate the great advances in warfare made during the period of the Reichswehr, and how these principles were misused only a few years later. However, one can not avoid marveling at the professionalism and flexibility of the tradition of the Prussian General Staff, and it is those qualities that Professor Corum has focused on in his text.

An energy & renewal oracleThis book is a solid contribution to my professional and personal life. The visuals are friendly and effective -- the key points, inspirational quotes, road to renewal signs, spaciousness, tailor-made graphics, soulful writing, practicality, and page after loving page of simple wisdom -- all satisfying and nourishing.
I appreciated how this book began, with both authors telling personal stories of learning first-hand about the importance of balance and renewal. Each story was poignant and something that anyone can identify with, I would imagine. It's a friendly, friendly book -- from colors to typeface to spacing to mixing of many inspirational and helpful lines from endless sources & resources. There is so much good work & research supporting what has been assembled and written, which is immediately apparent to the reader, that it had the effect of relaxing me --I knew I was in good hands, and that I was being enriched in ways that I needed.
One final observation that has stayed with me...when I closed the book and went to my car to drive home, and on the way home I noticed a very good, rich, dynamic energy in my solar plexus. It wasn't the caffeine because I'm strictly on decaf now. So, I know it was the stirring from the tone and gentle massaging of the stories, insights, resonance, and spirit of your book. That was a wonderful gift. It surprised me to have had an effect on my energy simply from the reading. I think that happens in the presence of beauty, goodness, and truth, which has been masterfully conveyed and honored.
This book has become an important companion, helping me to care for myself so that I can care more effectively for others.

Brilliant analysis'The key, and the theme of this book, is a very old idea,' Friedman writes. 'About four centuries ago, Francis Bacon wrote that "he that commandeth the sea is at great liberty and may take as much or as little of the war as he will."'
With his customary clarity Friedman describes the relationship between naval powers and land powers, the naval strategies of the world wars and the Cold War, the impact of technology, and current US naval strategy. Like many naval theorists, he relies heavily on discerning lessons from British experience. He applies those lessons to the United States' situation.
No naval enthusiasts will regret reading this book; it will at least clarify their thoughts. Students of geopolitical history are very likely to find it useful, too.
And the Naval Institute Press, as usual, has turned out a handsome volume: you can see your money in the excellent editing, printing and binding. I have no connection with the publisher.
Solid thinking from someone in the know
