Very Nicely Done
This 267 page volume published in 1994 is one of Kosten's finest works. It probably would be best though to get a more general work on the Nimzo-Indian before embarking on this one. The move order (1.d4 Nf6, 2.c4 e6, 3.Nc3 Bb4) is easy to understand and allows Black quick development. Invariably White is either saddled with 2 c pawns after Bxc3 bxc3 or if White chooses an early Qc2, the White Queen captures at c3, but this slows down White's development since he has made 2 Queen moves so early. One word of caution though. White decides on Move 3 if he will allow the Nimzo-Indian to be played by Black, or instead choosing 3.Nf3 which usually leads to the Queen's Indian defence (3.Nf3 b6). You really need both in your opening repertoire as Black if you're not a King's Indian or Grunfeld defence player (2.c4 g6). Of course if you're really ambitious you could try the Blumenfeld Gambit if White offers 3.Nf3 (3...c5, 4.d5 b5!?) but it's hard to find deeply analyzed material on that. Needless to say, the semi-serious to serious chess player needs to know this defence as Black against the Queen's pawn player. I would also suggest a book on the Benoni defence (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5, 3.d5 e6) and the Benko Gambit (3.d5 b5).

Excellent as a game collection
For those of you that play the Nimzo-Indian Defense, this is a great game collection of 189 deeply annotated games. I would recommend first reading "Mastering the Nimzo-Indian With the Read and Play Method", also by Tony Kosten, first, and then when you have a feel for all the various lines and pawn structures, tackle these 189 games.

Not With Our Kids You Don't! Ten Strategies to Save Our Schools

They don't call her the Room Mother for nothing!
It seems as though 'Not With Our Kids You Don't' was written just for me. I laughed out loud and my husband rolled his eyes and nodded in agreement when I read him this home-hitting excerpt ... "When I say I'm a 'full-time activist,' I actually mean I'm obsessed. My family is extremely understanding; my husband hardly ever throws a fit about the cluttered house or the lack of a decent meal." (Pg. 48) I am one of the lucky ones -early on in my foray into activism, I received an email of welcome from Juanita Doyon (a.k.a. the Button Lady; the Room Mother of the Resistance Movement). She's the one that broke the news to me -- "Oh you've got it bad" she wrote with a "giggle, giggle" thrown in for good humor. Now I use Juanita's book as a special gift to break the news to new activists I meet along the resistance trail - on the inside cover I write "Welcome to the obsession." Behind every successful education activist there is a lot of friendship, great advice, and good natured ribbing -- this indispensable book is a great way to spead it around.

A must have for anyone involved with children!
In this delightful, easy to read book, Juanita Doyon tells why she has made it her personal agenda to make sure no child is really left behind. With passion, focus, and humor she gives us lessons on how to become actively involved in education by relating her own experiences as a parent in schools. Doyon's book should be used as a manual for PTA's and PTO's nationwide, both for her cookie recipes and her wisdom.

Skip the small stuff and go for the kill.
I must have spent agonizing hours testing this brick and that, every shadow and every possible doubling back pattern. No stone unturned (usually to turn on me). I died a thousand deaths. This book could have saved the agony of defeat and turned it into the thrill of victory. Unlike the brave man I may not have died at all. More than Strategies & Secrets there are patterns and special keys.

Thank you Jonathan Mendoza for helping us Survive!

fantastic!
Doom simply rules. It is like that. Quake is bigger, harder, and better, but still. Doom...rules.

Herndon's done it again! Most certainly, he's mastered the English language, and he owes it to his humble beginnings on Fish Pond Road. Bravo, my good man, bravo!

Magic: The Gathering Starter Review
This may be a little biased because I totally love Magic: The Gathering. I really thought that this book would help anybody learn how to play the game or help sombody brush up on their technique. Also to some extent have some what of a mastery of the game and therefore leading them on to greater things in life.

Excellent analysis leading to the victory of the Gulf War
Is probably the best analysis of why we succeeded so completely in the Gulf War. It covers the historical and the strategic ,(socio-political), aspects leading to the Gulf War from the American Military standpoint. It is closer to a collection of interrelated essays on the different aspects that lead to success in war, starting from what in essence led to the defeat of America in Vietnam. This is a must for those interested in more than just tactics or for those interested in being (or understanding) a great leader and the elements that make "great" policy.

A Brilliant Historical Perspective
This is not a blow-by-blow account of the Gulf War; indeed, the only actual description of the progress of the war itself is the Appendix, a transcript of General Schwarztkopf's 2/27/91 press briefing.

The bulk of Summers' book is a critical analysis of the historical factors that in large part determined how the war was prosecuted and that determined its outcome. Much of this is a re-examination of why we failed in Vietnam- a subject covered brilliantly in Summers' earlier "On Strategy:"- and the changes in US Military policy that followed. Particular import is placed on how the support of the American people and world leaders was cultivated to support the Gulf War.

For students of history, politics and the military, this is a must read.

Here is serious and comprehensive look into the game of One-Pocket. Amongst those that play this game, it is considered the consumate test of one's offensive, defensive and execution skills. The format of diagrammed game situations, shot choice, and the strategy behind shot choices, is excellent. Battle the undead without becoming one of them!
So, you have all probably heard all the hype over Onimusha Warlords. Critics say this will be ps2 first million seller, so does it deliver? Oh heck yeah! Playing this game to the break of dawn in constant amazement over story and graphics. Finally it all came to an end and victory was mine. Wanting more I purchased the official statagy guide. It brought to light all what I missed and neglected. The guide tells the story of onimusha and the backgrounds of characters. Indepth explanations of baddies and stratagies for over coming seemingly impossible situations. Detailed maps are included showing the location of all the goodies you will need to survive. Hate going back and forth between screens to solve puzzles? With the guide you have the books you need to collect right in front of you. For you more ambitious types the guide contains the extra missions you can play after beating the game. Not only is this book informative it is also beautiful. The pages are over layed with pictures of Japanese woodcuts from their mythology. This is for sure a must have book for a must have game.

Operation Moonlight Sonata

Author: Allan W. Kurki
Amazon base price: $59.00
Used price: $64.95
Average review score:

Interesting
As a Coventry resident, I found this book fascinating, especially with its explanation of the truth behind some of the myths of this raid.

Despite the destruction of this raid, Coventry survived and so did many of its most important medieval buildings. The post-war reconstruction was ambitious and well planned, and has been ruined in recent years by cheap building and poor planning.

Setting the record straight.
(A numerical rating, as above, is mandated by the new Amazon format but explicitly disavowed by this reviewer.)

Author Kurki, in the course of demolishing some widely held but erroneous views of the Coventry Raid, also provides a very interesting survey of the Battle of Britain. He details German Air Force units, weapons and operational plans, British defenses (including electronic), Ultra and other Allied codebreaking capabilities, and brings together a lot of useful information not easily found elsewhere.

Very interesting account, with maps, photos, charts, appendices, bibliography, and index.

The true story of the Battle of Britain
The true story of the Battle of Britain. This book is a good read. It's about the planning of the Battle of Britain on German side, and the planning of the British defense, on the British side. If the Battle of Britain had succeeded, it would have been the first successful cross-Channel invasion since William the Conqueror in 1066. Hitler's half-hearted attempt at an invasion was bungled from the start. He didn't count on Britain being prepared. He was expecting Britain to be like Poland and the Soviet Union with its planes on the ground like sitting ducks. Churchill had once said that French said that Britain would have her neck wrung like a chicken. Then he quipped "some chicken--some neck."

The definitive story of the Battle Britain read this book!
The definitive history of the Battle of Britain read this book! Operation Sea Lion is about the planned German invasion of Britain. It's also about the British countermeasures. Not many people know that the British removed the street signs from London's streets to confuse the Germans if they'd invaded. It also confused the British drivers. There are some editorial cartoons as well. One has a man on the telephone, he's probably a British Cabinet Minister or Sir Hugh "Stuffy" Dowding, and the caption's "Get me Messerschmitt 109." Operation Sea Lion was supposed to be like Operation Overlord--a cross- Channel invasion. The British were prepared and they defeated Goering's vaunted Luftwaffe.
