Setting our mission statement had our company had us knocking heads until we picked up Mr. Abrahams' book. "Mission Statement Book; 301 Corporate Mission Statements from America's Top Companies" is a must for any dot.com company.

This book is a very helpful brain-storming tool. You're making work for yourself if you write a mission statement without consulting it.

As an MBA student, I've read my share of books on corporate strategy. Without a doubt, "Modern Competitive Strategy" is one of the best. I have used it extensively both in my classes and at work. It is concise, well-written and contains all of the common strategic models (i.e. Porter's Five Forces, BCG Growth-Share Matrix, Makadok's Model, Dynamic Growth Cycle, etc), each of which is clearly illustrated through real-world examples. This is a must-have for any MBA student or business professional.

Dr. Walker has provided a easily digestible framework that every manager should have as a full read or reference. I am in the IT field in a hyper competitive industry and have previously read Christensen, Porter, and D'Aveni and find that this a compliment to these previous works. The examples take you from startup phase to maturity and from Ford and the assembly line to Microsoft and their dominance. The models are powerful yet easy to understand. I would recommend this book to practitioners and students.

This book is indispensable. It contains the best advice I have ever read on how to win scholarships. What makes this book so effective is that is has several chapters on how to select a topic and write your own winning essay. Plus, to show you how to put it all together it has 30 examples of essays that won money. This really helps you see how to do it. Besides the essay it also has several chapters on doing the scholarship interview. Rather than just give you a list of questions this book gives you answers to the questions. To top it off there are several chapters with insightful interviews with scholarship judges. This is a great book and I expect that once it is discovered everybody will be reading it.

You can best judge a person by the company he keeps; and in Clyde Wilson's case he has been keeping very good company indeed.

In this book, the editor of the papers of John Calhoun tells the story of one of the defenders of Calhoun's principles, James Johnston Pettigrew. The portrait is of a man who is engaging and noble.

When you visit Gettysburg, stand at the North Carolina monument and gaze across the field at the copse of trees; you will be standing at the spot where Pettigrew and his men began their march to glory. As Wilson's portrait of Pettigrew makes clear, and as any serious and honest student of the struggle for Southern independence should know, these were men who fought for a variety of reasons. In Pettigrew's case, it was to preserve a substantial measure of the world that America had inherited from Europe against a foe bent on destroying that world in the name of an abstract principle.

Present day college students are often overwhelmed with information that they are expected to remember on their own. While this book was primarily written as a "text" book for first year students, it is definately a book that should be in every college students'library. In fact, it may also be a good book for instructors to teach their students good study and note taking habits, as well as preparation for exams that increases memory retention, and decreases test anxiety. In a framework organized by six components related to academic success-- motivation, methods of learning, time management, control of the physical and social environment, and performance, this book covers all aspects of what to expect in the college environment, as well as providing practical strategies that will enhance a student's success in the classroom. A major strength is the follow-up activities and self reflections at the end of each chapter which helps students discover their own strnegths and weaknesses, and to tailor a successful learning program that is appropriate to that individuals' personality. This is not your typical "cookie-cutter" text book that gives the same recipe for success to everyone, but in fact gives ample examples of real experiences from past students of every type, which allow for students to relate to one or two students, and examine what worked for them in a stressful collegiate environment. While most students come from highschool backgrounds that dictate their every move, this book helps students to prepare for the transition to college life, depicting the realistic 'student responsibility' emphasis, and less instructor guidance emphasis. The college environment provides a student with more freedom to do what he/ she wants to do, or doesn't want to do, without constant supervision. This is a very difficult world to live in for first year students who are used to constant adult supervision of homework, and study time. Myron H. Dembo gives students the tools they need to be successful in such a 'self-management' oriented environment, and helps them to discover and implement practical strategies to achieve their goals. If only I had this book when I first started college. I may not have been one of the statistics of graduates who barely made it to graduation day, as opposed to feeling proud of the education I achieved successfully.

This is the only Tax Book Ive ever read that didnt put me to sleep. Easy to read, lots of great tax advice and lots of humor to keep it interesting. If your an investor, I highly recommend this book. It could save you thousands of dollars!

This book is worth reading cover-to-cover to learn what you need to know before filing your taxes, and it's also a handy reference that can be used to answer specific questions (I've used it for both). The examples are humorous and clear, and the book does a good job of anticipating what questions will come to mind as you prepare for your tax filing. If your tax situation is getting complicated because of your investments, this book should really help.

In his book, Daminai captures the essence of Facility Management by providing helpful information on topics such as construction management, contracting, outsourcing and FM Branch organization. A 30-year professional in FM recommeded the book to me. After reading it myself, I cannot recommend it ENOUGH! We are using the book as a supplemental text in our Basic Facility Management course, our continuting education courses and as a supplemental text in our graduate degree class in Facility Management. The book is in-tune with trends in Facility Management, and is versatile enough to use as reference material for all related FM tasks. The book is definitely a keeper! Mark A. If you are at all interested in conservation, then you have to read this book. John Oates shows how the modern concept of community based conservation that looks so good on paper, in reality has been a dismal failure in West Africa. He provieds several examples from his 30 year long career in West Africa. He shows that you have to be realistic when designing conservation programs, and that many people making conservation decisions are more interested in prestige and money than they are in preserving natural ecosystems. It is sad when you read that the World Wildlife Fund conservation planners are not interested to even go see the areas that they are supposed to protect. The intrinsic value of nature is a hard sell, but finally the utilitarian view of nature seems to always lead to exploitation, and increased pressure on the areas that are supposed to be protected. He also very clearly demonstrates that the idea of using zoos for conservation is a bad one. Zoos are probabally the best way to educate the public about conservation, but are very poor ways to protect species, in fact zoos can even do more harm that good. This book really open your eyes, the situation isn't hopeless, but if conservation projects in Africa are going to work, then it has to be done with a realistic approach and the intrinsic value of nature needs to be on the fore front of the effort.

This is a must read for environmentalist, conservationists and everyone who donates money to the cause of saving endangered species. From Oates own experiences in Africa and Asia, Oates tells us how the myth of sustainable development is failing to protect species and parks. He informs us about that what is needed is a return to protecting nature for its own sake. It is a well written book that weaves personal history with the history of the conservation organizations that are telling us they are "saving life on earth." The reality is they are failing and they must change tactics and soon.

This book offers a multitude of effective negotiation strategies for dealing with business people, friends, family, and casual encounters. Using a "win-win" philosophy the authors provide chapters on principles of negotiation, skills that make negotiation work, negotiating obstacles, negotiating with difficult people, and how to assess and gain success in different settings and situations. All the information is presented clearly and comprehensively, with lots of illustations, and there are many practical suggestions and step-by-step solutions about how to handle tough problems. Highly recommended!

One of the best books I've read on negotiating. The authors have an insight into this complicated world and explain just how easy it is to have a successful negotiation so everybody wins. I am in real estate and must negotiate all the time with buyers, sellers and attorneys. This book has certainly made a compelling difference in my approach and I'm more successful. Thanks
