Let's Learn More Kanji
I've bought this book for my wife's boss who is a young American man living in Tokyo for about 5 years. He thought this book was constructed outstandingly logically and felt very comfortable to learn Kanji very quickly. If you have any further recommendation please let me know.

...

Excellent Guide For Continuing Kanji Study
There's a lot of books on starting off learning Kanji but then it gets hard to take the next step without great pain!

This book takes that step.

If you have already mastered around 200 Kanji (maybe Grade1-2) then this book will take you further without assuming you are already a Kanji master.

The title makes the book sound abit more complex than it is. I study with it together with Ken Henshall's (Tuttle pub) "A Guide to Remebering Japanese Characters". The book has space next to the Kanji entry to include notes, in my case I enter a learning mnemnonic.

Not sure what I'll use to go on to the next stage in Kanji study, but this really has been a huge help.

Linguistic Evidence : Language, Power, and Strategy in the Courtroom

What lawyers say isn't always what they communicate
This book presents an excellent sociolinguistic analysis of courtroom speech, and shows how the speech of attorneys and witnesses can communicate much more than the words themselves reveal. One illuminating study looked at "narrative" (longer, story-telling answers) and "fragmented" (short, directly responsive answers) styles of witness testimony and laypeople's reactions to that testimony. When the witness gave longer answers, laypeople perceived that the lawyer had greater trust in that witness. Interestingly, this effect was much stronger for a male witness than for a female witness; O'Barr suggests that the disparity may be due to gender-role stereotypes that expect a male to be more assertive. This is only one example, but the book is full of thought-provoking studies on courtroom language. The book offers especially good insight in analyzing how certain speech habits can demonstrate sincerity, knowledge, power, and trustworthiness.

How courtroom cases may be lost without regard to merit

This is, by any standards, an astonishing little book. It should be required reading for every lawyer and for every person who is concerned to see *justice* done in the courtroom.

Mack O'Barr is an anthropologist. His unusual perspective on the behavior of lawyers and the perceived credibility of witnesses offers startling insight into jury decision making. His book is both fascinating and deeply depressing by turns. His empirical studies show that those citizens most in need of legal redress come to the courtroom two strikes down. His account offers a frightening new dimension to Marc Galanter's "Why the 'Haves' Come Out Ahead" and emphasises the obstacles faced by ther disadvantaged when they seek to invoke the law in their aid.

The book explains why many of the forensic techniques discovered empirically and regularly deployed by lawyers work. I wish I had known of this book when I was a criminal advocate - it would have allowed me to cross-examine witnesses more effectively.

Although the book is a straight forward account of a piece of academic research, it is readable and engaging. The only negative comment I would make is that there is little discussion of the implications of the research findings - perhaps that might be better left to John Conley who has subsequently collaborated closely with O'Barr.

This book deserves to be much better known than it is.

One of the best books I have ever seen
When I purchased this book I thought that it was going to be a standard book. How wrong was I! This book is fantastic! The author did a great job commenting the positions and it is clear that he, himself, assessed the variations and offered a very balanced opinion.

I was very, very surprised with his thoroughness and the fact that the book is not merely a repository for a database. Pedersen crafted this book with care and professionalism!

I, myself have gathered some ideas from it and what is interesting is that these ideas are applicable over the board...

I am happy I bought this book and hope to see a next one on the French by him.

Excellent
This book talks only of the 3-Nc3 lines and there is much stuff. Steffen Pedersen does a great job in explaining the main variations without forgetting to give less played lines. It is another good example of the quality The Gambit Publications are used to give to readers. The materiel is not too complicated for amateur players and is deep enough.
Having contacted the House of Edition myself I can tell that the same author is to write a second book on all the other lines of the French in 2003. I'm eager to see it!

Making Abortion Rare: A Healing Strategy for a Divided Nation

Excellent.
This book focuses in on the unfortunate reality that women seeking abortion are rarely, if ever, given information about the known risks. This means that most women who have chosen abortion did not give their informed consent, since they weren't given all the facts.

His Best Work
Making Abortion Rare goes beyond Aborted Women, Silent No More by providing ideas for disseminating information to women considering abortion and protecting their legal rights to sue for malpractice. Reardon often sites from Hern's Abortion Practices a text for abortion practitioners. He then asks why complications are both ignored by people doing intake at abortion clinics and not given to women as part of their informed consent. If you believe, women should have the right to choose an abortion do you also believe that doctors performing abortion must take the same amount of care other surgeons do?

Excellent Adjunct to Lessons for Adult Learners
I am an adult beginner and found that this book provided an excellent adjunct to my lessons. I read and re-read many sections as it moved me along the difficulties inherent in learning as an adult. When I practiced (just me and my piano without the encouraging presence of my teacher), this book frequently got me over the "I can't learn this" hurdle. Making Music at the Piano helped me examine my goals, analyze my practice problems, and prepared me for a group class that was my first time playing before others. Most of all, I relied on it to provide the voices of other learners talking about their challenges, successes and tips. I continue to refer to this book and highly recommend it.

A Must-Read for Adult Piano Students & Teachers
"Making Music at the Piano: Learning Strategies for Adult Students" is a must-read for any adult who is beginning, resuming, or considering taking piano lessons. It is also important reading for piano teachers. Based on decades of experience as a university piano teacher and performer, Dr. Maris offers numerous tips and insights on the process of learning to play the piano as an adult. The book covers many diverse topics including: characteristics of adult learners, rehearsal strategies, evaluating mistakes, the role of the body in piano playing, and dealing with common pitfalls (e.g., "I sound so awful I don't like to hear myself play"). With warmth and a sense of humor, Dr. Maris convincing makes the case that adult piano students can learn to play sensitively, with musicality, AND have a great deal of fun in the process. Don't miss this book!

Highly Recommended!
Donald A. Marchand, William J. Kettinger and John D. Rollins, professors and consultants on information technology and management, explain how your company can improve its business performance using information orientation (IO). The authors present ways to improve corporate capabilities in information management, information technology and employee use of information. The authors draw from interviews with about 1,000 senior managers from more than 100 companies, representing two dozen countries and two dozen industries. The book uses case histories and examples from these interviews to support its central model, which is based on building, using and measuring these three information capabilities. The authors present innovative answers to the perpetual question of how to quantify subjective measures. The one shortcoming, beyond explanatory repetition, is the problem of sorting out programs with initials instead of names. Yet, we [...] found this book quite solid, albeit academically written, and suggest it to all managers and executives involved with IT initiatives at large companies.

The Missing Link
This is a book that I consider to be one of the most refreshing business texts that I've had the pleasure to read in a long time. It was something of an epiphany for me as concepts I had always instinctively known to exist and to be right were suddenly being detailed and consolidated in a way I have never had the vision to do, and in a way I have never read before.

Time will tell, but the methodology presented here may just provide the hitherto missing link between what we pay for information and what we get from it. Remember that by the end of 2001, the US alone will have spent the lion's share of a trillion dollars on Information Technology, and though we may not like to admit it, much of that money will disappear down a black hole of failed projects and mis-used systems.

If the case studies are anything to go by, the company that has the foresight to apply the principles of "Information Orientation" will not only offer itself the best chance of avoiding the IT gravity well, but will also be putting itself on track to derive the maximum possible value from its expenditure on information systems, in a way that will be measurable in the real business terms of growth, margin and bottom line.

That's a claim I find pretty exciting and I'm looking forward to applying it in my own environment. The authors say it's no fad, and my gut feeling is to agree. I recommend you get a copy of this book before your competitors do!

Great for those who need help!
This book was amazing. I am the most unorganized person around and it has really helped me get a handle on the clutter. Mrs. Salzman has a wonderful way of making it simple. This book has been a wonderful addition to my home.

Martha she's not...and that's a good thing.
Excellent book! Biblically sound without being preachy. Lots of humorous stories and real advice. Cyndy gives advice we can follow, no Martha Stewart answers- just practical solutions for real people. Believable because she's been there & done that! Common sense solutions to everyday problems. I bought this book for all my friends -they kept asking for my copy!

I think this book is good for people on a variety of different levels of management, from salespeople to top executives. The author's use of entertaining analogies helps translate traditional business speak to real life examples of how business works in the real world and adds humor and flavor where it might not be expected. It is great for newly promoted people who are looking for the foundation of how to think ahead and implement a vision through tangible goals and evaluation. Merry Christmas to the seven managers who report to me-- they are getting this!

Packed with mind-expanding ideas
Speaking as a corporate communication professional, I can honestly say this is the most stimulating business book I've read. The premise is that organization leaders must go beyond simply seeking buy-in from their employees to a more iterative, interactive (and, ultimately, much more inspiring and effective) process of continually reinventing the organization. This argument is supported with great examples and enough detail to be actionable.

Highly recommended.
Mary Boone has authored a wonderful resource for implementing a knowledge-sharing culture in the Enterprise. Things to pay special attention to in the book include the ten key competencies for mastering new methods of communication and management, her insightful analysis of trends and obstactles affecting corporate communication, and the way she uses interviews with CEOs and executives to show you how others have implemented effective collaborative strategies.

On the lighter side of things, read her story about "George" in the "Get Over Yourself" chapter. She uses this story to point out how personality differences can be a show stopper to implementing innovation and promoting creativity. Furthermore, she explains how collaborative technologies can help bypass some of these differences.
