From the Opening Into the Endgame

Unique and Instructive
This excellent book by Mednis has only one flaw: it is not long enough! This is really a repertoire book for white, but without covering all openings. He focuses on lines where quick resolution is brought about, so that a complex middlegame is avoided. For instance, against the King's Indian, he recommends an early dxe5, followed by the exchange of queens and Bg5, Nd5, etc. Similarly, Mednis recommends the Spanish Exchange. Other openings covered are: the Sicilian Dragon and Accelerated Dragon, the Pirc, the Modern, Queen's Indian, Grunfeld, English/Reti, and the French. Each chapter contains heavy verbal annotations of the main recommended lines, making this a phenomenal instructive manual on both the opening and the endgame. The illustrative games contain many beautiful and instructive endgames. Mednis really shined as a chess author, and this is, in my opinion, one of his most valuable works.

A good book for newcomers and casual players
This books explains the game of chess from head to toe: as the name states, from opening into the endgame. This book does a good job of engaging the reader into each phase of the game with detailed explanations and most of all, the writer's insight into the game. Anybody should benefit from this book. A must buy.

Practical "how-to": buy in, don't sell out
The strength of this book is in its nuanced case studies, which show the real-life dilemmas of those who may be subject to bias -- minorities, women, the disabled, gay workers, etc. The case studies not only sketch out the situation but include follow-up analyses, labeled "what should "x" have done?", that model how to cope with difficult situations. Suppose you're a woman at an investment bank with a Ph.D in economics and a great record attracting clients, and your boss has you stereotyped as a research beetle? What if you're a secretary with a very popular boss, but his compliments about your dress and appearance make you uncomfortable? Or a Pakistani software engineer whose colleagues joke that you must be sympathetic to terrorists? Or a black sales manager whose subordinates go over your head to complain about your aggressive management style -- and your own boss passes on the complaints without checking into their validity or encouraging the complainers to confront you directly? The book shows how to educate colleagues and bosses in situations like these without alienating them. While some of the advice about corporate "get-ahead" behavior is a little generic, the case studies make the book as a whole practical, practical, practical. Those who feel like "outsiders" in their workplace and are looking for ways to form good relationships and have their skills recognized will find it truly useful.

Strategies Many Probably Need
Here is a brief excerpt from the Introduction: "A special caveat: In the book we describe group tendencies. But, as we all know, not all members of a group share the same beliefs, values, and behaviors. Moreover, this book is not intended to be a definitive study of every group discussed. Instead, it makes use of some distinctive tendencies in each group to demonstrate how these tendencies may affect personal interaction, teamwork, and promotional opportunities in the workplace." As the subtitle correctly suggests, the authors suggest seven strategies for success "when you're not a member of the dominant group in your workplace." That is, when you are outside and determined to get inside. Here are the strategies: 1. Check Your Baggage, 2. Call Out the Cavalry, 3. Accentuate the Positive, 4. Blow Your Horn, 5. Buy In, Don't Sell Out, 6. Know Your Rights, and 7. Have a Vision. Each of these seven strategies is carefully explained and then illustrated. The material is based on real-world experiences, strategies, and tactics recommended by real people. If you are (or feel that you are) excluded from the dominant group in your own workplace, I urge you to obtain a copy of this book and read it with appropriate care. Moreover, I presume to share a few personal caveats of my own. First, not all "in" groups are worthy of joining. Also, those who are "in" today may be "out" tomorrow and then "gone" soon thereafter. Finally, the strengths you now possess (ie what you have inside of yourself) such as intelligence, integrity, and passion are far more important than acceptance by a group whose members may lack them. Shakespeare's Polonius was right: "To thine ownself be true."

Got a preschooler? You need this book!
Hurray! This is a book that is actually funny, helpful and soooo practical. I got this book before we took our 3 1/2 year old on vacation. I had only read a part of the book, but the ideas I took from it (pennies in a cool whip container was priceless,)really helped keep my fussy child happy in the car. Now that I have finished the book, I have used McKee's tips for trips to the supermarket, toy store, the doctor's office and restaurants. This is one you'll go back to again and again. The first Fussbusters book is just as wonderful and is definitely worth buying as well.

Invaluable, essential reading for parents of toddlers
Fussbusters On The Go: Strategies by child psychologist and youth services expert Carol Baicker-McKee is an outstanding compilation of effective strategies and "parent friendly" games to help make errands, outings, vacations, and general travel with preschool children fun and stress-free. One of the best books I've ever read on leadership. It gives practical strategies and wonderfully relevant examples. People who read it in my leadership courses love it and it gives them a new way of exploring leadership that is also fun.

The Best I have Read
This is an unknown, but excellent book on business strategy. It is easy and interesting reading while providing an easy business strategy approach. I have a framed print of "Sitting Bull" over my desk to remind me "THINK STRATEGY"

Great coach, book! Boosts your EQ+IQ.
I got this book to streamline my emotions, find the motivation, assume a positive spirit in my search for a new job. Helped much.

EQ. Emotional Quotient. The author is definitely a Ph.D. in Psychology. He is good. He makes it all sound natural, reasonable, approachable, doable. Provides motivation in simple human terms. Discusses fear, hopes, competition, courage, determination, anxiety, self-steem.

IQ. Intellectual Quotient. The book expands the scope and effectiveness of your analytic capacity applied to the job-search process. The book gives you a simple working methodology to visualize and analyze what is fundamental to find a job.

Whatever you do, before you start selling you to employers, do sell yourself the idea of buying a job, of finding a good job that you will enjoy at a company that will truly help you grow.

After reading this book I felt like finding a million jobs. LOL.

Working proof of 'Get Hired'
I am a recent college grad who came across this book at the public library. I had spent the past four months unemployed so I decided to read this book to resuscitate my career-hunt. This book was a tremendous help. Dr. Green writes in a practical manner which is enjoyable to read. His strategies and advice are clearly applicable to an entire interview, including what to do after. I really enjoyed 'Get Hired' because of its effectiveness. Most interview books focus on the questions, but rather than chase after questions this book focuses on the source, the interviewer. By understanding the interviewer, we can understand what questions they are likely to ask, what they are looking for, and then how to answer the question. This strategy is very flexible in adapting to an interviewer, rather than solidifying in answering specific questions. Also, 'Get Hired' has a pratical, in-depth process for readers to write out our job and life experiences. I found this process so easy and enjoyable that by the time I finished I had a lot of well, developed experiences, some of which I had almost forgotten. With this multitude of clear, developed experiences it enables readers to answer any question while highlighting a benefit to the employer. Another, strategy of 'Get Hired' I really like is how readers are shown how to guide the interview and questions. This book teaches how to take questions and to direct them where we want them, which is towards our proven experiences. Also, it shows how to answer a question which will then lead to another desirable question. This strategy was so effective when I interviewed that I knew which question would be asked next by how I guided it. In fact, by studying this book and practicing it I did great on my next interview where I had five interviewers, two of them were participating through a phone conference. With each question I followed the strategies from 'Get Hired' and answered with a proven experience, while guiding the next question. The entire interview was right where I wanted it to be and through my answers I was able to keep it there. After the interview, my potential supervisor came up to me, shook my hand, and said, "If it was up to me, I'd hire you right now". I got hired to my current position. I am the youngest employee ever hired at this organization and I beat out over forty applicants, many of whom had more years of experience and education. But through my relevant experiences which were enhanced through 'Get Hired' I was proven the best candidate.

Really works!
This book tells you how to get job interviews even when you have been turned down by a personnel department. While being good at what you do is important, in today's job market it is not enough. You have to know how to promote and sell yourself. You can't be hired unless you're interviewed and you won't be interviewed unless you convince the potential employer you're worth meeting, and you can't do that unless you know how to effectively market yourself. And that's what this book shows you in great detail, complete with examples, exercises, tests, and strategies galore. It helped me get my foot in the door.

Excellent Advice!
"What would you like to have accomplished in your lifetime?" is the question posed by the author on page 8 of this wonderfully insightful book. He uses the rest of the book to answer the question. On page 10 he offers a summary that really places the whole issue in context. "The life we desire deep in our being is the one we were created to have, consistent with the way God made us. That's where we'll find the kind of significance we're after."
As the discussion progresses, he talks more about one will encounter along the way. For example, on complexity, he observes "Only at the edge of chaos can complex systems flourish."
Three common elements found in any book of this nature are included; perseverance, desire, and hard work. They are necessary for the fulfilled life.
Passion is another common theme. When a person works with passion, it makes a positive difference on those touched by the work.
On self-examination, he encourages readers to discover the passion burning within them. What is it that you are uniquely qualified to offer by the way you were made with your talents, gifts, abilities, and insights?
One's giftings identifies them at their core.
He has a particularly strong section on dreams. "All your dreams and longings are vital, even the illogical ones--maybe especially the illogical ones--because your dreams are trying to reveal to you very important pieces of who you are" (p. 106).
He talks about how breakthrough discoveries start with "crazy dreamers." Dreamers are encouraged to find like minded people with whom to share their visions and goals.
Plans are the vehicles by which dreams become real.
Small steps lead to the destiny of dreams being fulfilled. Annual goals are advocated.
This book is full of spiritual advice which is practical. For Charlies Hedges, all spiritual advice is practical.

Hit me right where I am at in my life.
In going through an assessment of my current status in life I found this book very helpful. It is written for easy reading to help in discovering greater meaning in your life without a lot of strain. The author wants you to realize your full potential and change from doing the right things to getting the right things right. Not confusing just right.

I have read this book and find it to be one of the most comprehensive books on the subject. It develops the subject very gradually and provides solid material for understanding e-business for small companies. It provides nice and useful examples and case studies that help the reader to understand the nuts and bolts of e-business for small companies in the global market. I recommend it as the first reading on the subject to readers interested in IT and international business for small companies.

Enthusiastic Endorsement of Eduardo Da Costa and Why
Mr. Da Costa's book is an intelligent, realistic and motivating resource for global small business owners and entrepreneurs -- as well as software vendors, industry analysts, and development agencies following small business development. This realtively small volume is stuffed with cogent and straight-forward discussions of the cultural factors and business climate that effect ecommerce success for small business ecommerce operations. He makes the inspiring argument that such developments change lives, as well as significantly affect the health of nations and economies.

More than theoretical, the book is replete with well-drawn examples and lessons - written in a thoroughly unstuffy manner. This Book is as big as Godzilla!
This book rocks and so does the game but I sure wish Space Godzilla and Biolantte were in the game but It does'nt matter!

Where's Space Godzilla, Biollante?
Don't get me wrong, the book is very useful and a good companion to an already great game, but where are the great monsters. I hope when Atari makes the sequel they add a few more monsters to the lineup, SpaceGodzilla and Biollante are my top choices. Other than that the book and the game get a solid 5 stars.
