Fascinating!!!
Really neat info on how insects keep warm/cool down and why they move in those ways - shivering, bouncing, etc. The text is really easy to read and interesting to get into - the drawings sprinkled in throughout help make understanding that much easier. I don't have a science background - just have an insatiable hunger to learn about our natural world and this book definitely filled one corner of that hunger......Ever see a dragonfly stand up like its doing a headstand? Well its not because it like the head rush (or maybe that too but the book doesn't talk to that) - the reason they do that is on p. 66 - "When the sun is directly overhead some dragonflies assume the 'oblisk' position, which minimizes surface area exposed to solar heating while maximizing the area available for convective cooling." ....all to say, it was a hot day and the dragonfly needed to cool down :) Excellent book!

Unusual topic well presented
The thermodynamics of insects, from flight and thermoregulation to "thermal wars" between predator and prey. This is fascinating hard science presented in a user-friendly format. Short and pithy.

Excellent information, easy to understand
Bernd Heinrich has brought us yet another book that appeals both to the complete layperson and the scientist and provides enough detail and entertainment to keep both happy. The Thermal Warriors provides a fascinating look into the details of insect thermodynamics. Did you know that bees and most other flying insects have to shiver their muscles to warm-up their engines before flying because their flight muscles are adapted to work best at flight temperatures? Did you know that some butterflies have to stop and rest frequently on even moderately sunny days to keep from overheating?

Heinrich has taken his in-depth experience in this field and created a summary version for those that want to know more, but don't have any interest in wading through a 600 page monolith. The book is split up into different "problems" that insects must overcome to achieve flight, be active in different environments, and utilize different body shapes and sizes. He explains the physics of the various problems encountered and adaptations to overcome the problems in an easy to read manner. He frequently uses car engine analogies to help things make more sense.

My only qualm with this book is that it was over too soon!

the best cause its the only one!
no really its got great walk throughs for the gold levels but i wouldnt use this guide on the regular levels of TR II.

Tomb Raider II Gold: Prima's Official Strategy Guide
If you are playing Tomb Raider, you almost *have* to use a guide...this one is very good. It's not perfect--there are a couple of places where the recommended action doesn't work (you just have to experiment). Also there are some pick-ups that they forgot to mention, but those were relatively easy to find. This guide is exactly the same as Tomb Raider II: Prima's Official Stategy Guide, but with the addition of the gold levels (of course). Eventhough each walk-through comment includes a color screen shot, sometimes it's hard to recognize exactly where it is--it may depend on exactly how you're facing. I didn't find that to be a major problem. I liked the extra tips and comments outside of the actual walk-through. There are no comments in the book about the training level (Lara's home). That "level" has a couple of spots that could have used a comment or two. Despite the minor shortcomings, if you have Tomb Raider II Gold, you'd be hard pressed to find a better guide.

Good Walkthru
This book will help you through the rough spots of the game, if you ever get stuck. It is not to be used to finish the game without playing it through at least once. If you did, it would not be any fun.

A Mega-Blast of Positive inspiration
I bought this on impulse from Waldenbooks -- was pleasantly surprised. Bender has written one of THE best books I've ever read on sports motivation and psychologfy, tieing together The Martial Way and the way of preparedness for sports as a way of life. Very practical, very inspiring -- no shortcuts. This guiy is The Real Deal. I would write more but the book psyched me up so much I've got to go work out....

Highly Entertaining and Informative
Train Tough the Army Way, I found the Authors sports strategy concepts an excellent standard for winning. As a career athletic director in Southern California, I purch;ased copies for my coaciting staff with confidence that "Train Tough" will solidify our athletes way of doing business. Bender's military and sporting accounts blend well together for highly entertaining and informative reading. Outstanding Job!

Great motivation for any athlete or would-be athlete!
I spend a lot of time training in the martial arts, and am always on the lookout for information (books, articles, advice) that will help me get the most out of every workout. Sometimes it's hard to keep the right mental attitude and keep your training moving in the right direction. In Train Tough, author Mark Bender definitely kicks your butt into gear and gets you motivated to challenge yourself, overcome counterproductive attitudes, and truly see what you can do in your athletic pursuits. He trained 10,000+ soldiers for Operation Desert Storm--so I think he's amply qualified to get the rest of us off the couch and out of our less-than-effective training ruts. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be a better athlete, no matter what level they are at, or which sport they do. BUY IT!

Best resource I ever purchased
I bought this book not knowing what to expect. I just wanted something, anything to read to help my autistic child. This book is packed with stratagies, keys, cautions and important information. It has a table of contents and you can read what you need. It has a special problem area in which it speaks about eating habits, smearing poo, and various other situations that we may encounter. I use this book daily. I bring it to IEP meetings and just recently after reading about sensory integration and calling the OT and requesting information about products to help with sensory integration, she sent me a packet of information, a few products to try at home to see if they help before I go and spend money on things and a thank you note that said "thanks for all you do". I had never been thanked by a teacher. This book helped me realize that my childs autism will not go away and that there are things that can help him and that I have the power to help him. It also helped open up communication and resources from the school as well and has gotten me respect as well. I am thankful to this book and will keep it on my desk. It is the only book I keep out about autism. Because it is the most useful.
It is well worth the money!

Great stuff for the "practicalities" of living with autism
This book provides great hands-on tips for dealing with autism. The case studies and examples make confusing or unusual approaches much clearer and easier to try at home or explain to others (doctors, teachers, etc.). Reading cover to cover is unnecessary, all chapters can be read independently. The authors give clear, knowledgeable solutions for dealing with such problem behaviors as escaping, biting, and "stimming", along with lots of information on using various intervention techniques. A must-have for teachers and parents!

A "to the point" resource for professionals and families.
This book is a "must have" resource for anyone who works with children with Autism. The Authors have clearly synthesized current best practices in the field and given the reader many case study examples.

just what the doctor ordered
This book is just what the doctor ordered for me. I perused many books on business planning as I felt a good book would help me take my business to the next level. All I saw was garbage, until I bumped into this book. It is not longwinded, but is right on target if you want a no nonsense business planning book. It's worth a lot more than it's sticker price, to say the least.

Fantastic, pragmatic easy to read on a business trip
Clear concise task list of what to do. Each section has a 7 point summery. Would be nice it the book came with a word template to get you started(so had to write one). Each of the 21 topics are very concentrated, almost pointers to other books one of which are points elaborated in "Steve Covey's 7 Habits" book the other related must read is the "Yes or No guide to better decisions by Spencer Johnson" ISBN 0-00-104661-6

If you are doing a business trip, dont leave the airport without it, and take a pencile to make margin notes.

Like a mini-MBA
Another winner from Brian Tracy. Each chapter looks at a different aspect of running a business (see the table of contents and you'll understand what I mean), giving solid advice and intelligent answers. A good read for any entrepreneur, or in fact anyone involved in enhancing the success of a business.

Vehicle Mileage & Maintenance Record Book
This is the best Mileage book I have ever seen. It kept me organized and my taxes were a breeze.

Definitely The Goods
I've used this book for three years now. Its intuitive, complete, and makes being on the road a lot simpler

Easily Worth the Money
I have found this book to be very useful for keeping track of vehicle mileage and related expenses. I highly recommended this for anyone who needs to keep this information for tax purposes. It has a durable, thick vinyl cover that has really held up in my car. The forms are well designed and have plenty of room for writing. My favorite features are the built in envelope for holding receipts and the spiral binding which allows me to lay it out flat.

War Plan Orange: The U.S. Strategy to Defeat Japan, 1897-1945

Who said we weren't prepared!
Edward Miller's "War Plan Orange" is a well researched and effectively written book on the United states Navy's plan of action against a naval threat from the Empire of Japan. He covers the plan from it's initial design, through it's many changes, and through the point where it was "taken off the self" and executed.
While the sneak attack by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor might have destroyed a large portion of the physical fleet. One thing they could not touch was this plan and through it's use as the foundation for the US response, the defeat of Japan was assured. Let's hope that we still make plans that prove this effective.

Excellent analysis of military and geopolitical factors.
Author Edward Stanley Miller has expertly distilled the political and military conditions of each era of war planning for the Pacific Theater. Using a plethora of original references to illustrate contemporary reasons for each era of stratagy, Mr. Miller has done a yeoman's job. The text is logical (a difficult task to identify all of the ebbs and flows of the various planning bodies of the time)and informative. The supporting tables, charts and maps are helpful but could have been expanded. Additional maps of Midway, Corregidor and various other key locations would have enhanced the text. Considering the main thrust of this scholarly work however , any lack of illustrative aids is not a major handicap. This book serves as a benchmark for U.S. military and geopolitical stratagy in the greater Pacific area for the first half of the twentieth century.

A revelatory vindication of interwar military plans.
Too often these days both fictional and "factual" scholarly and media representations of military personnel falls into two categories: buffoons or renegades. Edward S. Miller explodes the myth that the interwar military planners were a bunch of buffoons and the actual combatants who won the war against Japan a bunch of brilliant innovators. War Plan Orange reveals the careful, thoughtful debate and study that went into Pacific War Planning for 48 years. In the final analysis, about the only mistake the interwar planners actually made was to underestimate time and resources required (something that happens with every campaign). As to basic strategy, their work was sound. The campaigners of WW2--some of whom helped with interwar planning--did nothing innovative, they simply executed a good plan proven through much wargaming and study.

What to Charge: Pricing Strategies for Freelancers and Consultants
Published in Paperback by Aletheia Pubns (01 January, 2000)
Author: Laurie Lewis
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

What to Charge -- the most practical book you'll read
The blurb on the back of the book is right! What to Charge is one of the most practical books you'll ever read. It provides a wealth of concrete information for freelancers and consultants on how to negotiate a fair price for themselves -- and for their clients. Based on the information in the book, I accepted my first freelance writing job on a per word instead of per hour payment basis -- and ended up making three times an hour what I would have! I did not have to negotiate these rates, I simply chose the more profitable of two options offered me by the company based on information from the book about how to estimate the price of a job. It's essential reading for new and experienced freelancers.

Price It Right
"Am I asking enough for this job?" "Will I lose the job if I ask for more?" "How often can I raise my rates?" If these and other pricing questions have ever bedeviled you, What to Charge will remove some of the guess work for you. Clearly, concisely, and with many examples, Laurie Lewis discusses how to develop a successful pricing strategy, analyze pricing decisions, negotiate rates with clients, and avoid pricing pitfalls. With suggestions that are simple, practical, and easy to follow, this book gives sound advice for overcoming the "How much should I charge?" dilemma and is a "must" for would-be consultants and experienced freelancers alike.

Answers THE question freelancers struggle with ...
Deciding what to charge is a basic issue freelancers struggle with constantly. As a soon-to-be freelance editor and proofreader, I found this book immensely useful AND inspiring. On a practical level, it offers a truly rational approach to setting consulting fees--no matter what field you're in. Second, and most importantly, it teaches you not to undervalue yourself and, consequently, your services.Any freelance consultant, even the most experienced, will find much of value in this book!

What to Do When Your Child Has Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Strategies and Solutions

This is a "must have" for every parent of a child with OCD
This is the book I wish I had during the months we waited for our appointment with the specialist. Dr. Wagner leaves no stone unturned. In plain language she speaks to the many and complex concerns parents of children with OCD have -- always with this goal: to help minimize the impact of OCD on the child and family. The personal stories woven throughout the book help put a "face" on OCD that every family living with it will understand. I particularly appreciated Dr. Wagner's respectful and empathetic treatment of parents, also victims of this disorder, in the chapters "Parenting Challenges" and "Taking Care of Yourself." This is an empowering book; one that continues to offer hope and help to parents beginning with that first suspicion that something's "not quite right." I continue to use it as a valuable resource.

Understandable, practical guidance.
"What to Do When Your Child has Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder" is an exhaustive, authoritative and yet highly readable examination of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in children. It is organized into two parts with the first part a thorough education in OCD. It examines what OCD is and what it is not, how it is diagnosed, causes of OCD, and various treatments. The second part provides just as thorough an education in how OCD affects your child's thoughts and behaviors. It examines the cycle of avoidance and how that cycle fuels OCD. Parenting challenges related to OCD are also discussed in detail. The text also includes an exhaustive examination of behavior therapy and how it is used to help the OCD child acquire the skills to overcome their disorder.

This is easily one of the most approachable and thorough books I have ever read on OCD. Don't forget the companion book "Up and Down the Worry Hill" that is specifically written for children with OCD to help them understand the disorder and what will happen in behavior therapy. "What to Do When Your Child has Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder" is a highly recommended read for anyone wanting to understand OCD better.

This is REQUIRED reading for all who know someone with OCD
This book is a must-have for parents AND clinicians alike. Dr. Wagner uses straightforward language to demystify both OCD in children and the ways cognitive-behavioral therapy works in treating this agonizing illness. She first helps to distinguish between rituals or obsessions that are developmentally normal vs. those that are disordered. Then she provides detailed, knowledgeable information on how to seek help, the types of therapies and medications that work, and what parents can do to assist their child in the recovery process. Most importantly, she gives an amazingly clear explanation of how the exposure and ritual prevention exercises of CBT work to dispel the rituals and reduce anxiety. And she provides compelling, and heartbreaking examples of the treatment in actual clients she has worked with. This book is clearly written by an expert clinician who exudes compassion, empathy and full understanding of the impact of OCD on the afflicted and their families. As a practicing psychologist, I routinely recommend this book (and the companion one for children, "Up and Down the Worry Hill") to all my clients -- including adult clients -- who are suffering from OCD and anxiety.
