Protect Your Estate - by Esperti, et al
I bought the previous edition of this book several years ago and learned so much from its straight forward, well-organized and clear presentation (I am neither an accountant nor a tax person) that co-workers and family members began quizzing me on matters of estate planning. This book allowed me to answer many questions and also enabled me to have a very intelligent conversation with a professional estate planner. I consider the book such a valuable resource that I just purchased the updated edition.

Good Stuff!
I am an estate planning attorney, not affiliated with any of the author's companies, and I think this book is a "must read" for anyone who is serious about planning his/her estate.

By the way, estate planning is for everone, not merely the "wealthy." The cost (in time and fees) to have a customed designed and implemented estate plan will probably be the best investment you will ever make to protect and preserve your wealth for your loved ones.

Detailed overview in layman's terms
Outstanding book to educate yourself on estate planning. This book will prepare you for the planning process so you can understand what your estate planning attorney is talking about and what he or she is trying to accomplish for you. It also very clearly outlines the fallacies inherent in trying to conduct estate planning without competent legal counsel. The authors tell you know how to find competent advice and how to arrange conduct free consultation interviews with any prospective estate planning specialists. If you are even thinking about estate planning, GET THIS BOOK!

I am the man from Silicon Valley with the review below.
Just a cross-reference, so that more people will be exposed to this great book.
-----------------------------------------------------
Original review:

OK. If I had to pick one chess reference book, it would be an opening encyclopedia (probably Nunn's) but this is the best in a different way. It's a book to refer to while you're trying to learn openings.

Many authors have suggested that the way to study an opening is first to walk through the main lines, then to play out some sample games to understand the themes and goals, then to learn the traps, and finally (if ever) to study the variations.

This book is the best reference for traps. In fact, it is the only satisfactory one, and for its uniqueness it deserves the MVB award.

There are a few other useful books of traps (Chernev's especially) but this one has advantages that set it apart:

* Volume -- Over 2000 short games are included, not one over 13 moves. These are tournament games, mostly from this century, so the mistakes made are not the sorts of blunders you will find in Internet blitz chess, but rather subtle errors that you could easily make yourself. (Burgess mentions an interesting exception, noting that the old penalty for an illegal move was a king move, which forced horrible positions and often resignation.)

* Breadth -- All reasonable openings are covered, including a few games for some dubious flank openings.

* Ease of use -- The table of contents lists openings by name. The index is by move order. (There is no index of games or players, but who cares?) If you're studying a given opening, you go to that chapter. If you're studying a particular variation, you find the page in the index. For each variation, there is at least one complete game plus branches for other games within it.

* Reliability -- Burgess went to great lengths, according to his introduction, to ensure that moves which receive question marks are truly mistakes and suggested alternatives are reasonable.

* Insight -- The notes are excellent. Each chapter has a brief summary of the odds of an opening's difficulty. Transposing move-orders are usually mentioned. Some games have little anecdotes or historical connections. Whenever a game is resigned for less-than-obvious reasons (as most of these are) Burgess explains the mate threat or material loss to us patzers succinctly and precisely.

This is really a book of how NOT to play openings. It will complement any repertoire books and opening encyclopediae. I highly recommend it for your shelf, even to intermediate players (like me). You might find it entertaining. You will find it useful.

...What he said!
I don't want to plagiarize, so I'll just say the review below from "Reader in Silicon Valley" is spot-on. I agree with every word of why he recommends this book. The breadth is remarkable, the number of games and depth of analysis are both superb, and the book is well-laid out, with lots of clear, helpful diagrams. The author's own advice of how to use it is best: find the openings you most like to play and play over the games that use these openings (which are easy to locate in the book). Then play some games just for fun. As others have stated, these aren't blitz or coffeehouse or street games, they're all from tournaments played under tournament conditions (or what were cloeset to tournament conditions in 1650...a few of the games are old, but well worth replaying). This is the sort of book that makes one wonder "Why didn't someone do this before?" (The answer, of course, is that modern computer data bases make this concept more feasible than it would have been ten years ago. This book was clearly compiled from computer data bases, and the trees and many game comments came directly from not human analysis, but computer analysis, probably using some Chessbase product. No matter, the end results are superb.)

Buy this book!

ALL AROUND GREAT BOOK ON THE SUBJECT
Very few books are written about these brave soldiers. This book not only gives a good history of the Rangers it has some excellent in country photos as well.

A Lurp
Ron Field's book provides an excellent overview of LRRP/LRP/Ranger doctrines and missions in Vietnam. The narratives have been provided by those who participated in the actual missions and includes most of the LRRP/LRP/Ranger units which fought in Vietnam. Through the verbiage, extensive photos and excellent artists renditions, and even sections on equipment and uniforms, the reader gets a lot a information in a single book. A couple of our team's missions were included and the author faithfully depicted them as they occurred. An excellent contribution to the growing literature on special ops in Vietnam.
-Dave Hill, formerly of Co.F/52nd Inf(LRP), 1st Inf. Div.

LRRP/Rangers of the Vietnam War
This is an illustrative book well written and true to fact. The information was obtained from those LRRP Rangers who were inserted in the midst of enemy units as 5 and 6 man Special Operation teams. This book is about the men who volunteered to get a piece of the action...and they found it. I know, I was unit one of them.

RELENTLESS GROWTH : HOW SILICON VALLEY INNOVATION STRATEGIES CAN WORK IN YOUR BUSINESS

Irresistible Concept Explained Well
Developing successful new products and services is one of the most difficult tasks that a company has. Unless your products and services have very long life cycles (something that occurs less and less these days), your growth will depend a lot on how well you perform. The book's premise is that starting with the processes that work for the rapid growth, short life cycle companies in Silicon Valley, you can gather important insights. That's a sound and intriguing idea, and it is well executed by Christopher Meyer. One of the things I liked was that he looked beyond Silicon Valley to find how other companies of all sizes and types were employing the same principles. One of my favorite examples in the book was of Emerson Electric.

Here are the book's chapter titles: (1) Knowledge -- The Motherlode of Value (2) The Loose-Tight World of Innovation (3) Leading . . . with an attitude (4) Strategy in a $20 Billion Startup (5) Relentless Approach to Innovation (6) Collective Power of Pairs (7) Measuring Your Measurement System (8) Getting from Here to There

The key point of the book is that each company needs to create an attitude among its people which fosters growth. Meyer does a good job of comparing and contrasting what what makes innovation work from what makes running existing operations excell. Unless you create this attitude, the normal operating needs will push out the needs of innovation.

Building on Intel's Andy Grove's advice about paranoia, Meyer proposes having positive paranoia in regard to the need or positive momentum and change. He also encourages companies to look outward solely, rather than inward. He wants a flatter organizational structure that blurs the organizational boundaries among functions. He favors promoting people who have a passion for innovation and what your company does. He suggests stretch goals that are acted upon, with the whole process repeated.

I found the thoughts in the book to be accurately portrayed and very appropriate advice. A number of the examples were also new to me, which made the book more interesting. A good adjunct to this book is Mike Pessemier's original research from the 1970s on how the best companies develop new products. The case studies in this book draw on important lessons from that research.

Don't sit on your laurels. Develop your innovation attitude by applying the lessons of this book as a first step! That's the kind of leadership that can make a difference!

Sustaining rapid growth is harder than starting out well.
As with his first book, Meyer artfully combines theory and practice in how to deal with success. This book applies well to any business aiming for high (35%+ per annum) growth and the tremendous strain this places on having a shared understanding of the company's goals, direction, and values.

Meyer presents many attributes of successful, aggressive information-age companies and provides stimulating ideas about where and how to steer an organization's culture. Maintaining a sense of urgency and challenging things that brought about current success are hard to do, but this book sheds some light on how to avoid complacency.

I find the book a tad chauvinistic about Silicon Valley, but the area certainly has an enviable track record. I do think his ideas will work elsewhere. :)

Unveils the business secrets of Silicon Valley's champions
Drawing from the experiences of Silicon Valley's "best and brighest," Meyer shows how innovation can be learned and managed. He introduces a model that synthesizes the core elements of innovation and he explores the organizational nature and leadership characteristics of successful high technology firms. Meyer succeeds in conveying the intangible dynamics of these exceptional enterprises. The book is rich in insights that apply to organizations who are striving for a competitive edge. Meyer shows how knowledge, creativity and passion are pivotal to creating weath and shaping the future.

Rules for Parents: Simple Strategies That Help Little Kids Thrive--And You Survive

When Nan Silver (coauthor of The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work) whipped herself into a prenatal panic (which goes something like, "What was I thinking? How can I possibly take care of this baby?), she ditched her stack of baby-care books and called her mother. Mom's reassuring words provided the backbone--and rule number 1--for this hilarious but highly practical guide to commonsense parenting: "You Don't Have to Be Perfect." Readers will find compassion and candor in Silver's nine engaging chapters, which offer practical, savvy advice on discipline, siblings, age-appropriate communication, and upholding the parental "couple." Her premise is simple: neither a tyrant nor a doormat be. Drawing from her professional life as a journalist and her personal life as a mother, Silver compiles a sensible list of "rules" that blend both old and new parenting techniques. Twenty-five ground rules comprise the first quarter of Rules for Parents; in them, Silver takes a firm stand on topics that range from being your child's friend (don't) to being his or her squeaky wheel (do); from force-feeding (don't) to teaching your child to make choices (do). Each rule is allotted two to three pages and is either humorous--such as "When It Comes to Tantrums Never Give In (and then when you do, find a good loophole)"--or very serious ("Have Zero Tolerance for Violence"). Regardless of subject, Silver maintains a witty, conversational tone that makes for a quick and memorable read. This Mommy could do a mean stand-up routine. --Liane Thomas

Simply... great..
Probably the best book ever written for new parents. You won't get tired reading it because of the way it's presented. It's simply a good book to read.

Great for Parenting Group
I belong to a group of mothers who get together once a week to share parenting tips and experiences, and read aloud what some of the "experts" have to say. We've been experimenting with different books and styles, but this one was an instant winner! The author manages to say in a few words what other authors do in whole pages and chapters. It is never boring, and was a real sparkplug for conversations and feedback with other mothers. If you belong to any type of parenting support group, I highly reccommend using this book as a read-aloud text.

so many golden nuggets
My wife and I acquired about 18 inches of books on child care when we had our first child three years ago, and I'm ready to stick them in the basement and free up some shelf space after reading this one. So much wisdom in a one inch binding! This is one of the best combinations of "predigested" expert advice from a variety of sources and author's personal perspective that I've seen in my (slightly obsessive) attempt to outwit the pitfalls of parenthood. As I moved through the book, I was able to get an affirmation of some of the practices my wife and I have followed with our firstborn, as well as some great hints for refining, improving or avoiding others. The style of the book is very conducive to your testing your own experience against the book's viewpoint ("rules" is a bit strong---this is not a dogmatic work by any stretch). Silver has a nice way of educating you without making you feel stupid, and the book moves at a nice clip. (It's also easy to pick up and put down between bottles, diaper changes and the like, since each "rule" is rarely longer than a few pages.) For that reason, this may be an even better book for those who don't read a lot of this type of subject matter than for bookworms like me.

Great resource for new candidates
Faucheux's book is a great resource for new candidates. I gave two copies to friends who are running for local offices and they loved it. It covers all the essentials of running for public office and is a bargain at this price.

Very practical, great for new candidates
Faucheux does a great job laying out the fine points of campaign strategy, message making, fundraising and campaign tactics from the standpoint of candidates. I gave the book to two novice candidates running for local office and they both loved it. Includes plenty of tips about little things you need to know if you want to run.

Wonderful! Contains $50,000 worth of advice for candidates!
This book is great. It covers everything a political candidate needs to know about putting together a campaign. It was written by a real pro who knows elections from every angle. Ron Faucheux did a great service to people who want to run for office with this book.

Highly detailed material
This is an amazing book about the history, design, strategies and current state of the Russian nuclear forces. There was not a single detail I didn't found in this fascinating material. The chapter about the process for veryfing an incoming attack and launching a response is really good.

Very technical, but a treasure trove of accurate information
This is not an easy-reading book, but if you desire to know the smaller details of the history, development, design, construction, and strategy of the Soviet and current Russian strategic forces, without conjecture and without fluff, this is your book. If you can or wish to coherently discourse on the design differences between the Soviet R-36 and R-36M2 second stage and other such details, this one's for you. Highly recommended.

Comprehensive and Absolutely Authoritative
Today, Russia's nuclear forces remain the single greatest danger to the security and survival of the United States. However, because of ten years of Russian economic difficulties, too many in Government and the Western public pay far too little attention.

This book represents the best understanding of Russia's strategic forces available outside the Russian military. You can be sure that the people who really want to understand Russia's nuclear complex and their strategic rocket forces have a copy of this book. This is particularly remarkable since the contributors, all Russians, to this comprehensive overview have based their solid analysis solely on publicly available information--publicly available but dispersed over a wide variety of sources--and then used their scientific understanding to present in a thoughtful, authoritative, and most of all useful account.

Open the book to almost any page and you will find useful and important information. For instance, chapter eight presents a table of Russian nuclear tests, including the test's primary goal. This is the only such compellation I have seen and far exceeds similar lists for the United States. Right away you can see that the Soviet Union used significantly fewer tests on making sure their nuclear weapons would not explode accidentally than did the United States. Does that mean their weapons represent a significantly greater risk of accidental nuclear detonation? An interesting question to ponder.

The story behind the book would, perhaps, make even more thrilling reading. While based on information that the Russian government itself made public, recent years have seen an unjustified persecution of the book's authors by the Russian Federal Security Bureau, the successor to the KGB. In fact, one of the contributors is in under arrest (for other work he did) and all the unsold Russian language editions of this book have been confiscated by the Russian government.

Readers in both Russia and the United States who are seriously concerned about nuclear war and peace should read this book.

Gee Why didn't someone think of that sooner?
Kriegel and Brandt are so direct in their approach, so simple in their ideas, so refreshing, it begs the question, why didn't someone think of it sooner? As a strategic planning consultant, I believe that any manager in any business will benefit from reading this book. But BEWARE, reading this book can lead to frustration, as you try to implement these heretical concepts in organizations that are not run by Change Ready people. I would love to see them attack our tax code next!

Recommended reading for all managers
Highly recommended for any supervisor or manager who acts as a change agent in their organization. Reflected my own organization in each chapter and I appreciated the specific strategies suggested.

A must read book to help "fix" the work environment.
This book will not only give you the insite but even the courage to identify, corral, and even eliminate many of the sacred cows which encumber your daily work environments. If for no other reason you can use some of the ideas in this book to have a little fun buy just calling attention to sacred cows at the office

This book is a fast read, so it's easy to recognize (and reinforce) what you already know, while picking out the new stuff you didn't know that will help you race faster.

As an example, here are three things that I benefited from immediately. After you read the book, you'll have your own list.

1. The mental aspect of boat preparation. You have to do whatever it takes to KNOW that your boat is fast and ready to win. Otherwise, when you're going slow you'll be making excuses instead of finding what's wrong and fixing it.

2. A killer diagram showing spinnaker pole positioning for reaching. This diagram makes it completely obvious what to do, but it's TOTALLY contrary to the "prevailing wisdom" among most of the folks I sail with. But the first time I used Buddy's position, boy did we point with that chute!

3. A great description of "feathering" the boat upwind on the beat.

As always, the winning combination is read, then sail, read some more, sail some more, then repeat. If you don't go on the water to practice, no book can help you.

The downside is that the book was written before the new racing rules came into effect, so be sure you're fully familiar with the rules before taking Buddy's advice on tactics that rely specifically on rules for their validity. (For example, in one circumstance the advice to a leeward boat is to luff up quickly, and "tap" a windward boat, fouling them out of the race. You'll be on thin ice if you try this in the new rules, with their clear emphasis on the importance of avoiding collisions.)

Sailing Lessons from Buddy
Many books cover the fundamentals of sailboat racing, but few do it with the charm of Buddy Melges, the Olympic medalist and America's Cup defender from rural Wisconsin. The lessons on tactics and boathandling are all here, interspersed with tales of races won and lost (mostly won) by the author. The book is well organized and clearly written. A short story from Melges' early career touches on the importance of sportsmanship without being preachy. Over the years I have read this book again and again as much for enjoyment as for instruction.

Serious about racing?
This is a short, easy to read book. You can knock it off in a couple of hours. What you learn in reading is how to win. No fancy tunning tricks, just the things you need to know how to win--the basics. His record proves the point. It is the best use of $10 I can think of to improve your skills. I'm a sailing instructor and plan to apply some of his ideas to my instruction.
