It's a page-turner; it's a business book: It's both
Enjoy this book. Be gripped by it. Learn from it. I did all three. LEADING AT THE SPEED OF CHANGE is a different kind of business book: it almost reads like a novel. It's a riveting tale of vision, courage, and perseverance, with action guides after each chapter to nail the main points and help you be the hero of your own business story. Authors Capodagli and Jackson cheer Rick Roscitt and his maverick AT&T Solutions team as they Dream, Believe, Dare, and Do their way to phenomenal start-up success. AT&T CEO Mike Armstrong is praised for blessing and nourishing the breakaway unit, and he is also fairly and frankly assessed for re-shaping the corporation into a global communications one-stop shop, and then recently dividing it into four parts. Throughout, Capodagli and Jackson are passionate but clear-eyed observers, and masterful teachers, too. This will be no surprise to readers of their previous books THE DISNEY WAY and THE DISNEY WAY FIELDBOOK which established their business-as-show business approach. In the close, overstuffed warehouse of business books today, Capodagli and Jackson are a welcome and invigorating breath of fresh air.

A Tale of Two Cultures, indeed!
In Leading at the Speed of Change, Capodagli and Jackson combine artful storytelling with hard hitting facts about AT&T and its prize division, AT&T Solutions. The book begins with a flashback to 1993, where AT&T vet Rick Roscitt had a profound vision. And from this creative burst of business energy he, and a team of 12, pioneered Solutions into a model that can potentially alter the way things are done throughout all of AT&T. In a time where AT&T bashing is the norm, it was refreshing to read this book and find a bright spot. But don't think that Capodagli and Jackson were blind to what was happening just down the road. In fact, they pay considerable attention to the impending break up, and what CEO Michael Armstrong and AT&T could have possibly done to avoid this fiasco. In this chapter, I also found that it served as a wake-up call to any business. A small organization can falter as well (or perhaps more easily) from the same mistakes made by this telecommunications behemoth. Capodagli and Jackson rely on their management consulting background to provide criticism as well as prescriptive advice, breaking things down into eight simple, but essential, categories: Vision, Values, Alliances, Acculturation, Predictable Problems, Failing Forward Fast, Quintessential Teams, and Customer Intimacy. For those of you unhappy with the status quo, from the corporate CEO to the small business owner, Leading at the Speed of Change is a must read.

Student teacher of students with LD
This is the textbook I used while in college. It is very easy to read and well organized. It covers all aspects of learning disabilities from history to teaching strategies. It covers all the characteristics of learning disabilities; perceptual problems, motor, reading, written language, math, social and emotional.

Learning Disabilities: Theories, Diagnosis & Teaching Stra
This is an excellent book. It is very readable and quite informative. I used the book for one of my graduate classes in Learning Disabilities. It was also an excellent review source for Praxis II preparation. Get it if you can, especially if you are planning to be a Special Education teacher.

The Special Education Teacher's Bible
I am a teacher of students with mild to moderate specific learning disabilities and I have found this book to be of such a tremendous help, I call it my "special education Bible!"

Professor Lerner has put together a comprehensive book of approaches within the filed of learning disabilities; procedures for assessing and evaluating students; and teaching methods, strategies, and materials. This 8th edition is written with the new IDEA '97 regulations in mind.

Whether you are an undergraduate, or graduate student, pre-service special ed. teacher or an inservice teacher, this text is an invaluable resource that will benefit the novice and the veteran alike. I am in the process of completing my student teaching and I bought this text because I felt that there was so much I still needed to learn about learning disabilities. I am sincere when I say I was not disappointed!

Legal Reasoning and Legal Writing Structure Strategy and Style

Excellant Introduction to legal writing style
The text focuses on constructing proof of a conclusion of law and teaches format, style, and grammar collaterally. The goal is to help students learn how to make the
kind of writing decisions that center on the need to prove analysis. Most students have substantial difficulties learning how to construct proof. If format and style
receive primary emphasis, the problem is compounded because the student is invited to mimic the customary appearance of a document, rather than to think through its
content and inner logic. Moreover, format comes easier to students who have already learned the dynamics of proof, and legal writing's heightened requirements of
style and grammar may be easier to accept when they are explained as ways of clarifying proof. And as a skill, style is much more valuable when rewriting second and
third drafts than in producing a first draft.

Part I of the text introduces students to the court and litigation systems, the structure and operation of rules of law, judicial opinions, and methods of briefing them.
Legal writing in general is introduced in Part II. Part III explains how to write an office memorandum; organize proof of a conclusion of law; use authority; analyze
facts; and use paragraphing, style, and citations. Part IV helps students with their first law school examinations. Part V introduces the advocacy skills of theory
development, argumentation, and accurate handling of procedural postures. Writing a persuasive motion memorandum is covered in Part VI; appellate briefs in Part
VII; and oral argument in Part VIII.

Get Mr. Neumann's Book!
I got this book from the law library at school and I am going to buy Mr. Neumann's 2002 edition if there is one.
This is a good book to have for Law School!

I have read many pre-law books. This book explains so much in just two short concisely written chapters. I do have one small complaint the title of this book is wrong, this book covers so much more!

This book is an introduction to law, it explains and provides a general overview of the civil procedure process and goes over case briefing. I think this book is more useful than Helen Shapo's book on Legal Writing. In short, GET IT!

American Law the Essence of Persuasive Writing
Mr. Newmann, Jr., the author, has captured the essential ingredients of American Common-Law, from it's heritage, rule analysis, and sources of law to it's practical application using lawyerly persuasion with words. Presented is a practical, logical, and understandable book format that supports the applied art of legal interpreting, reasoning, persuasive writing. This book is a must-have for all who desire to analyze facts with rules and then create persuasive or predictive legal written results in legal style.

For the novice entrepreneur or corporate executive
Lessons From Leadership Failures: The Greenfields Approach by management consultant and business start-up expert Denis Orme is an amazing, superbly presented, informative and practical book offering case histories, anecdotal evidence, and cogent advice for making the most of one's business regardless of the produce or service being offered to the marketplace. From the crucial importance of watching one's budget to encouraging teamwork and most importantly, learning from the mistakes of others rather than making the same mistakes all over again, Lessons From Leadership Failures is an encouraging book and excellent guide for the novice entrepreneur or corporate executive wanting to lead their enterprise to an enduring commercial success.

weLEAD Book Review
Lessons From Leadership Failures-The Greenfields Approach is a strategy based on a productive agricultural setting. Imagine for a brief moment that you are a farmer, and when you look outside all you see for many miles are Green Fields. Imagine further that the land is fertile, and that there is an abundance of water. There are no rocks to clear, no trees to fell, just rich fertile land ready for planting of any crop you choose! By applying the Greenfields Approach to business, Denis Orme believes you can envision your potential business and personal opportunities in the same way, without constraint. By doing this, many new opportunities will arise and existing ones will appear different.

The Greenfields Approach is unique and based on a straightforward principle. Too much of the planning and thinking we do is incremental and becomes self-limiting. Too much energy is spent in piece meal planning, benchmarking and strategies. This leads to false assumptions and self-imposed constraints. Denis Orme defines the Greensfields Approach by asking two questions. "If you were starting the business or business unit tomorrow, would you do business the same way?" Secondly, "If you were embarking on a career as a recent graduate, would you launch or grow your career the same way?" He then replies, "If you would not do things the same way, then why are you doing it that way now?"

Lessons From Leadership Failures-The Greenfields Approach has seven chapters and 63 modules. It is a virtual handbook outlining actual leadership failures, the lessons to be learned from these failures and how the reader can do it differently. As Denis Orme candidly writes in the introduction, "This book is about leadership mistakes in each key area of business and the lessons learned from mistakes made by other senior executives and myself." For example, Chapter 5 is entitled Flavor of the Month. In this chapter, Orme cautions against consultants or technologies that attract the latest fad or buzzword to solve problems rather than cost-effective solutions.

Lessons From Leadership Failures-The Greenfields Approach is truly different in approach and purpose. It is not simply another text on leadership, but a serious analysis of past business failures, lessons to be learned and how to do it differently.

Lessons From Leadership Failures
The book is very relevant, practical and one you should reflect on when faced with real business or career issues.

AWESOME BOOK: PERFECT FOR MAC EVANGELISTS & APPLE LOVERS
Guy Kawasaki has written a great book on Apple and the Apple business method. Very funny. Extremely unique and marvelous, like Apple. Perfect for brushing up your Mac Evangelist skills! One of the best books I've ever read, and I'm not even done! Guy truly embodies the Macintosh Spirit. everything about the book, from the footnotes to the illustrations, is like the artistic perfection of Macintoshes! GUY KAWASAKI RULES!!!EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK AND BUY A MAC!!!!!!

Formula for over the top success against all odds
The teams I have been a part of that followed the basic attitude that Guy outlines here have accomplished amazing things against all odds. On other teams, the farther we got away from these ideas, the more mediocre the end results turned out. If you want to create an environment where world changing events will happen, you need to read this book.

Stickingly Simple Basics for a Successful Growing Business
Guy Kawasaki's "The Macintosh Way" empowers the very essence of understanding the principles of evangelism and doing the "right thing the right way" in business. This book and his other book " "Selling the Dream" should be required reading for startup companies. Values and principles in business are the key to success. Guy's keen sense of humour and reference to examples of what did and didn't work for the Apple Computer Corporation, while he worked there in the early 80's, is a fascinating perspective. Here, you will see how an successful company like Apple grows from innovation to mediocrity. For Mac users, this is a praticularly fascinating insight but should be required reading for all CEO's and directors of growing companies. It is an insightful collection of practicle examples of what and what not to do in business.

Essential reading for the seriuos student of strategy.
The purpose of "The Making of Strategy" is to give the reader an insight into how strategy has been made in the past. This is done through various historical case studies which range from Ancient Greece to American Cold War nuclear policy. Each essay tries to show events from the perspectives of those who were involved and attempts to get inside the mindset of the people who had to forumlate and then implement the various strategies.

As has been stated, the essays span a considerable time period, though there is perhaps (definitely in fact) a weighting towards 20th century strategy. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing is probably dependant upon the reader's personal taste but I didn't have a problem with it.

The quality of the essays is invariably of a very high quality and the contributors are leaders in the field of Strategic Studies (Colin Gray, Donald Kagan, Eliot Cohen, the late Michael Handel, Williamson Murray, Macgregor Knox etc). Standout chapters include Holger Herwig's withering analysis of Imperial German strategy in the post-Bismarck period and (by virtue both of quality and of the fact that it tackles a relatively obscure and much neglected power's policy) Brian Sullivan's chapter on Italian grand strategy in the build-up to the First World War.

The chapters (excluding the excellent and extensive introduction and conclusion) cover the following periods;

- Athenian Strategy in The Peloponnesian Wars
- Roman Strategy against Carthage
- Chinese Strategy from the 14th to the 17th centuries
- Spanish Strategy under Philip II
- English Strategy, 1558-1713
- French Strategy under Louis XIV
- The United States, 1783-1865
- Prussia-Germany 1871-1918
- British Strategy, 1890-1918
- Italian Strategy, 1882-1922
- Germany, 1918-1945
- British Strategy, 1918-1945
- U.S. Strategy, 1920-1945
- French Strategy in the inter-war period
- Soviet Strategy, 1917-1945
- Israeli Strategy
- U.S. Nuclear Strategy

Aside from the fact that the quality of the chapters is of a very high standard, the great virtue of this book is the way in which it looks into the way nations have made strategy, rather than dealing with specific strategic theories or trying to provide a guide on how strategy should be made (lessons drawn from history aside). It illustrates clearly the frustrations, the balancing of interests, the difficulty in seeing the big picture, the weighing up of ends and means and the FRICTION that plagues policymakers when they put the books away and actually have to make the magic happen.

This book should be read by anybody with a serious interest in Strategic/War Studies. It's a little gem. At over 600 pages, you get your money's worth too.

Essential for strategy in any field of action
The book brings back historically those features that are essential in any strategy for most activities, altgough is focused in war. Basic reading for bussines.

Excellent & Easy reading
"The Making of Strategy" examines the strategy-making processes through the cultural, social, political, organisational and historical ( not just the military ) lenses, starting from the Peloponnesian Wars to the Nuclear Age. The book is also excellent in inrtoducing the concept of Weltanschauung; how a nation's strategic choices are often products of its strategic culture. This helps the reader to understand that despite advances in military technologies; why most wars are fought the way they are fought. Very easy reading and excellent book on the little known process of how strategy is often made.

Managing Difficult, Frustrating, and Hostile Conversations : Strategies for Savvy Administrators
Published in Hardcover by Corwin Press (09 December, 1999)
Authors: Dennis R. Pollack and Georgia J. Kosmoski
Amazon base price: $45.95

It's a Gem !
Kosmoski and Pollack have written an easy to read, easy to apply book. It is a valuable tool for any administrator. Great ideas for dealing with conflict effectively without giving in and without alientating the parent or co-worker who comes to you with complaints and problems.

I've read this book twice since buying it earlier this year. The succinct vignettes allow for easy access and readability.

Managing Difficult, Frustrating, and Hostile Converstations
As a principal, I found this book to be excellent. It provides the reader with vignettes that relate well to the ISSLC standards. It also provides a foundation and understanding to better prepare administrators for those hostile and difficult conversations that we all will encounter.

A Real- Life, Practical Guide
This book is based on real-world events in every kind of school situation: urban and suburban districts, elementary through high school campuses, adults who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, confidentiality issues, screaming parents, etc. The authors discuss each situation and how administrators responded. They tell us what parts of the scenario were handled correctly AND WHY, and what might be done differently. I feel more confident in my ability to talk to parents and other adults who have a say in my school district. It is a useful guide for teachers and administrators.

Maneuver Warfare : An Anthology
Published in Paperback by Presidio Press (01 June, 1993)
Author: RICHARD HOOKER
Amazon base price: $21.95
Used price: $31.00
Average review score:

overview of maneuver war
This book is a gold mine of the nuances of the on-going development of maneuver war doctrine. Read it if you want to see the future of combat on the battlefield.

This book is prophetic
Though written in 1993, the Anthology still stands especially when you read Col Bolger's warning that maneuverism will not work against a defense-in-depth and LTC Grossman's study on the psychology of war. The other chapters express the desire to collapse enemies with maneuver rather than try to attrit/wipe them out. What we need today is a sequel where we explain 4th generation war, how we need both forces that can collapse enemies with Air-Mech 3-D maneuver AND 2-D firepower/mechanical advantage to overcome enemies in cities; combining Bolger with the other authors into a stronger whole.

These authors are the best thinkers in the U.S. military today and it would be great to see them unite again with some of the new military theorists for a sequel.

Airborne!

Must read for combat arms officers
This is a must read book for combat arms officers. It explores many of the fundamental concepts involved in maneuver warfare, and why small, agile armies usually beat bigger, slower enemies. The arrangement of various topics covered by several authors results in an interesting and intriguing read. Far superion to Leonhards similar maneuver book. The only books that explore this important topic as well are "Maneuver Warfare Handbook" by Bill Lind, and the superb "Warfighting" by Hayden. If you are an Army officer or Marine officer this needs to be on your shelf.

Excellent book on marketing strategy and tactics
I agree with the reviewers: this book is a hidden treasure. Very good content, oriented towards aspiring marketing managers. Covers lots of stuff (consumer behavior, competitive dynamics, pricing, promotions, channels, etc). Focus is on achieving quantifiable results. 5 stars book.

Best-ing Kotler as The Marketing Guru?
Excuse the above pun and forget the fact that this book is required reading in many top-tier MBA programs. This book stands on its own as an excellent marketing reference. Strategy, Theory, Best Practices, Real World Examples...this book's a marketing treasure trove. Only problem with books this good, you'll wish you had the hardcover.

Product Opportunity & Market Valuation
I found the text to provide an outstanding concise summary of product opportunity pursuits and valuation of business/product opportunities. The text includes lots of real world examples that reinforce concepts presented.

fun and comprehensive book for a great innovative game
I had forgotten about this book, but as we've reorganized the home office, I rediscovered it and the game. I think the book manages to capture and enhance the original spirit of the game which is saying quite a bit. I've played the game for hundreds (maybe thousands) of hours, but 75% of the book's insights are still new to me. Master of Magic can be won with many, many different strategies and styles of play (part of what makes it a great game). These authors have obviously looked at the game from every angle with every strategy and obviously pestered the good folks at the developer to get all kinds of detail about how the innards of the game actually work. This should be required reading for anyone looking to develop a turn based strategy game (computer and otherwise). If only the computer players in MoM weren't quite so dim at the end of the game, this book would be even more useful

Valuable Resource for Beginners and Experienced Players
Whether you are just discovering this game or have been playing it for years, this guide is a must-have. It contains information on all aspects of play--spells, skills, races, combat, urban planning, etc, and discusses computer-controlled elements such as treasures, random events, and monsters. The book does contain some debatable rankings and recommendations, but the wealth of helpful information overshadows these few flaws. The authors also did a fantastic job of considering various play styles and game settings when writing this book. This guide is an excellent resource that deserves a place by your computer!

I liked it!
