Dueling Visions: U.S. Strategy Toward Eastern Europe Under Eisenhower
Published in Hardcover by Texas A&M University Press (March, 2001)
Author: Ronald R. Krebs
Amazon base price: $29.95
Used price: $28.95
Average review score:

A comrehensive thesis
Mr Krebs's elucidation in re: diplomatic paradigms twixt Secretary of State John Foster Dulles and Eastern European/Soviet Bloc countries circa 1952 was truly edifying in its analyses and exegeses. His utilization of lucid rhetoric facillitated exemplary cognizance of the subject material.

An Impressive Account.
An erudite yet readable, scholarly yet lively, account of the Eisenhower administration's Cold War strategy, focusing on Eastern Europe. Krebs writes fluidly, and he succeeds in bringing alive the struggles between two contending visions of the region's future--Finlandization and rollback. Like other scholars in recent years, Krebs argues that John Foster Dulles was a far more subtle thinker on international affairs than his public pronouncements would have led one to believe, and Dulles comes across here as the chief proponent of a vision for Eastern Europe modeled along the lines of Finland--that is, domestic autonomy combined with a highly constrained foreign policy. The Cold War began with the Truman administration's Eastern European "litmus test," in Melvyn Leffler's phrase, and the dissolution of the Soviet empire in the region was the Cold War's denouement. In many respects, Eastern Europe has served as the Cold War in microcosm, and Krebs' history of strategy toward Eastern Europe under Eisenhower is an important and impressive contribution to our understanding of the early Cold War. With its last chapter on the implications of the study for international relations theory, this is a book with interest for political scientists as well as historians.

Provocative
This is not the type of book I would normally pick up and read. I chanced upon it at this site and eagerly awaited it's release. I was not disappointed. The arguments were well thought out and ideas presented in a clear, concise manner. I would like to thank the author for the experience and look forward to reading his next published material.

The Dutch for the Attacking Player

Special magic
This book, The Dutch for the Attacking Player, has that special magic that some great opening books have: it is written by a fanatic of the opening, but someone who points out plans for both sides, and explains things with just enough variations, but focused on ideas and themes. But it is not a general or starter book; it focuses very heavily on the variation 7... Qe8, but provides you a whole repertoire against all feasible early white moves. It ireally is a great book, and when you start to play the Dutch, you will have so much fun. I had been playing dreary queen's gambits, and nimzo-indians and queen's indians, and I never enjoyed them. And the King's Indian I like, but not as much as the Dutch. The Dutch is more exciting, and has much more of a shock value on white. I think 1... f5 is the last thing white wants to face when he plays 1. d4. Play the Dutch, and enjoy your chess against 1. d4!

Excellent repertoire book with Qe8 variation!
This book is a repertoire book centered around the Leningrad Dutch - a very aggressive (yet slightly risky for both white and black), tactical line. The specific line highlighted is as follows- 1. d4 f5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. g3 g6 4. Bg2 Bg7 5. o-o o-o 6. c4 d6 7. Nc3 Qe8.

This book has three features that I really like-

1)An intro chapter discussing typical middlegame plans, tactics, and various pawn structure that are likely to arise in this variation.

2)It covers many other sidelines such as staunton gambit, english, etc. that one is likely to face in addition to the main line.

3)It has a final chapter with "test" positions so that you can find out how well you have learned the opening.

Warning! This opening is not for the fainthearted! - If you like an all out slug fest where both sides "burn their bridges" early, and you enjoy putting maximum pressure on white's position-then play this opening.

Note: I have had pretty decent results with this opening. I am currently rated in the 1800-1900 USCF range and I find that many of my opponents are not terribly versed in dutch lines- they spend thier time preparing against the Nimzo-Indian, King's Indian, Queen's Gambit, etc. Therefore, an additional bonus in playing the dutch is that I have generally been more familiar with what's going on during the game than my opponent.

Great book on a diffcult opening-line.
This is a repertoire book for black, and it's geared towards the attacking player. The basis of the suggested repertoire is the Leningraddutch (with 7. - Qe8 ), but the more rare continuations after 1.d4/c4/Ktf3 f5 are also covered using 36 commented games. Analysis of typical dutch middlegamepositions are therefore thouroughly covered.

The books starts with a chapter on the common plans in the dutch for both sides, which gives you a jump start in understanding the opening. At the end there are also 9 strategical tests with the motto "How well do you understand the Dutch?", to test you and give you hints on what parts you need to study again. This book does a great job in explaining a difficult opening system to the point where it becomes close to being percieved as simple.

If you are planning on playing the dutch you must buy this book!

Well worth the price
This is a great book. A number of opening books fall into one of two categories:
1. Excessive numbers of variations to learn, with little explanatory information.
2. Insufficient variations, so that one will frequently encounter over the board situations not given in the book.

This book avoids both of these shortcomings. It gives a reasonably large number of variations - anything worthwhile/likely to be played by white, AND detailed explanations regarding the strategies behind the moves. The variations are all supported by games of leading players. The book is well written and easy to read.

Importantly, it clearly points out some of the pitfalls to be aware of in playing this opening.

It also provides brief but insightful annotations to a large number of complete games, adding value beyond simply opening theory.

Thoroughly recommended.

Excellent Book
This book tells you everything you will need to know about the Stonewall. It also has a huge collection of games where the Stonewall is used. I highly recommend this book to anybody who needs a defence against 1 d4.

Focus on ideas --- Very well done
I am an intermediate class chessplayer looking for a fairly easy opening to play as black against 1. d4. This book presents a viable defense for black. The focus is on ideas rather than memorizing reams of variations. The introduction section alone is worth the price of the book. This section presents the core ideas in this setup. The rest of the book deals with concrete variations. So if u dont want to memorize page after page of informator symbol headache, get this book.

Technology alone just doesn't cut it....
This book contains an awful lot of wisdom for such a slim volume (it clocks in at just under 200 pages).

The authors examine the natures of military revolutions and RMA (a very hot topic that has arguably produced more hot air than substance) and provide a number of case studies examining the issues and testing the authors' views through history.

The case studies are;

- The English in the 14th century
- 17th century France
- The French Revolution
- The American Civil War
- The Prussian RMA, 1840-1871
- The Battlefleet Revolution
- The First World War
- Blitzkrieg 1940

The various case studies are backed up by an extremely satisfying introduction and a thorough, well argued conclusion which fires one or two shots across the bows of those residents of the Pentagon who may be suffering from technology-centric tunnel vision. The authors (very distinguished bunch, it should be said) warn against the idea that Clausewitzian truths regarding such issues as friction can be discounted thanks to the wonders of technology and indeed make clear that they are as important as ever.

The various case studies work extremely well as concise stand-alone works on their various historical periods, even if RMA is not your hot topic. Especially good are the chapters on the English in the 14th century and on the Battlefleet Revolution (and the inner workings of the Imperial German Navy and the Royal Navy during this period).

This is a well written, interesting book which should annoy all the right people.

Concise overview of military revolutions
This book is the volume one should buy if he or she is searching for the best, consise overvue of the history and processes involved in the military innovations of the Western world.

The Heart of Asymmetric Advantage is NOT Technology

This is the only serious book I have been able to find that addresses revolutions in military affairs with useful case studies, a specific focus on whether asymmetric advantages do or do not result, and a very satisfactory executive conclusion. This book is strongly recommended for both military professionals, and the executive and congressional authorities who persist in sharing the fiction that technology is of itself an asymmetric advantage.

It merits emphasis that the author's first conclusion, spanning a diversity of case studies, is that technology may be a catalyst but it rarely drives a revolution in military affairs--concepts are revolutionary, it is ideas that break out of the box.

Their second conclusion is both counter-intuitive (but based on case studies) and in perfect alignment with Peter Drucker's conclusions on successful entrepreneurship: the best revolutions are incremental (evolutionary) and based on solutions to actual opponents and actual conditions, rather than hypothetical and delusional scenarios of what we think the future will bring us. In this the authors mesh well with Andrew Gordon's masterpiece on the rules of the game and Jutland: we may be best drawing down on our investments in peacetime, emphasizing the education of our future warfighters, and then be prepared for massive rapid agile investments in scaling up experimental initiatives as they prove successful in actual battle.

The book is noteworthy for its assault on fictional scenarios and its emphasis on realism in planning--especially valuable is the authors' staunch insistence that only honesty, open discussion among all ranks, and the wide dissemination of lessons learned, will lead to improvements.

Finally, the authors are in whole-hearted agreement with Colin Gray, author of Modern Strategy, in stating out-right that revolutions in military affairs are not a substitute for strategy as so often assumed by utopian planners, but merely an operational or tactical means.

This is a brilliant, carefully documented work that should scare the daylights out of every taxpayer--it is nothing short of an indictment of our entire current approach to military spending and organization. As the author's quaintly note in their understated way, in the last paragraph of the book, "the present trend is far from promising, as the American government and armed forces procure enormous arsenals only distantly related to specific strategic needs and operational and tactical employment concepts, while continu[ing], in the immortal words of Kiffin Rockwell, a pilot in the legendary First World War Lafayette Escadrille, to 'fly along, blissfully ignorant, hoping for the best.'"

Lest the above be greeted with some skepticism, let us note the 26 October 2001 award of $200 billion to Lockheed for the new Joint Strike Fighter calls into serious question whether the leadership in the Pentagon understands the real world--the real world conflicts of today--all 282 of them (counting 178 internal conflicts) will require the Joint Strike Fighter only 10% of the time--the other 90% of our challenges demand capabilities and insights the Pentagon is not only not capable of fielding, it simply refuses to consider them to be "real war." Omar Bin Laden beat the Pentagon on 11 September 2001, and he (and others who follow in his footsteps) will continue to do so until we find a military leadership that can lead a real-world revolution in military affairs.... rather than a continuing fantasy in which the military-industrial complex lives on regardless of how many homeland attacks we suffer.

Easy Guide to the Classical Sicilian: Including Richter-Rauzer and Sozin Attacks

A good "Easy Guide"
This is indeed a solid book. It covers the theory very well in a nice way, since he offers explanations after many moves instead of just listing the variations followed by a "with advantage to black".

Regarding all major variations, he presents general themes and plans for both sides. There are many diagrams, and in some cases the positions in the diagrams are closely related which helps you understand the connection between some plans. In my opinion, these are very instructive.

After each variation is covered, he starts a discussion entitled "Which line to choose in the (for example) Sozin)", where he explains firstly his own view and experience and then generally the differences, which line suits the positional player, the aggressive player, the solid player etc. From someone who has tested different lines in various variations and then read his discussion afterwards, I can say that he is right on many points.

Between me and some of my friends, we own all the Easy Guides in the different Sicilian Openings and a few others as well. In my opinion, this one is the best.

The Best Repertoire Book I've Seen
Easy Guide to the Classical Sicilian does a good job of balancing the need for general information on an opening, as well as getting into the specifics of each variation. The main strength of this book is that it does not try to take huge shortcuts that would keep you from memorizing a lot of material for the sake of being easier. The main variations are all deeply covered, up to move twenty or so in the h6 Rauzer, which prevents doubled f pawns. Some of his suggestions are not technically the "main line," but they are all lines played by top grandmasters including Shirov, Leko, and Svidler. The variations themselves are easily understandable, even up to an advanced stage. This is because the author does a good job explaining the main ideas before each chapter, so you understand the basic early middlegame plan even if you don't know the exact move at the moment. Another plus is that while it is a repertoire book, there are about 6 different ways you could put the lines together to form a repertoire. For instance, in the Sozin you have both the 5. .. Qb6 line, forcing the knight away, but making the game less concrete, or the dangerous (for both players) early queenside activity lines in the sozin and Velimirovic, as well as the main lines. In the rauzer, you have the plan of h6 to kick out the bishop, or choice of several Bd7 lines, with doubled F pawns. This also isn't a book that tells you that everything you play will be able to counter white, in fact in some places the author tells you that at this point black doesn't have a foolproof answer, but it's going to be that way with every line. If you're not yet facing the open Sicilian much, concentrate on the Anti Siclilians, but if you are facing the open more and more, this is the book for you.

Know thy ennemy like thyself.
As a club player, I am often confronted to Sicilian players. I bought this book to find out what I was supposed to play againt the Sicilian. "Easy guide to the Classical Sicilian" not only shows the main variations on many positions types but more importantly it explains the plans behind these positions (the whats and the whys). For each position-type, Jouni Yrjola present, in an easy to understand way, half a dozen or so "Typical methods for White" and "Typical methods for Black". So this book tricked me, in addition to show me how to play againt Sicilian players, it taught how to become one of them!

Eating Disorders-Time for Change, Plans, Strategies and Work
As a therapist in the field of eating disorders for the past 19 years, I was excited to read a book that got to the heart of the concerns that therapists bring to the table when working with people experiencing eating disorders. The book helped me to think about the multitude of issues that permeate our work in the eating disorders field. I appreciated all the practical issues raised in the book, such as the therapist's use of food and drink, the therapist's attire and the many seemingly simplistic but truly complicated concerns that arise in the treatment relationship. This book is a wonderful teaching tool for all therapists in the field of eating disorders.

Great Resource for Clinicians
I have been working with eating disorders for the fifteen years and this is the best book I have read yet. The book offers comprehensive strategies that are very useful. I highly recommend this book if you work with clients who have eating disorders!

Or, variety is the spice of life
Burros offers good, low-fat meals designed to be on the table in 20 to 30 minutes. Organized traditionally by main-dish ingredient (vegetarian, chicken, etc.) each two-page spread includes a full meal, main and side dish, with "game plan" directions and nutritional information. Burros stresses a "strategic approach" to cooking to maximize kitchen efficiency and her directions are simple and easy to follow.

The dishes are simple and delicious and varied - curried potatoes, tomatoes and peas; yellow fruited rice with fish, Chinese chicken and rotini, turkey apple patties.

Perfect for the harried cook, sick of eating the same things all the time.

Eating Well Is the Best Revenge: Everyday Strategies for Del
Of all of my "healthy cooking" cookbooks, this is the one I'd save from fire! The food is truly delicious, and they are easy to prepare. I generally find I increase the sauce quantities, but there is not an appreciable increase in calories. My husband and I have each lost over 20 pounds this year, slowly and easily, with great enjoyment. I got online to order this book as a present for a friend who survived a heart attack, and am sorry to find it not available! Does anyone have a copy to spare? Probably not now, with this glowing review!

I love this cookbook!
I've had this book over a year now and keep going back to it for easy, healthy and most importantly quick recipes. With it, I'm able to serve a variety of meals yet not spend the afternoon cooking them.

AN OUTSTANDING, PRACTICAL MANUAL
Resume writing is a daunting task I've hated for years. Determined to make this a positive experience by tackling the task in new and creative ways, I spent one and a half hours looking through dozens of books on the subject. I chose this one first. But, not until I had looked through dozens more did I come back to THE EDGE and sit down to take a cautious look at its content. At first glance, this is a book packaged to sell and, afraid of "hype-stuff," that made me not trust it initially. (It includes inserts of four-color resumes on real stock inside that, later, I came to find extremely useful.)The authors of the book practice what they preach.

I read THE EDGE in its entirety in one sitting, and discovered that after 22 years of being in the job market there were still a few things I didn't know. I reccommend it highly. Even if you find THE EDGE a bit extreme, the strategies presented in it are practical and relevant to today's job market. (One small section includes tips on scannable and electronic resumes. An extensive appendix includes worksheets you can photocopy.) You can aim between THE EDGE ideas and conventional ones, and still come out ahead.

A Revolutionary Approach to Resumes
Creative resume-writing is often the only thing that gets an applicant noticed. This book is a creative resume writing almanac! Authors Corbin and Wright show hundreds of creative resume examples that can be adapted to almost any situation. Creative use of graphics, icons, and paper create a visual image that is sure to resonate with the hiring authority. Especially great for lawyers, teachers, tech jobs, and professionals.

This got me the job i needed
This book helped me out so much I couldnt even fit in this box. But the ideas that suggestions that they make are priceless!

Globalization---Myths and Realities
Alan Rugman does yeoman service in dispelling the myths of globalization as an omnipotent and omnipresent force in international business. Drawing on a myriad of recent cases, such as Disney and Saatchi and Saatchi, Rugman presents a thorough, compelling and provocative argument that regional markets and intra-firm transactions and relationships within those markets (particularly the triad of Asia, North America and Europe) and not a globalized, cast-the-net-widely juggernaut approach to multinational corporate strategy will continue to rule the day.

An Excellent Read
Alan Rugman is one of the top business school researchers in the world. In this insightful book he takes a different view of globalisation than most. It is very useful and thougt provoking.

Brilliant Injection of Realism into Fog of Controversy
Rugman's "End of Globalization..." is a superb analysis of the international trade of product and services and the nature of foreign investment. He effectively shows how, in reality, international trade and investment needs to be understood in terms of firm and not market activity, and in particular, in terms of the activities of 441 of the Fortune 500 companies. Rugman's work shows how most globalization activity is, in fact, based within a triad of Europe, Japan and the U.S., Foreign Direct Investment is largely intra-firm and industry, and that the key driver is regional and local based economic activity, not a global free-for-all.

Rugman provides examples of how globalization fails (Disney, Saatchi and Saatchi) as well as success stories (ACER) and an analysis of how 20 of the world's multi-national corporations actually operate - i.e., with a strong regional and local presence.

We covers the role of the WTO (demise imminent), protectionism (NAFTA and EU), health and evironmental restrictions, and positions the dot com dream of internet-driven wealth as being one of media hype. There is no single global culture he says, and the new mantra really should be "Think Regional. Act Local. Forget Global".

This book is a brilliant demolition act on the false promises of globalization and also a stinging riposte to the doom-mongering paranoia of the Starbuck's trashers of Seattle and the McLibel crybabies.
