Emotional Make-Over
Like Sara Ban Breathnach's 'Simple Abundance', this book changed my life. Providing direction in these uncertain times, Drs. Valentis plot the course for a reassessment of self that can lead to a beneficial "emotional make-over". I highly recommend it to any woman looking to grow stronger and more self-assured.

BE YOURSELF AND STRIVE TO SUCCEED!
As one who counsels individuals in the workplace, my favourite motto is, "follow your dreams and have the courage, strength and commitment to make them a reality." That message is also portrayed in similar words throughout this book. "Brave New You" is an inspiration particularly to women and those pursuing a career outside the home.

Generally speaking, we are limited only by our own self-imposed restrictions and fears of uncertainty. Anything in life worth having usually involves a risk, and as long as we have a plan in mind and miminize those risks as best we can - go for it! There are some excellent tips here on how to overcome emotional barriers, fears and doubts. The one constant in our lives is change; it can be one's worst enemy or one's greatest salvation. After reading this book, readers will think long and hard before allowing themselves to continually live up to another's expectations; rather, they will place more emphasis on living up to their OWN expectations. The author has written an extremely poignant and motivational book which offers some great strategies. "Brave New You" sends a message to readers that it is okay to be you because each one of us is unique and special in our own way.

Finally, I get it.
Brave New You has completely changed my views of myself and my relationships, be they romantic, professional or familial. I used to do whatever people told me and look down on myself for being such a pushover. Now, not only can I understand why I've behaved the way I did for so long, I have begun to use my new knowledge to make braver choices and finally take care of myself. I gave a copy to my mother and two of my best friends. Now we can talk about the things we've learned and work together to make the most of life every day, for ourselves and each other. I definitely suggest this book for anyone who feels they could be getting more out of life.

Business International's Guide to International Licensing: Building a Licensing Strategy for 14 Key Markets Around the World
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill (October, 1992)
Author: Thomas J. Ehrbar
Amazon base price: $39.95
Used price: $29.72
Average review score:

Ehrbar unlocks the skeletons from key international markets
In this brave, bold, and frequently shocking report, Ehrbar goes beyond the wink and nod of world finance and thrusts us deep into the underworld of international licensing agreements. With courage and conviction, Ehrbar unravels the shroud of secrecy that weaves this international cartel together leaving this once untouchable creature exposed and naked before the reader's eyes. Using riveting investigative journalism, akin to Morrow, Woodward and Walters, Ehrbar risks his own personal safety to bring us chapter upon chapter of nail-biting intrigue and international espionage. Taking the reader through 14 key international markets, we meet the unscrupulous Dr. No Cho Low of The Peoples Republic who crushes his opponents with his trademark "fine-print". In Chapter 57, tariffs and international trade barriers are cleverly skirted through the underhanded loopholes of Vlad Solvaski. Finally, in Chapter 487, Ehrbar gives us hope that international order will prevail when Morry the orphan refuses to succumb to the "final offer" by making a counter demand that leaves the party of the first part weak and defenseless.

Page after page, chapter after chapter, this book is truly a one of a kind masterpiece. Unfortunately, but understandably, Ehrbar leaves us with many unanswered questions, most notably, the existence of the mysterious 15th key international market. These questions will undoubtedly be answered in the long anticipated sequel, provided, of course, Thomas J. Erhbar, himself, does not become then next victim of the International Market cartel.

What's A Perp Got to Do With It?
Big little book; that is little and big both, and especially big in the ideas department. Big subject has to have big ideas, huge ideas in fact. Now take this licensing in perpetuity thing that EVERYBODY has to have these days. You know? What gives? What a perp got to do with it? Huh Ehbar ? What? WHAT? Great big black bat of a book I tell you.

Ehrbar makes licensing come alive!
This book rules! Never before have I been so entranced by the process of finding a suitable local partner for a license, for example. (Did you know this is generally conducted through private negotiations between the parties concerned? In Chile, at least. It's true. All true.)

It sure pisses me off that MacMillan let this masterpiece go out of print. Who the hell is Business International anyway?

Ethics are brought to real life in this fable
This is the story of ethics, choices, and business presented the tale of one Edgar Benchley, a nerd who studies well and enters the world of business, where his questionable dealings keep resulting in his being fired. Ethics are brought to real life in this fable, which uses the story format to impart basics of ethics in the business world.

Excellent, excellent
I absolutely love the new book on ethics by Marianne M. Jennings. She uses a parody to follow four students through their life from high school to middle age. One student, Edgar, has a big rabbit as his conscience. The rabbit appears whenever Edgar faces an ethical dilemma. Edgar repeatedly struggles through life as he sees his three friends achieve major financial gains by being unethical. Ms. Jennings does a wonderful job of illustrating the long-term benefits of running one's personal and business decisions through an ethical filter prior to action. This book should be mandatory reading for all college students.

Must read for anyone in business
I have a unique relationship with the author. While I was an MBA student at Arizona State, she was my teacher. Now, I'm her literary agent. Not only is Jennings the nation's leading authority on ethics, but she's an incredible writer who will make you think and make you laugh. The book is a fable--in the spirit of WHO MOVED MY CHEESE and THE ONE MINUTE MANAGER--that you'll be able to read in one sitting, yet the lessons will last for a lifetime. If you own a company, this is a book you should buy for all your employees.

Great real estate book for your library
I know this book is currently out of print and with the date of 1992, I was hesitant at first to purchase this book. It is a true gem of a discovery, his information can be applied to real estate investing in the year 2001 and beyond.

He delivers the information very well written, and gives incredible ideas of ways to continually expand your ideas of how the appraisal business works, as well as many other timely topics.

The best real estate investing book I have ever read!
This is the best real estate book for the serious long term investor. I have bought four properties from 1992 to 1997 in the depressed Boston area real estate market and would have never been able to without this book. The focus of this book is that you can creat long term wealth by buying and holding real estate in the right location. It is not a get rich quick scheme. This is the serious real estate investors "bible"

Get rich slowy with long-term real estate
Many books on real estate usually tell you get rich quick schemes that never seem to work. This one however, show the important of buying and holding onto real estate much like stocks. The author stresses holding onto the estate, rather than trying to sell it quick to make a quick buck. Throughout the story, the author details his own experiences on his quest for his real estate fortune. After losing money gambling with the commodities, the author decided to try real estate. He started with virtually nothing, and eventually built his estate to be worth more than $15 million in four apartments, and 30 condominiums. This is a definite book to read for those who want to start investing in real estate

A strategy guide done right
This book is, in a word, fantastic. Every single tidbit regarding the game is in here, from the locations of every item and character to detailed walkthroughs of every level. Maps are given for only the most confusing areas, so there is no wasted space anywhere in the guide filled with a map you would never need. The walkthrough takes the screenshot/caption approach, and works very well. All of the pictures are ultra clear--there's never any doubt as to where you are in the game when reading. Each of the four characters' quests are presented in immaculate detail; you'll discover all of Castlevania's secrets in no time. Highly recommended.

Choosing Small, Choosing Smart
I found this book very helpful.... I highly recommend it.

A Message from the Author
According to employment statistics collected by the American Bar Foundation, 74% of all lawyers work in private practice. Of those lawyers working in the private sector, 83% work in firms offewer than 50 lawyers. The small firm market is the source of tremendous job-seeking opportunities for graduating law students and lawyers. While working in the Career Services Office at the University of Pittsburgh, I had the opportunity to speak with hundreds of small firm practitioners and learn about their specific hiring needs. Tapping into their expertise and the expertise of bar association executives and career services directors, who have contributed specific advise "In Their Own Words," my book is an important resource for those contemplating the small law firm market. You'll garner practical advice regarding resumes, cover letters, and interviews as well as networking tips to help you achieve your goal of finding a small firm position that's right for you.

Collaborative Advantage: Winning Through Extended Enterprise Supplier Networks

Success through suppliers
The pursuit of knowledge that gives us an understanding of factors that determine success in the market place has always considered "the firm" as the unit of analysis. This has been the case with microeconomics, game theory, competitive strategy and many such specialized areas of research. Cartels that manipulate supply and prices are perhaps an exception to this rule. If, instead of considering the firm as the unit, we consider a group of firms teaming together to collectively provide value to the customer and succeed as a unique identity as a unit of analysis, the methodology to understand competition would undergo a paradigm shift. This book is precisely about this concept as applicable to the automobile industry.

In the early half of the last century it was possible to go to the countryside for a picnic in a Ford Model T car, disassemble and reassemble it with a simple wrench and drive back home in the evening. Today we need computers to diagnose even a simple problem under the hood of cars tailor made to suit individual needs. Given the increase in complexity, explosion of technology and customer preferences, it is impossible for a single firm to ever think of manufacturing even half the components. (River Rouge will be remembered in history as the most ambitious plan of an automotive giant to make all parts of the automobile - including steel and timber from within the company. At best a fairy tale for kids of the twenty first century!).

This book is the summary of an excellent research study of the automobile industry in the 1990's with focus on Toyota and Chrysler. These companies have significantly different "governance structure" (the proportion of parts made in-house, procured from partner firms, and from arms'-length suppliers) from their competitors- GM and Ford. The firms that have a higher proportion of parts that are bought from partner suppliers have a clear edge over competitors that use arm's-length suppliers for the same parts. Extensive data has been collected, analyzed and tested to substantiate the statements made in the text.

Three characteristics that distinguish between partner suppliers from arm's length suppliers- Dedicated asset investments, Knowledge sharing routines and Inter-firm trust form the virtuous triangle that make these partnerships succeed. The results of such partnerships show clearly in tangible terms - Higher profitability per vehicle, better quality, faster time to market, and more new models for customers; the key parameters that enable Toyota and Chrysler to drive at top speed. "It 's not the big that eat the small but it's the fast that eat the slow".

Taking lessons from Toyota, Chrysler adopts concrete programs to consolidate its suppliers, integrate and partner with them to deliver higher value at lower cost to the customer.

Though this research is restricted to the automobile industry, the fundamental principles of "extended enterprise" can be extended across industries.

Highly recommended for all managers and a must read for those working in procurement processes. Next time your supplier drops in, think of this book and start a new relationship.

A Masterpiece
Having followed Dyer's other research, I think that this is a theoretically elegant piece of work. He builds further on his pieces in SMJ (with Singh from Wharton) and AMR and illustrates the concepts of relationship-based assets in firm networks. The running exemplar has he uses (Toyota) illustrates his theoretical arguments quite elonquently. The book also highlights the limitations of his concept of collaborative advantage, and his closing chapter illustrates how cultural differences (here with Benz) can keep this strategy from becoming reality. This book is not for folks looking for cut-out recipies. This book is a MUST for researchers and managers who like to think instead of searching for cookbooks! The concluding chapter is a gem because it highlights our gaps in knowledge. This is an excellent book, and having read Dyer's other works, it's high quality comes as very little surprise. Buy, own, read, reread, and profusely highlight your own copy! VERY highly recommended.

Highly Recomended!
Jeffrey Dyer, an accomplished scholar and management teacher, has developed a cogent and sophisticated theory of extended enterprise management based on a wealth of empirical data from the history of Toyota in Japan and from his six-year study of Chrysler Corp. before its merger with Daimler-Benz. Beyond being a detailed and rigorous case study of the automobile manufacturing industry, Dyer's book presents an extremely valuable model for vertical integration. His model can be applied to other complex product industries, though he is honest about the limits of its applicability. This book provides a clear, effective blueprint for achieving value-chain collaboration. We [...] recommend it to consultants, executives in complex product industries and leaders in firms that supply components or materials. If you always suspected you were part of a greater whole, now you can be sure.

A satisfied customer...
Finally, a financial aid resource we can use! We've bought several financial aid guides recently in anticipation of our childrens' upcoming collegiate years. All have been either VERY confusing or too light to be of any real use. In "Conquer the Cost of College", the author presents a clear and concise plan to get the most aid for your college bound child. No gimmicks here, just great information, organized in easy to follow steps. If you have a high school student headed for college and are looking to save money, this is THE guide to use...Thanks!

A "Must Read" for Parents & Students!
This is the best financial aid book that I seen! It's written in a clear, consise manner. Thanks to "Conquer the Cost of College", I actually have a better understanding of the financial aid process! The sample letters, budgets and worksheets are an amazing resource. Parents would have to be crazy not to invest in this book. I highly recommend it to all families with high school students.

Our family saved a lot of money using this book!!!
This guide is the best! Step-by-step help in getting government aid, scholarships, and the best rates on loans. The chapter on negotiating financial aid with schools was really helpful in our daughter's case; she was able to go to her first choice school after we wrote an appeal letter modeled on one in the book and got her aid increased SUBSTANTIALLY!
