For the average chessplayer choosing a dependable opening repertoire presents a difficult task. We know that in order to play the opening well we need a sensible set of variations - but which to choose? The main openings entail so much theory that it seems impossible to absorb them without devoting huge amounts of time to the task. Well in this book two masters propose an interesting and dynamic set of interlocked variations against any white opening that won't take years to learn. Of course this is nothing new - many repertoire books for the black pieces exist. However this one is different from most in that the systems given are very solid, sound and logical.
This is not to say that they are to everyones taste. In fact, while I admire the way this book succeeds so well in its aims I don't feel entirely comfortable with the Pirc (the mainline against 1e4) and find the lines against 1d4 interesting but a little awkward somehow. However this is entirely subjective; given the thoroughness with which the authors treat their material I have no doubt that the lines are solid.
So lets look at the book. Thick, attractively presented, nice layout. The material is VERY complete - these guys take writing a repertoire seriously. Tons of variations but also enough explanation to guide the reader. Besides no book can make a claim to completeness without being laden with variations. In a repertoire book the whole idea is that you never need purchase another opening book and this seems true here. There is a nice move index at the back.
Other reviewers have commented on the actual moves against the various white openings so I won't bother listing those. Suffice to say that because 1.e4 is so popular (at least at amateur level) you had better like the Pirc.
One noteworthy feature of the book is the inclusion of a couple of 'second string' systems along with the main repertoire. While the reader would probably be better off sticking to the main lines its nice to have the option and they make useful surprise weapons.
I really can't fault this book. It is a shining example of how a repertoire book should be written. Its all here: a totally self contained and solid system against any white opening. You won't be able to learn it all in a short time. Work is required but that is true of any improvement in ones chess play. I think five stars for a quality book which delivers exactly what it promises and shows what an opening repertoire book should be like.

One of my favorite chess books. I have stumbled around looking for a repertoire for years, and this book, based on 1...d6, brought me home. What is great about it is verified by modern techniques (computer analysis), so the moves given really are good. Plus, I love that it considers weak alternatives by white, that GMs would never play, but you will see often in your internet games, such as 1. d4 d6, 2. e3. Great, great book.

Maybe not explosive but well written and easy to understand. A lot of diagrams which helps if you don't have the time to play the set ups out on a chess board. A great book to help you get stronger playing the black pieces.

There are very few people of any gender that are really able to seperate Martial Arts Fantacy from REAL WORLD Safety. There are even fewer female Martial Artists that can seperate idealistic feminism from pragmatic female survival.

Kristie Kilgore is one of the few who CAN.

In short, if there is a Woman of Girl that you love..... Read this book, then give it to them!...

WOW! What a great book. Extremely informative. I do not have to be a karate expert to save my life. Ms. Kilgore does a great job at providing techniques that anyone can use. I was very impressed with the real life stories that people were willing to share with the readers on things that happen everyday, that I take for granted "this won't happen to me" well,they do. I also was amazed at the things people actually do to your personal identity, on vacation, at home, at school etc...... Thank you for all of the great information that you have provided me!

Ms. Malbin provides insight and strategies that are effective for both professionals and families living with and loving children exposed prenatally. A FASD classic.

This is an excellent book for social workers, rehabilitation counselor's, drug and alcohol counselor's, mental health therapists, teacher's, doctor's, and parent's of FAS/FAE children. The research-based studies showing behavior and life=skills improvement after trying the new strategies of treatment is an eye-opener. Basically, it encourages a new way of thinking in treatment for this population.

I have two children with FAS. This book has helped in so many ways. When my children first came to my home, I lived in a rural area that did not know anything about FAS, from the pediatricians, the schools, the psychologist, etc. I bought one for all of them. I have recently moved to another state, and just last week I had a psychologist ask if I had a spare copy for her. Excellent for the professionals and for the parents!

A definite read for the person who needs to know the practical issues about Quality Management.

One of few books about Deming actually endorsed by Deming himself - "It is a pleasure to commend this book to anyone for easy reading of the principles of management..." (Foreword). A step-by-step, practical introduction to the basics of Deming's management philosophy, far easier to read than Deming's own books, but not attempting to reach the depth of the system of profound knowledge outlined in "The New Economics." Of particular use to managers and students in understanding Deming, and to educators in preparing several famous demonstrations, including the Red Bead Experiment and the Funnel Experiment, with ample illustrations. This is not a lecture, but a self-paced "fun" substitute for "the real thing" (Deming's four-day seminars). Highly recommended.

This book is unique. It has a format that shows f three levels of the Deming philosophy. It deliniates the viewpoint of the man who led those amazing seminars, It brings the subject to earth with a narrative, and it supplies the wonder of a first-time participant. This is the book I give my students when they ask what Dr Deming was like.

After borrowing both Fussbuster books from the library I knew I had to own them. After teaching/working with children for 15 years and currently being a foster mom... this book still inspires me, gives me new insight into the minds of older toddlers and preschoolers, and really does help me "smooth over the rough spots in my day".

I highly recommend this book as a must have for every parent who is interested in making their day and that of their child's more peaceful and as stress free as it can be with children.

This is my new favorite baby shower gift. It might not be used immediately, but it will be reached for again and again when that infant becomes a preschooler. This book is the best ! The ideas are easy, affordable, easy to remember and just plain do-able. I also highly recommend Fussbusters on the Go. Sincere thanks to the author for these 2 books. They are lifesavers!

It feels like I am chatting with a friend over coffee and problem solving about a crazy weekend. There were some great ideas but even the auther reminds you that all the ideas are not right for everyone which keeps you from feeling like a complete failure (a la Martha Stewart). Good kid stories that make you smile and even laugh aloud and Reminds us all to have FUN!

Shirley Kurnoff has pioneered this remarkable study. It provides for an absolutely enlightening experience, which empowers the reader to best comprehend the very many sides of this common and often debilitating problem. A pleasure to read, and an indispensible tool for accessing resources for dyslexics and their families. Bravo!

As a high school teacher, I have found Kurnoff's book to provide both guidance and comfort. The interviews speak to the many particular issues faced by families looking for answers and direction. The very positive tone of the book leaves the reader with a sense of empowerment. I have suggested this book to colleagues and parents and they all share my enthusiasm and appreciation.

Having been raised side by side with two dyslexic siblings, I wish this book was available years ago. Great stories to relate to, and wonderful tips.

I'm one of those people who buys every strategy guide for every game I have worth playing. The guide for Imperialism II is one of the very best I've read. It contains very helpful advice on sound strategies covering each aspect of the game and has a very helpful section outlining research options. Highly recommended.

I was pleasantly surprised by the information content, analysis, and true strategic content in the strategy guide. At a time when few strategy guides for war and strategy games are worth buying, this is a strong exception.

Ok teachers, here is the truth:

Easy to use. Practical. Great table of contents to get the info you need. Each chapter short, direct, and tells you exactly what to do. I don't know how I ever taught reading without this resource. You'll have to hunt to find it (I bought my copy used) but it's worth ALL the effort.

I am a first year teacher and first glanced at the book in a reading methods course. I found that in my first year of teaching it has been very helpful for ideas to boost reading skills. The information is orgainzed for easy access and is very practical for everyday situations

I was priveldged to take a reading methods class from Mrs. Lenski. The book is an excellent source for ideas and strategies to meet the needs of different types of readers. The book is orgnized so that busy teachers can easily find the information they need.

It is unfortunate that so many marriages are falling prey to midlife crisis (if you want to call it that). Point is our disposable society makes it too easy to divorce. This book is a pratical guide to help you traverse this journey. Not only is the book an easy read and very helful in understanding and keeping yourself in check, it really focuses on learning about yourself and not talking blame for your wayward spouses issues. It helps you be a better you! As well, the website listed is a direct link to others suffering the same things. That site has so much information, one could read for days. There is also chat which is helpful and one bonus is that friends can be made to last a lifetime. This book has it all and I implore anyone in the throes of this anxiety called midlife crisis to read this book and then peruse the site for loving and supportive help. It is a truly a gift to know you are not alone.

I found this book to be easy to read, and chocked full of practical and sound advice, along with comforting words and stories from others who have been on that journey.

For anyone who has found themselves on a path of confusion, as well as those who are dragged along for the ride, this book will give comfort and hope to many. I have read through it several times, and find something new in it every time. I highly recommend it.

This is an extremely helpful book on the various ways to handle your significant other's (s/o) MLC. Although its focus is on men, it is beneficial to both sexes.

It doesn't just tell you to hang on or act as if as some anti divorce sites suggest. It tells gives you real life stories of various people and how they handled their s/o MLC.

It also shows there is life, no matter which road you take, whether it be riding out the rollercoaster ride, getting a divorce, getting a legal separation or just co-existing until you KNOW what is the right course of action for you.

The book even shows humor in the whole process because when experiencing either your own MLC or someone else's...you have to be able to find humor.

I highly recommend this book for those going through or being affected by someone with MLC. It's a very easy read and you'll find yourself closely relating to these individuals.

Reading this book is like a trip through my sales carrier, but more. While reading I could relate to the situation, but see new ways to reach a positive result instead of hitting the wall.

The author has a way of relating real situations. To often self-help sales books don't relate to real life.

This is an easy read, keeps your attention with humor, and makes you take a good look at yourself, and how you go to market. Read this book if you want to feel like your there, and learn how to eacape the numbers game and the pain that goes with it, learn to have fun selling.

A friend recommended this little book to me. "Powerful stuff," he says. "Not the usual sales messages. You might find it stimulating."

How right he was! There are some really important messages in this volume for people who want to be really effective in the sales process. Whether we're professional salespeople or professionals who have to sell our services and products, we need to know how to reach the right people in the right way to earn the desired decisions. There are probably more books, tapes, and training courses on sales than on any other topic.

This one is different. Subtle. Higher level. If you're a CEO, the owner of your company, or operate at a pretty high level (or you should be), invest a little time to read this book. It won't take you long. The reading flows well, the anecdotes provide effective and believable illustrations, and the chapters are only long enough to make their points. The summaries at the end of each chapter will keep you focused.

You'll learn 16 steps to high achievement as you open your mind to increasing your odds of success. Some of what you read will be new, thought-provoking ideas. Some will be insights that jog your memory and almost embarrass you. To be honest, before I finished this book I was starting a list of things I need to do differently. As you move out of your comfort zone (read: "rut"), you'll realize how a few changes in your process-and your thinking-will drive much different results.

A bonus (and you'll appreciate why I say this after reading this book): the author's address is in the book so you can send him a note to thank him. If you're open to significant change that will overwhelm the competition, read this book soon. My only concern is that my competitors may see this!

I enjoyed reading the book by Bill Byron Concevitch. Once you start it you will be reluctant to put it down. Easy reading,practical, and his references to real life business situations really hit home. A must read for every new salesperson. Old timers can definitely relate as well. Kudos to Mr. Concevitch.
