worth the price of admission for the the michael milken story that ran in Harpers.

A diverse, well-represented collection
From print media and journals to business and general interest publications, the authors have searched for the best business accounts from the past year, providing vignettes and accounts primarily nonfiction in content, but telling of business goals, individuals, and strategies. A diverse, well-represented collection.

Terrific (and buy 2001 too)
Great anthology from a wide variety of sources (the usual financial journals plus some interesting exotic publications (Mother Jones?)). Not a clunker in the lot. Buy this one and its 2001 predecessor and you will be fascinated. Hope this series continues for many years...

THE textbook on squeeze play
This isn't the sort of book you pick up for 10 minutes before bed... it's the sort that you read at a desk with a pad and paper to take notes with! If you're willing to put the time and effort into a serious reading of this book, however, you will learn a tremendous amount.

If you're looking for an accessible, casual introduction to the subject, look elsewhere (I highly recommend David Bird's _Bridge Squeezes for Everyone_). It's also not suitable for beginning players. This is a book for serious study but is well worth the effort.

Review by an non-expert bridge player
Absolutely fantastic book on squeezes! The book gives a fairly complete survey all types of squeezes and explains the background and particular structure of each type. It does not just give a lot of diagrams and shows that a squeeze of some type exists. Instead it provides a very clear description of all conditions and the reasoning behind 'the cards should be played in this particular order'. I especially love the chapters on double compound squeezes!

THE definitive textbook on squeezes--bar none.
If you are a true student of the game, whether intermediate or expert, and you are comfortable with a "textbook" type structure (most science and math people are) then this is an absolute MUST for your bridge education. Suffice it to say that I read it for the first time in 1970 and 5 times since (the last in 1997-8), and have expanded my knowledge of this subject significantly each time. This is a book that requires time and devotion. If you are willing to put in the effort, and you have any talent whatsoever, this book will add to your enjoyment of this greatest of card games immeasurably.

This book is great!
It includes instructions on how to beat the individual missions, tips for playing the AI, differences between Nod and GDI. A great book for a great game! A definite buy!

I think it was a great book.
This book helped me beat Command and Conquer Tiberian Sun. It helped because I was stuck on the last GDI mission and the sixth Nod mission. The book helped me beat these missions so that I can go on.

This book helped me out a lot
This is a really good book i don't think that i cold have beaten the game without this book it tells u all about the units and what to do in each of the missions

Competing for Talent: Key Recruitment and Retention Strategies for Becoming an Employer of Choice

Competing For Talent, by human-resources consultant Nancy Ahlrichs, is a solid and accessible resource for anyone who recognizes that "people (not technology or products) are the key to organizational success, innovation, and profitability." Ahlrichs advocates becoming an Employer of Choice, or EOC, which charts "new strategic directions that put people in the profit equation." Although there is no one-size-fits-all approach to recruiting and retention, she outlines some of the tools and techniques already in use by others along with her own advice for embracing them. A lengthy Introduction examines profitability in a tight hiring market, and offers ways to document turnover costs and uncover its causes. Part One explores the tactics used by some successful EOCs, and presents specific ways to adapt them. Part Two focuses on recruiting, examining the processes and technologies involved as well as some underutilized sources for quality candidates. Part Three looks at retention, laying out tactics for lowering turnover that range from improving compensation and benefits to total cultural rehabilitation. A final section offers information specific to "information technology brainpower." --Howard Rothman

Comprehensive, Well-Organized, Informative
Employers are continually concerned about competing with each other to hire and hold the best employees they can find. Sometimes this competition becomes a frenzy, since the best people-qualified, experienced-are in high demand. It's essential, to compete well, to become an Employer of Choice. Ahlrichs, in her preface, observes that employers of choice "know that their 'choice' status is a significant achievement attained through consistent application of comprehensive strategies and tactics, as well as top-bottom organizational responsibility for retention.

This book is divided into three important sections: the big picture, recruiting, and retention. In Part One, How Employers of Choice are Winning the Talent Wars, the three chapters focus on Learning from Employers of Choice, Employer of Choice Foundation Strategies, and Building and Communicating a Top Employer Reputation. These writings present a good overview and insight into how Employers of Choice are operating. The orientation is to understand what these companies are doing, rather than a how-to approach. There is a lot to learn here.

The second part, Creative Strategies for Recruiting Top Talent, offers the readers four chapters, starting with How Employers of Choice are Redesigning Recruitment. The next chapter, Only You Will Do, has a little more instructional tone, but still primarily takes a third person view. This chapter concludes with a helpful Orientation Checklist. Chapter 6, Surfing for Recruiting Results Online does provide a healthy amount of how-to. While this field is changing almost daily, there is a lot of value here for the reader. Plenty of website domains are included. The last chapter in this section, Finding New Hires in Unlikely Places, is filled with good ideas. Here I felt a lot more of the how-to I was looking for.

The third section is entitled Comprehensive Strategies for Retaining Top Performers. Here the chapters are titled Understanding Why Employees Leave; Managing and Leading for Retention; Retrain, Develop, and Profit; and New Compensation and Benefits Strategies. There is a lot of value in these chapters-lots of ideas and perspectives. An exit interview guide will be helpful to those companies that have not taken advantage of this tool. The author seems to really hit her stride in providing ideas for readers in this section. The same holds for her conclusion, Becoming an Employer of Choice.

The book is well-written, filled with valuable information for the reader. The solid chapters are supplemented with a good resource guide and an index. I'd recommend this book for company owners, senior executives, and human resource professionals. As an ethical reviewer, I must share with you that I am co-author of "How to Become an Employer of Choice," a competing title in the same field. With that perspective, I would be quite comfortable recommending my clients read "Competing for Talent" as a supplement to my book.

A handbook on the retention of your most valuable asset
An easily understood, quickly assimilated read. I read the entire 200-page book at one sitting, and shared ideas with the co-owners of my company right away. Usually, business management textbooks are full of jargon. Competing for talent is in plain english, and can be applied immediately.

Excellent competitive intelligence on corporate culture
This book offers "heads up" competitive intelligence that will work for any company or organization that wants to attract and retain a high quality workforce. I have seen bits and pieces of this information as we have worked with our own corporate culture. Having "Competing for Talent" in my hands five years ago would have saved us a great deal of research.

The compleat strategyst : being a primer on the theory of games of strategy
Published in Unknown Binding by ()
Author: J. D. Williams

Used price: $2.20
Collectible price: $5.00
Average review score:

Excellent, entertaining introductory text
This is a superlative introduction to a mathematical concept which, with a lesser writer, could be tedious to learn. Williams includes many entertaining and enjoyable story problems, replete with attractive illustrations, that make learning the subject a joy. He takes an inherently interesting topic and makes it easy and fun to learn.

I recommend this book unreservedly.

A Fun Introduction to Game Theory
The Compleat Strategyst by J.D. Williams is a wonderful introduction to the ins and outs of game theory. The pace of the primer I found quite reasonable, and the organization is very natural. The Compleat Strategyst begins with the gist (as it should) regarding game matrices and how to interpret them. Williams's discussion then proceeds through 2 x 2 games, 2 x m games, 3 x 3 games, 3 x m games, and so on. Each section contains clever story problems chosen to both re-enforce basic principles and point to potential pitfalls. Also provided are numerous exercises to build the skills necessary to understand game theory.

One of the most enjoyable facets of The Compleat Strategyst is J.D. Williams's entertaining writing style. He seems to know the kind of people reading his book (non-mathematicians who think they might be able to apply game theory to their own work - in my case anyway), and the text is taylored to that audience. In addition, while making the subject matter of game theory accessible strictly through arithmatic, the author provides fair reminders that a great deal of actual mathmatics is being swept beneath the rug.

Excellent
I found this book to be an excellent introduction to game theory that doesn't require much mathamatical background beyond simple algebra. It comes complete with theoretical explainations of the game matrix, problems to help sharpen your skills, and strategic stories that fit with a game matrix, to help show how game theory can be applied to real problems. A definite must for anyone who wants to start learning about game theory.

This book will save your sanity !!!!
I bought this book before (thank goodness) our child was born. It has saved me a lot of time to enjoy our child & we make the most of the time we have. There are so many helpful hints in this book!!! Every parent with babies & young children definately needs a copy! You will like it so much, you will buy a copy for all your friends.

Great Book for Dads!
I was given the first edition of this book as a gift (this new one appears to be a second edition) and it turned out to be the most useful of all the baby books we have. We were really able to prepare for our son so that we could get the most sleep possible after he arrived. This book is packed full of useful tips like what to buy and where to put it in order to make the most of the time baby is awake (and so you don't waste time when baby sleeps), what to do with your toddler when you need to sleep when baby sleeps, and how cook without the frustration of a fussy baby. This book was essential to surviving those first few newborn months! Two Rattles Up!

This Book is a Must Have!
I am living far from family and close friends, so I knew I wouldn't have much help in the daily routines of having a baby. I needed to find some practical ways to integrate the baby into our busy schedule, and still get the rest I so needed as a new mom. I bought this book last year when I was searching the internet looking for a "get more sleep" type book. It was a good choice! The book was well organized and the "crib sheet" to-do list feature made it easy to set ourselves up so that we'd get more sleep when baby arrived. The fact that this is a "mom written" book is a big plus. It's a "reality" baby book with plenty of straight talk about how tough it really is to care for a newborn. But what makes this book a real "must have" is that it provides real solutions! I'm so glad I had this book when I was pregnant! Since there are plenty of tips and chapters devoted to what to do with siblings when you're trying to get more sleep, I'm looking forward to using it again when I have my next child

Hands down the best marketing book out there.
Easy to read? Yes. Complex ideas? Yes. Will it help me on my job? YES! I am always reading the latest books on marketing and this one is so much better than the rest. I cannot believe someone did not write a book like this sooner. I have seen Lois speak at several DMDNY trade shows to fully packed auditoriums and it's no wonder. She knows what she is doing! She explains it all so clearly whether you attend her talks or read her books. But Customers For Keeps is her best work yet. Keep up the good work Lois!

perfect for anyone interested in creating customer loyalty
using a very clever format customers for keeps doesnt wack you over the head with a do this and do that mentality. this book guides you through the process of why programs work well and how you can do the same thing. the examples are entertaining and informative. think what color is your parachute meets the wealthy barber. five stars plus.

A great read.
Customers For Keeps is one of those rare business books that does not pontificate information. I was educated and entertained while reading this book and what a rare combination that is these days. A thoroughly pleasant read and one I am sure you will also enjoy.

Wonderful book that all should read
This is one of the best books out there that addresses the school bully issue. This book is full of lists and charts that you can use. Although it is targeted for elementary and middle school aged kids, any parent, teacher, or other school official can benefit from this book. Dr. Beane has done some great research, all of which has been put into the writing of this book. He is one of the leading experts in this field, and has a lot of good information. I strongly recommend this book...thanks for everything Dr. Beane, I know the knowledge I've gained from you will be helpful in all of my educational endeavours.

Very helpful guide for dealing with school violence
If you are researching the subject of school violence as a teacher or a parent, this book is a good place to start. The author, Allan L. Beane, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Special Education at Murray State University in Kentucky. He specializes in developing violence-prevention programs for public schools and teaches workshops on this subject.

After so many years of increasing violence in the public schools, most of us need no convincing to believe this is a vital issue that =must= be dealt with. Though this well-laid-out guide is written with the school teacher mostly in mind, I would not just recommend it for teachers. No anti-bullying program can begin in any school without the administration, teachers and parents working together. So it is important, whichever of these categories you fall into, to know what is in this book.

In the context of the current books that are out there on this subject, this one is excellent and makes a very useful contribution. However, since there are, sadly, so relatively few books out on this subject, to anyone seriously researching this subject, it is highly recommended that you read not just this book, but all the other books currently available (most of which are for sale here on Amazon).

Basic Bullying
I am an elementary school teacher and this book covers the basics of bullying in the classroom and on the playground and what the class and the teacher can do to prevent it and deal with it. It also gives ideas on how to cope with bullies in life outside of the school. The book is well organized and easy to read. It has a lot of rules/ideas in graphic organizers for easy transfer to posters. There are a lot of pages to copy for the kids to use to discuss and understand bullying. This is a good book to read to make school a safe place to be.

The Complete Alekhine (Batsford Chess Library)
Published in Paperback by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (November, 1992)
Author: Graham Burgess
Amazon base price: $22.95
Used price: $14.99
Average review score:

Excellent
I loved this book. The thing is, it's rather old and might be out of date (I'm sure it is). Burgess is a very thorough writer on the openings.

Change of Pace to King's Pawn Opening
The Complete Akekhine contains over 240 pages of well documented material on the virtues of this system for Black (1.e4 Nf6). It's not an easy defence to master however. Invariably, the Knight on f6 is forced to several different squares by pawn thrusts on White's part on many occasions. This is a double edged sword. White either ends up getting his advanced pawns picked off or develops a strong enough initiative that suffocates Black. I've had varied success with it, but seem to do better in Blitz games where my opponent has less time to come up with more solid moves. I can definately see the potential though and i recommend this book to anyone looking to avoid the Ruy Lopez, Giuoco Piano, King's Gambit or if you're tired of using or unfamiliar with the French, Caro-Kann, Sicilian, Pirc or the Modern defences. It's certainly challenging and fun.

A Straightforward, Detailed Treatment
Graham Burgess writes a fine book, which both presents the virtues of Alekhine's Defense, while pointing out the white lines that make it a challenge to play. He does not try to make up frothy generalities about the theory, recognizing that the different variations can lead to very different treatments subject to case-by-case analysis. I am a B player, who found this book both easy to use and substantive. The Alekhine is a fun, quirky and very complex opening. I added it back to my blitz arsenal after reading this book.

Not just for World War II flying buffs.
This story is a writer's godsend - a fantastic story that has historical implications, interesting characters that are also heroes, very important situations and settings, tension and high drama. Brickhill does a great job telling the story of the squadron that became known as the Dambusters. This book gives us the story behind the raid - he science and hard work developing the technology behind the success. It also follows the further raids of the men of 617, and the development of the bombing technology as the war continues.

Brickhill balances the story between the technology and the human. All of 617 come across as sterling chaps, which is to be expected. I was surprised that the writing in this book did not seem dated, considering when it was written.

While not really 'faults' there are some 'less than perfections': while Cochrane, Wallis, Gibson and Chester all are clear and memorable characters (these are major players in the book), many other characters get the occasional mention here and there that leaves you wondering 'And which one was he?' This is also a book aimed a people with military knowledge. Therefore if a reader is not completely au fait with military terms (or fortunate enough to have someone nearby who is, like I was) you may occasionally feel a bit clueless. And after the last major action of the book - the sinking of the Tirpitz - the book seems to lose its edge (though the epilogue is a very good roundup of what happened to whom). But overall this is an entertaining read by a great writer about an exciting story. Not just for World War II flying buffs.

True-life high adventure. TARGET: From Rhur dams to Hitler!
I first read this story as a freshman in high school and couldn't put it down! I have re-read the book several times since then. The adventures of 617 Squadron have all of the elements of an Indiana Jones movie; from the most inovative, fantastic, and bizarre ideas (five-ton bouncing bombs to ten-ton, earthquake producing "Tall Boy" bombs) to shear, white-knuckle, edge-of-your-seat danger (low-level night flying over Nazi Germany). Check out Paul Brickhill's "The Great Escape" and "Reach for the Sky." You won't be disapointed

A first-class true-life epic of WWII British Aviation
I have read, and re-read this book many times over the last several years. Having studied 617 Squadron operations in general, and meeting some of the few survivors, I can't get enough of the inside story on this wonderful special-ops squadron. Also please read Enemy Coast Ahead, by Guy Gibson, who was the original Dambuster's leader. I find many of the ops after the dams raid to be even more interesting and harrowing !!
