Excellent quick reference book
The psychiatry 2002, is an excellent quick review of psych. In the clinics it will give you easy to read summaries of all topics in psych and treatments. An ideal book for any med student or resident.

Psych Clerkship
Great reference for the psych clerkship. Written by same 3 authors at UCI who write the psycho-pharmacology book for CCS.

Good quick reference
A good light handbook for quick reference on the run. Point-form and well laid out. Ideal for helping with differential diagnosis. I like the practicality & succintness of the information in it, as I can go to bigger texts if I want details. Bonus is that, if you own the handbook, you can download free a PC version, as well as a Palm, or EPOC (Psion Revo/Mako) versions. Mine is on a Revo and goes around with me when I'm on call.

Classic of lasting value, early focus on C4I, rotary, OoA Op

This is one of the essential "middle ground" books in my lecture of core readings about strategy and force structure (see my list).

Brigadier Simpson was one of the first, and is still among the best, to focus on the role that both C4I (command, control, communications, and intelligence) as well as rotary wing capabilities (including vertical short take off and landing) would play in placing eyes on target, boots on the ground, and in strategic, operational, and tactical mobility.

He notes that secret C4I is largely counterproductive.

He also focuses on the dramatic implications for force structure as well as intelligence of "out of area" (OoA) operations becoming the norm. The United States and the rest of the world are, for example, completely unprepared for no-notice asymmetric and tribal warfare in Africa, where the United Nations is trying to deal with five complex emergencies as this is written (Burundi, Congo, Ivory Coast, Liberia, and Sudan).

If you can get a copy used, go for it. Worth republishing.

Powerful, forward thinking military theory
"Race to the Swift" is a sweeping review of military strategy, organization and logistics that has suffered little for being 15 years old. Yes, the NATO references are dated, but they in no way impact a core thesis that is even today ahead of its time. That said, this not an easy book to read; in spite of Simpkin's rather engaging, almost conversational writing style, the material is technical and dense. Moreover, given the comprehensiveness of the work, the reader will sometimes find himself or herself losing focus. However, if you are a student of military theory, and comfortable with the field, this is a book well worth the time it takes to read.

As one might imagine, "Race to the Swift" is a call for speed and stealth in military action. It's not just about technology, however; Simpkin goes to great lengths to examine political/home-front issues, logistics, and military hierarchy. Ultimately, though, these all serve as supporting evidence for his core argument: that the current heavy mechanized divisions of today are too slow in light of the incredible increase in available firepower on the modern battlefield. As an alternative, he calls for armored, stealthy, heliborne cavalry. Traveling in something akin to airborne tanks, capable of deploying on conventional tracks when necessary, these new formations would deploy off of submersible helicopter carriers. Obviously, this thinking is more revolutionary than evolutionary, some of it even smacks of science fiction, but the core validity of his argument, that an exponential increase in speed is called for, is undeniable.

Of particular note for the times we live in are the final few chapters, especially the last one. In them he examines what it means to "wage war" in the age of non-state actors. His arguments on the use of Special Forces backed by the appropriate application of conventional forces seems to have been borrowed wholesale by the planners of our operations in Afghanistan. Also very interesting is Simpkin's exploration of the legal language necessary to maintain the integrity of our western values in our post September 11th world.

In the end this is a work of immense value. As I said earlier, though, the reader has to be committed to taking something out of it. When you are, when you look past the Central European staging for the writing, you will find a work that is rich in both theory and practical application. The way in which it relates to our current situation is almost uncanny, and the guideposts it offers for the future are immensely valuable. I suspect that in the years to come we will hear many of Simpkin's ideas being revisited. The nation in general, and our leaders in particular would do well to pay them heed sooner rather than later.

Finally Back in Print
Not for your average Joe, but Simpkin's thesis should not be lost on anyone: swiftness. Since first published, the world has witnessed numerous conflicts which either could have been avoided, concluded earlier, or fought more decisively if effective forces could have been deployed much faster. It is incredibly pertinent in the emerging era of the asymetrical approach, where threats emerging faster and in a wide variety of terrain. (We can't expect future adversaries to give us months to build up massive mechanized forces in ideal terrain like Hussien did!) Simpkin points out very practical limitations to our current heavy forces -- like getting a 70 tonne tank over a third-world bridge or down a narrow twisting road. As the US Army begins retooling for the 21st century, Simpkin's work is incredibly relevant. Not the easiest book to follow, but worth the effort.

WOW! WOnderful!!
I went to Linda's workshop that went along with this book and I left with more ideas than I have ever gotten in any workshop or college course!! This book is a must have for any elementary teacher, elem. student parent, any Special ed teacher or ESL teacher. I keep the book and my notes right next to my lesson plans. The ideas for reading comprehension are so creative and a wonderful escape for learning from pencil and paper questions.

Very useful!
Unlike other books that just give you graphic organizers without the reason or strategy behind it, this book shows how and why to use the great reproducibles. She also tells how teachers should initiate a retelling or get kids to revisit the text. Her techniques are much like what I learned in my literature-based course but she gives a simple format to use instead of me having to think of my own. These reproducibles can be done with any age and are great to use where certain children have weaknesses. I highly recommend this book! This is not a book that will be stuck in a shelf! I have many great resource books that are almost a necessity but for a majority of the time I never touch them. I have used this book time and time again with great success!

Wow! What an amazing and easy to use tool for teachers!
This book contains an incredible amount of useful information and ready to use strategy sheets for students. Includes wonderful pre, during, and post reading strategies to help students with their comprehension. Also includes great student self-assessment sheets. Extremely easy to use for teachers! Highly recommended!

Secrets of Good Books
Ok, endgame books are mostly raw facts and calculation. Accuracy is more important than writing ability. If you purchased this book, there is no doubt what you expected to take from it.
When I found the first typo on the first page of chapter one I thought I made a bad purchase. I don't care about excuses...poor editing, hard to translate from German, or anything else.
As I continued to read I found the book to be better than I had expected. Once I got used to the codes and symbols, the book was very enjoyable. The exercises were outstanding. They hammered home the critical ideas without wasting your time on exercises that would never occur in an actual game. And yes the book was very accurate. I learned a few new ways to quickly evaluate complex positions. The order of the exercises was perfect. Each exercise built on the previous exercises as they flowed smoothly through the book. You can not spend too much time with a book like this.
After living and playing in Germany for the past two years I am amazed at the strength of German players and their passion for the game. They are absolutely crazy about chess. I find chess everywhere I go in this country. These two authors are a direct reflection of chess in Germany today. I will look for more of their books. , SFC Enochs, US Army

Corr. Squares...
Pretty readable. Bathroom book. Slow enough to glance at a chapter a week- in the tub. The book should help any C,B,A players get much stronger quicker...wish there were more detailed endings with their correpsonding opening structures though- ie. sicilian, french etc.

Your Second Endgame Book
Unfortunately, explanations of pawn endings tend to be more mystifying than helpful to players of average talent (like me). Even single pawn endgames can seem so puzzling. However, with a little work even average players can understand this book. I suspect it would be helpful to unusually talented and experienced players as well.

I feel that for most player's purposes this book is a little better than Averbach's book, but it's most fun to have them both and compare their explanations. Averbach's book spends far more time on the theory of corresponding squares, while this book is more practical. In short, don't despair if you can't find Averbach's book; this one is very good.

If you've read a basic introduction to the endgame, and want to go deeper, this is the next step. All other endgames constantly threaten to reduce to pawn endgames, so these are fundamental concepts. As it says on the back cover, "Without an understanding of [pawn endings] it is impossible to master more complicated endings." That is absolutely true.

Many players will feel that pawn endgames are boring, but in reality they can be very beautiful. If you learn to enjoy them, then your enjoyment of the entire game of chess will increase.

Secrets of Personal Marketing Power
I love it! I found Secrets of Personal Marketing Power to be timeless in content and extremely valuable to my dental practice. The 26 secrets are powerful and useful in any business. This is a must read for anyone wanting to have an effective marketing advantage.

Don Price is the Guru of Marketing
I have used Don's techniques in both my personal and professional life, and it works. Don's easy approach takes the work out of marketing by making it not only beneficial but fun. The resutls I garnered from his advice has helped me increase my profitability by more than 30% in the first quarter of implementation. Thanks Don for writing such a valuable tool.

A wonderful reference guide!
Don Price's book is an upbeat, step-by-step, guide to achieving your business goals! I particularly liked it because it was so positive, easy to read, and contained lots of suggestions in a step-by-step manner for marketing yourself. It seemed pretty comprehensive, filled with both practical and innovative ideas. He concludes the book with especially good (step-by-step) questions to help you develop your own marketing action plan. In addition to that, the Appendix includes lots of sources of support for your marketing efforts - business cards, directories, publishers, audio/videotape producers, etc. I think this book would be a really great gift item, too, particularly for those friends starting their own businesses!

Must Buy.
When this book arrived I thought it was a text book. However, as a business owner who works with small businesses and organization, who value employee development, I found the authors' approach to processing learning experiences as a winner. This is a MUST BUY for any trainer or consultant who uses experiental learning activities.

An indispensible & seminal text for experiential educators!
This book looms as large on my experiential education bookshelf as David Kolb's seminal ur-text, "Experiential Learning." But whereas the latter has a more theoretical bent, Luckner & Nadler's work here is eminently practical, as well. "Processing..." is rife with pedagogical nuggets that are immediately applicable to all sorts of experiential learning contexts. Moreover, it's a very user-friendly work. No experiential educator worth his or her salt should be without this absolutely indispensible volume.

Learned it as a Student - Live with it now
I was introduced to this book in my Outoor Leadership Training classat Houghton College and I was so impressed and impacted by it I laterwrote a manual for the camp I worked for using this book as one of the primary sources.

Whatever you are doing this will help you make an impact and teach you a great deal about learning with people. It has greatly improved my leadership skills in my outdoor education positions. This book enlightens so many of the fuzzy areas of group procesing and managing a group or person for growth experiences. Its division and explanation of the edge experience is priceless. END

Security Transformation: Digital Defense Strategies to Protect your Company's Reputation and Market Share

A good managerial overview
Security Transformation is an excellent book for a manager, "C" officer or other less technical readers. The authors take care to present the issues of digital security in an easy to read, non-jargon laden manner. And for the jargon that is put in the book, there is a glossary at the end to help keep everyone on the same page. This is the book you hand on to executives who just don't understand why security is important. It looks at the effect technology security has upon the ability to secure business and the ability to not be part of a larger problem, such as a Distributed Denial of Service attack. The warnings are real, but are not played for sensationalism, cooly explaining what threats are out there and what they mean to "you." I don't think I learned much I hadn't known already, but I did find a nice coherent package to introduce others to the risks, with significantly less amounts of techno-jargon or offputting technical details. A quick read and a good overview.

Highly Recommended!
Mary Pat McCarthy and Stuart Campbell provide just enough technical information to help you understand the electronic security risks your company faces without falling into a complete course in computer programming and Internet data transmission. The authors' most valuable contribution is their structured plan for evaluating your computer system's security and creating security architecture. We [...] direct those who want a more advanced treatment of computer security issues to the book's two appendices, which review some of the same ground in more detail. This book is an important read for CEOs and an essential resource for anyone responsible for corporate security or risk management.

Snappy, thoughtful and useful
When I read the first chapter, I thought I had picked up a Clancy novel by mistake. The first section says "Are you scared yet?" You better believe it. The good news, though, is you can do something about it, and this book helps you make informed decisions about what to do. Definitely worth the price and more.

Good, but something missing
I think these Sadler books are good but a bit overrated. None of the three are complete: all of them have significant omissions in terms of the scope of coverage. And the "question and answer" format is a great idea, but it doesn't really work very well. Too often, the questions aren't even questions, but just exclamations such as "Oh Dear!" by an imaginary befuddled reader. His answers have a slick smoothness that sometimes do not really answer the questions. One gets the feeling that these books were turned out quickly. They're not really for beginners, but they are not thorough enough to be stand alone treatises on their respective openings. In the end, they succeed mostly as annotated games collections.

Didn't even need to read it!??
Having studied the two other books of M.Sadler, just a fast look in this one and seeing the same structure convinced me that it is of the same quality than the others. I mean great learning quality.

Excellent book, though incomplete
Matthew Sadler does an excellent job of covering the material he covers in his books, and this one is no different. He does a lot of his explaining in a sort of "Question and Answer", or "Frequently Asked Questions" format, which appears to be unique to him (I have yet to see another author use this format). There is a massive amount of material that is squeezed into this 160-page book, including 128 annotated games.

The one downfall to this book is that it leaves out a few of the most critical lines in all of the Semi-Slav. An example here would be the 18...d4 line in the Main Line of the Botvinnik Variation with 17...a3. This is a line that was seen in 1994 (about 4 years before the writing of the book). It is an interesting and sharp line that leads to a Rook Sacrifice on move 22 (22...Rh5, which is the ONLY MOVE), the sacrifice of yet another rook, and eventually a position considered roughly equal after going through a sequence of moves where White is up 2 rooks, but Black has pawns on b4, b2, and c3.

Another loop-hole is the lacking of Black's options other than 6...Bd6 in the 6.Qc2 lines of the 5.e3 Semi-Slav. An important alternative for Black would be 6...b6, for example.

If there was such a rating as "4 and a half stars", that's what I'd give this book, but I had to round it off to 5. 4 would be a bit too harsh. However, while I would highly recommend reading this book, I would also recommend "The Botvinnik Semi-Slav" and "The Meran System", both by Steffen Pederson, as these appear to be more complete in coverage, though also deeper into the theory, and hence I would recommend reading Sadler's book first before trying dive into the others.

A MUST READ for "First-Time" Semi-Slav Players!!!

Important read.
This book was much more down-to-earth and easy to grasp than I thought it would be considering the subject matter. I do not think you will regret buying this book. It has opened my eyes to many things in my life and the lives of those around me. It is also very practical as Dr. Malone tells you how to apply the principles... not just "know" them.
