A Grateful Mental Health Counselor...
This book is an absolute must for parents AND teachers who want to guide children through the mastering of essential social skills for building friendships. The all inclusive presentation of means and methods for knowing and implementing The Unwritten Rules will spare many children from the pain of unknowingly inviting social rejection. It's all within The Unwritten Rules...clearly visible to the mind and heart. The authors admirably and impressively answer many children's calls for help.

A Concerned Mother
The Unwritten Rules offers sound advice as well as easy to understand methods for parents to use in guiding their children through the quagmire of social situations. I highly recommend this book for any parent concerned with existing or potential social difficulties.

Mother of a shy child loved this book!
I have watched my child suffer from shyness. This book made me realize that there are some specific skills that she could learn that would help her feel more confident and be more successful in social situations. Instead of saying to her, "Of course they will want to play with you, you're such a great kid," I now give her specific tips, like: "Smile and say hello and say the person's name when you see them" or "If all the kids are playing tag, just join the game, instead of waiting for them to ask you to join." I am so glad that I found this book while she is in early elementary school so we can work on the skills together and avoid some unhappiness down the road. This book offers very practical advice that will help parents guide their children to learn "friendship skills". What greater gift can we give our children? I found Unwritten Rules to be very compassionate towards all kinds of children. I gave a copy of it to my friend who was at her wit's end with her child who has been taking on the role of bully of the playground. She found it helpful too!

great book
this is a great book, the author truly knows the subject matter well. I recommend this to anyone interested in getting the most out of walking for fitness.

An Inspirtational & Practical Guide to Fitness & Longevity
The Way of Walking is both an inspiratual and a practical guide to physical fitness and longevity. The book articulates the mind/body connection to health and well-being in a way that really motivates me to be serious about this walking program. The information is easy to relate to and absorb. In fact, reading this book is almost like having Dr. Moramarco there with you, helping you to get it right. The demonstration photos are also quite helpful. The Way of Walking describes a system that can work for the novice to the most fit and everyone in between (like me!). You don't need special clothes or equipment. You are not limited by age or physical condition. Having followed this program for just a few months, I feel better than I have in a long time: my legs are stronger, my endurance greater and I'm more optimistic. I'm grateful to Dr. Moramarco for sharing his knowledge and insight in The Way of Walking. I feel this system will be the backbone of my own life-long physical fitness program.

Best book on the best exercise!
This is definately the best book on the subject of walking. Author MoraMarco explains a simple strategy for maintaining health and gives several examples of various styles of walking. Also included are sample programs and resources to look up. I often stress to my patients that walking 20 minutes a day is the best exercise. It circulates the blood, helps burn calories, and can help keep you young. Buy the book as a gift for a loved one. It will definately let them know you care!

Good Question!
My friends all laughed when I told them the title of this book that I'm so enthusiastic about. And we know they are laughing because everyone who has ever been married has asked the same darn question: "why did I marry you anyway?"

This book did have me laughing, for sure (the author's husband is a hoot). But don't let the witty title fool you: this author knows what she is talking about. This is not pop psychology! Bartlein backs up her material with experience as a therapist, and gives tons of case studies, self-quizzes, intriguing quotes, practical tips and usable solutions to help people overcome the dangerous patterns and bad habits (MythInformation) that can wreck a relationship.

"Why Did I Marry You Anyway?" is eye-opening and a very fun read (this is not another one of those relationship books that gathers dust on your bedside table).

If you are married now, or plan to be married someday, this is a must-read!

Great Information For All Relationships
Excellent information relative to marriage, of course, but this book is also a self-help tool applicable to other relationships as well. I recommend this book as a gift item for anyone who is married or about to be married. As I read it, I was able to put the strategies Barb outlines to use immediately. Entertaining and easy-to-read, I highly recommend purchasing this book for yourself and others on your gift list.

Wisdom and Humor
Barbara Bartlein explains in an entertaining and humorous manner the secrets to a happy marriage. Her advice is simple and easy to understand, but she captures the essence of what makes a relationship work, as well as what makes it emotionally satisfying. And best of all, this book is fun to read, with lots of laughter and anecdotes you'll want to share. Highly recommended.

Great book on positional chess
Covers the isolated pawn formation that occurs in several openings such as the caro kan panov, the tarrasch defense to the queens gambit, the nimzo indian defense and the french tarrasch. Covers pros and cons of Isolated Pawns. The major themes related to the isolated pawn, look inside the book to find out the themes. Great bit of analysis. The author goes the extra mile to make the rank amateur understand the concepts. The book is in 3 parts. The first part covering the isolated pawn formations and attacking patterns. Second part covering various endgames that occur from the isolated pawn formation. and the third being covering other pawn formations that the isolated pawn formation can change into. All chapters are good. I really liked the first part where he discusses the various positional strategies for the owner of the isolated pawn and the attacking themes involved followed by serveral illustrated games with good analysis. Also liked the part about how to combat the isolated pawn.
I would recommend this book to anyone who plays the queens gambit, nimzo indian defense, caro kan panov attack, english or french tarrasch, as the isolated pawn formation occurs in these openings. Great book teaching positional strategies. Can't wait for more good books from the same author.

A very special book
This is one of those rare books that changed the way I looked at chess. What the other reviewers say is true. This is a great book!

The Manual on "How To Win Isolated-QP Positions."
This is easily one of the best and most carefully crafted books written in the last 50-100 years on the subject. It is easily THE book on isolated QP formations.

Before I go any further, you should know I am a LIFE - Master at chess, and that I teach chess to make a large part of my living.

How I got this book is a little story in itself. It was a gift from my good friend Sig, who is a bookseller from Tallahassee. He gave it to me as a gift, and it is even personally autographed by the author. At first I just glanced at it, and threw it down in my "books to read" pile.

Then one day, (a couple of months later); I just happened to pick it up and start reading. I was immediately and totally engrossed. I worked my way through like the first 3 chapters before I could even put it down.

I eventually went through the entire book. I was already familiar with many of the games in this book, but I found the analysis to be new, refreshing, and informative. The author even found many new ideas that I was not familiar with or had not seen before. (For example, see the analysis of the classic game: Boleslavsky - Kotov; Zurich Candidates Tournament, 1953 ... on page 15 of the book.)

A common assumption is that only players who play the Queen-Pawn Openings need to study this book, as the positions with the IQP only result from these types of openings. Nothing could be further from the truth. A position containing an Isolated QP is the natural result of dozens of different opening variations. For example, an IQP could result from any of the following variations: The Queen's Gambit, (Accepted & Declined); Tarrasch Defense, (to the Queen's Gambit); Reti Opening. The IQP also can arise from a French Defense, and is the natural result of many variations of the Panov-Botvinnik Variation of the Caro-Kann Defense. I could go on and give you a dozen more examples, but by now you should realize that either White or Black can get an IQP, and these formations can result from almost any opening.

This book was a major revelation to me. Having grown up under the influence of Nimzovich, I had mostly assumed that the positions containing an Isolated Queen's-Pawn, like any isolated pawn; was weak and should be avoided at all costs. (I almost never allowed myself to be saddled with an IQP, mostly as a result of what I had learned from Nimzowitsch's "My System.") This is a fallacy. For instance, take the 1974 Karpov-Korchnoi Candidates Match played in Moscow. (This match was won by Karpov by the slimmest of margins - 3 wins to 2, and was the de facto World Championship Match . . . since Fischer did not play in 1975.); Black seven times allowed himself to be given an Isolated Queen's Pawn, always equalized and never lost.

This book shows ALL the "do's and the don'ts" of this type of structure. The author has carefully and meticulously laid down virtually every aspect of the positions that contain an isolated Queen's Pawn.

The book is laid out in many chapters in three main parts. Part One discusses the advantages of the IQP. For instance, in Chapter 1 the author examines the energetic freeing advance d4-d5. In Chapter 2, we see the repeated motif of a sudden and unexpected attack on the f2 or f7-squares. In Chapter 3, we see the oft-repeated tactic of a Rook luft on the King-side. And on it goes. Seven chapters in the first part of the book, all focusing on ideas that appear constantly and repetitively in positions with an Isolated QP. In Part Two, (which is dedicated to the disadvantages of the IQP); Chapter 8; the author examines the strengths AND weaknesses of the isolani in every type of endgame that could have arisen from these types of positions, or has arisen in praxis. In Chapter 9, the author poignantly demonstrates when and where the IQP becomes weak in the average middle-game position. In Chapter 10, he shows the best methods for dealing with the Isolated QP. The Third Part of this book discusses all aspects of associated pawn structures. The author shows what types of positions can lead to an IQP, and when you should embrace them and when you should avoid them.

There are many other facets of this book that I find outstanding. The author uses many, many complete and well-annotated games to make his point. (It has always been my belief and teaching that whole games are the best vehicle to really learn the game of chess.) There are exercises at the end of each of the three sections of this book, for you to test and hone your new skills and knowledge. There are also many areas where the author will stop and elaborate ALL the ideas of a given position, so one cannot help but to learn (and be entertained) by such a narrative. All-in-all, I find this to be an above average chess book. I found almost no flaws in this book, and I found much information that even a Master of the game (like myself!) could learn and profit from!

This book receives my highest recommendation and praise. One can only hope this is the first book in a series on certain pawn patterns, and the author will continue (in the future) to educate us in the correct play of pawn structure and the proper way to play various pawn formations.

If you are trying to better learn and understand pawn structure, I can also recommend several other books, in the following order: #1.) "My System," by Nimzovich; #2.) "Pawn Structure Chess," by Andy Soltis; and #3.) "Pawn Power In Chess," by Hans Kmoch.

One other tip?....

If you are trying to learn - or master pawn play … THEN GET THIS BOOK!!!

(Warning: If you are a raw beginner, then this book may not help you much and would be something of a difficult read. Read my profile, and see my website - for a complete training plan … and what books to read ... for any level player.)

A complete Guide to Wireless
In just a few years the Internet has revolutionized the way we do business. Email, online shopping and digital music downloaded from the Internet are now integral parts of our everyday lives. Technology aware companies have now turned to wireless web for the next big leap in commerce and communication. The race is on for deploying cutting-edge wireless technology.

As a business and technology consultant I am often asked by clients to provide some guidelines on how to proceed in this new and fast moving industry. Is trading stocks using a wireless PDA really a secure transaction and are electronic coupons delivered to customers via cell phones a technical feasible marketing solution? What communications provider should I use when connecting my sales force via WAP based browsers to a wireless CRM solution? And should we look to Europe and Japan for the future in wireless communication, or will it turn out to be another bursting bubble as we have experienced with too many dot.com business ventures?

"The Wireless Web", unlike so many other books covering technology topics, provides an easy to read and well-structured roadmap on how to develop a winning wireless strategy. Bergeron starts off explaining the history of this industry and it's economic drivers and then provides an overview of the current state of technologies, the various systems, protocols and technical standards used in the US and compares them to the more cohesive and further developed Japanese and European technologies. The latter part of the book focuses on the future, introducing the reader to opportunities and potential risks wireless technologies will offer as well as technical and political limitations it will face as this technology matures He closes with a well structured guideline on how to develop a wireless strategy of any scale.

In summary, this book will familiarize the reader with this new and dynamic industry and provide the knowledge required to develop, communicate, and execute a successful wireless strategy. Although written for the non-technical executive, I recommend this book to every one confronted with wireless technologies, the corporate executive implementing a wireless enterprise information portal as well as the cell phone user confronted with evaluating roaming charges, communication protocols and coverage areas when selecting a calling plan. This book definitely deserves a place on the bookshelf of any technologist.

Wireless Pitfalls
Wireless Web is a refreshing kind of book. I'm tired of books that introuduce a new technology, paint a rosy picture, and then leave the reader dangling three months later. This isn't one of those books. It tells it like it is. Wireless isn't easy. In fact, implementing a Wireless Web solution is nearly at the bleeding edge of what's possible, as the author states. There are traps at every corner, and you'd better know what to expect. In this respect, the Wireless Web provides a map of the "speed bumps" along the way. If you're going to give it a go on the Wireless Web, you'd better have this book or some other roadmap with you.

Wireless More than Just the Web
A good read. The title is a little misleading, however, because the book also covers wireless without the Web. In other words, peer to peer networks inside buildings, outside buildings, and to the home seem like the most promising aspects of the wireless revolution, as described in this book. As the author states, it's simply a matter of time, not if, wireless will touch every aspect of our lives.

Excellent Book
The author provides a series of simple, powerful ideas that will be of great value to investors that are saving for retirement.

His writing style is easy to read, the concepts covered are easy to follow and apply, and best of all, he provides specific advice on the investment strategies that you need to follow to succeed in today's stock market.

Buy the book. It will be the best $20 you have spent in a long time.

Saved Me Money !
I've read many books on investing in the last few years. Most of the books I have read (Suze Orman, Charles Schwab, Johanthon Pond etc.) provided good information -but lacked specific actionable steps that I could use and apply right away.

Scott Magnacca's book is straightforward and gave me a lot of common sense- but not obvious- tips and ideas that I have been able to quickly use and apply to more effectively manage my portfolio and save money.

I highly reccomend it. If your planning for a "Successful Retirement" this should be required reading.

Well worth my time
Anyone who owns a mutual fund or who is saving for a successful retirement should read this book.

The book was an easy read and shared a variety of 'real world' examples and case studies on how to apply each of the 7 strategies.

Unlike most financial books, this book wasn't filled with numbers and formulas. Just good, practical and easy to use advice.

I especially enjoyed the chapters on "tax-efficient investing" and how to evaluate and pick a financial advisor.

Scorching your enemy
The Sicilian Dragon is an exciting opening to play as black but dangerous too. This is an excellent book for those who love to play the Dragon. Dragon players should add this one to their opening collections. It contains some tactical themes too. Shows how to play against whites setups, including the Maroczy Bind. Very solid and theoretical. Advanced players will find this one useful too.

Solid, down to earth
I am one of those people who doesn't play the Sicilian often, because of how sharp and bookish it can be. In particular, the Sicilian Dragon is something I play only in the least important blitz games, as there are so many variations, and one's king gets stormed so darn often. From hard experience, I'd known that the Yugoslav variation stuff doesn't work against the accelerated dragon, but I'd never known the move sequences nor how to deal with all those c4 Maroczy Bind situations. This book capably tells you how to play the Accelerated, how to turn back white's efforts to try the Yugoslav Attack, and how to deal with the bind. It has a nice chapter on the Hyper Accelerated, and a mildly throwaway chapter on the Semi Accelerated system with ...Nc6 and ....g6. This is a good book, easily understandable by a B player like myself. Well done.

What I needed
I bought this book a week ago. Although I haven't had time to study it all in depth, I already like it more than my other opening books. I already played the accelerated Dragon, without knowing a lot of theory.

Many Whites play some sort of move order to reach the Yugoslav variation of the Dragon. That's not possible against the Accelerated, since Black can play ...d5!. But there are many tactical points in those lines to make Black equalize or win a pawn right away, and I always missed them. This book will allow me to punish mistakes every White seems to make, and I like that most :).

Furthermore, this is an opening book with quite a lot of text. It starts out with an overview of typical plans for both sides, and in the analysis chapters, many moves are accompanied with a small line saying what the idea is. I know I played many moves from other books not knowing why...

And it is complete. Aside from the main Accelerated e4 c5 Nf3 Nc6 d4 cxd4 Nxd4 g6, it also covers lines like the hyper-accelerated (e4 c5 Nf3 g6) which I sometimes like to play to avoid 3.Bb5, in 23 pages!, and things like the dubious e4 c5 Nf3 Nc6 d4 cxd4 Nxd4 Nf6 Nc3 g6.

The authors are absolute Accelerated enthusiasts so maybe there is a small Black bias, but I think most people who want to buy this book play it as Black anyway. The opening is completely playable.

it would be a greater help!!

A fun time waster
I love playing simulation games. This is one of my favorites when I don't want any war, just a lot of sandbox activity. The graphics are a little rough, but it looks good on the screen of my tiny laptop.

Great Book!
Definately worth the money spent. There is a lot of useful information. However, Sybex needs to hurry and give us strategy guides for the expansion packs!

Zoom: How 12 Exceptional Companies Are Navigating the Road to the Next Economy

Businesspeople are always looking for strategies to improve their companies. James M. Citrin's Zoom serves up a fine compendium of them, distilling lessons learned from 12 leading firms into a half-dozen "success factors" whose nuances are illustrated by case studies of the spotlighted enterprises. Citrin, a Spencer Stuart managing director who specializes in CEO searches, mixes "enduring leadership principles with e-commerce management strategies" in plotting a map to follow as one negotiates the ever-changing road to the New Economy. His resultant themes are Go for Speed; Create a Learning Organization; Obsess the Customer; Reward (Appropriate) Risk-Taking and Failure; Absorb Uncertainty; and Master Deal-Making and Partnering Skills, illuminated by examinations of such firms as Akamai Technologies, The Motley Fool, Wal-Mart.com, Yahoo! and Cisco Systems. Some of the ideas have certainly been expressed elsewhere previously, and not all of the corporate models look as good in hindsight as they may have initially, but the specifics and the directions offered are nonetheless potentially valuable to anyone searching for possible routes past today's increasingly mixed signals. A final section called "Execute" and a series of implementation tips for each of the six guideposts solidly move the ideas from abstractions to possibilities. --Howard Rothman

Tons of useful stuff for real business people
Not too trendy, not too trite--just right, which is unusual in business books. Yeah, lots of companies have flamed out, and values are way down, and there's this Enron thing. But the Internet is still changing, if not everything, a lot of things. And perspicacious executives will be looking for ideas about how to stay ahead, because it isn't getting any easier or any less competitive. Citrin's book offers a lot of real, practical insight gleaned from an assortment of businesses that, whatever the stock price says this week, seem pretty likely to survive and prosper.

Insightful, Prescriptive, and Enjoyable
For those looking for a roadmap for sucessful businesses, Zoom is the book for you. With Zoom, Jim Citrin insightfully reveals the important success factors for successful businesses, and how companies have deployed them. The lessons of Zoom are not time dependent; they transcend business and technology eras. Zoom could also serve as an important aid for companies that have become derailed and provide a roadmap to get them back on the success road. I thought Zoom was excellent - insightful, actionable, and enjoyable.

Highly Recommended!
James M. Citrin draws his new business wisdom from detailed studies of 12 successful start-ups and blue chips. Identifying the common threads in these two groups, he comes to a simple conclusion: To win in the modern marketplace, companies must combine traditional management techniques with cutting-edge methods and technology. Even if some the conclusions presented here fail to surpass the obvious, we from getAbstract recommend this book for its cross-section of best practices, old and new.
