Make Peace with Anyone : Breakthrough Strategies to Quickly End Any Conflict, Feud, or Estrangement
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (12 January, 2002)
Author: David J. Lieberman
Amazon base price: $4.99
List price: $19.95 (that's 75% off!)
Behaviorist David Lieberman thinks all conflicts have something in common. Whether you're dealing with the complaining customer, the coworker with charisma bypass surgery, or the fallout from forgetting a friend's birthday, the resolution lies in understanding what he calls the "conflict recipe." The ingredients of all conflicts are fear and perceived loss of respect, says Lieberman. When people and events don't respond as we planned, we fear a loss of control. We compensate and translate this fear--and the lowered sense of esteem it brings--into anger. Ergo, conflict resolution is accomplished by offering the injured party the ingredients for restoring self-regard and a sense of control.

Based on this recipe, Lieberman creates dozens of step-by-step scenarios for resolving conflicts of every shape, including family money feuds, contretemps with friends, personality clashes, passive-aggressive coworkers, and differences in values. Other particularly strong chapters direct readers to seek forgiveness for their own behavior and provide emergency techniques for standoffs and longtime estrangement. Lieberman explains his basic theory with clarity, and illustrates its practice with smart strategies and chapter summaries. This practicality and consistency allow Make Peace with Anyone to deliver on the title's promise. --Barbara Mackoff

A Groundbreaking Work
One of my favorite writers on human behavior, David Lieberman, shares his insight and understanding of conflict in this powerful work. He proposes that conflicts generally follow a basic recipe. The ingredients in the recipe are fear and a perceived loss of respect. If people don't act or react the way we expect then we fear a loss of control. When we fear a loss of control or perceive that there has been a loss of respect then our self-esteem is injured and we follow our first reaction to a loss of self-esteem, we fight back by turning it into anger. If this is the source of the emotional factor in conflict then the solution is to provide the other party with the ability to regain self-respect and at least some sense of control.

How to give this sense of control and self-esteem back to the other party is the focus of the book. Lieberman takes you step by step through many scenarios so that you can learn how to adapt to a situation and proactively make peace with anyone. Whether it is dealing with a long-standing conflict or stopping a problem before it gets out of hand, the book is filled with useful and practical techniques that are sure to dramatically change your relationships with others for the better. A highly recommended read.

A must read
He hits the right note with this one. It easy to relate to and includes scripts to illustrate. His conversational style is just right. I used the method a few times myself and it does get me better responses. I highly recommend this book to anyone, not just those in need to resolve conflicts. The book isn't written to help you solve conflicts, instead it helps you keep a cool head and word your words better. Keep it as a reference in your house or office and look it up whenever you need it. Or pass it on to a friend, you'll be glad you did, when confrontation arises.

A Must Get Book!
Wow! This author really knows how to get to the heart of many situations. I think the content delivers the title. I especially love how Lieberman's examples brought me closer to results. I used this book at work several times and liked the ease of applying the techniques. Well done!

Mastering Strategy an Answer to Textbook Selection Problem
After using a typical, traditional text for my grad class in Management and Strategy, I discovered Managing Strategy in Amazon. The book was an immediate hit with my students because of the way it distills concepts of strategy as presented in the typical textbook and relates them to the real world of organizations in a practical and readable fashion. I would highly recommend this work to students, faculty, and managers alike. The price is unbeatable and the buyer will have a source which can be used continually in the workplace. Perhaps this books sets a precedent for texts (although it is not the usual text) in other related fields. I would like to see such a format for organizational behavior and for leadership as well.

Strategic Process that Works
Mastering Strategy by Rigsby and Greco is a truly exceptional piece, which nicely blends academic thought with actionable lessons. The authors manage to superbly tie in insights from some of the world's greatest leaders and make it relevant to any industry or discipline. By managing to coalesce theories and strategies of the finest minds, they proffer forth an Organization Dynamic Model that organizes diverse and specialized disciplines into a workable and understandable framework. Read it, understand it, and most importantly, learn from it. A definite must read for anyone even cursorily involved in strategy formulation or strategic execution.

Great strategy model
This book does a great job of synthesizing the current state of business strategy thinking and introducing a model for practical application. I am using it in my business and having great success.

Best beginning instruction
If you want to learn how to play chess, this is the way. The first book of the series, Play Winning Chess, describes the moves, rules, and terminology. While many people claim to know how to move the pieces, do they really know what a fianchetto is? How about en passant? Or what does o-o-o mean?
The second book of the series, Winning Chess Strategies, describes how to best deploy your pieces. What are good and bad bishops? How can a knight be defeated? What to do with the rooks?
The last book of this series, Winning Chess Tactics, illustrates the heart and soul of chess, beneficial exchanges. It gives you some basic fundamentals such as x-rays, skewers, and pins.
These books are easily readable and have many diagrams and explanations. Thinking about starting to learn about chess? Start here.

Best Series of Chess Books you can buy
If you are a beginner or rated slightly higher, this is the best one series of books you can study. There are actually six in this series and you would be wise to study them all. My rating jumped 200 points after I read only three books in the series! I still have three books left to study! Yasser Seirawan has demonstrated through this series and his other books how well he writes as well as plays chess. There are only about thirty or forty GREAT chess instructional books in print, this is a great place to start quality chess study.

Microsoft Chess with Coupons
THis set is amazing. As a gift or for yourself, you can't go wrong purchasing these 3 books from Yasser Seirawan. I purchased mine here at Amazon "used" from HPCB-Online. The books were in mint condition packaged with care and they arrived in record time! I was surprised to find them because they are now out-of-print and are becoming hard to find. If you or someone you love is into chess, then make sure you don't let this set pass you by! Cheers!

Amazing Language Arts Strategies Every Teacher Should Know
Sharon Taberski really offers practical, useful, and inspriring information that all teachers need. If you are a new teacher she will provide useful ideas that can be used in all primary classrooms. If you are a seasoned teacher, she will re-energize you and provide new techniques to make teaching reading more interesting. Plus I love the fact that she stresses reading expository texts, this is truly essential in todays NCLB environment where standardized testing emphasizes expository texts. Sharon also does amazing things with her folders, you have to read it in order to truly appreciate it. I almost forgot to mention the reproducibles, even if you don't read the book, buy it for the reproducibles and the folder organizing ideas.

A Must Read for Teachers in Grades k-3
I have used the theories and practices from this book more than any other professional book I've read. I'm reading it now for the third time. Sharon Taberski's style of teaching is how I aspire to teach. Each time I reread a part of this book and apply something new, I get a little closer. I would recommend this book to new and experienced teachers!

The Best Professional Book I' ve Ever Read about the Process
I have read dozens of professional books, but the difference between Sharon's and the others was that I came back to hers three times. And even though I've been teaching over a dozen years, Sharon has helped to clarify even further the hows and whys of helping all kinds of learners to read and write. She certainly comes across as a very hard working, skilled and successful individual. And yet, as mentioned in the forward by her own principal, Sharon makes the whole process seem really simple. I can't wait to get back to work and adapt some of her ideas to my own as she herself encourages the reader to do. I'm so glad I found this one, and I'm sure you will be too!

Will Be A Classic
Over the years, the Peppers and Rogers duo have made an outstanding contribution to the field of marketing and the process of developing relationships with customers. "One to One B2B" is yet another installment. This well-written book builds on their earlier works and does a great deal to define in a tangible fashion the new "customer relationship mentality" that is so essential for all organizations to consider in today's real economy. This book is thought-provoking and stimulating. It is evident that the authors who have pioneered the bulk of the original thinking underlying customer relationship management want to share their compelling philosophy. They are very convincing in citing numerous advantages that accrue to those who embrace their way of operating a business. And, this book seems to be committed to showing a straightforward, direct blueprint for implementation. The initial chapters of the book provide an updated version of the principles and philsophy found in their earlier works. These early chapters constitute a worthwhile review, but the also offer some different slants that are extremely valuable supplements. The later chapters are integral to the book's mission. The authors offer very detailed coverage of companies and organizations that have adopted the "one to one" way of doing business. The book provides detailed description in a case study format illustrating the steps of implementation and explaining the benefits associated with each implementation phase. In keeping with their well-established literary character, in the final section of their book Peppers and Rogers have an eye to the future they share with the reader. For example, they don't shy away from offering advice to Dell on future direction in light of the challenges posed by the current environment. And, they take time to weigh the eventual impact of a B2B world that is rapidly extending its scope, offering conjecture from their very informed perspectives. As an academician who has spent significant time studying the CRM movement and consulting with companies that embrace the same, this book definitely offers value and is a must read for anyone that is committed to preserving lasting customer relationships.

So Obvious and Yet So Under-Appreciated
Those who have already read any of Peppers and Rogers' previous books (The One to One Future, Enterprise One to One, The One to One Fieldbook with Bob Dorf, and The One to One Manager) no doubt share my high regard for their uniquely creative as well as highly analytical thinking about CRM within the global marketplace. They continue to draw upon an abundance of real-world experience. This book may well be their most important thus far. In it, they suggest and then explain a number of strategies to create and then sustain solid relationships with B2B customers. Even if your organization is not currently involved in such relationships, these same strategies can also be of substantial value. Once again, the authors' essential idea (hardly original, they realize) is that businesses as well as most other human communities (e.g. a political constituency, a religious following, a military force) share at least this in common: Each is built one believer at a time to serve mutual self-interests. In this sense, the term "B2B" is a misnomer because people do business with other people. (Rest assured, I fully understand the differences between and among B2B, B2C, and B2B2C.) Even when purchases are completed electronically, they are initiated and fulfilled by people. Goods are manufactured by people. Services are provided by people. And so forth.

Over the years, when customers have been asked to cross-rank attributes of greatest importance to them, "Feeling Appreciated" and "Convenience" or "Ease of Doing Business" are either #1 or #2. (Remarkably, "Price" is usually ranked between 9th and 14th in order of importance.) It is also worth noting that, as Peppers and Rogers carefully explain in this book, as new efficiencies are created by breakthrough technologies, the quality of one-to-one human interaction becomes even more important. They include five case studies, including one which examines the policies and procedures of Dell Computer. Somehow, they gained access to information which is probably otherwise unavailable, except to those involved in the Dell organization. Each of the case studies reads as if it were a one-act play. However different their "characters" and "plot" may be, all five companies are literally customer-driven. Their ultimate objective is not to achieve "customer satisfaction"; rather, as Jeffrey Gitomer and others have insisted, their ultimate objective is sustainable "customer loyalty" (indeed "customer passion"). Peppers and Rogers provide a cohesive, comprehensive, and cost-effective system to achieve that objective. They would be the first to recommend that each reader make appropriate modifications of that system to accommodate the specific CRM needs, interests, and resources of her or his own organization.

Earlier, I suggested that this may well be the most important book Peppers and Rogers have written thus far. The system they provide in it is worthless, however, unless and until an organization involved in B2B is wholly committed (top to bottom) to doing everything possible to make each customer feel appreciated. One of the best strategies to accomplish that is to make doing business with it as convenient (as "easy") as possible.

Here's another key point. Based on my own extensive experience working closely with all manner of organizations, I have become convinced that organizations cannot be "customer-driven" unless they are first "employee/associate-driven." Those who feel mistreated cannot be expected to treat others well. Therefore, effective CRM depends almost entirely on the quality of relationships within a given organization...and each of them is also, inevitably, one-to-one.

Excellent
After reading many books about CRM/Marketing One-One, my opinion is this book has to be read as soon as possible. You might have read others like me but this one is a plus. Buy it, read it, apply it, let it pass 6 months, then read it again. Finally, post here how much it helped you. It includes pratical stuff (case studies) of leading companies (Dell, Convergys, etc). This book has to be seen as a complement to others previously written by same authors.

Good but limited in scope
This is a small (33 page) ring bound book. It briefly touches on a number of circumstances (common one for children)that might benefit from visual communication offerings. The latter can be diagrams, drawings, or pictures that help the child manage their daily schedule. The idea is that the visual 'artwork' represents the rules for a particular set of circumstances. A wide variety of formats are mentioned and there are abundant pictures which may stir and inspire parents. For most readers that will be enough to justify purchasing the book.

My main reservations about the book are that the outlined methodology is so broad as to make it impossible to separate effective from less effective representational modes. The test-retest reliability question, hanging over all these type of intervention programmes, is never addressed. For instance the authors never explore the results of the use of the Picture Exchange Communication System. On a related point, the authors don't connect their strategies with general speech and language therapy approaches. These are moot points but ones that have to be acknowledged as autism intervention programmes try to formalise their methodologies.

I really enjoyed this easy to read book!
This wonderful book is jam-packed with ideas. It complements the video on visuals by Jennifer Savner. Together (or separately) they are winners!

A great video!
This video shows how visuals can work with children. I learned more in 20 minutes watching this video than I did in trying reading a thick book!

Some of the best companies in the world are flourishing by dramatically revising their management practices, according to Dartmouth College teacher William F. Joyce. In MegaChange, Joyce looks at how Lucent Technologies, CitiGroup, Price Waterhouse, and other top businesses are instituting nontraditional management techniques.

Joyce believes that global competition, rapid advances in technology, and new workplace values are necessitating profound changes in the way organizations manage their workforces. He argues that successful managers recognize that people today are demanding job satisfaction, which is a vastly different situation from 20 years ago, when surveys found that 95 percent of workers didn't expect to be satisfied with their work. "We must be competitive, but we must do it in a way that recognizes the desire--perhaps the demand--for meaningful and valuable work, the recognition of family and personal satisfaction." Joyce calls for igniting change in four ways: empowering the workforce, improving policies, creating organizations that engage people, and sharpening strategy. MegaChange is for managers searching for innovative ways to save their organizations from stifling bureaucracies and engage their employees in a culture that is both productive and significant. --Dan Ring

Change Handbook
This is a very well laid out book with a very logical sequence. One gets the feeling that the author has lots of experience with change initiatives and addresses a lot of the micro issues that come about in change. The only issue i feel was not addressed or stressed upon was the speed to change and its importance given the nature of the external environment today. I would also be pleased to see the linkage between the change effort and its value in terms of financial markets. Overall it is a wonderful read and to the amateur change agent its a great way to hone skills.

A very good book indeed
I'm not given to writing book reviews, but I do want to put in my two cents' worth here and say that I fully agree with all the other reviews here. This is a very good book indeed. It should be read by more people.

very use indeed
I just want to say a few words in praise of this practical title. This is a concise and useful primer, and it is one of the most useful business books I have read for quite some time. I highly recommend it to all of you who may be in need of management guidance and new thinking on the structure and function of the corporation.

Nonlethal Weapons : War without Death

Author: David A. Morehouse

A difficult concept to sell the current military leadership.
A great book, although technically out of my league. I did enjoy the philosophical approach to the establishment of current global military and indistrial conditions, as well as the fictional introduction of the non-lethal weapons into the battlefield. It was a difficult subject, but the author did a great job of writing it so that all of us could follow the logic and the dream. If you want the world to change its waring ways then this book is a grand start.

Quite costly, but a good book nonetheless
I actually enjoyed reading this book. The author gave several examples of less than lethal weaponry. I highly recommend this book.

Psychic Warrior is a 5* book so this book must be Great!
After reading Psychic Warrior I felt as if David Morehouse was more then just an author - it was if he was one/all of us (since that bullet could have hit anyone)- and now I'm wanting very much to read "Nonlethal Weapons" because I believe this author has been given quite a gift! Yet at this price very few will ever be able to read it - and if there's anyone out there reading this I need to find a used copy so I can be one of the lucky ones to view Morehouse's thoughts & feelings.

Overall, an intriguing and captivating book.
A perspective of WWII that I have never read before. Brings the day-to-day experience of the ordinary soldier into brutal reality. Wordy and rambling at times, but still a good book.

An Amazing Book !
On the Way, by Edward Marinello, is a fascinating eyewitness account of the American soldier on European battlefields during World War II. Through the eyes and ears of Edward Marinello, the reader witnesses the fears, challenges, and ingenuity of the men in Battery B. This should be required reading for all American history courses. On the Way gives a powerful insight to the human face of war. It is a reminder of how the courage, integrity, and tenacity of each soldier is crucial on the battlefield. This is a must read book!
