This book was fun. The illustrations are absolutely perfect and the vignettes are fun. This book would be worth purchasing just for the illustrations.

Delightful essays about food, wine and literature
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-01
Daniel Rogov presents mini-biographies of 69 famous people; the essays are devoted to some of their culinary interests: Louis de Bacameil, Esscoffier, Hemingway, Proust, Franz Sacher, Marquis de Sade, Suzette, and Zola, among others. Each entry is accompanied by a recipe either created by or named for the subject, and the illustrations by Yael Hershberg greatly enhance the prose.

Rogov writes: "It is true that without great chefs there would be no great dishes, but one has to bear in mind that such dedication to the preparation of fine food demands to be matched by equal dedication to its consumption and appreciation."

Many of the recipes are easy enough for this intermediate cook to handle, but the cost of the ingredients in some are too much to hazard. Nonetheless, "a gourmet knows one can extract as much pleasure from the reading of such a recipe as one could in dining upon the dish."

Rogov has been an Internet institution for several years; recently he moved his site to Robin Garr's WineLovers Page, with this introduction:

"Let us start of by saying that even though I taste more than 1,00 wines monthly and dine in restaurants anywhere from 6 - 10 times weekly, I am neither wealthy nor fat. Nor do I have a red, bulbous nose.

"The truth of the matter is that I enjoy wine and food so much that I consider it foolish to abuse either of them. Let us continue by admitting that for more years than I care to admit in public, my joint passions for wine and gastronomy (can they be separated?) have provided me with a very comfortable and pleasant way of making a living.

"Currently, for example, I am the wine and restaurant critic for the Israeli daily newspaper "HaAretz" and for the Israeli version of the "International Herald Tribune." I ... am the author of the annual Rogov's Guide to Israeli Wines, 2009 which is now going into its fifth edition. I also contribute annually to Tom Stevenson's Wine Report and am a consultant to Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book.

"As a young colleague once put it, I always travel first class, have no choice but to taste the world's best wines, dine in the world's best restaurants and stay in the world's best hotels. To add insult to injury, I am even paid for my efforts. I have other passions as well. Those, however, are best not discussed in public."

I've included one of Rogov's recent online essays on Giuseppe Tortoni in the first Comment; his publishers provide another from the book at the link in the Comment. If you enjoy food, wine and literature, you will find many delights in these pages.

This book is refreshingly creative. The story begs to be read aloud.
The illustrations are delightful and truly enrich the story line. It's like eating a banana split; it fills me with joy.

I love this well written, handsomly illustrated book for children of all ages. I have bought and given 25 away copies, so far, to friends, family and neighbors. I think it would make an excellent Christmas gift for anyone who has children, grandchildren, family, or neighbor children who's lives they would like to enrich. While it's funny, it also teaches about learning to get along with others, colors, shapes and differences in personality. Jean Green

This is one of my favorite children's books. It treats Sam's worries, typical of other children's worries (lost library books, monster under bed, stolen cookies, vampires, etc.) in a funny but understanding manner. And the illustrations of Sam and his companion in worry--his teddy bear--are simply precious.

Buy it now before it goes out of print.

One of my all-time favorite picture books.

This book is "The Secret"

Review Date: 2009-04-13
I was first exposed to this book while watching "The Secret" DVD. This is the book which is given to Rhonda Byrne at the very beginning with a note that says, "Mama, this will help."

Little did I know that this book IS the Secret. If you have seen that DVD, you will want to read this book, because this is where it all comes from.

I really enjoyed this book and found it very helpful to creating an abundance mindset. In short, I was able to get rid of my issues with money and allow it to come rolling into my life, faster and easier than before.

This is a really short book, which will not take you long to read. You could read it in one sitting, if you wanted to. The information inside packs a wallup though and will be something you will refer to again and again.

This is an amazing book, which will really help you, if you have an open mind and use its principles in your life.

This large print edition of The Science of Getting Rich will go a long way in helping those with visual impairments to finally get a glimpse of the secret behind The Secret. Hendey is the Michael Jordan of Sea Kayaking

I agree with the previous review. Rich Hendey has truly redefined the sport of sea kayaking while staying remarkably in tune with kayak novices. I once saw this guy execute a triple barrel roll in rough seas with 6 foot swells and he never lost his sunglasses! Word is that Hendey is contemplating a ride over Niagara Falls this summer (the first ever for a kayak). I don't know if that is true or not, but if there is one guy who could pull it off it is "Whammo" Hendey.

Also, Hendey will be inducted this fall into the Sea Kayaking Hall Of Fame in New Oxford, PA.

If you read just one book this year, let this be it. It's enough to make you want to quit your job, give up disco dancing for good and just paddle, baby.

Hendey is a kayaking god!!!

Anyone who knows anything about kayaking knows that Rich Hendey is the ultimate authority on the sport. I met Rich in 1986 in Gettysburg, PA. He helped me master the treacherous waters in and around the area. This is a guy who I have spent lots of one on one time with. He used to say to me, "Housely, there is only one way to kayak -- all the way!" This attitude permeates his writings on the sport.

For those who are unaware, Rich gained a fair amount of notoriety in the 1980's as club and party DJ under the name DJ Whammo. He soon chucked that lifestyle and got back to nature. I heartily endorse this book.

"Happiness is real, But you have to want it"

The Code to Happiness
What exactly is Happiness and how do we find it?
Is there a secret code? Or a book?
Last week I picked up Secrets from The Delphi Cafe -Unlocking the
code to Happiness
not knowing what to expect.
We got this book a while ago. Suzi read it first, then it
disappeared into that mysterious place that books go. You know, that
place where you can't find anything until you're not looking for it.
Anyway, I sat down at my usual reading time, 3 AM, and began a
wonderful little journey.
In short, the hero, Socrates Smith, embarks on a spiritual and
social journey to find out if there is really a secret code to
finding happiness.
Amid his very real human trials, he is guided by a mysterious
waitress, towards an array of helpful teachers. Each teacher/guide
has a precious piece of the puzzle to share.
For me, I think the main message from authors Bob Rich and Scott
Friedman is:
"Happiness is real, But you have to want it"
Maybe you also must choose to notice it.
This book about the importance of family, friends, health, humor and
passion, is a refreshing cool swim for the spirit.
Just like the waitress in the book, Bob and Scott have given us, in
a very accessible way, some good clues, and a trail of breadcrumbs
to find our way there.
Thanks Guys!

Awesome Writing!-A great Read!
