This is a great reference guide for both the novice Jazz enthusiast and the connoisseur. It is wonderfully referenced and cross-referenced and is easy to read with biographical notes on the musicians and on the music itself and some great photographs of the artists and/or the album covers. With CD's costing the earth this book has given me the confidence to branch out in my jazz selections. I may not like everything that I purchase but I at least I now have a reference point to start at.

Its always fascinating to see what a celebrity has to say about their time in the limelight even if its seen through a gauze towards rewriting history. This is another fascinating insight into the world of Jeanette during her heyday.

Great collection of pictures of Jeanette MacDonald
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

Sharon Rich has pulled together an outstanding collection of black-and-white photographs of the great musical star Jeanette MacDonald. This book contains hundreds of photos of Jeanette, her costars, family and associates, ranging from lovely formal portraits to funny "gag" shots (like the dog house she had herself rolled onto the set of "Naughty Marietta" in to apologize to the director, W.S. Van Dyke, for a goof she had made, and a boxing match between herself and Nelson Eddy staged to promote "Sweethearts"). Strongly recommended; buy this in conjunction with the Citadel Press book _The Complete Films of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy_, also available through Amazon Marketplace.

Jeffrey Gitomer's writing style is very good for busy people. His books are concise, well illustrated, easy to read, and always contain information from which even a seasoned sales professional will learn new ideas. This book shows a person how to successfully network and build working relationships in a sincere and polished manner. Like all of his books, there are some exercises and questions for you to complete that will personalize your learning experience. This book is so key to excellent selling, it might be one that your read every year or so to sharpen your skills. There 7 sections in approximately 200 pages and they are covering all aspects of networking; climbing the ladder, earning respect of a powerful mentor, building relationships, associating with powerful people, connecting with powerful people, saying the right things, and maximizing the benefits from these relationships. If you are in sales, this is probably a "must have" along with some of the other books Gitomer has written.

A STORY OF ENDURING LOYALTY AND LOVE
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2009-03-23

Just when we think there couldn't possibly be one word left to be written, said or whispered about the tragic life of Marilyn Monroe something else comes along. Roger Kahn (The Boys Of Summer) has chosen to focus on the sometimes passionate, sometimes stormy, ultimately caring relationship between Joe DiMaggio and Monroe. Often called "the dean of sportswriters," Kahn has an encyclopedic knowledge of sports figures and offers insights into DiMaggio's personality not previously explored.

Of course, one can never know what is truly in another's thoughts or heart yet Kahn has done a yeoman's job of relating Joe and Marilyn's story from their first meeting when she finds Joe attractive, really quite shy as she saw herself to be, through their courtship to their marriage and its dissolution a scant nine months later. Ultimately, there is DiMaggio's dawning realization that Marilyn cannot be saved and then the heartbreak of her too-early death. All that was left for him was to plan her funeral.

Topnotch voice performer Dick Hill brings respect and meaning to this story which has so often been sensationalized in the press. With an easy listening voice, nuance, and intonations he captures the couples and joys and sorrows. Many will remember the popular Hill from his previous audio book recordings. He has received three Audie Awards and been named a Golden Voice and a Voice of the Century by AudioFile magazine.

This is, in large part, a touching, sad story but also one of enduring loyalty and love.

Why this Edition?

Review Date: 2009-05-25
EXTRA'S IN THIS EDITION:
This edition is packed with great extra's. 50 full page illustrations from the original publication, other smaller illustrations, old reviews, an 1895 article on Verne, a biography and an introduction by Mark Rich. This edition is certainly a tribute to Verne, and definitely a collector's item.

STORY REVIEW:
Jules Verne explores a realm of fantastical possibilities deep within the bowels of the earth. The journey starts in the professor's study in Germany where an ancient parchment leads him and his nephew on an expedition to a remote mountain on Iceland. There they discover a deep chasm which leads the explorers to an amazing string of discoveries. There are vast oceans of water, giant mushrooms, storms, strange weather patterns, and a wide assortment of extinct creatures. This was Jules Verne's first dive into science fiction. A must read for any science fiction or fantasy lover.

OVERVIEW:
This was a great read, and possibly one of the most updated translations of the original French work. Loved the illustrations.

Looking for a cheaper edition without all of the extra's:
