its nigh next to impossible to find good solid stories about Andromache, the oft forgotten wife of Hector in Homer's Iliad. Byer however obviously loved her and he's done an amazing job of gathering together all the legends and myths that surrounded her life (you didn't think it ended with the Iliad, did you? not by far). This is the last book in his four book series and its worth going through the trouble of finding them all to enjoy. My favorite is the first in the series, The Winning of Andromache but I'm a romantic. In his last book Andromache has survived the fall of Troy, the loss of her husband, her bondage to Neoptolmeus and the threats on her life from Helen's daughter. This last book is about her triumph and her determination in again crossing the Aegean Sea to return to her beloved homeland - this time not as a slave in tears but as a triumphant queen coming to take back her place in the land with her young son at her side. Byers fills in the blanks in the myths very well. A bit of an old fashioned writer but he spins a compelling yarn. If you want to read a good story about the lady that held the heart of the greatest warrior of Troy and get a glimpse as to why she could - ready Byers' series. He was a relief to find in an otherwise very dry literary desert regarding this fascinating woman.

Some of the finest advisors share their portfolio philosophies. Excellent for a big picture view, while acknowledging current structural changes that may require more exposure to alternative asset classes, hard assets, and hedging-like strategies. Highly, highly recommended.

Adventures in the Wallowa Valley
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-05
Barbara Lantz's first venture into the world of literature is a moving and touching story. The story follows Kathy Bradly, a divorced mother of three, who finds a connection with the ghost of a Nez Perce chief named Joseph. As their bond strengthens, Kathy learns of the real life tragedy that befell his tribe, when in 1877 the US government forced them off their land Oregon's Wallowa Valley. Both Kathy and the Chief are bound together by mutual sorrow. Driven by a sense of overwhelming injustice, Kathy ventures forth to the Wallowa Valley in an attempt to right a 100 year old wrong.
Mrs. Lantz's writing style is both visceral and immediate, you are instantly drawn into her detailed characters. She has a real sense of connection when describing her characters connections with nature.

This book has everything from a haunting encounter with a Nez Perce ghost to a desperate flight down the flooding waters of the Snake river. If you have any interest in the plight of the native peoples of this country, I highly recommend this passionate and insightful book.

A Undiscoverd gem!

This book has a simple agenda and a simple approach to life as it explores the value of courage in everyday life. Translated from the French version it loses none of it's fire and prose. The author's wit and outlook on life are still valuable and as wise as they were in 1987 when this book first came into translation for English readers.

A great book to sit back and slowly read and think about. Might make a good book for a weekend retreat to the beach, mountains, or even just holed up in your house on a cold winter's day. It refects a good wholesome view of what you can do though using your own personal courage. A good book for the soul!

Excellent Compendium of Tragic Stories

This book, in its second version, includes case studies of 15+ archaeological tragedies. The author and contributing experts document the history of the diaspora of archaeological artifacts from their provenances, the use of these articles in nationalistic and religious contexts, and the struggle for repatriation. This is an excellent book for any archaeologist as it reminds us of the modern context of our work. In addition, students of art history, law, anthropology, and history will find the book useful in its breadth of coverage. I have used this book in curriculum building for undergraduate archaeology students.

The littlest ones will seize on Agee's bold and hilarious illustrations as they follow the understated story of an early transatlantic flyer who runs out of gas in the French countryside and turns his inept hand briefly to farming before going on to accolades in Paris, a new flying adventure -- and disaster.

A near-masterpiece of revisionist constitutional history
Helpful Votes: 28 out of 28 total.
Review Date: 1999-06-28
Despite the fact that constitutional historians rank George Sutherland among the 'near-greats" of the Supreme Court, the first-and only -Supreme Court Justice from Utah has been largely forgotten. If he is remembered at all, he it is only as the most able of that notorious reactionary quartet, the "Four Horsemen"-Sutherland, Van Devanter, Butler, and McReynolds- who stuggled in vain to overturn The New Deal. This is a pity, and not only because to be remembered as the most able of the Four Horsemen is akin to being remembered as the most able Italian General of World War Two. Sutherland was no blind reactionary ( And, to be fair, neither was the technically brilliant, but inarticulate Van Devanter), but a creative, often insightful jurist, whose contributions to legal theory still affect our lives today. Almost all of Modern zoning law, for example, comes from his decision in Euclid vs.Ambler, while His eloquent opinion in Powell vs.Alabama ( the 'Scottsboro Boys'case)helped to blaze the trail for the modern understanding of fair trials. Also, his opinions in U.S. vs. Curtis-Wright amnd Humphreys executor contributed much to our understanding of the scope and limits of Presidential power. If Arkes' book were merely an reminder of George Sutherlands many contributions to Constitutional law, it would be welcome. However, it is more than that, much more. The only previous scholarly study of Sutherland and his career, Douglas Paschal's A Man Versus the State, while largely sympathetic, had cast the Justice as an a disciple of Herbert Spencer and John Stuart Mill-a libertarian Social Darwinist. It is both the genius and the flaw of Hadley Arkes'brilliant, stimulating book to argue instead that Sutherland stood firmly in the tradition of Natural rights and natural Law, a tradition which , while it might be widely misunderstood ( witness, for example, the splenetic, nearly illiterate assaults on Clarence Thomas), still has an important part to play in constitutional thought. Arlkes book argues for this understanding, and for the continuing importance of Sutherland's thought, with clarity, wit and learning. It is a very fine book. Why, then do I call it only a 'near-masterpiece' and speak of it as 'flawed'.Two reasons. First, Arkes, for all his intelligence, has an excessively mechanical, rationalistic and eighteenth century view of the Natural Law.This reader prefers a more Thomistic-and, dare I say it, somewhat more liberal- approach, in which charity plays as imporatant a role as reason.Secondly, for all the insight the book offers into Sutherlands thought, it also tends to platy down some of the more unpleasant aspects ohf his jurisprudence. Why, for instance, did this champion of natural rights join Holmes in that justices worst decision, Buck vs.Bell? Is it not possible, that, for all the influence of Burlamaqui,Herbert Spencers social Darwinism also played arole in Sutherlands thought? To conclude this review on a somewhat more positive note, I will say that it is one of the most intelligent and stimulating studies of asupreme Court justice, and of the American Constitution , to appear in recent years. One can only hope that it will be followed by studies ,in the same vein , of other Justices committed to the Natural Law, such as Story, the first Harlan, and Murphy. One also hopes that the energetic Professor Arkes will edit a collection of Sutrtherlands opinions, papers, and correspondence. It might provide furthur insight into this very able 'forgotten ' justice.

The Revolt of Gunner Asch
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2000-02-06
The Revolt of Gunner Asch takes place a short time prior to World War II and puts its focus on the life of an everyday German soldier dealing with the intricacies and oxymorons of life in the Wehrmacht. Young Gunner Asch maintains his balance as he sees the changing political climate of his country, and the frustrations brought about by the Army life by use of quick wit, and a truly sardonic sense of humor. When there is a problem in the battery with a young recruit being first crushed and then molded into an Army automaton by the system, Gunner Asch declares his revolt against the system itself. His main weapon will be to follow the regulations precisely as they are written, and not as they are applied. The result is total chaos for the entire battery. Asch, who was considered a good if not ideal soldier quickly becomes the pain in everyone's backside and makes life very interesting for all involved. Adding to the enjoyment is Asch entering in a romantic endeavor. The supporting characters are truly memorable.

The book is a very entertaining read, that is marked by Asch's own quick humor, irony, and social conciousness. On one level it looks at the way that all military systems try to dehumanize young men (and women) to make them soldiers who respond by conditioning and training. The characters are very believeable, well developped and appropriately likeable or despicable. Any veteran of military service will easily be able to place certain people of their own experience into this novel.

I often found myself laughing out loud while readin this book, shaking my head in frustration, and thoroughly enjoying myself. I heartily reccomend this book.

This book is still one of the most powerful and lucid expositions of the return of Christ I have ever read. It is pre-millenial and pre-tribulationist, but most of all thoroughly scriptural.

Pache's logic is inexorable. His handling of scripture is straightforward, and in its simplicity is quite elegant.
