Beautiful Informative Picture Book
This author was on Oprah recently and was excellent. THe book is full of information and big, dreamy pictures or bedrooms. THe concepts of what your body needs for restful sleep are fascinating & effective!

Invaluable for the person looking for better sleep
If people only knew that the sleep environment is the key to good sleep, most sleep difficulties would vanish. And this is the focus the book takes. Everything from actually trying out a mattress before you buy to the big importance of quality bed linens. Cheap sheets or pillows or even poor window covering just do not make for a good sleep. The author also discusses what not to do or have in ones bedroom be it light that disrupts sleep or some electronic equipment.

We know that once the TV and lit clock left the room and black out shades that kept outdoors light out were installed that sleeping thru the night became a reality and we actually look forward to going to bed for the needed amount of sleep.

Great ideas for creating bedroom retreats
This is a fantastic book for anyone looking for great ideas on decorating their bedroom and creating a special retreat. There are a wide variety styles from soft, simple and peaceful to eclectic and packed with books and art.

The book starts out with hints on choosing linens and the right mattress as well as keeping them in good shape. It also offers ideas for headboards and advice on choosing furniture. Feng Shui notes and secrets for getting a better nights rest are included here as well. There is even a section on using color.

This book not only covers bedroom basics, it also covers bedrooms as retreats and places for relaxing or taking a nap. I absolutely love the idea of creating a retreat in a tent. I also liked the sunny bedrooms with large windows and skylights. The pictures included are large and numerous with captions describing their details.

A list of architects and designers with contact information is included in the back. The other books in the spaces series are also very good. Looking at this book is a great way to find ideas suitable to your personal taste, no matter what it may be.

The Importance of Community Development
Through statistical and qualitative analysis, this book illustrates the importance of community-wide development as a key to the economic rejuvenation of the inner city. The analysis is comprehensive and provides an excellent resource for individuals and entities involved in community development.

Change Lives By Changing Neighborhoods
This book offers a detailed look at the agents of change in two Chicago neighborhoods. By rigorously analyzing the measures of improvement in the quality of life of these neighborhoods, the author increases our awareness and knowledge of how neighborhood change and stability occurs. I would recommend this book to anyone working in this field who wishes to broaden their knowledge and increase their effectiveness.

Big Plans: The Allure and Folly of Urban Design

Urban Design is a Folly, Except Under Certain Conditions
Mr. Kolson's grasp of the history and politics of urban design is remarkable. My one criticism is "Big Plans..." is more about the former than the latter. The other point he makes is that Jane Jacobs was right and the planners and urban designers are more about order than about how a city develops, although sometimes they are guided by a firm political hand, e.g. the Catholic Church in Italy, the governments in Britain and France. I would have appreciated knowing what Mr. Kolson thinks urban design should be about, which ones succeeded and why, and how to make an urban design in the competitive development community, chaotic and competing opinions in our democracy, and just plain political stupidity of America's city planning markets. I would appreciate some ideas from Mr. Kolson about how urban designers should think and what should be the focus of their civic designs in today's world that needs order and a community focus more than ever.

A critical review of government planning through the ages
This book is a fascinating review of the way governments attempt to control the growth and architecture of cities. It proceeds chronologically from Trajan's Rome to present day London, with a special emphasis on Cleveland of the early 1900's. While this area of study has a long history (think of Lewis Mumford's "The City in History"), this is not just another academic tome. Ken Kolson has made both the history and the academic debates accessible to the layman.

Here's the question: Can a governmental unit, whether an emperor, city planner, zoning commission, or legislature, succeed in making a city more vibrant or livable? Here's a hint from the book -- in Reston, VA homeowners in a development pay $11,000 apiece to demolish a modernist plaza designed as public space for the community. From the forced imploding of public housing to the history of urban "renewal" in our large cities, the dismal track record of governmental actions in cities is in front of us every day. Ken Kolson lays it out here in a breezy, informative style that teaches but doesn't preach.

If you enjoy architecture, politics, or industrial archeology (my interest), buy this book! You won't be sorry! If you live in Northeast Ohio, buy it regardless -- just tying the history to the existing structures in Cleveland today should be fascinating!

I hope this book will keep alive the debate of what the future holds for America's cities.

Christianity in Africa: The Renewal of a Non-western Religion

christianity in africa
great book, please e-mail me your summary of the book! i would love hear other perspectives.

AFRICA: THE SALVATION OF CHRISTIANITY
Bediako's new book is the best to date on African theology. The author looks at the history of theological development in Africa. Many will be surprised to learn that Africans began forming their own theological evaluations of the new religion very soon after its acceptance: African theology is not a recent phenomenon. Bediako demolishes the ethno-centric arguments of both mission apologists and antagonists by conclusively demonstrating that the African appropriation of Christian faith as an African religion overrides all claims to an European-centered Christianity. Not only is Christianity an African religion, but its appropriation by Africans may be its revitalization. Christianity was distorted by the way it entered Europe, i.e., forced conversions and violence, but in Africa the true primalness of the Christian faith resurfaces. The only weakness of the book is that its scholarly nature will prevent many from searching its depths

Great Book
This book was a great read. I really enjoyed what was said and I think it is going to prove helpful in my ministry. The only complaint that I would have is that the author seems to skip around alot but that is only because the book covers alot of broad ground in 175 pages. However, the chapters on the Nature of the Church and the Ministry of the Church are worth the price of the book alone. All in all, this is a great book that everyone who wants to fulfill the Great Commission should read.

If six stars were possible...
Van Gelder has written an extremely important and profoundly insightful book about the church. He has an excellent understanding of North American Christianity and the cultural temptations which have shaped the current models for church. He lays out a foundation for the church as a christ-centered missional community. This book is rich in theology and philosophy and leads the reader to very practical conclusions about how we might "do church" differently. This is not a step-by-step method for the average church to apply to its existing programs. In fact it raises paradigm-shifting questions that speak to very foundational issues regarding the nature and purpose of the Body of Christ. It is a must read.

A very pleasant story about urban revitalization
I have read a lot of books about the issue and they use to be boring and very dificcult to read. This one is the great exception! I really have enjoyed the way the stories are narrated, and the complete information they provide. As an architect specialized in Urban Economics at Buenos Aires , I have found this book very useful for my own research on the issue.

A great look at how cities live and die!
Gratz explores how and why cities survive, thrive and die and explores why small, incremental change is often a more successful revitalization strategy than super "downtown malls" or sportsplexes.

It turns out the key to a lively and lovely city is people of all socioeconomic brackets who actually LIVE downtown, which attracts business, arts and culture!

A Challenging Book

I finished this book almost ten days ago and have not yet been able to write a satisfactory review of it. I began several times, but each time found I was missing some important aspect of it. I believe the source of my trouble is that I read this book only after reading many others that came after. If I had read this book when it was published (1986) I would seen it as groundbreaking. But today, when we are surrounded by books on the principles of church growth, this book does not seem to have much new to add.

One thing that is unique about this book is that it was written by a Presbyterian pastor who also taught at Westminster Theological Seminary. Though church growth and large churches are generally associated with evangelicalism, this book details the rise of a large Reformed church. Also, this book deals with outgrowing an existing church whereas many newer books that discuss church growth do so from a church-planting perspective.

The book traces John C. Miller's growing awareness of the problem of ingrownness in his calling as a pastor. Naturally his church was only as good as its leader and it also suffered from ingrownness. We see the discoveries the pastor made that led him to outgrowing his ingrown church. The author's journey began with a breakdown as he grew frustrated with his church and with being a pastor, so left the ministry. During a time of searching he came to realize that as pastor he was the source of the problem and to build his church into one motivated to carry out the Great Commission he would need to make changes. He details this journey and in so doing challenges others to discover the power of God rather than attempting to abide in their own power and with their own resources.

Though a good book full of solid teaching, I believe it would best serve as an introduction to church growth and to outgrowing a stagnant church. If you have read other books on the subject this many not excite you very much. Those wary of evangelicalism may also find comfort in the fact that this is written from a Reformed perspective. When it comes to specifics about church growth there have been many books written since this one that will probably prove more useful.

Challenged to Change
In C. John Miller's book, Outgrowing the Ingrown Church,I found an answer to why the Church seems lacking in vitality and growth. Miller explains this as a failure of an ingrown Church to accept the challenge of living out its missionary purpose. I was amazed to find myself taking on the ingrownness of my own Church, renewing our vision, and leading us through the trials that followed with greater spiritual energy and deeper contentment that I'd ever known. Though I first read this book eight years ago, I continue to go back to soak up Miller's message. I encourage anyone who cares about the Church to read this book. You will find yourself saying "yes, yes!" as Miller renews your passion for the Church's great mission.

Essential reading for Jewish spiritual seekers
Just so that people don't get the idea from the other review that the book is about Jesus: This is one of THE essential works in the movement known as Jewish renewal, by one of the most profound and original Jewish thinkers of our time. Follow "Reb Zalman" on his lifelong spiritual journey as he explores interfaith relations (beyond the "I love you, you love me" banalities that often pass for dialogue), previous instances of the reconstruction of Judaism, exciting old and new prayer and meditation techniques, and visions of Judaism's and humanity's future.

Paradigm shift is a winner for our times.
The Paradigm Shift is a fascinating book. Extremely well presented arguement that would appear to confirm the information in the incredible novel "THE Autobiography of Jesus of Nazareth and the Missing Years" by Richard G. Patton. Patton's book goes into detail about Jesus' training BEFORE he appeared on the political scene of first century Palestine. Shalomi's book goes behind the evident historical perspective to explain WHY we live in the present turbulent times and how they relate to the taumatic events of Jesus' times. Highly recommended.

Want to know what is happening to the church, and why?
Robert Stearns has written a wonderful book about the ways in which today's church is changing, and the ways in which it still needs to change. He writes in a manner that makes it very difficult not to be excited about the times we are living in as Christians. It should give all believers much hope and joy. The "What Now?" section at the end of every chapter is a very nice touch. It lets the reader see how one might apply the reading to one's life, as an individual, or as part of a group. Having read the book, I feel the title, "Prepare the Way", is not just a commandment, but more of a simple statement. The Lord WILL prepare the way, with or without us, but how much better is it to be a part of the master plan, rather than to just sit on the sidelines, comfortable in our own salvation, watching from a distance?

Rewarding, challenging, encouraging reading.
Robert Stearns believes the Church will embark on a new role as it wends its way through the first decades of a new millennia. He notes that Western society is desperately searching for meaning beyond the material, and views the church as being poised to fill this need with spiritual truths. In Prepare The Way, Stearns charges that no only is that change coming, it is already upon us. He encourages Christians to embrace this change and to understand what God is doing, and how to be alight in a spiritually darkened and needy world. Prepare The Way is demanding, motivating, penetrating reading that will reward and encourage the reader to help the Christian community prepare for, and meet, the challenges of our new era.

Powerful
This book really ministered to me concerning revival, and if you are a fan of folks like Leonard Ravenhill, you will enjoy this book. The only part of the book I found rather weak was the last couple chapters that were a large collection of sniplets from the personal Journal of Oswald J Smith. In my opinion, they did not add much to the book, and sometimes it made me wonder if Oswald J Smith really was sound in his faith. Overall though, good book.

Amazing Book.. A Must READ!!!
"Had I the wealth of a millionaire I would put "The Revival We Need" in every Christian home on this continent and confidently look for a revival which would sweep round the world." - Jonathan Goforth

I have read the book three times and I imagine I will read it many more times. I believe as Jonathan Goforth that this book needs to be read by all christians in these days. May God grant us a revival of religion and an influx of precious souls into His church before Jesus comes back.
