Marshall Islands Rituals
In Nuclear Nativity, Carucci explores the rituals, customs, and meanings of the Kurijmoj festival. Feasts, competitive games, speeches, dances, songs of apocalypse, and gestures of extraordinary generosity are among the means by which Enewetak and Ujelang people celebrate the festival. Carucci thoroughly investigates the empowering aspects of these ritual devices. He gives special attention to the array of valu ables and intricate scenarios of exchange - including food and money, speeches and songs - and illuminates the ways that people create histories of Kurijmoj tracing the festival to its ancient or Christian sources depending on their positions or status in the community. Carucci's book will engage Pacific anthropologists, ethnographers, and scholars interested in the anthropology of religion and ritual.

Open Organizations: A Model for Effectiveness, Renewal and
This book is a unique guide for both external consultants and internal change agents for facilitating change in an organization. It also identifies the components that are necessary to ensure an organization's success. Mink's nine-window model, discussed in the book, offers an excellent at-a-glance framework to assist organizations in identifying where they are, in regards to a functional and open organization. The nine-window model may be a tool that change agents can use to demonstrate (to others) their organization's readiness for a fully open organization.

The book is an excellent reference resource for designing and implementing change initiatives. Consultants, change agents, managers, human resource executives and others will find this book a very practical guide for organizational change.

Papal power : a proposal for change in Catholicism's third millennium
Published in Unknown Binding by HarperCollinsReligious (1997)
Author: Paul Collins

An excellent history with a good emphasis on the past
"Papal Power" was my first ever understanding of the papacy, and remains a very good reference point. Though the book is subjective in wasy that under the present attitude of the papacy were disastrous for the author, it offers an excellent assessment of the way in which the Catholic Church has evolved.

Unlike many books on the history of the papacy, "Papal Power" has a very good focus on the history of the church, though one can suspect bias. There is a clear account of the way in which the papacy developed elaborate theories of papal power but without the communications to enforce them.

Most significantly, there is a very clear account of the way in which the pope became infallible through such authors as de Maistre's "Du Pape" and the neo-ultramontane movement. This neo-ultramontane movement argued that everything the pope says in infallible - in contrast to the definition at Vatican I which restricted infallibility quite severely, though the Wojtyla papacy has breached these boundaries since Ordinatio Sacerdotalis. The neo-ultramontanes, the best known of which were William Ward and Henry Manning, were well prepared and even influenced Pius IX, who this book suggests may have illegitimately fathered a son.

The book looks, if in a rather biased manner, at the effects this extreme concentration of papal power has had on the Catholic Church. It states that much of what the Vatican is concerned with today is nothing more than preserving its power, and follows on this very logically. If "Papal Power" has one serious flaw, it is in arguing that reforms of the papacy have a chance of occurring in the future. In reality, the third millennium of Catholicism will be characterised by a movement from a large church to a much smaller church comprised of members steadfastly loyal to the doctrines presented by Joseph Ratzinger and John Paul II. Open dissent will be even more severely censored than under the Wojtyla papacy and the ideas - interesting reading though they were/are - of progressive reformers will be the preserve of archives of secular universities.

Nonetheless, this cannot dimiss the fact that "Papal Power" is a very impressive study of the way the papacy has evolved into the absolute monarchy of today.

What makes Paris what it is?
This book is fascinating. I have taken my copy to Paris and back several times. Lots of great pictures of old Paris scenes. The NYT says "... it is not a guidebook at all but a study of urban planning. It is about what makes Paris work and, as such, makes fascinating reading fro any lover of the city."

Greak book!
As someone who is tremendously interested in the various modes of Christian spirituality, I found this book to be better than I could have asked for. It is well authored and has information that is useful to both those who are just becoming interested in the subject, or for someone who has had more experience. It is a very easy read and has excellent content. It is a great addition to any theological librairy.

Politics of Urban America: A Reader

Excellent Reference for Urban Scholarship
The Judd and Kantor reader is an outstanding collection of important writings in urban political science. It is a refreshing mix of classic work (e.g., Sam Bass Warner)and more recent scholarship (e.g., Myron Orfield).

This book has all the relevant topics for the urban social scientist, and has excerpts from the best authors: Stone on urban regimes, Erie on political machines, Abbott on Sunbelt cities, Wilson on class and race, Peterson on mobility of capital.

Judd and Kantor have made an outstanding contribution by compiling these readings into a single volume. Teachers and students alike will find this immensely useful. Libraries should have this book on their shelves.

Readers may also enjoy reading the earlier editions of this book. Judd and Kantor have made difficult decisions to edit out some very good articles in order to make room for more current content. The second edition has valuable articles not found in the third, such as Zukin on Power and Gans on Levittown, and the first edition (then called "Enduring Tensions") has valuable selections from scholars like Daniel Boorstin. All three editions stand together on my bookshelf and provide an invaluable reference in my work. I think anyone who studies cities will find them equally valuable.
