Insight into Addiction
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-21
This book shows that one doesn't have to be an addict or alcoholic to understand us. The whole spectrum of the disease of addiction is here, written with insight and love. For a small book this is a heavyweight. If you have a loved one still in active addiction this book will get you into the addict's mind before starting to use or drink, during the use, and into recovery when the drugs and drink are stopped.

This is a strong book in personal exploration, even if you aren't attending a 12 step program. It could easily be tied to your personal journaling or even a bible study, especially the The Life Recovery Bible NLT (Nlt). If you are an Al-Anon member, this is the suggested Conference Approved Literature (CAL) for completing a fourth step. Many Al-Anon members believe that the fourth step from AA is the approved method, but it isn't. The AA column method was written for the recovering alcoholic. Please remember there is no "right way" to complete a fourth step and be very kind to yourself during the process.

Secrets of the past are found as the glaciers melt
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2009-03-19
There could be many reasons why the earth's glaciers are melting, including global warming. One unusual phenomenon we are now seeing is the "appearance" of those who died on or around them, some just decades ago and others thousands of years ago! Erika and Helmut Simon unwittingly made a discovery on the Niederjoch Glacier that would stun the archaeological world. "It's a person," she said. Yes, it was Ötzi and he had been there for more than five thousand years. He was amazingly preserved, but why?

Glaciers fascinate people. Louis Agassiz, the father of glaciology, lived on them for more than five years trying to discover their secrets. He wasn't the first to take note of glaciers, for indeed in the 1600s people were afraid of them saying, "We are terrified of the glaciers." Because of them there, was a terrible loss of life and property. Glaciers around the world hid many other secrets and people. There were the sacrificed frozen children of the Andes, "buried based on their perfect looks." George Mallory's fate remained a mystery for decades. There was even an alpine morgue with many, many unidentified corpses.

As a child I remember having an insatiable curiosity about how people lived in the past. Archeological finds and history still fascinate young people today. This is an outstanding book. The writing is entrancing and the photographs, lithographs and maps all contribute to the wonder of this work. This material can spark the imagination, not only about the past, but also our future.

Of course I rated the book with 5-stars as I was the author's wife and editor. However, the only "editing" I did was to suggest thathe move the chapter, "The Day the Cat Died" to the beginning of the book because of its power, and as it is a metaphor for the rest of the book.

Other things you may want to know about Al and the book:

1. Several years before he died Al asked a psychic if he would ever have a book published, his dearest wish. She answered with a strange look on her face that he would "before you die". Daryl Sharp of Inner City Books called five days before Al died to let him know that he was going to publish the book.

2. "The Day the Cat Died" was initially published independently in the L.A. Weekly by Michael Ventura.

3. Al was sweet, shy, personable, always interesting, and multi-talented. To note, while others will remember the wit and intelligent simplicity of his lectures and papers, one of my favorite memories is of him, shirt off on the roof of our three storied house, happily belting out German drinking songs while successfully snaking the toilets down through of all three levels simultaneously.

4. The book remains elegant, beautiful, timely, and maintains universal appeal judging by its translations, citations in the works of others, and its resultant number entries found through internet searches.

Body Scripture: A therapist's journal of recovery

Body Scripture by clinical social worker, Barbara Hope, is a well-written, engrossing tale of a therapist's complex journey through her own recovery from childhood trauma. Since reading this compelling story of human courage and frailty, I have recommended it widely to friends and colleagues. The book will appeal to a broad audience: individuals who have experienced childhood trauma, therapists who work with trauma survivors, and those of us who care about friends and family members who live with the memories of childhood abuse.

Excellent history of wildlife re-introduction.

A must for wildlife watchers! This small but impressive book gives us behind the scenes info about how various species were brought back from near extinction in Tennessee to large populations - deer and turkey are two marvelous examples. Markham, via interviews, makes even the failed effort to bring back the red-cockaded woodpecker an interesting story. Many little known facts appear about species we may think we know - the book is worth it just for that. And Markham has done a wonderful job of writing - try it, you'll be facinated!

Great book for any woman
Helpful Votes: 27 out of 28 total.

I really liked The Breast Cancer Prevention and Recovery Diet. It walked me through all the basics of breast cancer, how it develops, what the risks are, what the different types are, how to recognize different symptoms, what to expect at the doctor, and what the different treatment options are. Then it explained how to minimize your risk of developing breast cancer or improving your chances of recovery through nutrition. Suzannah explained which foods to avoid and which foods to include. She suggested making gradual changes that seem really do-able. She includes easy, appealing recepies and lots of menu ideas. Everything is backed up with a lot of research, but the book is easy-to-understand and speaks on a very personal level. The Breast Cancer Prevention and Recovery Diet reminded me of Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book, which I really liked also. I think this is a great book for any woman interested in better health.
