This gourd book covers staining, carving, weaving, dying, insetting stones or resin and more. This book is good for the beginner on up. It tells you about gourds, how to clean green gourds or dried gourds. I like this book as it explains what tools to use and how they work on the gourds. The book has some patterns for decorating your gourds too. This book has great photos to show you the steps to get to the finished project. There are so many ideas/projects that it will be hard to decide what to try first! A must have book for a gourder!

I love this textbook (as much as you can love a textbook). This is the bible for your cardiology block. I've read it cover to cover and think it's probably the best textbook (by far) I own. Not only does it provide information in a concise fashion, but it explains it very well too.

This book is #1 on my Top 10 List of All-time Best Medical Texts. I first read this book as an undergraduate during the summer after anatomy and physiology. I might have understood about 5% of it since my medical vocabulary was limited, but I was able to read it because of the clarity of its prose. I read it again in PA school and fell in love with it because it explains the 'how' and the 'why' underlying cardiac physiology and pathophysiology. Most texts I read simply state the facts and do not explain 'how' a disease creates clinical manifestations, 'how' an invasive therapeutic intervention is performed, etc. This book does all of that, and does it in a clear and succinct manner. The only shortcoming of this text is its EKG section; it is simply an introduction to EKGs and is not sufficient for learning how to interpret them.

Excellent resource for MS-II

This is a well written text, which can be read - and more importantly, understood - in a couple of days.

The text does a nice job of reviewing the physiology of the heart, in the context of each disease process. It repeats important points of the physiology throughout each chapter, such that you've got a generally good understanding of the reading by the time you finish the book. Lilly also provides enough pathology and treatment content to give a full picture of each disease. It does not, however, give extremely detailed pathology on each topic.

For a second year medical student, this text was sufficient to master the content of cardiac pathophysiology. I would strongly recommend it for that purpose.

The Art of Polymer Clay Millefiori Techniques: Projects and Inspiration for Creative CaneworkI was curious when I read the negative review of this book so I had to buy it to see why anyone would write a negative review on Donna Kato??? Wow, am I glad I bought this book. I am a clayer but not a caner. I decided long ago, I can't do it so I won't! Pout, pout! After I got this book, I tried the techniques and I am now a caner!! The explanations, photos, projects are so clear that I did it!! One review felt Donna was pushing her line of clay? Duh!!!! What brand do you think she is going to use but her own??!! It's the best on the market right now for polymer clays. I am mainly a Premo/ Fimo Soft person but I switched. Donna's clay is far superior. Her book isn't advertising it, it just makes sense that she uses her own products. Why would she use another?? It's a great book, one of the best in my vast collections and the most comprehensive on canes I've seen yet. Thanks Donna

I have found this book to be one of the best books on Polymer Clay Techniques I have seen. Donna Kato explains everything from the most basic polymer clay techniques all the way through the most advanced techniques you can use in your Polymer Clay designs.

Her instructions are detailed and are illustrated well. The photographs in the book are clear and detailed, and help you to visualize what Donna Kato is teaching.

The book is great for the beginner as well as the advanced Polymer Clay user. It gives detailed instructions on how to make any of the pieces of jewelery featured in the book.

My main complaint about the book is that it tries too hard to sell the Kato PolyClay, the brand that Donna Kato endorses. The best way to choose your clay is to experiment with the different types and see what works for your projects and creative processes.

I already had Donna Kato's first book and wasn't sure why I would need another one or if it would have much "new" stuff that I didn't already find in the first book. However, I had read some great reviews from members in my clay group and decided to get the new one.
What a wonderful book! For those of you that are failry new to caning or millefiori, you will LOVE this book.
If you have always admired Donna's work and wondered how she got such lovely results then you will want this book. She doesn't just give you tiny tidbits to help you "almost" know how to do something - she gives you the real thing! The lessons for her techniques are complete and the instructions are easy to follow. She doesn't leave you hanging about wondering about the 'rest of the technique'.
There were many things in her book that I had wanted to know how to do and she did not disappoint. She is very generous in sharing her knowledge.
The price is extremely reasonable and it is worth every penny and more. I would recommend this book to my best friend or ANYONE that loves polymer clay!

I have applied methods in this book and a related seminar to a number of real projects and have gotten excellent results. I am not an IT person and was placed in charge of systems. The book helped me to plan and execute a huge IT project from scratch.I have 12 staff who were applications programmers of which 2 were analysts. I divided their tasks and attached them to users per the ideas in the book. The approach was applied to enhancements, new systems for tender evaluation and purchasing, and hardware. Per the methods of the book, all arising matters with management, vendors, and users were seen as issues and not as problems. By the team approach we were able to sack one person and reassign his roles. A 4 year project was finished in 2 years. Hardware and WAN were completed in two months. Right now we are planning a project to reach out to the remotest plantations that we own that is another 170 areas. We are using the book here as well. The key idea here is that the methods in this book are different and WORK.

IT projects are very different from standard projects. This books provides an in-depth approach to managing IT projects. It has some very good specific tips regarding risk analysis, the management critical path (as opposed to the critical path), the use of score cards for project evaluation, how to deal with issues, and how to use lessons learned and experience to get continuous improvement in project management. In addition, the book focuses on templates rather than the traditional work breakdown structure-so it is gives greater flexibility. Another novel approach is use of the team members in participating in project management. Overall, very useful and informative.

Our organization has reviewed over 50 books in IT and general project management from the view of usability and useful methods for a multiple project, complex environment. We found books like Schwabe and Menche somewhat useful, but very limited in dealing with the actual problems faced in projects. There was just too much introductory material. This book, on the other hand, is very useful in that it addresses problems such as scope creep, changing requirements, high management expectations, dealing with vendors and users, and other specific issues. It is also being translated into Chinese. This is the book you should get if you want to address problems in real projects and want specific guidelines.

This is a good book for learning how to make your own hypertufa and concrete ornaments, including how to make the molds or reinforcements. Some of the projects are of overwhelming size for a person who is interested in small things for their garden. I like the planters, but some of the other things in this book are way too modern and gaudy for me.

If you want to learn to do concrete ornaments for your yard, there is an incredible book still in print since 1904 called Concrete Pottery and Garden Furniture by Ralph C. Davison, which shows how to make garden ornaments such as columns, table, benches, planters in the Victorian and Greek styles--more my taste. This little book is packed with valuable photos and diagrams of how it's done.

I would recommend Davison's book over this one, but Warner's book still has some great recipes for hypertufa and unique ways to construct molds for concrete statuary.

Klutz generally markets its books and kits to the 'tween and teen ages, but I am several times that old and I LOVE this book. I tried two general "how to crochet" books/pamphlets prior to this and flunked out. I was determined to learn, so I bought this in hopes it would be simple enough to help me through the parts I wasn't grasping. It was.

As several other reviewers have already mentioned, the illustrations and instructions are clear and the writers don't assume you know anything, but they don't talk down to you, either. They mention common pitfalls and how to get around them, and their teaching style is simple and fun. The detailed and clear drawings make it very easy to see where to put your hook for a new stitch, and that can be one of the most troublesome parts of learning crochet.

I admit I felt a little silly buying a kid's book at 46, but I don't feel that way any longer. I'm thinking about learning to knit, and the Klutz Knitting book will be the FIRST one I buy this time.

Great way to learn

I've had several people try to teach me to crochet before (I'm a basic knitter), but this book illustrates the steps so well, and I can review it again and again. The crochet flower is my favorite, and it looks impressive when completed even though it only took an hour to learn and make.

Because the Klutz books look like they are written for kids/teens, they are much easier to understand for adults as well! I recommend the knitting book, too!

Now I have bought quite a few how-to-crochet books. Some are great (Happy Hooker) and some not so great...but this one really takes the cake in simplicity and clarity of directions. I learned the bare-bones basics of crochet from my mother-in-law, but having since moved away, I pretty much forgot it all and had to re-teach myself. This book is wonderful, in fact, I'm using it to teach my own mom! If I can use it with enough success to feel confident enough to terach someone else, than anyone can!
As an added plus, the projects are really simple, cute and useful, too...no overly easy dishcloths or way too complicated sweaters here!

Worth it!

A wonderful product! The instructions are simple, precise, and complete to make all the projects in the book. The quality of the included items is very good. I am yet to find a similar quality yarn where I live, southeast US. I was a newbie to crochet and could learn very easily from the book and also help my ten year old get the hang of it pretty soon. She's made the jewelery bag, flowers, bath bag so far and is gifting it to her friends for new year! Buy it, you won't regret it.

"Go home, give your kids a hug, and don't let a day go by without telling them that you love them."

Review Date: 2008-12-15
About 10 years ago. Matthew Shepard was tortured and killed outside of Laramie, Wyoming. His killers, motivated by greed and hate, tied him to a fence on the lonely prairie, beat him, stole his shoes and wallet, and left him to die.

Shepard was found by a bicyclist the next day, but died shortly after in a hospital. In announcing his death, his parents stated ""Go home, give your kids a hug, and don't let a day go by without telling them that you love them."

Four weeks after the death of Matthew Shepard, nine members of the Tectonic Theater Project traveled to Laramie and started collecting interviews with members of the community. They collected over 200 interviews in a 18 month period. The result? The Laramie Project, a powerful play on hate, tolerance, forgiveness, and religion.

This book is the screenplay. I've seen the play performed twice, once in Honolulu and once in Utah. Reading the screenplay wasn't as powerful as experiencing the performance, but it was powerful nonetheless. You are numbed as you "hear", in their own words, people point fingers, make accusations, and try to find meaning in this event.

"I did hear from Matthew about forty-eight hours before his attack. And he told me that he had joined the gay and lesbian group on campus, and that he said he was enjoying it, you know, he was getting ready for Pride Week and whatnot. I mean, he was totally stoked about school - yeah, he was really happy about being there" (p. 20).

"There is a proclamation that came out on the family. A family is defined as one woman and one man and children. That's a family. That's about as clear as you can state it. There's no sexual deviation in the Mormon Church. No - no leniency. We just think it's out-of-bounds" (p. 25).

"If you had a hundred customers like him it'd be the - the most perfect bar I've ever been in. Okay? And nothing to do with sexual orientation. Um, absolute mannerisms. Manners. Politeness, intelligence" (p. 29).

So now it is 2008, not 1998. What has changed? Could this type of crime still happen today? Would the community respond to this event in the same way?

This 112 page paperback is highly recommended.

I read this book and still have a hard time believing nothing has changed since this killing has taken place. If you say you are not homophobic than read this book and you will find that we all are in one way or another. Maybe not as bad as those involved in the killing but we are all a little. I believe this book and the DVD of the same name should be required reading in all Middle and High Schools.

I bought this to read prior to watching the DVD of the Laramie Project, to compare, and was glad I did. It carry's as much if not more of the drama and weightiness of the subject matter, the killing of Matthew Shepard in 1998.

An easy and quick read, it helped me identify the characters later on the DVD, and though in stage format, doesn;t read like a novel. I finsihed it in one afternoon, and if this horrific incident still concerns you, this is a good way to understand how it affected so many in a sparsly populated "city" in a huge mostly unpopulated state.

Hate knows no boundaries, but how it affected Laramie, is well done with an unusual idea. It took great courage to do this project, and shouold be more widely read, if not required reading, for schools.

A Remarkable Theatrical Piece; A Powerful Statement

Review Date: 2007-11-10
Matthew Shepard was about two months short of his twenty-second birth when he was robbed, beaten, tied to a fence post and left to die in a rural area of Wyoming. The man who found him at first thought he was a scarecrow. Rushed to Poudre Valley Hospital at Fort Collins, he died on 12 October 1998--and when Russell Henderson and Aaron McKinney were arrested for the crime they resorted to a defense known as "gay panic." Matthew Shepherd had propositioned them, they said, and they were so horrified that they killed him in response.

The gay community and numerous civil rights watchdog groups were outraged by the defense, and as more and more facts came to light it seemed that the crime was somewhat more complicated than Henderson and McKinney wanted the public to know. Witnesses stated that Henderson and McKinney had specifically targeted Shepherd because he was gay. After much legal wrangling, Henderson pled guilty and testified against McKinney, who was convicted; after still more legal wrangling, and at the request of Shepherd's parents, McKinney escaped the death penalty but has no chance of parole.

The case made headlines from end of the United States to the other and prompted numerous calls for Hate Crimes legislation, which had long been stalled both at the state and federal level. And in the midst of the confusion, chaos, and controversy, Moises Kaufman and the members of The Tectonic Theatre Project arrived on the scene, interviewing more than two hundred people about their thoughts and feelings on the case. These were shaped into THE LARAMIE PROJECT, a drama that debuted in 2000 and which has since shocked, impressed, and deeply moved audiences from coast to coast.

Playscripts are not really intended to be read; they are intended to be performed, and there can be a significant difference between how a script and how it plays. This is particularly true of THE LARAMIE PROJECT, which doesn't consist of scenes or acts but of "moments"--bits and pieces of monologue and dialogue and staging that non-play-readers will likely find difficult to envision. When performed, all those bits and pieces become like tiles in a mosaic: they may seem to mean different things individually, but when performed one right after another they become a unified whole.

Perhaps the single most impressive thing about THE LARAMIE PROJECT is its refusal to "take sides." The play presents its characters and their words with commenting in favor of them or against them; you are instead allowed to interpret for yourself. The result is uniquely powerful. Strongly recommended.

My mom taught me to sew on her machine at the tender age of 6...she was always making such beautiful things!!! Time went by and I stopped sewing..then I started making jewelry and got bit by the crafting bug again! Wanting to "expand my horizons", I purchased a sewing machine a little over a year ago, and have yet to take it out of the box, as I am completely intimidated by the thought of threading the bobbin!!! I picked up Crafty Chica's Guide to Artful Sewing the other day at the bookstore, and was thrilled to see she gives a tutorial to threading a bobbin!!! After looking at a ll the FABULOUS projects she has in there, my favorite being the dress made from scarves, I just had to purchase it and am determined to work through my fear of the bobbin so I can create my own wonderful interpretations of her projects...three cheers for Crafty Chica!!! Okay I admit I haven't touched a sewing machine since Jr. High Home Economics. I dabble in other creative endeavors though, which is how I found out about Kathy and began using her colorful craft paints (great color & coverage by the way). When a friend raved about this book I decided to buy it for my sister who has been sewing for years. When the book arrived I looked through it and before I knew what was happening the Sewing Muse had me by the collar. Simply said, I ordered another copy for myself and started planning my first project.

This chica is crafty indeed, and then some. Even better, she writes clearly and with an unpretentious sense of humor. The projects are approachable for a beginner like me but inspirational enough for an experienced seamstress like my sister.

I bought this for my 7 year old grandson whom I pick up at school 1 x a week. His assignments include reading a chapter from a book. He does read on a 4th grade reading level. This is perfect

I am using this book as a Homeschool Science Course for my children grades 4th, 3rd, and 1st. It is an excellent book with loads of engaging activities. The activities are usually things you have lying around at home in junk drawers, they are inexpensive, fast, convenient and exciting. I am enjoying the experiments as much as my kids. Highly recommended.

I own and have read most everything related to the Mercury through Apollo space program and this book shows new information that I hadn't seen in the other books published by many other astronauts and authors. Information was gathered from a myriad of sources and checked against other sources. The book greatly changed my opinion of a few astronauts and paints the entire NASA program in a more accurate light. The passing of time since the event depicted in the book has allowed the authors to see the "big picture" and step away being politically correct and instead be factual and accurate instead.

Another Masterpiece by Messrs. French and Burgess

Just when I thought I had read everything about the space program, French and Burgess have done it again will a follow-on effort to their book "Into That Silent Sea."

I have no idea when they have the time to create such excellent work, but the latest book begins where the first one ended and includes much information I had never seen before, especially the chapters on the Apollo 1 pad fire and monumental Apollo 8 mission, it alone, a historic accomplishment rivaling the actual Moon landing.

Riddled with numerous never-before seen accounts (at least by me), the book is simply bulging with information such as Lola Morrow's dire premonition concerning the Apollo pad fire, and the raw emotional impact experienced by the crew of Apollo 8 upon seeing the first Earthrise observed by man.

I sincerly hope that Francis and Colin keep up the good work; maybe they could do a similar effort on underwater exploration? That would be such a contribution....

For enthusiasts of the entire space push of the 60's, this book is an excellent and thorough review of the space flights and the exceptional individuals who gave their all for their country's moon goals.

The author delves deep into the Gemini flights in particular, and provides some very interesting personal and mission info, including detailed accounts of the ongoing Soviet missions being conducted in parallel to the US effort.

For those like me that are craving to know the history of the early NASA flights up to Apollo 11, and the individuals that made them successful, I highly recommend this book.

This brilliant book carries the story up to 1969 with many glimpses past Apollo 11. The tragic story of Apollo 1 reminds me of the comments of some Japanese about the arrogance that led to their defeat at the Battle of Midway. They referred to it as victory disease. NASA tried to do too much too fast and three astronauts died as a result.

The story of Soyuz 5's reentry is alone worth the price of the book. Its instrument panel remained attached much longer than it was supposed to and almost killed the pilot since the spacecraft was reentering back to front until it finally was detached. One wonders why the Soviets had not fixed this problem since it appeared in a less dangerous form in the first two Soviet spacecraft.

A while back, I spoke with Marty Votaw about Project Vanguard. He worked on Vanguard 1, the oldest artificial satellite still in orbit, and Minitrack. Marty commented that a problem with the Vanguard rocket was that it was sometimes treated as a production project rather than a development project. The schedule became the god and rockets with problems were shipped to Cape Canaveral to stay on schedule. It was more difficult to fix defects there than at the factory. Even though Gemini was a great success, it took NASA far too long to realize how to correct its EVA problems. A slower pace may have allowed NASA time to learn the lessons from the previous EVA in preparing for the next one.

I highly recommend this book. Even though you know that the Apollo 11 landing will be successful, French and Burgess make the story exciting as Armstrong looks for a good landing site with his fuel running out.

This book - both volumes - gives a tremendous sense of closeness and immediacy to the manned space programme. It is one of the small handful of books on the space age which I would recommend without reservation to non-specialists as well as those in the know. It's both highly readable and a primary source. It's not easy to be fluent when you're working with memories decades old and comparing them with documentary material, so it's a tremendous achievement.
