Pattern Books

I will use these designs greatly. My 11 yr old granddaughter used them to paint designs on water glasses and they came out beautiful! She now wants to use them to make a set for her other realatives.

It's been almost 20 years since I created this reference book for Dover. I am amazed it's still available but not surprised. Since it's creation the designs in this book have been used for the covers of many library publications as well as a whole host of publications needing abstract patterns.

The idea for these patterns grew out of a graphic design assignment in a graphics class at the Art Institute of Boston, MA

They were made from cut paper which was folded twice in half then pieces cut out with an exacto knife. When unfolded, the designs were xeroxed 8 times forward and 8 times backwards then joined together to create patterns and after patterns.

I created hundreds and hundreds of patterns using this simple technique and picked the best 100 as a body of work. My father, a painter and designer himself, suggested I send this work to Dover Publishing in NY. It was 1987. It took about three months for them to get back to me and to my great pleasure and surprise they were interested in creating a book from this work.

The first and only edition of this book has long passed. But the book still lives! I had a blast creating it and could never stop looking at these designs and finding new patterns in them. I hope anyone buying the book gets as much pleasure out of it as I did and still do.

The Kamei Collection dates back to the Meiji period (1868-1912) when it was started by Count Koreaki Kamei, heir to the old Tsuwano Clan of Japan. Th count, who was studying art history and aesthetics in Germany, originally gathered the pieces to serve as reference materials. This comprehensive collection of 19 century European dyeing, weaving, wallpaper, and design patterns for textiles that have all but disappeared today.

This book was writen for carvers who have a little time on their hands to create something, but not as detailed as a complicated carving. These are simple little bird and fish patterns, done in a folk-style method (both carved and painted). They make colorful additions to brighten up the home, and people love them when received as gifts.
