Passive Low Energy Cooling of Buildings
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (01 July, 1994)
Author: Baruch Givoni
Amazon base price: $75.00
Average review score:

Valuable Information
I found the information invaluable though a bit difficult to understand because of the very scientific language used in its presentation.

Essential for anyone interested in the subject
Givoni's book is invaluable for anyone who wants to know of a nearly lost art-- how to cool buildings effectively without resorting to excessive mechanical cooling. What makes his book most valuable is the years of experimental research done to produce empirical data on which the conclusions are based. A treasure trove of ideas.

Opens challenging questions for people seeking social change
I finished this book a few weeks back. It is excellent. Most of it consists of posing devil's advocate type questions from a principled pacifist perspective to people who led anti-colonial struggles and held state power in a number of African countries.
It brings to the fore many questions regarding pacifism, nonviolence and the state that today's anti-globablization activists need to consider. The discussions with Kenneth Kuanda and Julius Nyrere stand out in my mind. These were people who had to deal with key questions of justice, power, compromise and violence. (Incidentally I was not even aware these fellows were still alive.) These are uncomfortable questions that some folks in movements here in the North spend a lifetime evading. Straight from primary sources it is a little rough in places and better organized bibliographic references, perhaps assembled at the end of the text with more information, would be a big plus. But a great and important book nonetheless. If you are serious about revolution you should not ignore this book.

Useful design information
Passive Circuits Design by Ian Sinclair is a good book that shows a lot of insight into how electrical components behave in the real world. Reading the section of the book explaining how capacitors behave was the most useful to me so far.

I found one error on page 194 Cell Origins. The book explains that the cathode is the negative terminal and anode the positive terminal, this is wrong because from other references that I have checked. In Electro-chemical cells the anode is the negative terminal where oxidation takes place. The Cathode is the positive terminal where reduction takes place.

The book covers a lot of information including a primer on CAD and some information on computer hardware I/O ports.

All in all it is a good book filled with practical information

Where's the Man's Anger??
The book was good at describing how a man may have obtained his anger and was insightful. It did lack the father who was hostile in a psychological manner through manipulation, subtle verbal abuse, and unfair treatment in comparison to other siblings. There was a mention of obvious verbal abusive but nothing on subtle abuse. What about the man who wasn't physically abused or told outright that he was a loser?? Also, the chapters on love relationships were geared toward the passive angry man and did not take into account the angry man who uses things like verbal abuse and control against his spouse. Men who are angry are often abusive themselves. The controlling man already has control over his "dominion" and the wife does not get to pick the "furniture", etc.... To an angry verbally abusive man telling him that he should have his way at home when he already has control issues will only make things worse. It is good to address the passive man who never speaks up but there was a lack of attention to the angry man who will only allow his way. Lets not go to extremes in either the Men's movement or Women's movement. Each individual is valuable. The book does not talk about how to create mutuality and work as a partner or team (compromise in decision making). It merely talks about men taking control. This book may be good for the passive man who is angry but may further enhance characteristics of the man who is the "nice" guy to everyone outside his intimate relationship and a controlling verbally abusive guy to his spouse. The book would be much better if it had addressed the issues of a mutual relationship and the extreme of being vebally abusive versus speaking up. Speaking up for oneself does not mean disregarding your partners feelings or desires. A relationship should involve both parties making decisions and compromising when there is a difference of opinion.

My dear sir, everything I do is masculine! . . .
Angry Men, Passive Men - understanding the roots of men's anger and how to move beyond it. This excellent volume is replete with personal stories, examples from real life men's support groups, and knowledgeable advice from a practicing therapist. It was, apparently, first published as "In the Company of Men."

Mr. Allen presents material here that may not at first seem new to anyone reading in men's studies these days. But the added value is in the second half of the book where, after convincing us that there are serious reasons to consider why men suppress their feelings, he gives us some ideas of how to break through the barriers. He explains how we will be able to open up to a full range of feelings if we simply stop accepting "the rules written on The Man Box" we're in.

Just as the women's movement has begun to dismantle the systemic reasons for being put in "the Woman Box," men are encouraged to review how and why we are so well indoctrinated by society to fill the stereotype of "man." We have to start at home and in the society at large to correct limiting views while saving the good aspects of being male. "What men need to do," Allen tells us, "is draw some distinctions between beliefs and behaviors they want to keep and ones they want to discard. For example, they may see that being able to hide their feelings in a poker game or in the middle of a business deal works to their advantage; there are times when it's important not to show your hand. But hiding their feelings from their wives and their friends keeps them isolated and alone."

I suppose the best recommendation, or review, of this book I can give you is to mention that I have ordered a dozen copies (from Amazon.com of course!) to give to friends and to use in my own men's group. I recommend this excellent work for any man or woman interested in learning more about the male psychology.

A guide to breaking free of deadly male stereotypes
Marv Allen provides an insightful journey through male psychology. I found the book very helpful.

Inductor Handbook
Published in Paperback by CJ Publishing (April, 1996)
Author: Cletus J. Kaiser
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

Very Basic Overview
The Inductor Handbook was a real disappointment. The information is a superficial overview of how to select inductors for basic applications. It might be suitable for a hobbyist or student but is not the caliber of information required by a modern technical professional. There is little information about the design of inductors and no information about computer modeling - crucial in today's environment. More useful information can be obtained from manufacturer's spec sheets and application notes.

The perfect reference manual
The Inductor Handbook joins Mr. Kaiser's other handbooks to expand his library of core reference manuals. Each are outstanding on their own, but taken together, provide the electronics expert a ready reference and the teacher a core curriculum on each topic.

Great reference book
This is a very good book for selecting inductors for real world applications. Highly recommended.

The Passive Man's Guide to Seduction

I almost feel bad for you people
If you bought this book hoping to learn how to pick up women by being passive, it's too late...you're not the type of guy who is going to pick up women and no book is going to fix that. Go back to your ramen noodles and your miniature figurine collection and find some good porn to keep you company. I reiterate - books will not teach you how to pick up women. If you can't do it already, nothing and no one will teach you how.

This book is satire. It's funny, get it? See, it's making fun of self-help dating books, but in an innocuous way to make you feel better about yourself for being such a passive and ostensibly nice guy. But the writing is cute, usually clever and often successful at raising a smirk. Take it for what it is and like it or not in that context.

One word comes to mind: AMAZING!
Looks like the reviewers are pretty much split down the middle on this book -- half of them think it's lame, the other half thinks it's nothing short of a masterpiece. Pencil me in with the latter group, Franklin Parlamis has hit the nail on the head with this one. To start with, it's insightful and, at times, thought-provoking. On just about every page I had to stop and think about what he was saying. Not because it was hard to grasp (that's actually part of the beauty of The Passive Man's Guide, it's an easy read), but because it was mind-opening and made me think in terms of myself and my social life. Secondly, it's funny -- downright funny. He had me laughing non-stop.

The bottom line is you shouldn't miss out on this book. It's one of the better self-help dating books that works. The advice is practical and the techniques aren't throw-aways. And you will get better with women -- with this amazing book who couldn't?

Written with real insight, razor-sharp wit.
Dating books are usually funny by default, full of lame tips that are unintentionally humorous. Finally, a manual on approaching women that doesn't insult the intelligence- this book assumes that its audience understands the value of a laugh. Meeting people isn't easy, and Parlamis mines the humor within the struggle with an easy charm. This is a manual for the shy, the tongue-tied, and the guy that wants to move up a level in the dog-eat-dog world of intersexual relations. For those that don't think that they need a manual, relax and enjoy the riffs of a shrewd observationist. For those men out there who are longing for female companionship- don't waste eight bucks for another lonely movie night alone or with the guys- read this book, relax and apply its wisdom. This book is more entertaining than Must See TV, funnier than a drunken cat, and more useful than a can opener. Put down that porno and get passive. It's not as fun at first, but pays greater dividends over the long term. Plus it's not as sticky.

Lacks Context
This book was disappointing. Although the quotations are excellent, by themselves they are little more than random sentences. Without the context of Gandhi's story, without knowing what his life and actions were all about, having a book with some words he said is practically meaningless. As I read the quotations, I found myself referring to Louis Fischer's biography of Gandhi, and Gandhi's own autobiography to find out what the quotes meant when Gandhi actually said or wrote them. When I got too lazy to look up the quote somewhere else, the words merely passed before my eyes in a way that could not be described as reading. The entire volume has an engineered, overprocessed quality because of the topical, rather than chronological or situational, arrangement of entries.

The introductory essay seemed to run on forever, but it is an interesting insight into Gandhi's motives and choices. Generally, though, it is verbose and tedious, not at all the engaging and lively reading I would hope would be associated with such a charismatic subject.

I can see this volume being useful for gathering direct quotes for a paper or speech about Gandhi, but without background information found in other materials, the meaning behind the quotes in this book will be next to impossible to understand.

In short, for general reading on Gandhi's life, find another volume. Get this only if you're looking for sound bytes arranged by topic for use as one liners.

Good, but hardly comprehensive
This is a useful book in times such as ours if you find yourself in need of a short, pithy statement on nonviolence. It is a sort of "wit and wisdom" collection, with no passage longer than a few sentences. While that certainly doesn't allow the reader any in-depth study of Gandhi's philosophy, it is useful for readers already familiar with that philosophy who are seeking simple and quick access to essential statements.

could've been longer....
...but it's a good selection of Gandhi's thoughts on the topic, and Merton's intro is wonderful.

Capacitor Handbook
Published in Paperback by CJ Publishing (January, 1995)
Author: Cletus J. Kaiser
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

Superficial coverage
OK we can't expect miracles for [this price] and 128 pages, but this book does not fulfill its promise of being a 'handbook'. It is best characterized as a 'primer' on capacitors, and not a good one at that. The treatment is very superficial with little hard data or usable reference links. Missing are any specific characteristic curves, concrete discussion of packaging, solderability (what are the soldering issues for metallized SMT polyester caps?), surface mount package styles and characteristics, inductive effects, silicon capacitors, voltage and frequency and pulse nonlinearities, safety rated capacitors, and so on. Diagrams where included are of a highly generic nature only. Also missing is a basic exemplar list of capacitor vendors and what they make - or any resource list except for a 6-entry bibliography of outdated or out of print material. It is also out of date generally (polycarbonates are discussed altho they have been discontinued for a year now). While I agree with the author that capacitors are largely 'misunderstood and misused', this book does not do much to clarify matters in a concrete way.

Great reference book
This is a great book for the design engineer. The book is unlike most on the subject, in that it covers the "real world" aspects of using capacitors. The book thoroughly covers the strengths and weaknesses of each type of capacitor as it relates to various applications. Highly recommended.

A perfect reference manual
This handbook is one of the original trilogy of electronic components by Mr. Kaiser. It pulls together in one manual the basic concepts and principles on capacitors and is an essential refernce manual for the electonics techinician as well as a core curriculum for the teacher.
