Implementation Manual for a Local Church: Planned Giving Program (Planned Gift Partnership Program Series)
Published in Hardcover by Riverview Pr (January, 1998)
Author: J. Donald Elam
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

Uniquely Targeted Inspiration and Practical Advice
This book is one in a series of three that also includes a Pastor's Manual and a committee workbook, all published by Riverview Press. (Its actual title has no colon.)

Together, the three books provide an excellent introductory overview of the subject of planned giving, especially as it applies at the local church level, along with practical advice on how to organize and conduct a local church planned giving campaign. To the best of my knowledge, this series is the only one of its kind, in addressing the unique concerns and challenges that lay church committees face when they consider conducting such a campaign.

The author of these books is uniquely qualified. Dr. Elam is an ordained minister whose interests in fund-raising arose through his involvement on the board of a church-related college, then administrative posts at two major universities, and finally through his own consulting business which specializes in nonprofit organization planned giving campaigns.

In Partnership With God: Contemporary Jewish Law and Ethics

A Heavy Read, Yet Worthy Golemic Advice
In this erudite, yet at times, funny treatise, Rabbi Sherwin discusses ten loosely related topics of Jewish scholarship. To tie them together, the author introduces the work with a "program for Jewish scholarship" quoting his mentor Abraham Joshua Heschel, "After the Holocaust, Jewish scholarship should be devoted to that which advances Judaism." The ten topics are as follows: philoshophies of law; the nature of ethics; health and healing; euthanasia; charity; repentence; parent-child relationships; bar and bat mitzvot; "the sanctity of life in an age of violence;" and the golem.

One chapter I found worthy of noting in particular is the rabbi's controversial stand on euthanasia, the rabbi approving of it under certain conditions.

Sherwin's scholarship is impressive, yet at times the sledding is heavy going. So be prepared for a heavy read, but a rewarding one.

In one concluding chapter, which is well worth the price of admission, Rabbi Sherwin provides us with the solution to our inability to recreate the golem. Citing Israel of Rhyzen, he provides us with this timeless wisdom, well worth any tribulations which the reader may have experienced along the way: "Judah Loew of Prague created a 'Golem,' and this was a great wonder. But how much more wonderful it is to transform a man of flesh and blood into a 'mensch' [a morally developed human person]."

Terrific!
This book had been recommended by a naturalist from whom I was taking an insect class and I'm really glad I bought it. The pictures (both actual photos and drawings throughout) are terrific - really clear and add a lot to the text. The book walks through everything that goes on in the relationship between plants and insects. Here are just a few of the subjects covered:
- the kaleidescope of flower forms
- self-pollination and cross-pollination
- the pollen grain
- baskets, brushes and sweeping nachines
- nectar
- insects see colors
- bee colors and flower colors
- scent and smelling
- tasting with their feet
- learning and forgetting
- keeping track of time
- evolution of the Bee dance

The writing is very easy to read for the person who is not a scientist like me but who really wants to learn more about what really goes on between insects and plants. It goes deeper than most books but the text doesn't make you feel like you need a scientific dictionary to understand it. Very cool book.

Islamic Finance: A Partnership for Growth

Authors: Philip Moore and a Partnership for Growth
Amazon base price: $170.00
Average review score:

Islamic Finance, making a headway
From small beginnings about thirty years ago, the global Islamic financial services industry was estimated to be holding nearly US$116 billion in assets in 1996. This total is growing at well over 10 per cent per annum. There are no thriving Islamic financial institutions in most of the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) countries. In addition, three countries - Iran, Sudan and Pakistan - have attempted economy-wide Islamisation of their banking sectors with varying degrees of success. In addition there are nascent demands for Islamic financial institutions in many parts of Africa, Central and South Asia. Philip Moore is very thorough in documenting the nature and spread of the Islamic financial market in the second part of the book. The author explicitly sets out to be non-judgmental in his approach "...(the book) is not intended to be a critique of Islamic finance and banking and it is aimed directly at the non-Islamic financier who wishes to acquaint himself with this industry." He has done an excellent job of that objective. In addition, by approaching the subject from a banking background, the author's meticulous treatment of the state of affairs in the Islamic financial market also provides a valuable backdrop for an assessment of the critical market to evolve. It is a job well done and the author should be commended for undertaking this vital task.

Jon Jerde in Japan: Designing the Spaces Between

A Good Read
JON JERDE IN JAPAN: Designing the Spaces Between

I highly recommend Jon Jerde in Japan: Designing the Spaces Between by Cathie Gandel (Balcony Press, Glendale, CA, 2000) for anyone interested in public architecture; working with the Japanese; and the thinking behind the best in today's mixed-use developments. Ms. Gandel has produced a highly readable book that makes sophisticated concepts accessible to the lay person while providing meaty material for the professional.

Wonderfully produced on good quality, high gloss stock, the book is chock full of illustrative material that effectively conveys the excitement of Fukuoka's Canal City Hakata. Readers do not have to puzzle over the term "wiggle wall" or strain to imagine what the "wayfinding sculptures" might look like. They can see them clearly in both the wide angle and detail shots.

Jon Jerde in Japan starts with the project's genesis in 1977 as the first mixed-use development outside one of Japan's major cities, takes it through opening day in 1996 and concludes with an analysis of its amazing popularity-over 43 million visitors to date! It also traces the development of architect Jon Jerde and his deepening commitment to creating original spaces that add something valuable to the human experience. As Cathie Gandel wrote of Canal City Hakata:

A visitor writes his or her script not only by choosing where to shop and where to eat, but also by choosing whether to see a movie, play a video game or have a drink in the Grand Hyatt lounge; walk under the overhang or out in the open; sit, stand and watch, or wander; jump in surprise at the champagne cork-popping noise of the fountains or wade into the tidal pool. Whatever the decision, the visitor is writer and actor as well as audience."

I have had such a satisfying time just reading about this "urban theater," I can only wonder what it must be like to experience it in person. This book made me want to do just that.
