great book for parents & professionals alike
When Parents Become Partners does a wonderful job of being accessible to new parents and parents-to-be, while also providing well-researched information and recommendations for professionals who work with couples. Carolyn and Phil Cowan's research following a group of pregnant couples and a control group of couples who hadn't yet decided whether to have children is fascinating, and readers will certainly recognize themselves and their friends, family among the various "types" of couples that emerge. Given the enormous transition that takes place in a couples' relationship when a child is born, this book offers reassuring, realistic information about how to survive -- or help others survive -- the change.

must read for the reality of parenting
This book is a study of 100 couples from pregnancy through their child's kindergarten years. It really put in perspective the challenges that one must meet to maintain a relationship and raise a child. It is not a how-to book (thank god) but studies of real people dealing with life. The conclusions not astonishing but interesting and occasionally surprising. I had trouble making the transition from lover-wife to mother-lover-wife and this book helped me to feel that I was not alone! A footnote: This is a scientific study, complete with graphs and charts. Although it is not dry and quite an easy read, the format might turn some people off. I still loved it!

Insightful, Entertaining, Thought-provoking
This book is a good read if you're interested in checking the 'psyche' behind a romantic relationship, yours or someone elses. There isn't any jargon or high-end analysis. It's not a heavy scientific text; the sample size is small but detailed. The book is written in a down-to-earth, familiar style with very believable couples as examples. I loved the variety of relationships shown in terms of age, time together, race, partner preferences, origin and history. There are 6 content chapters in the book (The Unconscious choice, To Commit or Not to Commit?,Setting Out, Crossroads, Conflict and Ways of Being) and the last chapter (7) is the Interviews and The Interviewed describing the process of writing the book. It's an easy and enjoyable read, not to mention thought-provoking and insightful.

Excellent book
Why Do We Fall In Love? is an excellent book for anyone interested in the psychology of choosing a partner. Various psychodynamic theories are discussed in easy to understand terminology and the book includes many fascinating case studies based on a series of interviews with couples from all walks of life. This is a fast-paced, easy, enjoyable read

Comments From a Canoeing Instructor
I have been enjoying outdoor activities for over 30 years (hiking, hunting, camping, paddling). I have canoed for 28 years and taught canoeing (flatwater, moving water, handicapped, and Becoming an Outdoors-Woman classes) for 19 years. What a boon it would have been to have had this book in the beginning.

If you are going to participate in outdoor activities with your spouse, your children or with friends, this book has much valuable information. Dr. Baird, a psychologist and highly experienced outdoorsman explains his ten relationship essentials: self-awareness, flexibility, curiosity & desire to learn, patience, cooperation, sensitivity, trust, communication, humor, love & respect for nature.

He carefully spells out the planning process for a successful adventure. This is not merely a checklist for gear but an evaluation of the people involved, their personalities, their skill levels, their expectations, and much more. Understanding these characteristics and making accommodations for them can go a long way towards having a harmonious and rewarding outing.

The author deciphers how the differences between men and women such as communication styles, physical abilities, anatomy, etc., affects their approach to outdoors activities. It is fascinating to learn how different personality types approach outdoor experiences and how they affect the dynamics of a group. If you wish to avoid the interpersonal conflicts that can dampen your experience and threaten relationships, this book is for you.

Some of the most important information of all is in the chapter on communication. The reader learns how to appropriately and effectively talk and LISTEN to the other members of a group so that the group can successfully solve problems and enjoy each others company in the process. The ultimate goal is to have a splendid experience in the great outdoors. (P.S. This info has significance in everyday activities, not just in an outdoor setting.)

My own book is filled with yellow highlighting throughout so I can quickly review the most helpful points. I also enjoy the clever cartoons by David Horsey that introduce each chapter.

A Clarividence From Carl Rogers
This book is a amazing pre-vision of what love and marriage would be in our times. The book was written in 1972 and prenonced alternatives of love and partnership that are ocurring in current days, especialy polyamory. Ones of the clarivident statements Roger had written was that " Would be a mutual acquiecence about the necessity or not of sexual fidelity in marriage. It's possible that nearly year 2000, we had reached the point in wich, throug sexual education, a couple only decide to have children when a deeply and mature affection subsists between them".

Really Is a Better Way
I bought this book out of desperation. All the others I read lead to nothing. In retrospect I realize that I was doing it all wrong -- that is why I kept ending up in shallow relationships.

I am now engaged to the most wonderful person in the world. It takes discipline not to date like the rest of the world, but the rewards are well worth it.

Bible Stories for Bedtime, and BEYOND!
A very easy read, I used this book to grasp the basic concepts of the Bible as I educated myself on the scripture. It's an easy read and summarizes the main point of each book very nicely. It's a great childrens book but also good for anyone who wants to get a general idea of what goes on in the Bible.

Chained to the Desk: A Guidebook for Workaholics, Their Partners and Children, and the Clinicians Who Treat Them

Being a workaholic doesn't just mean being a hard worker, says Robinson, a psychotherapist and professor at the University of North Carolina who has been studying people's work habits for years. It means you've got a progressively worsening addiction like any other, in which work becomes the substance you use in an attempt to meet your unconscious psychological needs. Robinson calls workaholism the "best-dressed addiction," because it's often rewarded--at least in the short term--and is seen as a positive attribute by people who don't understand the destruction it can cause. Chained to the Desk provides worksheets to help you recognize whether you or someone close to you is a work addict, case studies that demonstrate workaholic ways of thinking, and treatment methods that involve the entire family. It sheds considerable light on a topic that mental-health professionals often don't recognize--in part because, as Robinson points out, many of them are workaholics themselves. --Ben Kallen, Personal Growth editor
Average review score:

If you could only buy one book on workaholism, this is it!
This is a frightening look at workaholism (the addiction to adrenaline) and the different forms in which it manifests itself. Dr. Robinson's words will hit home if you are or know a workaholic. The book includes information on how to recognize the symptoms, the disease's affect on partners, children and co-workers as well as descriptions of workaholic company cultures, and why this disease is encouraged instead of treated. The book gives some help on steps towards managing the disease from the Workaholics Anonymous 12 step program and other programs. Like all other addictions, Dr. Robinson points out that there's no easy fix, especially since the workaholic still has to work. But the disease is as life threatening as any other chemical addiction. There are lists of resources offered including programs, books and tapes. Keep this one nearby when you need the facts.
