Entertaining, but the Bidding's a bit out of date.
In this lesser known sequel to "Why you Lose at Bridge", Simon has us follow three rubbers played by his quartet of flawed players.

"The Unlucky Expert", who always makes the "proper" bid or play regardless of whether his partner stands a chance of understanding him or responding correctly

"Futile Willie" who's desperation to be scientific and make good "trick" plays often causes common sense to fall by the wayside

"Mrs. Guggenheim", the dear old lady type who never really bothered to learn good bridge and often makes bidding decisions based on "but partner is such a good player!" and such nonsense

"Mr. Smug", the imperfect but practical player.

As can be expected, each of the hands is its own disaster and is constructed to illustrate a particular point by Simon. The misadventures of the foursome are rather humorous, but caused me to think more while I play (am i making a futile willie play here?, etc)

The problem is, this book was written more than 30 years ago, and the bidding is rather out of date. Although much of his advice is still accurate, a couple of points he make are no longer quite valid (for example, when north preempted in his partner's overcalled suit one hand, Simon asked "He raised his partner to 5 diamonds on what? Just a fistful of diamonds? Certainly not!", though many players would do just that these days.

Nevertheless, this book is quite an enjoyable read, and could very well improve you game a great deal

Great Britain and the United States: Rivals and Partners
Great Britain and the United States: Rivals and Partners summarizes the history/relationship of Great Britain and the United States in a concise format. This comprehensive book focuses on the relationship between the two countries through the historic wars, including the United States fight for independence, World War I & II, Korean War, Vietnam War and the Persian Gulf War. Various aspects of trade and politics between the two countries are discussed and their close relationship through turbulent and cooperative times is emphasized. The book contains a table of contents, a map, several photos, a chronology of events detailed in the book, source notes, further reading and an index. It contains a very "readable" format and can be used a reference book with the index or just a pleasure-read. It would be an excellent review of the history/relationship of the United States and Great Britain and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it as an excellent choice for a student doing a research paper of foreign relations.

Good devotional book
This is a great little book to help you dig into the Psalms and learn more about prayer. The verses are written for each devotional. The only thing I didn't like was that they are in the KJV. I recommend looking the verses up in an easier to read translation, but otherwise, a great book!

Great (as long as you buy it before you get the horse)
I bought this with my yearling in mind. Sad to say alot ofit is of no help to me anymore seeing as how he already knows how to lead , tie, bath and trailer. However, I wish I had it before I got him. I love the way the book is divided into weanling and yearling Chapters. Also, the book is thin and concise, which is really what you need when you want to just get a quick problem solver when you're at the barn. The progression on the lessons is perfect and also helps to check and make sure you're moving along fast enough. Even though my baby already completed alot of these life lessons I looked at the techniques anyway and found them to be very agreeable. None of them included anything rough or mean. This is not the typical horse breaking.

A joy to read
This is another in the American Girls Short Stories series about Molly McIntire, a ten-year-old girl living on the home front during World War 2. When Molly is paired up with her friend Susan to do a report on George Washington, she believes that this will be the best report ever. However, when Susan starts moving the project in new directions, Molly begins to fear that the project will end in disaster. Molly believes that doing things in a different way is always bad, but perhaps different can be better!

My eleven-year-old daughter and I love these American Girls books, and this one is just as good as the others. The author succeeds in driving home her point with a gentleness that makes the story a joy to read, even while you are learning something. The final chapter has directions for making Cherry-Nut Cupcakes, which have little to do with the story, but my daughter enjoyed making them, and I enjoyed eating them. (Actually, as a father, I do hope that they keep up with putting recipes in their new books!)

A nicely illustrated, easy-to-read text
I'm not a student of this subject, but I have taken college courses in chemistry and one in biology. I think this book is an excellent introduction to the human body and it's functions, which is an incredibly fascinating subject. The authors provide an appropriate level of detail for an general, introductory texts. The narrative is supported by wonderful 3-D visuals as well as tables summarzing essential information.

Parents As Partners in Reading: A Family Literacy Training Program for Teachers and Administrators

Parents get help while helping their children
The premise above works with this program. As part of a prison reading lab program, we were able to obtain this book of lesson plans and purchased the books in the core book lists for the lab and the visiting room. At the time I was involved we were just launching the program along with other reading programs for the inmates...which included becoming aware of one's visual difficulties. We found that inmates could develop their own programs for their visiting children, or could pass that information on to their family, and it helped the inmates with their own poor reading by getting motivated to help the children. Within weeks using visual tests, exercises and the program outlined we had inmates excited about teaching reading to others and changed their own attitudes in there GED classes.

How Senators Represent their States
This book presents the theory, backed by quantitative analysis, that a state's Senators should be considered as a pair to better understand representation in the Senate. In spite of the fact that they don't run against each other and are not even elected at the same time, Senators from the same state compete with each other to gain individual recognition for their legislative achievements. In other words, they join different committees, specialize in different areas, and generally emphasize their differences to compete for individual media coverage. They try to establish unique reputations in order to convince the voters that they are effective legislators. The author concludes that the result of this competition is better representation for states in the Senate. By focusing on different legislative areas, the pair of Senators actually represent a wider group of interests in their state.

I found the arguments in this book persuasive. Although I'm not very familiar with the regression analysis models used, I found the conclusions easy to follow without focusing too much on the math. I also enjoyed the quotes from the more detailed research, including interviews with Senate staff, surveys of newspaper editors, and news articles. In addition, the author provided many specific examples of the contrasting legislative styles and practices within Senate delegations including a discussion of New York's Senators Moynihan and D'Amato and Oregon's Packwood and Hatfield. These details clearly illustrated how Senators from the same state build distinct legislative agendas.
