Pete Wright's FETA book is excellent!
I recently attended Pete and Pam Wright's "Boot Camp" advocacy training in which their books, "From Emotions to Advocacy" and "Special Education Law" were used as part of their training. The books, as well as, the training are exceptional.

In order for parents to become effective advocates for their child, these books are essential. I would highly recommend these books (and the training) to any parent of a disabled child. Pete's added comments contained within his "Special Education Law" book helps parents better understand just what the laws are saying without all the "legaleese". And the information contained in the FETA book is outstanding as well! It includes valuable information on how to interpret and understand your child's testing scores and to know what areas your child may be struggling in. I'll be using the information I gained from these books often! In fact, I already have!

THE HELP WE PARENTS NEED!
Wrightslaw: From Emotions to Advocacy, The Special Education Survival Guide is a must have for ALL parents with a child in the special education system.
FETA helps to organize your thoughts, concerns and plan for your childs education. It gives you the ability to understand where the schools are coming from and how to build an effective relationship with the Special Education team. By doing this, you can effeectively advocate for your child. As the parent, you should be the "Project Manager" for your child as he/she makes her way through school. Through FETA you gain an understanding of HOW to do this. Special education systems and laws can at best be confusing and overwhelming, we parents need help in sorting it all out and FETA does that! We the parents of children in special education need to be equal players in the planning for our kids, NO ONE knows them like we do, and NO ONE will advocate for them like we will! FETA is an important tool in that process.
FETA also does a wonderful thing. It shows you how to organize all the mounds of paper that special education produces. I walk into meetings and seminars with everything I need at my fingertips.
FETA does someting else amazing, it helps you to understand the TESTING SCORES! Yikes, we all need help with that!
I can go on forever about this book, but I am running out of room. From special education laws, IEP's, resources, how to write effective letters, it its ALL in there! GET THIS BOOK!!

ATTENTION: ALL PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH LEARING DISABILITIES
If you have a learning disabled child, this book will become your Bible. It is an excellent resource book and it has helped me tremendously in the IEP process. My son is in the seventh grade now. I wished I had purchased this book earlier. I suggest that anyone who is going through an IEP for the first time to buy this book. There is alot of information that is not provided by the school. Alot of parents accept what the school says without question. I suggest purchasing The Complete IEP Guide: How to Advocate for Your Special Ed Child as well. These two books will enable you to become more educated in the difficult journey through special education politics. It will guide you, offer suggestions and ultimately you will feel more confident as you approach the school department to get an appropriate education for your child. Along with these books, I highly recommend getting an educational advocate. They know the laws and they can interpret the test results that seem like they are written in a foreign language. To all parents with sped kids...good luck and I wish you and your child the best!!!

Phenomenal Aid
My child had been struggling for years in school. I kept on trying ways to get him to improve his habits, but failed. Then a friend recommended this book and I gave it a try (nothing to lose). It's given me the tools to help my child develop the habits he needed to succeed. He's improved immensely. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their child's study habits.

The Best Book On The Subject
Excellent approach to a difficult problem we all face. The raising of children is difficult enough - this book cuts to the chase about how we can help our kids reach their potential in school. I've applied many techniques I've learned from the books and my children's study habits and grades have increased dramatically.

The best in the business!
I found this book to be the best source of useful tips for helping children develop good study habits. The author obviously knows her stuff and is well experienced. I can recommend this book highly.

A Must For All Working With Youngsters---From a Therapist
Dr. Marshall's book is the best educational book I have ever read. It's all about teaching how to get along and follow the rules without blaming, shaming, and making the receiver lose self esteem. While all concerned feel good about themselves, responsibility, rather than resentment, is the end result. I was one of those teachers who Marshall talks about who left the system because of the inability to practice such positive means in my school. Having taught all grades from first through graduate school, I encountered distraught children punished in inappropriate ways by faculty members.

Very practical ideas in a reasonable, rational text
Discipline Without Stress, Punishments Or Rewards: How Teachers And Parents Promote Responsibility & Learning by education and child development specialist Marvin Marshall is a highly positive guide for teachers and parents seeking to helping young people learn without putting overwhelming pressure upon them in the process. Introducing a system to help parents foster accountability and positive life skills, chapters of Discipline Without Stress, Punishments Or Rewards set forth very practical ideas in a reasonable, rational text easily accessible to lay readers. Discipline Without Stress, Punishments Or Rewards is first rate and thoughtful book, highly recommended to teachers and parents of children at all grade levels from preschool through high school.

A "Must Read" for Educator or Business Executive
As I read Marshall's book, I found myself wishing that I had had this as required reading in graduate school! There is so much to discuss, from self-awareness (i.e. whoever asks the questions controls the conversation) to classroom management to parent education. As a faculty, we chose this book as our summer reading. Everyone...and I mean EVERYONE...(approx. 25 faculty members) felt this was one of our best picks yet...and we've read some awesome books over the years! In addition to faculty discussions, we hosted a parent session to have a conversation on the parenting chapter. By and large, the parents were so excited by the stimulating conversation, that they asked for ways in which they could integrate the concepts at home! Marshall's concepts and strategies have the best interest of the child in mind. Truly a win-win...for students, teachers and parents!

A Vermont yankee's review from Texas
This book may be, for some, a short read. However, I spent time with it, finding at the beginning that I would put it down for a day or two to let the material sink in. Later on I became more involved and was less able to put it down for very long.

The battle scenes were a bit difficult to visualize, but with the diagrams they are understandable. Understanding them in detail is not essential to understanding the book.

The story is plausible, it could have happened as written. The author has given much attention to details that indicate that a lot of research was done. The fact that both whites and blacks were technically skilled and that they could be friends with each other seems imminently reasonable. Common interests often foster friendships.

Some of the early material caused me to think about what may be going on in Afghanistan. The later material helps me to understand some of the problems in this country.

I am not a student of the Civil War but I thought I had a reasonable understanding of it. This book caused me to re-think what I understand about the Civil War and may cause me to do a bit more study.

So you think you know about the Civil War?
Jack Maples has fogotten more about the Civil War than most Americans learned in school. Unlike many authors Jack writes about a subject he knows and that make it easy for the reader to enjoy the story he weaves through the real-life events of history. When you read about the Parkers you come to understand that they are driven by their loyalty to family and how the events of history impact their pursuit of freedom and happiness. Jack is a personal friend and I take this opportunity to congratulate him on a job well done. I look forward to the future books and with any luck his writings will be turned into movies that will be as entertaining and informative as the book.

A LONG AWAITED HISTORY
THE VIETNAM SCRAPBOOK 'The Second ANZAC Adventure' by Mike Subritzky. Published by Three Feathers Publishing. Reviewed by Bruce Hill for the NZSAS Newsletter "The Free Glance". This is a book that all Vietnam Veterans will want to have in their bookshelves. This book contains a brief history of all NZ Army units that took part in the Vietnam War and also the NZ Surgical Team at Qui Nhon. There are over 300 (A4) pages of text, including over 200 pages of personal accounts. There are more than 400 photographs, maps etc. The book includes lists of the Roll of Honour of the 39 dead and 200 wounded of that war, and also lists of the honours and awards presented to New Zealanders for service in Vietnam - including honours and awards presented by the Governments of USA and SVN. I found the book a very useful reference, with a good range of material.

Waikato author honoured
The Waikato Times Newspaper, 17 July 1997. A Te Awamutu author has been awarded the Distingushed Service Medal of membership by the American Vietnam War Veterans Association for his book 'The Vietnam Scrapbook'. Mike Subritzky, who wrote the book as a 150th Anniversary project for the New Zealand Army, received the medal after a contingent of 100 NZ Vietnam Veterans laid a copy of the book at "The Wall" in Washington DC in May. The names of 47,253 American servicemen and women who died in Vietnam on active service are inscribed on the wall. The book presents stories by men and women who saw action, with photos and a roll of honour. Though Mr Subritzky did not serve in Vietnam, he was 23 years in the Armed Forces.

A letter to Mike Subritzky
VIETNAM SCRAPBOOK by Mike Subritzky. "Kia Ora Mike", I have recently been reading my copy of 'The' Scrapbook...it is really something of a time machine. During a recent discussion at the local RSA (Returned Services Association) it was mentioned that Henry Rau, a private in Whiskey 2 Company RNZIR received the Cross of Gallantry (with Silver Star) apparently this was presented to him by 'Big Mhin'. This didn't ring a bell so I checked the book and see that Henry is conspicuous by his absence. This isn't meant to be a criticism, and it's not as if Henry is upset, I just thought that I would let you know in case you had recovered from your exertions sufficiently to contemplate another edition...All the best for 97, Ron R. A fine Korean War resource, easy to read
Whether you're simply curious about the Korean War, knowledgeable on the subject but looking for new details, or desperately researching a paper due in two days, FIRE AND ICE has what you need. Don't let the scholarly foreword by Col. Jessup scare you away, author Michael Varhola's style is extremely easy and free-flowing.

Varhola presents, in orderly fashion, clear descriptions of war on the ground, in the air, and at sea; battlefields; details of the military forces in the conflict; and weapons, vehicles, uniforms, insignia, and various equipment. All of the above includes black & white photographs, maps, and diagrams. A chapter on "Warlords and Statesmen" gives miniature biographies and actions of the leaders involved. Chronologies of the war are given in both the chapter "Armistice Negotiations" and in an appendix covering the war as a whole. The grim chapter on POWs deals not only with the atrocities of the time but also follows the continuing governmental conflicts over war crimes to the present day. A final chapter covers the Korean War as presented in books, on film, and online. An appendix explains military terms and acronyms, and for those who like their information boiled down into bite-sized pieces, there is a facts and figures appendix, plus the previously mentioned chronology.

If you want or need to know about the Korean War, this book is a splendid gateway.

Best Korean War Book in a Decade
Fire & Ice is, indubitably, one of the best books ever written about the 1950-53 conflict in Korea and definitely the best of the last 10 years. As a non-U.S. reader, I am often amused/annoyed at the wholly American slant given to what are, in actuality, international events. Although written by an American, this comprehensive overview of the war avoids this pitfall and contains information on the Commonwealth forces and their role in the war (along with information about the South Korean and other Allied contingents that fought in the conflict). A worthwhile read for anyone interested in the Korean war. Bully!

Varhola Does It Again
Being familiar with some of the author's other works, I tracked this one down as well. As expected, the level of detail and obvious meticulous research were as I expected. Another successful and vivid portrait of a very gripping historical period from an author who clearly knows his history. The wealth of little details interspersed throughout the mandatory historical details make this a true pleasure to read.

Great idea!
My daughter is just starting to read, is literally on her first words, so even the first hunts are a bit too hard. However, I have taken the idea and made my own hunts with snigle words she does know. Once she can string a short sentence together, then I will start using hunts from the book. She loves doing the hunts I've made for her and I can tell the whole experiment will be a reading success!

This is a small, fat book with pages that you tear out to hide for your kids. You could just make up hunts yourself, but why when the book is so inexpensive? Plus, you can use thm over and over again.

Lots of fun, and oh so educational!
I don't usually write book reviews, but this book is such a winner! My 5-1/2 year old daughter loves to do these treasure hunts as soon as she wakes up in the morning or when she returns from school. Not only is it fun, but it's educational too -- practice reading and following instructions. The sheer fun and receiving the sticker at the end of the hunt are more than enough to entice her to play. In fact, she keeps asking for more hunts! I'll definitely order more copies of this book and give them away as gifts -- perfect for 5 to 7 year olds.

An excellent, fun tool for parents to enjoy and kids love!
I stumbled on this through Children's Book of the Month Club. My son loved it from the very first...he often asks for me to remember to "make tomorrow a treasure hunt day". The earliest groups, each having four clues, include more drawings as hints. As they progress there is more word description and less picture help. The award sticker incentives have not been motivating for my son...he just loves having the challenge and feeling successful. I am sure that many children would find them a treat! The final page of each hunt includes a fun, thematic match-up game...one more skill building opportunity which challenges without overwhelming. The style and tone of the coaching and instructions are particularly calming and encouraging for those parents and children who are reading resistant, as the author's son (and co-writer) was. A real winner...I love to give this book as a gift for those beginning this age group!

The Complete IEP Guide : How to Advocate for Your Special Ed. Child

Good overview, but doesn't replace having an advocate/lawyer
This guide provides a good overview of the special education and IEP process, as well as some sample forms and letters. It also usefully collects the relevant federal statutes and regulations. But I found the descriptions of the process to be quite different from what happens here in D.C., so that ultimately its utility was somewhat limited. There is, perhaps, no solution to this -- the book can't be written for every school district in the country. So while the book is useful, in many areas you will be well served to hire a special ed consultant and/or attorney.

A Must Have Book
This book is the most complete resource that I have found. I recommend it to anyone who is entering the Special Education arena. I am a parent of a 10 year-old boy who was recently diagnosed with ADD and Dyslexia. This book helped me prepare for my IEP meeting. I especially enjoyed using the forms in the back of the book. These forms can be copied for use as letters and check lists. This book is very thorough and will walk you through the entire IEP process. This is definately a "Must Have Book"!

From a mom with a son with Tourette Syndrome
Whether you are new to the world of "special ed" or you are a seasoned veteran, attorney, Lawrence M. Siegel's book will guide you through the advocacy maze with ease. It is a valuable resource of information, including, but not limited to: an overview of special ed and the IEP process; sample IEP forms and letters; organization and planning tips; a listing of support groups, advocacy organizations and federal and state departments of education. Laws and procedures change frequently, and regulations can be different from state to state, so new editions are printed periodically. You can even take advantage of an "update service" that offers a 35% discount on any future purchases.
This is quite possibly the best resource available for assistance in navigating the path of the IEP process, so that you feel more in control of the situation. Although no published material can completely replace a knowledgeable expert or lawyer, I am now confident that I have sufficient knowledge of the IEP process to be able to be an effective advocate for my child.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!
After 4 years of reading depressing books about what to expect from my ADHD child, finally I feel like someone has given me the key to unlocking his wonderful potential. As a homeschooling parent this book is a special blessing! The first day I read it I tried writing out the word collaborate and followed the instructions to have him visualize it. (This is a 9 year old child who is a full grade level behind in spelling) He not only spelled it, he immediately spelled it backwards without missing a letter. I cried! This book will be an immense help in choosing curriculum for him, and I would highly recommend it as a must to parents of ADD/ADHD labeled children.

THIS BOOK IS A MUST, for understanding ADD, and Dyslexia
Jeffrey Freed's book was so good that I had to contact the author and thank him. His book helped me to understand how gifted some of our so-called "Learning Disabled" children really are.

The part that really got my attention was his assertion that "Right-Brained people, almost without exception, make the best speed readers (see p. 119)." You see, I am a speed reading teacher.

After reading his book, I took special effort to note how Right-Brain dominant children did in my speed reading classes (this was fairly easy, since he has questionaires on pages 48 to 50 that help identify Right-Brain dominance). The differences between the Right-Brained and Left-Brained children in my classes was amazing. Based on my experience, Mr. Freed is right on target. Right-Brained people really do make the best speed readers. Jeffrey Freed's discovery was so important that when I updated my own book (Speed Reading 4 Kids) in 2000, I needed to add a new chapter explaining these differences.

I often recommend this book to parents of ADD, ADHD and Dyslexic children so they can understand their children's different learning needs.

He was blind, but now he sees!
My precious middle son struggled through Kindergarten, first, second and third grade before struggling through the fourth grade twice. He's now in fifth grade and struggling again - in everything except math & science. He enjoys math & science and excels in these subjects. Because he attends a loving, nuturing, Christian school, he's never been labeled ADD or ADHD or anything like that. But I've been to so many parent teacher conferences where I'm told, "he's just not getting it". We've hired a professional tutor, I've spent literally 4-6 hours a night helping him with homework and still he brings home poor grades.

One day as I picked him up after school he joyfully proclaimed "Mom, I'm right brained and that pretty unusual since I'm right handed. I'm pretty special!" What magic words! I was telling a friend of mine who is going after her masters in education. She lent me this book to read. I had tears in my eyes as a read the introduction - I said that's my child, that's my child! I gave him the test with the colored circles and was amazed that he could, after looking at them only 20 seconds, tell me the sequence of the colors not only frontwards - but backwards as well. Not only that, but hours later when we were telling Dad, he still could tell the colors in sequence frontwards & backwards without another look. Not only that, the next day, he was able to correctly tell me the colors - frontwards and backwards! He said "See Mom, I can remember things!" For the first time in his life, my child is excited about reading, spelling and penmanship!

I'm so grateful for the book. It should definitely be required reading for all educators and administrators in American school systems. I agree that more and more children are right brained as our world becomes more and more visual. Right brained children are the actually leading the pack, they are what will one day soon be the norm. This is an excellent book for anyone who needs or wants to be on the leading edge of education.
