Wow What a Book
This is a short book featuring photography of Yann Arthus-Bertrand.

The book is not big but the photos are stunning. Taken mainly in the summer there is lots of green and interesting subtle shades of yellow.

Paris is a captivating city with its beautiful low buildings, the famous parks and architecture, and churches. They are all beautifully shown off from aerial views in this wonderful but all too short book.

Everyone should have a copy of this book.

Jack in Toronto

Wonderful -- like Jack said -- but not sooo "short"

I am writing mostly in response to the comments from Dr J E Robinson (Jack in Toronto). I share Jack's general appraisal that this is a "wonderful" book and "the photos are stunning."

However, I felt that Jack's references to the book's size/length ("short book...not big....all too short") might unduly discourage potential buyers. This is a magnificent book, over-sized, and filled with double-paged, marginless photographs. The page count, 183, is not great but this is not a "small" book. It comes in on my postal scale at 3 1/2 pounds! I could easily see this book priced at $40. As long as Amazon continues to offer it at $20.97, it is aa terrific value.

An extra feature of this book that I particularly enjoy is the color, satellite image on the endsheets (front and rear). This is a great image for keeping yourself oriented. I give it an enthusiastic five stars, both in absolute terms, and in acknowledgement of what seems to me an excellent value.

Couldn't put down this "Drop."
Being a big fan of Furst's more current novels, I was dubious about exploring is earlier work. My caution turned out to be unfounded. Although, the style and settings are an about face to his recent works, this is an outstanding, suspenseful, and often humorous novel. Should be re-issued, it's as good or better than anything being written today of a similar genre.

A night in the Hotel Lancaster, Paris
As an Ypma fan who loves hotels probably as much as him, I discovered this book in Thailand in the bookstore of the Sukhotai Hotel and immediately bought it.
All his HIP books gives good information and nice photos on the topics, well do not expect that from this book because you will be disappointed.
This is a beautifully shot and edited coffee table book that makes you dream of the so well known French style...but it is not a highly informative resource book on Paris Interiors. All the pictures shows the interior of one magnificent hotel, the Lancaster and they will make you wish to stay there next time in Paris.
However if you need more information on the topic there are:
-the Finest Houses of Paris
-the Mansions of Paris
-the Inside Paris : Discovering the Classic Interiors of Paris (Inside...Series).

Vivid Pictorial History of Montmartre and its Artists
This book is one of those that, if you happened to pick it up in a bookstore, very likely you would not put it down till having turned every page (as was in my case). The book is full of pictures, from black-and-white photos of the streets and cabarets of Montmartre, Moulin Rouge and Sacre-Coeur during different periods of time, and the artists in their studios (and Toulouse-Lautrec painting portrait on the street), to richly colored paintings by Renoir, Utrillo, Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, Modigliani, and many, many more. The end of the book shows detailed maps of the streets of Montmartre and the exact addresses where each of the many (now) famous artists once lived. This book will be enjoyed not only by those interested in art history, but also for just anyone with a sense of history. Highly recommended are both this book and its sister book, "Paris-Montparnasse : The Heyday of Modern Art, 1910-1940".

Nice Detail
When I made my first trip to Paris, I knew I wanted to do a lot of walking to see the sights. I picked up this book because it provides excellent detail of neighborhoods and nice tidbits of information about sights worth seeing. It's an easy book to read and helped give me a sense of where to go. Though in Paris, walking just about anywhere is a treat for anyone not familiar with European culture. This book was a good complement to the other books I had. I also found the National Geographic book to be a good choice too. My only negative comment about the book is that it doesn't help too much with keeping your bearings because the illustrations drill down a lot and you have to go back and forth to really know what section you're looking at. It could have also included information about railway stations, since these were important landmarks for me.

Complements Exile's Return
Samuel Putnam (1892-1950), best known as a translator of Don Quixote, went to France in about 1927 and lived there, with his wife and child, till 1934. He relates his encounters with Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Henry Miller, Joyce, Pirandello, and many others and the account is of interest. He talks more about art, including Picasso, than interested me, but all in all this is not a bad book to read.

Fantastic book!
Just a brilliant look at four black artists who escaped the racism of the U.S. to live and work in Paris. Very interesting?

an american in paris
i loved the way jim used traditional and free verse forms in writing these poems...when i read them, i don't notice the devices, they seem so natural...he gives a loving nod to the ghosts of hemingway, stein, baudelaire, and even jim morrison...you can see the sights in the words...read these poems and take the journey.
