An adventure in Paris...
I thoroughly enjoyed this story about a "good girl" who decided to take a few chances. She is supposed to go away with her boss for the weekend to a conference in PARIS yippee. But, then she finds out that what the boss really wants to do is get in her knickers. So she quits and then decided to run away to Paris by herself.

Fantastic story. You get to see into her mind and think about what parts of her life she is really in control of.

Sisman continues to write with a flair that makes you not only think but you feel as though you are there with the characters.

: ) : ) THIS BOOK IS THE BOMB ( : ( :
I dont usually give reviews on books, but this book was one ofthe best books I've ever read. Im fourteen years old, and I could not only understand this book, but also it instantly became one of my favorites. I love the way that Molly stands up for herself. The only thing I wish happens with this book is a sequel. This book is awesome and is in my top five fav books. It is awesome. READ IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you love Paris and love life's surprises
This is the first Robyn Sisman book I have had the pleasure to read but it won't be the last. Each hour presents a new revelation to the heroine, about Paris, about strangers, about her family, and in the end about her own character. Her love affair with the city mirrors the reaction of every 21-year-old who falls for Paris, but her transition from frumpy, staid, safe young girl to a daring, cheeky, and warm lass who embraces not only the city but strangers and life is as heart-warming as it is fast-paced. The outrageous characters she meets along the way keep the story fresh. And yet it isn't outlandish, but surprisingly familiar to one who lived in Paris as a young student 40 years ago. Ms. Sisman is a fabulous wordsmith and story-teller.

Critical Literacy in Action : Writing Words, Changing Worlds/A Tribute to the Teachings of Paulo Freire

Taking Freire into the 21st Century
The idea of critical pedagogy emerged with Paulo Freire; a Brazilian educator focused on adult education. In light of his untimely passing a few years back, this book constitutes a tribute to his work as it has been read and used in recent decades. Shor and Pari's collection of essays is a foray into the ways in which Freiere's concept of critical literacy has been extended and applied to American classrooms. These essays explore different setting for the usage of critical literacy, but generally concern adults, i.e. at a college level or within different forms of adult education. However, the implications of the ideas are manifold, and there is usage for all levels of education to be extracted from the volume.
Although this is by no means a total coverage of all the issues that critical literacy, it does enter into many nooks and crannies of critical literacy, exploring how the ideas of race, gender and class interact with its ideas, in theory as well as practice. There are also several essays that examine the political implication for the use of critical pedagogy. If you are curious about how critical literacy functions in today's society, and how it has developed beyond Freire, this is definitely a book you want to give a closer look. And even if your interest is just education in general, the ideas of Freire are compelling, and are a fresh batch of ideas, which could be used to breathe life into the American classroom.

Are we comfortable with a society that has no authority?
In light of the idea that critical literacy is ¡§learning to read and write as part of the process of becoming conscious of one¡¦s experience as historically constructed within specific power relations¡¨, this book, from a practitioner¡¦s perspective, questions how can we, as researchers or teachers or both ¡§use and teach oppositional discourse so as to remake ourselves and our culture¡¨? That is, if we have been shaped by the words we use and encounter, how can we find ¡§words that question a world not yet finished or humane¡¨, and work with the students to develop critical literacy to ¡§question knowledge, experience, and power in society¡¨?
The following chapters then offer certain innovative approaches considering how critical literacy can be ¡§done¡¨ in the classroom. A central belief that connects those chapters is that ¡§teaching is context specific¡¨, and that ¡§critical teaching is not a one-way development, not something done for students or to them for their own good¡K Rather, a critical process is driven and justified by mutuality.¡¨ I am, however, more concerned with the extent to which a teacher is aware of the replacement of status quo. In other words, how can we dismantle the old authority without imposing a new one? ¡§How and when a teacher should use authority and expertise to promote rather than to silence student agency¡¨? Are we comfortable with a society that has no authority anyway?

A Cross-Disciplanary Look at Critical Literacy in Classrooms
Overall, I found Shor and Pari's edited edition of articles discussing Critical Litearcy to be a good introduction to the variety of ways educators have chosen to implement and define critical literacy pedagogies. This book primarily looks at critical literacy in college level classes, however some mention of work with high school students is also present. I would describe this book as a thorough, though certainly not exhaustive, presentation of both theory and practice as instructors struggle to bring issues of race, class and gender into classrooms. If you are interested in critical litearcy, and curious to see how others have engaged with this topic, this book is both relevent and insightful.

Can a book by Fodor's compare with the Let's Go series?
I have ALWAYS used Let's Go for all my travels, in both Europe and the United States. So when I went to the local bookstore look at the contents of Let's Go: Paris, I also decided to look at Foder's, as well, just to make sure I was making the right choise of guide book. To tell you the truth, I wasn't impressed with the Fodor's series of books. I then logged onto Amazon.com to check out the reviews for both series (Fodor's and Let's Go) and I wasn't surprised to see that there were no reviews for Fodor's at all! Many people have given reviews to the books from Let's Go, most of them have 4 or 5 stars! If you are interested in budget travel, knowing a bit about the history of the place you are visiting, finding out where the hot-spots and off-the-beaten-trail locations are, and how to get there from the airport, train station, bus station, metro, THEN BUY LET'S GO, instead! The Fodor's series are informative and stuffy-reading, the Let's Go series is opinionated and has details that are worth reading and knowing.

Fodors 2000 - Paris
This guide was incredibly helpful in planning our 10th Anniversary trip to Paris! It gave detailed descriptions of neighborhoods, sites, lodging and dining. This book combined with internet price-shopping lead us to the best rates on the best hotels - we wouldn't have found our hotel with views of the Eiffel Tower without this guide. Highly recommend buying this book to plan your trip, set your itinerary (valuable insight as to closed days of museums, avoiding long lines, off-the-beaten path discoveries and more!)and accompany you on a first trip to the city of lights!

A Great, General Resource
We recently returned from a trip to Paris and found the Fodor's guide to be the most useful we brought. Fodor's covers a wide range of sites, restaurants, and hotels in all price ranges. While we found the Time Out guide to be more on target for nightlife, and Rick Steves to be more focused on budget travel, neither offered the panoramic scope of this guide. If I were to use only one guide book, this would be it.

OK
I read this book while I was on my vacation and I think it is exactly that sort of book :a vacation one. It is ok.

A Younger Inspector Maigret
You can compare my review to the other one on this book. OUr views are not the same.

I found this book, which I read in French while living in California, to be a delight. It takes place in Liege, in the country of Simenon's birth, long before most of the novels. And part of the suspense (for it is a suspense murder mystery) is waiting for Maigret to appear.

Eventually the large figure in his dark winter overcoat enters the story, well supplied with his pipe(s) and tobacco, his mind racing over possibilities. And we are not disappointed, even after reading countless later stories. Not only does Simenon give us a satisfactory ending, but we have a splendid picture of an almost "old world" Liege and the kind of people who lived and worked in it.

No, definitely not just a "holiday book", this. Rather, a book for all seasons. Give it a try and you will agree.

A different Maigret
Atmosphere is stranger than in others Maigret's novels. But it's also very good novel. If you have read "Pedigree" (Simenon's childhood autobiography) you can make interesting parallels between one of the two young boys and Simenon himself. It seems to say to us that the line between criminals and the other humans isn't very large ...

How to be a 40+ Fit Man
It is a fitness book to meet the needs of men in their mid-30s and beyond. The exercises in the book are good except that most requires you to be at a gym as it requires equipment - unlike Jorge Cruise's "Eight Minutes in the Morning".

The nutrition and the suggestions on how to look young are also instructive.

Perfect Book to Squash Notions of Fools
At long last, there's a book out there written for the older lifter. Here, Paris is referring to someone who's 40 or over, but he also stresses that at even younger ages, the body begins to change, and someone in their mid-30s may even start to notice diminished testosterone levels.

Unfortunately, ego and pride will keep the people who need to read this book the most from actually doing so. If you workout at a gym, chances are you'll see someone there who's not 20 or 25, oblivious to the fact that he needs to adapt his workout to meet the changes his body has undergone as a result of aging. Thankfully Paris talks about the importance of recovery---the aspect of lifting that eludes so many lifters.

Hopefully people will keep an open mind and read this book as they move through their 30s. When I was in my late 20s and early 30s, Paris' "Flawless" was a challenging workout. Now that I'm older, there's no way I could endure that rigorous a workout and get the results I did back then.

The key to remember is, that if you adapt your workouts to your age, they'll be more productive and you WILL see better results than someone who's only fooling himself by trying to fool his body.

"Realistic" fitness with solid advice
How refreshing to read a fitness book that doesn't pander to the "chiseled chic" set, or promise 20 inch biceps in 20 hours.
Paris's "PRIME" is exactly what it bills itself as: a realistic approach to fitness (physically, mentally and nutritionally) for the 40 year old man. The book copiously details goal setting as a necessary step prior to commencing a well thought out fitness program. Bob also details three variations of fitness programs for the beginner or more advanced individual, and allows room for variations for those of us with more than a passing familiarity with the weight room. The nutrition section is incredibly detailed, and is a very valuable resource for people interested in sensible balanced eating as opposed to "diet-of-the week" trends which seem to dominate best sellers lists.
The book contains very nice photographs which, suprisingly, illustrate practical, attainable results, as compared to the oiled, steroid-inflated image most publishers try to sell us on.
I threw away a pack of Marlboros after reading page 40 of this book.
This, like any other fitness guide, isn't going to supply "instant motivation" for those who can't see their way into the gym. For those of us who have made workouts an important (and neccesary) part of our lifestyle, however, Bob Paris has supplied us with a genuine gem - solid advice, practical exercise, smart nutrition, and direct motivation. This is a 5 star thank you to him.

description about life during the french revolution in Europ
this book is very difficult to read. you need to have a lot of patience, for it takes about 100 words for Dickens to make a point in his book. the story is very well written and the descriptions about life in london and Paris at the time of the French revolution are well depicted. I just think that Dickens needed to speed up his novel, and probably it would have had a better succes.

A very moving, emotional book
This book is truly wonderful! I admit that when given the assignment to read this for my college novel class, I was a little turned off, but once started, it is magnificent. Dickens was told when he was starting out his career in writing to "Make em laugh, make em cry, make em wait" and he certainly employs this tactic. It is really one of the most superior classics!Read it, I know you'll love it!!!

I loved it!
I would recomend this book from any teen to adult. I first read this book as a freshmen in high school and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This was my third time reading it and I couldn't put it down. You get into the life of all of the characters and you go through their happiness and pain.

A mixed resource
Lots of quotations in this book -- many too short or of dubious distinction to include in a wedding ceremony (do you really want to quote a TV or movie character in your wedding?? I don't). The material unique to this volume seemed as if it would be much more useful as humorous or thoughtful snippets to use in the wedding program or toasts. The poetry and short readings are largely selections that you can find elsewhere (many of them the usual suspects), so the real contribution of this book is in the more popular cultural references mentioned above, if your sensibility tends that way.

The thematic/contextual organization is strong and fairly comprehensive -- covering not only the ceremony, but also other kinds of "words" performed at a wedding, such as toasts. I'd suggest using this book with a more substantive and original anthology, such as Into the Garden.

From Romantic to Raucous...
After I read a lot of these type of books in preparation for my own wedding, I selected this one because of its wide range of time periods, subjects, and types of quotes and selections. Words for the Wedding is perfect if you're interested in a good read with lots of fun, inspiring, or romantic shorter selections for incorporating into other places such as programs, favors, personal vows and toasts. I will admit though, that I did not like many of the longer pieces as much as the shorter ones.

Really useful
This is a great book; packed with a huge variety of quotes, poems, excerpts. Perhaps my one complaint is that many of the quotes are too short to be used as readings, if that's what you're looking for. But overall the book uses a wide range of creative sources (movies, love letters, poetry, plays, etc.) and will give you lots of ideas and starting points for elements of your own wedding.

A Pleasing and Diverting Tale
Noted sci-fi author Sheckley revisits the mystery form in this pleasing PI story. Middle-aged ex-hippie Hob Dranconian has settled down in New Jersey after spending the last 20 years running around the world enjoying life and dealing drugs to the funseekers of the world. This book finds him trying to track down some stolen sailboards in Spain via his Ibiza office, and trying to locate a missing old friend in Paris. Sheckley sets off down these two paths with solid plotting, amusing characters, and a clear sense of making sure all is not as it seems. It's a nice quick read, I'll definitely be checking out the sequel: Soma Blues and prequel: Draconian New York.

The Alternative Detective by Robert Sheckley
This is the second book in Sheckley's Hob Draconian series. It features a hilarious scene in a French taxi with a French poodle who is smarter than one of the passengers! Sheckley's series is witty, urbane, and filled with the kind of small touches only an experienced writer can deliver. If you are looking for "something different" in the mystery category, you won't go wrong with this!

A great resource!
This book met a lot of my expectations by being very portable, very well-illustrated, and full of good descriptions of the merchandise one is likely to find in London and Paris flea markets. "Antiquing" is a very visual experience for me, and having plenty of photographs to whet my appetite for the various shops was a real plus. The book was useful too in helping me plot which days to attend which markets. Even if the merchandise changes and vendors sometimes move, there is enough general information that stays constant for this to be a useful guide for several years. The two-for-one format--London and Paris in one book--is also fun. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the maps could have been better. Otherwise, a great resource!

Adventurous Shopper's Delight!
Antique and Flea Markets of London and Paris is a book serious shoppers will love. While spending several summer months in London, I have visited a number of the markets described. The authors are right on target, and the photos are enjoyable. I learned about many features I've missed, and read about several new places to try on the next trip. The book realizes that shoppers are people, not machines, and tells a little about the market's surrounding area, especially places to stop for a snack and a rest.

I'm not as familiar with Paris, but if the Paris section is even close to being as accurate and useful as the London section, it will save shopping time and hassle across the channel, as it will in London.

This is not "the" book for your trip if you need a complete guide book. If you like antiques and markets, however, you will love this book.
