GREAT BOOK!This is one of the best fiction books I have read in a long time...it breaks all the "formulas" and makes me ask questions I thought I knew the answers to. It was entertaining, emotionally engaging, and blew me away. I liked the humor, the "twists" and the characters. This is one everyone should read.

a fresh view of gothicthere are times when someone from another discipline discovers things about a period that those who know it in too spepcialised a way can not do. This book examines how chruches were built from the experience of an architect who understands how stonework is put together.
He actually identifies where the idea for tracery was evolved, watching it unfold in a series of windows. Extraordinary.

Quintessential Lectures on Psychoanalytical TechniqueGrounded in her theoretical framework of the human need to create a 'glorified self' to rise above one's basic anxiety, these eleven posthumously published lectures by Karen Horney are penetratingly powerful and incisive. As with many of Horney's writings, the reader will find himself (or herself), both as therapist and patient, resonating deeply with Horney's diverse descriptions of the patient-psychotherapist relationship. Without using the classical jargon of psychoanalysis, Horney remains consistent and true to her grasp of the life and death battle between neurosis and healthy growth. Bernard Paris does his usual excellent job of chronicling the various essays and lectures, as well as organizing Horney's own theoretical development; but it is Horney's writings, themselves, that ring clear - it's not easy to learn the truth about oneself; it is a lifelong process that requires great tenacity, endless self-searching, and ruthless honesty - and no one can do it but the patient herself.

Simply brilliantI started reading this book with little prior knowledge of the beat movement and authors. I also didn't expect much from the book, thinking that it would probably be a rather academic piece of writing. And what a pleasant surprise it turned out to be! The book was so gripping that I finished it in a few days, reading long passages at a time. It covers the rise to prominence of the dramatis personae of the beat movement (focusing on Kerouac, Ginsberg and Burroughs), giving enough information on their backgrounds to facilitate an understanding of how this influenced them and their writing, but does not dwell on unnecessary minutiae in the process. All the information is presented in a concise and remarkably readable manner. The author points out the foibles of the beats, but is not too judgemental, leaving it to the reader to come to his own conclusions.
But the best thing about this book is the way the author links events and people in a witty, intelligent way without falling into the very beat trap of being pretentious. It can serve as an example to all authors wishing to write an intelligent, accessible work of non-fiction.

Best poet I ever heard speakI was stationed at the Pentagon in the early 80's. I had the pleasure of listening to Mr. Hazo read some of his poetry at No. Va. Comm. College. It has stayed with me to this day. Sadly, I have lost an autographed copy of To Paris I purchased that evening. If you have never read his poetry please do. I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I have.

Nadine Frey's guide to Paris is smart and well informed. Frey knows the city well, from its newly refurbished facades and parks and its renovated Louvre to its chaotic economy and divided politics. She knows her restaurants equally well. Rated by value and price, listed by name, arrondissement, and cuisine, there are over 100 Parisian restaurants described and reviewed. Add to that a similarly thorough treatment of accommodations, sights, and shopping, Paris for kids, and Paris after dark, excursions and the travel basics of money, visas, and getting around, special events, tipping, and public restrooms, and you get a compact, comprehensive, and accomplished accompaniment to a Parisian holiday. --Stephanie Gold

The absolute bestThe smallest, lightest, and most densely informative guide to Paris --- nothing currently in print comes close to matching this. A pity it hasn't been kept in print. In addition, it is extremely well-bound and a tough little volume that shows no wear after 4 years of travel to Paris.

This was the only quick-reference guide I neededI'm truly hooked on the Tripbuilder books for travel. The color-coded and numbered keys to areas of interest, the map of the city, and the guide to the metro, as well as various tips on things to see and do all contribute to an amazing experience. Paris doesn't need to be "sold" as a tourist destination, but this book contributes so much to giving the visitor a better appreciation of what the city offers (as if that's possible!).
The historical annotations provided the much-needed perspective on the significance of everything we were seeing.
I especially liked the occasional bursts of humor that had me guffawing, and that added to the whole experience. Thanks for including the tip on going to the rooftop of the Samarataine for a panoramic view of Paris. We did just that, and enjoyed ourselves so much we stayed for two hours --- and all it cost was a glass of wine and capuccino.
If you're staying home but wish you were Jamaica-bound, cook up one of the many recipes offered. As you're preparing your meal, fix yourself one of the tasty island cocktails featured!
