Classic Book for Serious Readers
This book is a classic in its field. No matter if you are a student of semiotics, architecture in general or church architecture, this is a must read. The causal reader should have some sense of what the discipline of semiotics encompasses prior to reading this book. The best book for the subject matter presented.

fine Brett effort
Simon Brett now returns to the extraordinary character who made him famous: Charles Paris, the usually out-of-work actor who on occasion imbibes a little too much and who detects even better than he acts. A Series of Murders finds Charles gainfully employed in what he hopes will be the long-running Stanislas Braid television series based on some rather dated 1930s novels. Charles is booked for three highly paid months as Sergeant Clump of the Little Breckington Police Station, foil to the suave detective Braid, a disciple of the School of Lord Peter Wimsey. Russell Bentley, a wooden and egotistical leading man who always plays himself, stars as Braid, and an impossibly bad actress, Sippy Stokes, is "absolute death" as Stanislas Braid's naive young daughter, Christina. Television sitcoms hardly require Shakespearean training, but Sippy is so awful she may ruin the show. Fortunately for the series but sadly for Sippy, Charles discovers the young lady crushed to death beneath a props case when he wanders into the props room (on his way to the bar) early in the shooting schedule. Charles knows that many people had cause to dislike Sippy or to wish her gone, but murder would seem to be an extreme way to terminate anybody's contract. Simon Brett is in very fine form here

Suspenseful, beautifully written, splendid character portrayals. One of the best descriptions of Paris I have ever read - it's magical! Don't miss this book!

Alicia Drake Really Knows What She's Talking About
I'm impressed. As someone who often shops in Paris, I was amazed that Alicia Drake tells it like it is. Her descriptions of the merchandise at particular stores is dead-on and lively; she's not afraid to call a store overrated (& she's right!) This book makes it easy to plan a shopping trip to Paris since she goes by neighborhoods and describes each store as though you were walking down the street with her. Her recommendations also include descriptions of Parisian neighborhoods and some interesting eating options - mostly for lighter meals, with a strong emphasis on tea houses. Unlike the Born to Shop series (w/ its annoying, snobby/cloying cuteness), she discusses shops in all price ranges, in a clear writing style that allows you to decide if a particular shop is for you.

I hope she turns this into a series.

A magical heartfelt masterpiece.
I have just re-read this book 15 years later and it still holds up as one of the most magical, whimsical books I have ever read. The characters, Sunny, Buster and Masefield, stay with you long after you close the book and that is why I needed to re-read it all these years later and it still holds up as one of the most heartfelt books I have ever read. I was shocked to find out that it was out of print. Please find it and read it. It's story will touch you and remain in your heart.

The Best Book
I read this book a while back, so I don't really remember any details. I've been trying to find another copy, and it really is a shame that it has gone out of print. In any case, I do remember that this is one of the best books I've ever read. It's light reading, no more than 100 pages, but the message it conveys is deep and touching. This is a story about a mute boy who must earn himself a living using his own unique ways of expression, while holding himself up against those who make his life miserable. A wonderful book.

A "must" for any family with children bound for vacation
Simon is a bird and Barklee is a dog. Together these two great friends embark upon a wonderful adventure traveling to France and meeting a series of remarkable and memorable characters. David Scherer's delightfully entertaining text is laced with factual information about France, while Kara Richardson's superbly executed artwork is a perfect support for the storyline. Simon & Barklee In France is an enthusiastically recommended addition to school and community library collections -- and is a "must" for any family with children bound for vacation or business travel in France!

excellent book on 19th century intitutional history
Garb does an excellent job of placing art produced by female artists within the context of the institutional history of the Union des Femmes Peintres et Sculpteurs. She explains how this organization relates to the work women artists produced and that the Union provided a much needed exhibition venue for women artists. Especially interesting is Garb's work on female nudes that women exhibited in the Salon des Femmes and the types of nudes that women artists produced for this specific context.

Published in Confession d'Amour
As an avid collector and fan of erotic literature I have found many examples of these books published under different titles and as multiple books....

This one is a prime example as it is also included in a 2 book volume Confessions d'Amour .... the book is great and I reccomend you by them both in one volume .. below is my review on these 2 books In contract to Victorian English writings the plots and sub-plots are much more complex and character development of the French seems paramount ...

There are two books in this novel .. The first secrets d'amour deals with Armand and Madelaine the wife of one of his friends. When one evening Madelaine brushes against him in a more FRIENDLY way than he expected the erotic story unfolds ....

The second book souvenier d'amour deals with Marcel and his love for the virginal Dany and the very beautiful but engaged Gabrielle ....

The story is complex and bawdy enough to have re-reading it many many times ...

Buy it before it goes out of print !

A review of the history of the scientific press
Selected in 2003 for the American Philosophical Society's prestigious John Fredericks Lewis Award, Specialist Control: The Publications Committee Of The Academie Royale Des Sciences (Paris), 1700-1793 by James E. McClellan III is a unique study of that point in the history of science when scientists first gained control over the publication of their research findings. A review of the history of the scientific press, specifically in the eighteenth century and concerning the remarkable Paris Academy of Sciences, brings to light a turning point in the way mankind would view the world and disseminate information gleaned through methodical inquiry. No academic library History of Science collection can be considered complete without the inclusion of Specialist Control!
