Road Back to Paris
Published in Audio Cassette by Books on Tape ()
Author: A. J. Liebling
Amazon base price: $72.00
For 28 years the work of A. J. Liebling embodied and perfected the personal-experience style of journalism that made the the New Yorker magazine famous. In 1939, the magazine sent Liebling to Europe to report on World War II. He filed dispatches from France, England, and North Africa that brought home to American readers the war's air raids, prisoner-of-war camps, and the emotional realities of life for soldiers and civilians. In 1944, the dispatches Liebling filed were collected and published together in The Road Back to Paris in what has become a classic chronicle of the war and of a "world knocked down."

"The New Yorker" does WW II- a vivid, personal account
The only reason this book is a "9" is because "10's" are reserved for the likes of Melville, Shakespeare, Bo Derek, et. al. This is a must for anyone who enjoys reading history. It is an account of World War II from the fall of Paris through the days when the U.S. entered the war and the tide began to turn. Fleeing Paris, Liebling treats the reader to a transatlantic trip aboard a Norwegian tanker and then back to the war in North Africa. Throughout Liebling maintains a witty, humane tone and devotes himself to accounts of day-to-day life among pilots, soldiers and citizens. Libling's writing is vivid and conveys to the reader a sense of "being there"

THE guide book for Paris
Strange that there aren't any reviews for this guide yet. This is the key to a good Paris vacation. The routard people constantly look for new budget places and update their guide. They give you a great run-down in every section of paris of what to see and what to skip. There's even a french-english food dictionary in the back to help out with those impenetrable dinner menus. (this is the english version of the guide french people use when they visit paris).

right on!
Sandra's description of our hotel (Hotel Residence Monge) was exactly on the mark. Friends have used her books for other cities and found her views accurate also. I would not go to Europe again without first consulting Sandra!

A Useful and Enjoyable Book for Paris Lodging and Shopping
Paris is a challenging city when it comes to lodging. Hotels abound, but are they any good? And hotels are usually crowded, so if you don't like yours, you might be stuck. Fodor's is some help, but its reviews are short. This book spends the better part of a page on an average review, and some are longer. Prices are up to date and evaluations are accurate. The book is arranged by District, so once you know about where you'd like to be you can research in detail. I do wish, however, that she would mention hotels she didn't like that she saw, because there are many hotels one encounters while in Paris and it would be nice to know why she didn't pick the ones she didn't. A minor complaint, however. A good bonus is her inclusion of many more hotel web sites than Fodor's. And believe me, most of the decent hotels have sites with photos and info, as well as reservation capabilities. Be sure to follow her advice to use email or fax to confirm and get your confirmation in writing. She also addresses shopping and does a good job. We went to some places she like and were pleased.

A very unique and interesting way to look at the PPC
I found it be a very unique and interesting look at the Paris Peace Conference. History is dry and clinical until you put a face on it. Clifford Lovin has done that here. I will never look at the PPC the same way.

A MUST HAVE IN YOUR EROTIC LIBRARY ....
I have this edition and knew it would be out of print ...

The first book 'School Life In Paris' in this 2 book volume has been re-published in April 2000 and I have reviewed it .....

The secod book doesnt look like its been re-published so I will reveiw it for you when or if the volume comes out ....

Here is my review of 'School Life ....' I have the 1970 Grove Press edition of this novel and immediately bought the April 2000 edition from Amazon.

The newer papebacks though come up short since the 1970 edition includes illustrations by Tomi Ungerer and they are Victorial style etchings that are HOT HOT HOT!

The book consist of a series of six letters written by Blanche to her friend Ethyl describing her introduction to a Victorian finishing school. Yes the girls are very very young but they are doing what they secretly, and, perhaps, on occasion, not so secretly, enjoy. Certainly this is what I would imagine most men conjure up in their minds when they think of lesbian sex ... It is so so so delicious .....

You gotta get this book before it runs out of print ....

Science and Immortality: The ±Eloges of the Paris Academy of Sciences (1699-1791)

What is Science? Who is a Scientist?
Charles B. Paul, "Science and Immortality". Berkeley: Univ. of California Press, 1980. Chapter title: "The Scientists as Stoic Sages," p. 106: "Indeed, the moral qualities and the scientific activities are so entwined in the eloges as to lead to a veritable symbiosis. Natural science made men free if they knew the truth that it gradually disclosed and it made men philosophical if they engaged heart and soul in the pursuit of that truth. And in the process of elucidating that truth--by following such principles as noncontradiction, efficient causality, and identity, by employing such devices as Occam's Razor, mathematization, precise observation, and arduous experimentation, and by discarding all forms of untested beliefs--they sacrificed wealth and position. Nevertheless, Roger Hahn commends the Paris Academy of Sciences for permitting such disagreements to be aired in publice. To decide by a majority vote which position was correct was absurd, for all the scientists firmly believed that truth was determined by nature and not by the will of men." [Emphasis added]

Chapter title: "The Moral Philosophers of Nature," p. 99: "Whatever is provenance--whether pastoralism, Stoicism, Humanism, Enlightenment humanitarianism, or Plutarchan biography--the message conveyed in all the eloges publicly delivered at the Paris Academy of Sciences between 1699 and 1791 is incontrovertible. It is that science is not so much a natural as a moral philosophy, less a lesson in the acquisition of right knowledge than a lesson in right conduct.

[If to decide by a majority vote is absurd, then allowing the highest ranking to decide must be at least as absurd. If you believe that the decision of a high ranking person is correct merely because of that person's social or military rank, then you are not a scientist. It is clear that to be a scientist you must first believe that Nature is not just the final authority but the only authority. To be a scientist you must also believe that Nature's answers are revealed by experiment. Beliefs in other authorities are directly contradicted by the beliefs required to be a scientist. [A "scientific" experiment must be replicable and public. "Public" means it has to be visible to everybody. Things that happen in one person's mind are not public. "Replicable" means that anyone [with the required skill, resources, etc] must be able to repeat the experiment and get the same result.]

It follows that Science by its very nature directly contradicts any and all religions Except the belief in mathematics and Science [M&S]. Conventional religions believe in the Revealed Word from some text and some prophet [authority], directly in contradiction to believing in Scientific experiment. Religious epiphanies are private, not public. They cannot be observed and recorded by scientific instrumentation since they take place inside the mind of the prophet or apostle.

Published in Confessions d'Amour
As an avid collector and fan of erotic literature I have found many examples of these books published under different titles and as multiple books....

This one is a prime example as it is also included in a 2 book volume Confessions d'Amour .... the book is great and I reccomend you by them both in one volume .. below is my review on these 2 books In contract to Victorian English writings the plots and sub-plots are much more complex and character development of the French seems paramount ...

There are two books in this novel .. The first secrets d'amour deals with Armand and Madelaine the wife of one of his friends. When one evening Madelaine brushes against him in a more FRIENDLY way than he expected the erotic story unfolds ....

The second book souvenier d'amour deals with Marcel and his love for the virginal Dany and the very beautiful but engaged Gabrielle ....

The story is complex and bawdy enough to have re-reading it many many times ...

Buy it before it goes out of print !
