Le Livre Indispensable
This map book is called "indispensable" on its cover--a description I found quite apt when I lived in Paris for a year, and later when I visited as a tourist.

Used by the Parisian police department, Paris par Arrondissement is like the Thomas Brothers map book for Paris. It breaks down the city's 20 arrondissements--or sections--into 20 easy-to-read maps.

At the beginning of the handy map book, there's an alphabetical list of "rues" that gives each street's start and finish--as well as the various arrondissments it passes through according to addresses. The index also names the most convenient metro (subway) stations for each area.

Metro lines and stops are clearly marked on the maps of each arrondisement. The book also includes a map of the entire metro system. Even a metro novice can find the way on Paris's well-conceived metro with this book.

The book is, of course, written in French. However, you don't need to speak any French at all to make sense of it.

Paris is a wonderful walking city, and this book makes its charming streets easy to stroll--without fear of getting lost! Locating museums and restaurants is a breeze with the help of this map book, even for those of us--like myself--who do not have a good sense of direction.

All I Ever Wanted To Know About Paris Sewers
It's really hard to find information on paris sewers, whether it be on the internet or in books. Donald Reid's 'Paris Sewers and Sewermen' explains the history, neccessities, and the realities and representations of the sewers. I found everything I needed. The book also has many allusions to Les Miserables, and Dante's Inferno.

A Great Guide to Paris
After having enjoyed Michelin guides for years, I believe that this is a better buy. It contains much (if not all) of the same information in a layout that is easier to use and in a typeface that is easier to read. It takes you through sights, attractions, restaurants, and bars in a logical street by street manner. Saves lots of time in planning. I recommend it highly.

This book is a treasure!
I have a deep love for this book. Several years ago, I was disgusted with religion and felt that all preachers were like the crooks and emotional exploiters who ran my church at the time. Then I was hanging out with a number of Bahais and reading a lot of their literature, including this precious book. This book really helped me to see that true religion is about the upliftment of humanity as well as love of God and that real religion was not opposed to use of the mind. While I never became a Bahai, I still associate with a number of them and this book maintains a treasured place in my room.

Excellent, Brief Guide to Historical Paris Architecture
This little atlas is an excellent introduction to the history of Paris architecture, from early Roman-era settlements to the 1960s. The numerous maps and illustrations show its architectural development at every step. An hour or two spent perusing this book will give the first-time visitor a very useful grasp of the city's layout and how it grew up that way. Read it before you go.

A Godsend for people with no sense of direction
I purchased this book prior to my trip to Paris. It contains detailed maps for most of popular areas of Paris, and also includes a little bit of information about the famous landmarks. I carried this book with me everywhere and it helped tremendously in finding every address I was looking for. Another nice thing about it is that it is small and easy to tote around. A must for anyone who gets lost easily!

Paris through female eyes
Profusely illustrated and painstakingfully researched, this book is an enlightening account of women who between wars found their self and their own voice in Paris. Though mostly concerned with the stories of lesbian or bisexual women such as Colette, Gertrude Stein, Alice Toklas, Sylvia Beach, Djuna Barnes and Natalie Barney who came to the City of Light attracted by an aura of unbridled freedom missing in their places of origin, this book will appeal to all those who are interested in this fascinating early period of the twentieth century as well.

Paris as archetype
Implicitly taking his start from Benjamin's sketches of Paris as the "capitol" of the 19th century, Harvey analyses the elements that transformed Paris from medieval labrynth to modern bourgeois metropolis and the corresponding effect that this had on all levels of the class structure, men and women, and the spatial geography of the city itself. He starts with Balzac and Baudelaire, as all such studies must; but quickly moves out of literature and into history, looking at the changes in the city geography begun by Hausmann. Harvey uses his familiar metaphor of changes in geography as a symbol of the changes wrought by modernity. Excellent, pointed read for those interested in Paris and French history, urban development, and the effects of capital on capitols. Great bibliography too!
