Belles lettres indeed!
Peter Wollen co-wrote one of my five favorite films of all, Michaelangelo Antonioni's, The Passenger, which is enough to give him pantheon status in my eyes. However, he is also the author of the terrifyingly influential, Signs and Meaning In The Cinema, which, thanks to Wollen's lucid prose style, is a lot less intimidating to read than the prose of his many imitators. This collection of recent writings on film on subjects as varied as William Burroughs and Howard Hawks is as pleasurable, illuminating and provocative as his classic film studies text. Although the essays were written over a period of ten years, they all have an immediacy thanks to Wollen's blend of wit, thoroughness, and insight. The essays on Blade Runner and video art are particularly timely. A perfect gift for both the serious general reader or the cinephile.

Although stereoscopic views--the first 3D images--were invented by English physicist Charles Wheatstone, they didn't catch on until their debut in Paris in the 1850s. The City of Light has been an inspiration ever since to amateur and professional photographers with a taste for hyperrealism. Paris in 3D, which comes with a pair of red-and-green plastic lenses and a cardboard viewer, offers a grab bag of Parisian subjects from the past 150 years, ready to snap into eye-popping focus. This is a fantastic variety show, with everything from aerial perspectives, architectural monuments, and eye-witness views of famous historical events to advertising imagery, vintage nudes, and contemporary art projects.

The authors discuss technical aspects of the various 3D processes in enthusiastic detail. You're probably familiar with holography, but how about anaglyphs, line screen and lenticular systems, photo-sculpture and auto-stereograms? In recent years, computer-generated 3D imagery helped design the new Météor line on the Métro and made possible a Web site allowing subscribers to create figures who roam specific Parisian districts. But technology is just part of the story. The text also surveys public attitudes (largely disapproving in the early days, when pornography was rampant) and muses over the continuing allure of this form of trick photography.

Even if philosophical discussions and explanations of how things work make your eyes glaze over, the photographs themselves are, as the Michelin Guides say, "worth the trip." From glimpses of the Paris Commune barricades of 1871 to an advertisement for a massage school for the blind, this is a hugely inclusive portrait of Paris, at once lofty and banal, cultured and crass, steeped in history and living for the moment. --Cathy Curtis

A Treat From the Front Cover to the Last Word!!
I received "Paris in 3D" for Christmas and what a wonderful surprise! This book is exciting before you even open the front cover. The front of the book has a beautiful lenticular of the Eiffel Tower. But the wonder does not stop there. Each page reveals beautiful 3-D images which can be viewed with the viewers enclosed in the book. The paper is high quality and the reproductions are gorgeous! As if this weren't enough, the book is engrossing and full of interesting information. I have been interested in 3-D photography for six years. This is the kind of book that I would be comfortable recommending to anyone who loves beautiful, well produced books, regardless of their knowledge or interest in 3-D photography. It is truly a collector's item that the whole family would enjoy viewing.

Paris Under Siege
Lavishly illustrated, this book tells a remarkable and little-known story about how denizens survived the Siege of Paris at the height of the Franco-Prussian War (1770-71). It looks at the war through the eyes of the artists who recorded it, and of some who even fought in it. Privileged artists like Degas, Manet, and Regnault suited up and mounted the ramparts, even as they recorded the struggle of day to day life with their charcoal and paint brushes. We encounter other artists--Courbet, Puvis de Chavannes, and Rosa Bonheur--who each served France in his or her own way.

Clayson is an excellent writer and storyteller. In her book, we encounter the endless bread lines, the staving masses who grew so hungry that even the elephant in the zoo was slaughtered and devoured; what role innovations in public lighting played, mail being sent by carrier pigeons that soared above the Prussian troops surrounding the city. Clayson is always sensitive to the role that gender plays in French culture, and we learn how gender roles were challenged during this stressful time. Vividly anecdotal and highly learned, this is the first book to explore the subject of life and art in Paris during one of the most critical moments in French history. A must for anyone interested in Paris or French art and history. And a pleasure to read.

Supergun review by a famously dead engineer
Supergun-obsessed engineer Gerald Bull co-wrote this book before being assassinated by Isreali Intelligence for his Iraqi involvement. Two thirds of the book is a study of the huge guns constructed in France during WWI. The remainder is a discussion of Bull's own HARP program in the early 1960s. The first part is accompanied by B+W photos, while the latter has color photos of the modern equipment & testing. There are also lots of graphs and technical formulae. Probably an important reference for anyone studying this technology.

This is the best book I've ever read
I just loved this book. I couldn't put it down.
The book is about Djuna's life in France and her grandfathers life in the past. There are some great twists to the story that will leave you shocked. If you love a book that keeps you wondering what will happen next, then this is the one for you.
I hope that Adreana writes a sequel to this book soon.

And from a personal experience, its true that, "Paris never leaves you".

Paris Nights
The Kelly Blake Teen Model series was among the best series of books I have ever read before I actually became a teenager. They inspired me to be who I wanted to be and made me a better person all around. I was not much of a reader when I was younger until I picked up these books.

I just finished reading the e-Book. I found it to be one of Ludlum's best books lately. He is back to his old form. The story held my attention and interest with all the twists and turns. The action is great. I highly recomment this book for anyone who has read Ludlum before and for anyone who wouold like to try him for the first time.
