Beautiful gift book!
This small, perfectly lovely book is an excellent gift for anyone who is planning a trip to Paris as well as for those who have visited this beautiful city.

I purchased this book for myself while in Paris at the Musee D Orsay. I wished so that I had purchased an additional copy for a friend. I was more than surprized to find this little gem of a book available through Amazon.com.

On every other page is a lovely B&W photograph of an important historical sight; opposite, of that photo, is a very concise history of the monument, museum or cafe.

This, unlike similar coffee table books, is simple, unpretentious and perfectly lovely. This is a true find for those with understated tastes.

Even Marie Antoinette Could Have Learned A Thing Or Two...
...from this charming and educational book. I purchased Paris 1789 from the Louvre Museum Shop during my visit to Paris. Marie Antoinette and the French Revolution have long been my passion. I thought this book may explain my passion to my children. I determined to read the book to them as soon as I came home but...I was sitting on the Metro when I decided to flip through the book. I read the entire book from cover to cover (and missed my stop). Although this book is designed and written for children, its engaging layout and fascinating tidbits make it enjoyable and educational for adults. I love that it is presented as a real travel guide. The travel tips, at the top of the pages, are hilarious! "Look for plays by Moliere - one of France's best comic playwrights" and "Hold on to your purse. Pickpockets often work in the crowded streets." Some things never change!

Paris a Guide to Recent Architecture
Published in Paperback by Artemis-Aidc (June, 1995)
Author: Barbara-Anne Campbell

Love that pyramid!
Paris is bursting with modern architecture, from grand projets of successive Presidents, Mayors and other public authorities, to smaller, more intimate and local projects.

This book is a lovely exposition of some of the most interesting (if not always beautiful, or welcomed) architecture of the past couple of decades.

The black and white photograps enhance the text and add great mood. The text is interesting, sometimes very opinionated (you probably won't agree with all the opinions - but it will perhaps challenge some of your assumptions).

Discover how, after heavy criticism of the then proposed glass pyramid and massive underground entrance to the Louvre, critics came to be won over when a fullscale model was erected. The daring of Parisian projects has brought us the sublime - the aforementioned Louvre entrance, and the vile - Les Halles, for example.

The book is written so that you need have no background in architecture to find it thought-provoking, interesting and very, very readable.

I left it at home when I recently visited Paris (well you can't take everything), but enjoyed delving into it again as soon as I returned. If you can fit it in your luggage, it would be a great companion.

Paris As Revolution: Writing the Nineteenth-Century City
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (June, 1997)
Author: Priscilla Parkhurst Ferguson

Paris as symbol of the revolution
An excellent literary analysis of the city of Paris, starting from 1789. The book reviews Balzac's conception of the "flaneur" as a self-possessed watcher, and then explains how Modernism seeps in and corrupts, with Baudelaire and Flaubert. Miss Parkhurst Ferguson is not merely literary in her analysis, however; this book is also part Urban study, and part history of the conception of the city of Paris; all these elements are combined with great interest. The chapter on Hugo is a bit dry, perhaps because I don't care for Hugo; and I wished that she would have written more about Zazie dans le metro than the few ending statements she makes. But overall a great read for someone interested in the history of Paris, French modernist lit, and conceptions of the Revolution(s) of Paris and France.

Paris Collection French Doll Fashions & Accessories : French
As a novice french fashion doll collector, I found this book to be very helpful. I learned about the different types of fashion dolls and what to look for before I buy one. It also gives great detail on the dolls accessories, especially their dresses. I also like the fact that this book contains patterns of original french fashion gowns so you could make your own reproduction of the real thing.

This book is the only thing you need to pack.
This is an amazing book. I had 24 hours to spend in Paris, it was my first trip, and I don't speak French. With the help of Paris Confidential, I stayed in a great hotel, had one of the best and most memorable meals of my life, found my 'signature scent', and bought a great suit.

The format of the book is well organized and the index is broken down by neighborhoods, as well as by subject. So it is really easy to use. Also the book is nice and slim, so it's easy to carry.

I left my Paris Confidential with a friend in Strasbourg. I'm buying another copy, although I have no immediate plans to return to Paris. I want to thank the authors for a wonderful 24 hours.

Composer Ned Rorem has an exquisite way with a song, distilling musical essences to provide miniature masterpieces that linger in listeners' minds. He is also, as these diaries prove, a facile, if somewhat undisciplined, writer. And someone mired in self-absorption. At the time Rorem wrote his diaries, he was distinctly callow and obsessed with being "pretty"; yet the picture that emerges of him in his youth is not entirely attractive. The book will be of interest to those who are curious about the lives of significant composers, both for the small insights that he shares about his composition process and for the details of his life and the circumstances under which he wrote his music. His vividly sketched picture of gay life more than a generation ago widens the audience of this book. --Sarah Bryan Miller

Learning Ned Rorem - Lesson One
I came about Rorem 'round about-ly -through videos of interviews and liner note snippets - and was greatly intrigued by his blatantly keen mind. While learning the music, I put the 'word' into it all and it plunged me even deeper. Between his impish candor and spotless observation one experiences a fine chunk of a true artistic pursuit. Also, his reflections on the two worlds of Paris and New York and the creative flora and fauna therein are priceless.

turned outward to the greatest city in the world instead of inward to her own rhythms, this is Stein's best book.
