an inexpensive yet effective lab book for undergraduate orga
An inexpensive, yet effective lab manual for undergraduate organic chemistry. The students do not have to buy a hard cover text, full of colors. The reagents used are cheap and, generally, available at low cost. There is great variety of experiments- some are standard syntheses, some are kinetcis, but above all there is a great qualitative analysis chapter. The techniques illustrated in the first few chapters are essential in running high yield syntheses. An excellent set of appendices with subjects like % yield, how to make solutions and how to balance a redox equation. This is a book where one learns how to do expts. without necessarily running a very expensive lab.

Over the ocean to Paris, or, Ted Scott's daring long distance-flight

One of the best of the early avaiation series books.
PLOT IN A NUTSHELL: Upright, hardworking-but-poor orphan Ted Scott dreams of a career in aviation while he toils away at his menial job in the mammoth plant of the Devally-Hipson Aero Corporation. His foster father, Eben Browning, was swindled by Brewster Gale, so Ted beats up both of Gale's obnoxious sons a couple of times (An act repeated in most of the other stories as well. You'd think they'd learn to steer clear of Ted!). He then impresses/saves a couple of rich (and apparently very lonely) businessmen, Walter Hapworth and Paul Monet, who wine and dine him and then send him to flying school. After a series of aerial adventures both at school and in the service of the Post Office, one of the rich guys builds him a plane, Ted makes a grueling solo flight to Paris and becomes a world famous hero.
THE END

Comments: The Ted Scott series was written to cash in on the aviation craze that swept the nation after "Lucky Lindy" made his famous flight. This story is so close to recounting that flight and Ted Scott so closely resembles Charles Lindbergh, it's a wonder Lindy didn't sue for royalties!
The Syndicate must have had it's ghosts working overtime on this volume, since it hit the stands not long after Lindy landed in Paris! Aviation stories had become a staple for "Boys" series' starting not long after Wilbur & Orville made the first flight, however, there were several other aviation series started around this time (Andy Lane, Slim Tyler, Randy Starr among others) but, for my money, the Ted Scott series is superior to them all.
This story is well written (surprisingly so, considering the fact that it was rushed into print). It carries the reader along with the right blend of action, adventure and a bit of mystery. I don't know if kids back then were smarter but the prose is certainly superior to that which is written to the same age group today.
Ted is a likable hero; loyal, brave, intelligent and self-effacing to a fault and, despite the fact that Ted has amazingly bad luck in the air, his adventures aren't too improbable.

One of My Personal "Holy Books"
This book strikes a welcome balance between Neo-Pagan fluff (no, it's not ALL fluff, but you know what I mean) and unreadable scholarly tomes (no, they're not ALL unreadable, but you know what I mean). Ms. Paris' psychological insights into these myths are incredibly compelling. Are the gods "real?" Who knows, and does it matter? Their effect on us -- as archetypes and symbols -- is deeply significant in either case, whether you're a modern maenad or an interested agnostic (or both). Ginette Paris' book addresses that significance in ways which are entirely relevant and applicable to modern life, guiding the reader on the path of pagan grace.

An outstanding contribution to Art History studies.
Black and white and color pages capture her art while accompanying surveys reflect on her life, times and achievements. William Lieberman's Painters In Paris is distributed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and accompanies an exhibition of the same name of paintings by artists of the School of Paris. Works from the Metropolitan's collections trace painting history in France from 1895-1950. A recommended pick.

Excellent for children 8-12
Follow the life of a French child in the city of Paris. You discover the city and also people's daily life. Presented from the point of view of the child, this book is easy to read, very well illustrated, simple without being simplistic. A must-read for children 8-12 - great for elementary school libraries.

An Evocative Remembrance
This is an unique book even among the many written about Paris. The late Julian Green was the only American member of the Academie de France --- and he wrote these exquisite, tender memoirs of Paris in French. The books lays out the French text face-to-face with the superlative English transation [is it possible that the translator is Green himself using a nom-de-plume?] --- this slender volume will repay you with many many joyous moments, particularly if you read French. Not only is it a superlative book on Paris, it is a superlative gem of lyrical writing.

Paris for everyone!
I was at a rummage sale last year and noticed someone was selling a bunch of guide books. I saw Fodor's Paris 99 and could not believe they were practically giving it away. I could not stop looking at it when I came home. It is such a complete book on Paris. The beginning covers all your basic info on how to get there and what to take. The rest is filled with good maps. It considers people of all budgets with it's hotel and restaurant listings going from low to expensive. It even has some helpful phrases in the back. I will definitely use it on my trip to Paris.

A Fabulous Guidebook for Art Lovers
I just returned from Paris and I used this terrific guidebook more than any other. It's perfect for any art lover and is easy to use. It covers all of the museums of interest in Paris, major ones like the Louvre and the Musee D'Orsay and the more minor ones like little gems such as the Musee de l'Orangerie and the Musee Marmottan. For each museum it gives a photo and a one page description of each of the major works of art in that museum. It also covers major places of architectural interst like the Eiffel Tower. Included also are maps, a seven day touring plan of museums and monuments and a ten page introduction to the art history of Paris as well as museum opening times.
