The massacre at Paris

VERY UNDERRATED!
I CAN NOT understand why this play of Marlowe's was never popular. In this chilling masterpiece, not a single page is wasted. This play offers several dramatic passages. Guise's soliloquy in scene 2 is especially powerful. Another aspect of this play that Marlowe handles with the utmost of genius is Anjou's rise to King Henry III, and later his fall. Throughout the play, Guise presents us with chilling moments and his death is handled with dramatically appropriate lines. The reconciliation between King Henry III and Navarre also demonstrates Marlowe's mastery of literature. Finally, King Henry III's death really helps us to see that Marlowe paved the way for Shakespeare in every sense of the word. If you liked Marlowe's "Faustus" and "Edward II," you WILL NOT want to miss this one!

May '68 and Its Afterlives

The fables and foibles of history
This is a smart and lively book about how French politicians, media, and other groups have coopted the Paris strikes and uprising of May '68 to their own ends. The ways in which that event--the largest strike in French history--transformed French and European culture are explored by Ross, a formidable presence in the area of French cultural studies. Smart, succint writing--richly anecdotal yet theoretically sophisticated--this book should soon prove a classic in modern French studies and in Sixties culture.

A humorous mystery of the highest order.
I think humorous mysteries are wonderful, and know of none better than this. Set in Paris between the wars (what Paul calls Paris's best American period) the Homer Evans mysteries have broad humor and a distinctive wit. Add an inspired selection of funny names, a varied and eccentric cast of characters, word-play of a highly entertaining order (as when one Lvov Kvek is described as "a former colonel in the recent army of the late Czar"), and "Mayhem in B-Flat" is well outfitted for humor. Even the chapter headings are funny.

As for the mystery involved, there's hardly anything comparable for bizarre complications and circumstances outside Alice Tilton's (i.e., Phoebe Atwood Taylor's) Leonidas Witherall mysteries and one of her Asey Mayo mysteries, "Spring Harrowing".

Even if possible, a plot summary is inadvisable, as aeshtetic merit and mental health might equally suffer. However, a list of the some of the elements of this tale may give an idea of its dizzying effect: the theft of an extremely valuable violin called "The Sinner Without Malice"; corpses that hardly seem to have noticed their own passing; a significant error in a game of checkers; forged fingerprints; a lady baritone; tarantula fights; barratry; thugs known as Dental Jake and Godo the Whack; a fiendishly dangerous new poison; a greasy thumbprint dating back to around the time of the Norman Conquest; a permeable wall; a revolutionary glue; and Hyacinthe Toudoux, medical examiner for the Prefect of Police.

Only three of Elliot Paul's Homer Evans mystery titles seem to have been in print in the last thirty-five years or so. That is unfortunate, for Evans and his friends inhabit a distinctive, strange, and funny world. To get there go past "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" and Dortmunder country, then hang a right as you pass "Charade", aiming toward "The Last of Sheila". Halfway to "The Thin Man" wave at Tish, enter Paris, and fall down laughing.

My grandchildren love this book!
Often in life things turn out different than we expect or plan. Marsha Arnold has given us a story that deals with this experience in a delightful way. Metro Cat takes us on a fun journey and provides opportunity to teach children about coping with and making use of life's unexpected turn of events. I just bought two more copies to give as gifts. My grandchildren love this book! I love this book! I'm keeping one in my home library. It is quality literature, a relevent theme, loads of fun, and darling illustrations. What more could I ask for?

Metropolitain: A Portrait of Paris
Published in Hardcover by Phaidon Press Inc. (15 September, 1994)
Authors: Matthew Weinreb, Matthew (Photographer) Weinreb, and Fiona Biddulph
Amazon base price: $31.50
List price: $45.00 (that's 30% off!)
There's a magnificent colored glass skylight pictured on a double spread in this book that was photographed not in a cathedral but a department store. On the very next page is the highly distinctive tower of a steam laundry. Such is Weinreb's uncanny eye -- and lens -- for the details that escape most people. The boulevards, bridges, palaces and archways that Parisians prize are here, but so are the weird and wonderful things they often take for granted about their great city, like the skull with bat's wings that sits on the corner of a tomb in the Pere-Lachaise cemetery. Weinreb has special fondness for the many gargoyles that decorate the keystones of arches.

Beautiful photographs with a focus on architectural detail
If you are the kind of person whose travel photos contain lots of shots of interesting doors, building facades and architectural details you should find this book delightful. The book contains a large number of color photos and also some very interesting short paragraphs on the history of building styles and design in Paris.

Great Guide!
I used this guide for almost everything in Paris! Though it's not really a book of reviews and/or recommendations, it has practical information on almost everything there is to do in Paris. Things like cost, location, and a great deal of history and items to see at the site are covered in detail. Also has lots of references as to where to get more info. I lived in the city for several months, and when i felt like going sightseeing i always packed it with me. The maps are pretty good too, and hey- it's Michelin... they're known for their guides.

Awesome Paris Pocket Map!
I love this map!! It's small, and folds up easily to pocket sized, yet it covers all of the key areas of central Paris. It shows all the major roads and arroundissement boundaries, but isn't cluttered. And best of all, it has cute drawings for all important tourist spots, so it's easy to get a feel for what you can see on a stroll from here to there.

An old copy I had (which I used over and over till it literally fell apart) had a write-up in English about each major tourist spot on the back, but this one says it's in French. That's OK for me, since I can get by, but if you'd prefer English, you may want to look for this map's English-language cousin.

Have fun and bon voyage!

Jim
