experiences of childhood
This wonderful book fills the gap between the visit of the magi and the finding in the temple without creating fictious events. I recommend this book to parents so children become familar with what Jesus's everyday experiences as a child must have been like. This prepares children to hear the parables. It also gives parents a model of early religious education by showing them how the events of everyday life shape our adult image of God.

Exquisite sensual stories ...
What a fabulous book of six stories set in Paris in the 1920's long before womens lib and at a time when made no bones (forgive the pun) about equality and keeping lovers just like their husbands might do.

Anne Marie Villefranche is an exciting writer (actually a pseudonym for an unknown to me British female author) and her erotic stories are actually interesteing. The discussions between the lovers have a point to them and show intelligence making the book an easy read.

The stories although told through the eyes of mostly the male hero, allows us to get the full flavour of the multifaceted female mind and her thoughts on sexuality, eroticism and all those oh so delicious sins of the flesh.

One of the best and most exquisite erotic short stores that I have ever read is in this collection, 'The Solicitude of Pauline Deveraux'. The story deals with a very young Roger takinging his date Gisele home for the night. Gisele advises Roger in the taxi that her mother is out with her boyfriend, probably for the night, and she is now ready to allow his amourous advances finally reach their goal. Once at home and on the sofa doing what comes naturally, the two young lovebirds are surprised by Giseles mom, Pauline. Mom tells her daughter to go to the bedroom as she will deal with her in the morning, and she then sits down beside Roger to give her a piece of her mind, and, as we find out a lot of other things as well.....

I loved this book and hope a reprint run is around the corner....

A feast for the eye and the mouth
I highly recommend this international cookbook whether you are a sophisticated cook or an enthusiastic beginner. I made the walnut and veal stew with the upside-down rice to complement my Christmas dinner. The golden crust of the rice was awesome. The star meringue made an impressive and easy dessert. I've made the salmon tart both as an appetizer and as a light lucheon meal. The step-by-step instructions make cooking simple. The end result for every recipe I tried was both a feast for the eye and the mouth.

Vintage Vidal
In his memoirs, Gore Vidal calls this novel the beginning of his literary voice. It is a joy to read, and appears to have been a joy to write, for this youthful, vibrant, charismatic novel flows effortlessly through cities, affairs, and misadventures. Colorful characters abound -- early on there's an uproariously matter-of-fact description of our hero's casual fling with the wife of an American power broker. The mythological superstructure of the book -- glorious youth flirting with power, wisdom, and love -- is light enough for Vidal's characters to prance and amuse. It's a nice departure from his oh-so-serious historical novels and a welcome, balletic hop into Vidal's fantasies. He wrote this novel around 1950 -- when peace and prosperity were just re-emerging after wartime. Read this book, if only to see Gore Vidal exercise a masterful light touch years before he turned bitter.

Living Art to the Fullest
M. le Baron Olivier d'Anglade is growing weary of his wealth and respectable political position among the Parisian aristocrats. Richard Rosendale is equally tired of his failure as an avant-garde sculptor. Through an astonishing turn of events - and after several bottles of fantastic French wine - these two unlikely protagonists discover the true art of living and dying in the magical Paris of the 1930's. Mr. Schwartz's novella is intelligently written, full of surprises, and a charming delight.

Jeanne's uncommon insight
Jeanne Hilary is definitely one of the most exciting young photographers out there. No one reports on the human condition with more insight. Her subjects have energy, soul, and character. Jeanne can make a yawn or a backward glance look beautiful, and she can take the mundane everyday and make it heroic. Pay attention. You'll see her name again.

Djuna Barnes must have had great fun writing and illustrating this book. It's a lively lampoon of her lesbian chums of Left Bank Paris in the 1920s. The main character, Dame Evangeline Musset, is based on the notorious dyke Natalie Barney. Structured as a month-by-month almanac in a style that owes as much to Shakespeare's comedies as to any literature of the intervening centuries, Barnes's book follows the Dame's amorous, often naughty, adventures.

An extraordinary book. Great fun reading and rereading it.
This is a funny book written in a poetry like style. The amusing illustrations are inspired on old wood engravings. But it's not only the story an the illustrations that are interesting. The book itself, the way it was published and distributed is also verry interesting and even romantic. In 1928 'spicy' books weren't allowed, not even in Paris France. So it was privately published in a small edition of which about 50 copies were hand coloured by the author. All books were sold by Djuna Barnes and some frends in secret along the Seine. With the help of Natalie Barneys copie the 1972 edition contains an explanation of the names used in the story and who they were in real life.

Le paradis, indeed
When you read this book, you forget about reality. The frustrating "spleen" and the marvelous "paradis" balance each other and allow you to read Baudelaire's soul and mind. He has a unique way of giving a deeper meaning to every word. When you grasp this meaning and enter the world of this book, you feel like the "paradis" is not "artificiel" anymore, but that you're in it, living it, and that it's more real than anything.

Le\Pieton de Paris Suivi de D'Apres Paris

Author: LeonPaul Fargue
Amazon base price: $19.95

The Night Life
"Le Pieton de Paris" is a wonderful collection of prose poems--short, poetic observations--in which Fargue describes his beloved city with all the passion of an art lover in the Louvre. Fargue's Paris is the city "de l'entre-deux-guerres" (between wars), the Paris of the 1920's--the artistic mecca of writers such as Joyce, Pound, Stein, and Hemingway. Fargue was an eccentric noctambulist--a night-walker--who understood the Parisien "after hours" like none other. His Paris is a gloomy metropolis of trains and truffles. In his writings, one can almost hear the lilting airs of an accordion, the clamor of cups onto saucers . . .
