Kennedy's work is the best I've read on writers and Paris. Each of his close readings of what Paris comes to mean to key twentieth century American writers--Stein, Hemingway, Miller, Fitzgerald,Barnes--goes to the heart of their works, unraveling the mysterious impact of place on art. For that is his theme, the effect of place on who one is and what one writes. He also knows that it is not to the city of Paris only but to the "city of writing" writers long to belong. Kennedy traces well each writer's vision of Paris and its expression of both artistic identity and desire.

A brilliant and extremely readable book.

Nos muestra las incongruencias en el diseño de la vivienda y el medio ambiente habitable, cuando no existe una politica sensata por parte de las autoridades y como esto afecta a la práctica proyectual de un país entero. Pero ante todo, el libro nos da elementos clave para poder pensar en una arquitectuta "futura" más apropiada con nuestro medio ambiente y cultural, y sobre todo una arquitectura apropiable.

After falling in love with Paris, I took my mother there for her 60th birthday. So, when her 61st birthday rolled around, I bought her this book as a reminder of those wonderful days. Trouble is, I didn't want to part with it so I had to buy my own copy. It's filled with gorgeous photos of the interiors of some of Paris's most-loved buildings and several lesser-known but just as beautiful. A great gift for the Paris lover or any lover of architecture, history, and beautiful spaces.

If you would like to view your own tour at your own pace, this book is great. To avoid being hearded like cattle with a guided tour use the helpful map enclosed, with all the site areas clearly marked.

If you only took one item into the Parisian streets, this would be it. Paris is a city to be seen by walking, but being an old city, the streets can be small, tight, meadering, and dense sometimes. Don't be embarrassed to pull out a map on the street corner to get your bearings, and when you do, pull this map out.
It is plastic laminated, so spills or rain or wear won't smudge the details. Refolds easily in a different pattern so as to keep area of interest to the fore. Great detail, easy to read, very useful. There is a subway map on the back, it is workable, but when you get to Paris, tear out a full page subway map from one of the many tourist magazines lying around.

A fabulous guidebook for art, nature, science and music lovers. Complete with historical backgrounds of each museum along with samples of collections. Insight Guides had done a great job in providing readers with museums' operation hours/days. It's easy to use maps are useful in locating the numerous museums and galleries. A star that will help you plan a perfect vacation! Don't forget to check out other Insight Guides' museum series for other European cities. You'll love them.

This is an eminently readable piece of scholarlship. The information is well-organized, well-expressed, and utterly fascinating. Congratulations to the author. Well done!
