The Bird Who Was Afraid to Clean the Crocodile's Teeth!
This is a darling, funny, rhyming book about a bird who's only way to eat is to clean a crocodile's teeth. It is a great story to teach us not to judge people, or in this case a crocodile, by their appearance. I think this is a topic that children in our society need to be taught, as well as a lot of adults. It's a charming, cute story with delightful illustrations. My 6 year old loved it.

Expertly examines the pros and cons of various methods
Birth Control For Christians: Making Wise Choices by Jenell Williams Paris (Associate Professor of Anthropology, Bethel College, St. Paul, Minnesota) is a book of facts and choices, presented without judgmental overtones, written expressly to inform Christians of all denominations about the various means of birth control. A fertility awareness instructor with Fertility Awareness-Twin Cities, Paris expertly examines the pros and cons of behavioral methods, barrier methods, hormonal method, IUDs, and male and female sterilization -- however, abortion is not discussed extensively since Christian denominations generally oppose it. Birth Control For Christians: Making Wise Choices is a highly recommended resource on the subject of family planning and birth control technologies for all interested Christian couples.

5 miaou rating, 4 paws down!
Before Peter Gethers met Norton, the publisher, screenwriter, and author was a confirmed cat-hater. Then everything changed. Peter opened his heart to the Scottish Fold kitten and their adventures to Paris, Fire Island, and in the subways of Manhattan took on the color of legend and mutual love.

Very Good For The Cayman Traveler
We downloaded this book and took it with us on our laptop. The authors cover each part of the island individually. There are maps, recommendations for lodging, eating, diving and snorkeling. They give you a broad overview of what to expect on your trip, what to take with you, reference materials for doctors and banking, etc. Basically, everything you need to know. Combine this with the weekly entertainment magazines available on the islands and you'll know more than some locals.

Cezanne to Van Gogh: The Collection of Doctor Gachet

Vincent van Gogh's Portrait of Doctor Gachet sparked considerable and somewhat notorious debate when it was sold at auction in 1990 for the record-breaking sum of $82,500,000. In Cézanne to Van Gogh: The Collection of Doctor Gachet, readers find out how, if one painting could be worth so much money, this one might be it. Regarded by his contemporaries as "one of the liveliest and most sympathetically original of men," the physician, art collector, and amateur artist Paul Gachet (1828-1909) was a friend and patron to a number of struggling artists including Cézanne, Pissarro, Monet, Renoir, and van Gogh. He invited them to make use of his attic studio in Auvers, France, and in return was often rewarded with fine examples of their work. This arrangement eventually afforded him one of the most legendary collections of impressionist and postimpressionist art in the world. And although scholarship on the artists he knew is enormous, it is rare to be made privy to the complex set of circumstances that go into the nascence of such an important collection.

Van Gogh completed the portrait that would immortalize Gachet, who had treated him for depression, only weeks before ending his short and tumultuous career by committing suicide in 1890. He wrote, "I painted a portrait of Dr. Gachet with an expression of melancholy, which would seem to look like a grimace to many who saw the canvas. And yet it is necessary to paint it like this, for otherwise one could not get an idea of the extent to which ... there is expression in our modern heads, and passion--like a waiting for things as well as a growth. Sad and yet gentle, but clear and intelligent--this is how one ought to paint many portraits."

Cézanne to Van Gogh is published in conjunction with an exhibition of the same name at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, during the summer of 1999. For the first time, the collection amassed by Gachet, originally unveiled in 1954, is being exhibited outside of France, and in this catalog it is published in its entirety. The collection contains paintings, drawings, prints, copies, and such souvenirs as the palettes of Cézanne and van Gogh, as well as the actual still-life objects seen in many of their paintings. This volume includes informative essays by both French and American curators as well as a wealth of new information, including the detailed results of new technical studies using macrophotography and x-radiography. A 328-page hardcover overflowing with 500 illustrations, 117 in color, Cézanne to Van Gogh is both the fascinating story of a unique collection and a major contribution to the study of postimpressionist art in late-19th-century France. --A.C. An excellent exploration of a man and his collection
This exhibit took place in New York, Paris and Amsterdam and focuses on Dr. Paul Gachet, Van Gogh's doctor in Auvers-sur-Oise during the last two months of his life.

Always a controversial figure (partly due to his arguable incompetence, partly due to the questionable authenticity of some of the works in his possession), this book is a wonderful exploration of the man and his collection. The authors, both frequent and well respected contributors to Van Gogh scholarship, explore Gachet and his collection (now owned by the Musée d'Orsay in Paris) to an incredible level of detail. The amount of research behind this book is staggering and it makes for an extremely compelling and satisfying reading experience.

An outstanding photographic documentary of modern Paris.
This photographic survey of the Seine examines the structures and spaces of Paris, focussing on the architectural styles of the city and examining both old and new sites. Changing Paris is an artistic rendering of Paris architecture which could also have been featured in our 'art' section but deserves mention here also as a special documentary of modern Paris.

The most complete source of the Paris Opera House
I purchased this book quite some time ago as a result of my 'Phantom obsession.' Although I found it expensive at first, it has such a wealth of information that you will find something new each time you look at it. It even talks about the underground lake and how it was dealt with during construction, all the decorations and tons more. Definitely the best book in my collection! I also just finished a research paper on this treatise of architecture, so if you want to see an overview of the book, you can read it at http://www.GrandFoyer.com

Christian Dior: The Man Who Made the World Look New

First published in 1993 in France, this English translation of Marie-France Pochna's biography of Christian Dior appears in time for the 50th anniversary of Dior's debut in the world of fashion and coincides with a retrospective of Dior's design work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As a biography of the designer, Pochna's book is complete and telling, perhaps not swept up high enough in the airy realms of fashion to please devoted couture mavens but highly informative and interesting for general readers interested in Dior and his impact on the fashion industry. The business of fashion rather than the artistry of Dior's designs is where Pochna directs much of her attention. After all, the marketing and branding that Dior helped initiate was innovative, so discussions of licensing agreements and the development of designer accessories, along with Dior's youthful development and inspirations, blend into a provocative profile of this fashion great.
