Gorgeous.
I picked up this book in passing while purchasing some other, more publicized, titles. This one blew the others away. There is a quiet sense of formality, even in the lyrics, that draws you into the rhythm of the book--it is easy to to read from beginning to end and feel as though you've been carried along by the work's momentum. Erudite, but never difficult or without grace, the poems invite readers to notice the delicate intermingling of the world we observe and the worlds we imagine.

There is a haunting aesthetic power at work, culmintating in the sequence "A Realm of Vague Delights." The images stay with you:

"...a lady found entangled in the weeds,/while sky is darkening, and gulls have flown/and salt is blowing through the corridor" (Wedding Night for the Count of Sand).

"My table's plates disheveled, wine-soaked bread,/then open sky, the stars, oracular,/envelop night, and then the morning's fruit,/at breakfast, humming with a subtle fall" (The King as Concubine).

Simply the best poems I have read in ages.

Sublime
In Gosetti-Ferencei's immensely intelligent first book, the poems enter a Europe of the past and the imagination, a lost Europe, with its dead masters and decaying masterpieces, indeed its burnt palaces, its faded philosophers. Yet the poems' elegiac landscape thrives with a vitality drawn from the sublime
beauties of nature and the intricate forms of poetry itself (sonnets abound in the book, among other examples of Gosetti-Fercenei's prosodic virtuosity). From its first lovely lyric, through its dark and masterful sequences, to its final embrace of life ("More light!" Goethe is claimed to have cried at his
death), After the Palace Burns proves that "joy, though strained, is undeniable."

Outstanding -- Best Travel Boodk Format
This is the best travel book there is ....I too have had the same book for 9 years and its information is still the best....I wish they would do an update....

This has been my favorite and most practical guide to Paris
I've been using this book since 1984. The small size and clear maps make this easy to carry. My current copy is so dog-eared and I've been looking for it's update. By chance, I ordered the Travel & Leisure Paris and found it to be the same format, similar size and with the same clear maps (copyright 1997). For those of you looking to update your Paris guides the new book could be a good substitute for an old favorite. I leave for Paris again in 2 weeks, and I'll pack the new book along with the old for further comparison.

And the Wisdom to Know the Difference, Conversations with Residents of San Francisco, Paris, and Minsk

a book of great value
In this book, which is based on 63 dialogues with residents of Paris, San Francisco, and Minsk, Belorus, Francis Feeley has given us remarkable descriptions of ordinary people and events in three cities. This comparative study of urban life ( enfanced by revealing photographs of the people interviewed ) is recommended reading not only for students of French society, of which we are a part, but for students of western societies in general, where similarities and differences are not well-defined in the minds of many. In today's context of " globalization", this book might well remain a essential text for analysing the evolution of convergences and disintigrations of social units in western societies, especially in the three urban centers represented in this book.

AN EXTRAORDINARY BOOK ABOUT DAILY LIFE IN THREE CITIES
This book is a comparative study of daily life in three historic cities. Students of sociology, anthropology, and comparative social history will benefit from reading these first-person accounts of individual aspirations, disappointments, and triumphs.

The cultural differences between the French, the residents of the former Soviet Union, and the Californians are interesting, but what these great people share in common and their attitudes facing daily life are valuable reminders of why we have survived as a species.

A Wonderful Book About an Art Masterpiece
Daniel Weiss has written an outstanding book on one of the great masterpieces of medieval art - Sainte Chapelle in Paris. His analysis and discussion tell us about this marvel of stained glass, and how it was built by King (Saint)Louis IX to house the Crown of Thorns and to make it the Christian equivalent of Solomon's temple in Jerusalem. Scholarly but readable, and beautifully illustrated.

Fascinating, informative, thorough
Dr. Weiss, a noted professor and scholar, has made a specialized subject very accessible and interesting. His thorough research, smooth writing skills, and thoughtful analysis are on display on each page. This is not just a book for art history experts - it should be widely read and enjoyed.

Gourmet Does It Again
Gourmet consistently releases books of the absolute highest quality, and their Best of Gourmet 2002 book is no exception. The photographs are so beautiful I frequently enjoy flipping through the book and browsing at the pictures whether I plan on cooking or not. The collection of recipies is vast, including plenty suitable for anyone from a novice to a chef. The menu combinations are brilliant and convenient. The Best of Gourmet series are treasures for any cooking enthusiast's collection, and no serious cook's collection is complete without them.

Exquisite Paris Collection
Celebrated the mag's sixtieth, they featured Paris dining with some unique touches. First, three meals served by some famous Parisians: Picasso, Brancusi and Man Ray. Then there is what is my favorite, a section of specialist menus with recipes for such as "A Breezy Summer Dinner," and thanksgiving. These are special, just the think when one wants a coordianted menu without all the indiviudal fuss of finding and creating. For example, the Summer Dinner was just outstanding, with Crabmeat, Apple and Mango Salad on cumin Apple Crisps, with Roasted Striped Bass with Chive and Sour Cream Sauce, Spicy Garlic Potatoes and Zucchini finished off magnific with Berry Puffs with Orange Muscat Sauce.

The layout and photos are first rate and so are the recipes. Neat stuff in here, e.g. Butternut Squash and Hazlenut Lasagna, Ricotta and Candied Fruit Puddings, Pear and Hazlenut Frangipane Tart, Snow Peas, Portk and Cashed Stir-Fry, Spiced Roast Goose with Dried-Fruit Pan Sauce, Cornmeal Crusted SoftShell Crabs with Cilantro-Lime Tartar Sauce,Lamb and Eggplant Pastitstsio, and Pumpkin Chiffon Mousee with Gingersmnap Crust.

This book is not for the timid or shy cook, but for those who seek adventure in dining and cooking to really impress those tastebuds with adventurous, intensely flavored food, this book will be a most welcome addition to your collection.

First-rate marriage of two genres
The time is 1940-41 and the focus of this engaging and engrossing yarn is Nestor Burma, captured and interned by the Germans -- along with most of the rest of the French army -- following the blitzkrieg and the government's capitulation. Before the war, Burma ran the Fiat Lux detective agency in Paris and his investigative skills are needed again in finding the origin and identity of an amnesiac fellow prisoner -- and also the killer of an old friend and associate murdered before his eyes at a railway station. The cast of characters includes journalists, cops, lawyers, and crooks -- both big-time and two-bit. The German occupation is always in the background but it's not really part of the story. Rather, this is a classic "noir" murder mystery, complete with a wrap-up scene where everyone involved comes together to hear the detective explain the clues and identify the murderer. This is a sort of minimalist approach to the graphic novel form: Straight story-telling in black-and-white, each bit in its own rectangular frame, emphasis on the words rather than artsy effects. And it's an excellent piece of work.

beautifully translated by jean-marc and randy lofficier
this masterpiece of european comics, based on the leo malet detective novel, is impeccably drawn by Jacques Tardi and beautifully translated by Jean-March and Randy Lofficier. For mature readers due to a few questionable panels of nudity and contextual violence, it takes the reader into the heart of WWII occupied France with style, tension and detail. A not-to-be-missed graphic novel mystery.

A great book to learn about Paris!
I read this book before I went to France with my family. It was a great story. I loved the map at the end of the book with descriptions of where to find the places that they talk about in the book. We tried to go to them all. My sister and I liked to help plan how we spent each day.

Great book!
We bought this book for our children before we went to Paris this year. We thought it would be a good idea to have them read something other than a travelguide before we went(which we read) because they find Frommers and the like quite boring. They really enjoyed the book and it gave them things to look for while we were in Paris that actually have some (even if imginary) meaning for them other than their parents telling them it was historical. The glossary and guides at the end of the book were just as good as the rest of the book.
