A Scenic Technical Manual
Mr Kouros' tome combines a scenic tour of the game and a technical manual on how to play it. His chapter on the various releases alone is worth the cover price. Other insightful items include a behind-the-scenes peek at PBA Tour conditions and a thoughtful piece on the mysteries of the "mid-roll", probably the Holy Grail of all serious bowlers. Heavy stuff to wade through - then again it's never easy to haul pure gold out of them mines. I've read through the book a couple of times now and there is always something new to catch my attention. This book is the next best thing to a full-time coach. If you love the game, you should get a copy to keep.

Best Bowling Book Available
I've read virtually every bowling book available (and quite a few that are out of print) and this is by far the best.

It is incredibly detailed, advanced bowlers will love it, new bowlers may be a bit overwhelmed at first.

Par Bowling: One of the best books on bowling
Par Bowling is one of the great books on bowling. Kuros goes through all the intracies in the game. Well worth reading and studying. It has helped my game tremendously. The book does need to be updated to more modern conditions and it would be wonderful if Kuros could expand more on the ideas and even use more elaborate graphics. To some, the book may seem too detailed, but that is its strength. Kuros does a masterful job of breaking down the elements of good bowling and develing into them. He also is wide open to what's good bowling and what is not and also where one can be flexible. I especially enjoyed is talk abot "mid-roll" - a real secret to putting good action on ball.

Explores a grand golfing legacy
Virginia has long been home to some of America's finest golfers. Virginia golfers have won 16 major championships and 169 PGA-sanctioned events while playing in 27 Ryder Cups, 9 Walker Cups, and 2 Solheim Cups. Virginia is boasts six golfing resorts that rank among America's top 1000, while dozens of the state's golf courses are part of almost every list of the finest places to play the sport in this country. Veteran golf writer Jim Ducibella's Par Excellence: A Celebration Of Virginia Golf explores a grand golfing legacy of players, courses, tournaments, and stories. The informative text is wonderfully enhanced with the stunning photography of Ross Franklin. From Nancy Lopez to Sam Snead, Par Excellence is a splendidly presented tribute and history that is entertaining and informative reading for all golfing enthusiasts.

Attention all golfing buffs
If you're a golfer or you have a golfer in your house, this is a must for Santa's stocking on Christmas morning. The book lives up to its subtitle of being a celebration of Virginia golf, but would be appreciated by golfers in all the states and even around the world. Jim Ducibella is one of the nation's finest golf writers and he captures the history and tradition of Virginia golf in loving detail. He writes vivid portraits of the state's finest golfers as well as giving graphic descriptions of the state's best courses. Whether you're a duffer or a scratch golfer, this is a book you will want to read from cover to cover. And the pictures by Ross D. Franklin make you feel you right on the course. Don't miss this book.

A hole in one!
Just about everyone I know has played or is playing golf. I myself play about four to five times a year and in Massachusetts there is very few PGA rated courses. Par Excellence shows you the world of golf as it is played in a Virginia and these are some beautiful courses.

I was very impressed by not only the stories but also by the pictures. Full color photographs of the courses show how rich in beauty the state of Virginia really is. Some the courses have hosted several PGA events and the storied past of the courses are a true golf fans dream.

The book also covers some of the more famous golfers to have played at these courses, with men like Curtis Strange, Lanny Wadkins, J.C. Snead, Sam Snead and others. The book is only 240 pages but it is clear that author was able to capture the essence of the sport and of the state.

Also included in the book is coverage of over 15 courses and some of the more notable events that have taken place at each course. For a true golf fan this book is the perfect gift. Sports Publishing Inc. has a web site loaded with other books on an abundance of sports topics.

For Anyone Wha Has Been Through It.
Why wasn't this book written before?
What an insightful, honest and heart-wrenching book. As a child of divorced parents I found that many of the essays echoed the same feelings I felt and still feel. The essays speak from the heart and I reccomend it to any child of divorce. This is not only for Generation Xers but for anyone who has lived through the breakup of their parents.
Thanks to Ms. Chin for bringing such a diverse group together to share their stories.

Real Insight
A friend picked this book up in a bookstore and handed it to me. I took one look at it and thought, "no thanks," but I did read a couple of pages of one of the essays and it really drew me in. I bought it and kept reading. I was surprised to find how compelling all the stories were and how different. Matt Brigg's may be my favorite and the editor Ava Chin's is great, too, but all of the pieces had something original in them, something I found very true. My parents are still married, but a lot of my friends come from divorced families and I think this book gave me insight into their lives like never before. The writing is terrific and the stories are sad -- and funny, too. Well worth it.

Get it for Mac
This book is wonderful. The stories in it are superb. I expecially liked the story by James Browning called Mac. I really brought out what it must be like to be divorced. A must have for anyone who has or is just into this subject.

Present and future relationships can become healthy
I read this book during a time of major upheaval in my relationship with my wife. Near divorce I read this book and realized how my parents' divorce adversely affected me. In ways that we today think are normal we sabotage our relationships and carry on the legacy of our parents' failed relationships. Unless we identify what happened to them by asking historical questions about our parents' life before, during, and after marriage, where they came from, what secrets lay in their family closets, we are going to repeat them. After all, it is what we recognize as "normal". Well, divorce is not normal. Fundamental problems that existed in our parents' relationship and our current relationship follow identical patterns. Recognizing them and understanding their effects on our current relationship skills (which were not modeled in a healthy manor) helps us define, change, and proceed with new and healthier attitudes about being married. Especially when children are involved, we should make every humanly possible effort to save the relationship. As spouses, we are both different and similar. We found each other for reasons we weren't cognizant of. We were looking to fill our unmet needs. In today's world where divorce is so accepted, fragmented and drastically unhealthy behaviors are being taught by parents who divorce. It is always easier to divorce than to heal a relationship. They take work, but they are worth it. This is not to say that those who are abused in any way should stay with an abuser. But as human beings we can change.

I called Gloria Hochman and pleaded with her to reprint the book. She said they were thinking about it. And I am very, very grateful to her and Dr. Beal for helping me save my self and my marriage. I think that this should be required reading when an adult child of divorce is about to get married or if he or she is contemplating divorce.

Don't let the mistakes of our parents ruin our relationships and perpetuate the cycle. Stop the cycle. Heal from the losses of divorce, absence of a parent, depression of the custodial parent, and unhealthy self nurturing children have to endure during and after the process. Co-dependency can develop and rear its head in unhealthy relationships we choose because it feels "safe", "normal", what we are "used" to.

By the way, the changes I have made in my life have been so monumental and healthy, that my wife and I are pursuing a healthy, caring, supportive, accepting, honest, (many more superlatives) relationship now more than ever. And the lack of respect I once held towards my parents has healed and I have been able to carry on relationships with them that have been healthy, without emotional blackmail, emotional incest, or blaming. Dr. Andrew J. Boshardy

Reminded me the results of our actions may actual outlive us
I recommend this book for all those who have experienced the divorce of their parents or are comtemplating divorce from their current spouse. Our response to accepting the truth about ourselves and our families and taking corrective changes in our behaviour can impact our ability to overcome the emotional disappointment of divorce.

Who knew?
Shortly after my husband of 31 years divorced me for a much younger woman, I stumbled across this book, A Grief Out of Season, in the library where I worked. I was stunned to discover a book on this subject, but boy was I glad I found it. I had been unpleasantly surprised to discover that not only had my husband divorced me, but our three grown children as well - unless they would have a relationship with him on his terms. This meant unconditionally accepting his new wife and her four younger children as their new family! Our children's negative reaction to this and the resulting estrangement from their father was a real source of grief to us all. In the book I discovered that our family was not alone, and drew much comfort from the many personal stories that were related therein. The authors really did their homework, plus their personal experiences were invaluable. I immediately wanted to get this book for each of my grown children and was disappointed to learn that it was out-of-print, so I had to be content with relating to them, second-hand as it were, as much of what I had learned as possible. Since then I have been checking with Amazon.com periodically to see if the book has been re-printed. (This at their recommendation.) I hope it will be soon. Lots of people have much to gain by reading it - grown children and their parents as well!

This is an excellent book for adult children of divorce.
As someone whose parents divorced when I was 24, I can say that this book was the best thing that happened to me during that time. Contrary to what those who have never been there believe, adults whose parents are divorcing feel as much pain and grief as young childrenm, and this book lets them know that others have been there and felt the same. It offers insight on many different situations that may occur in later-life divorce, gives practical suggestions, and explores the feelings that children of such divorces share. It is written in real language, not psychology-speak, giving it a humanistic feel. This is the only book published on the subject of adults whose parents divorce in later life, and is a must-read for those adults.

The Love They Lost : Living with the Legacy of Our Parents' Divorce

The traditional family is no more: half of all marriages today end in divorce, and approximately one-third of children under the age of 18 live with only one parent. Yet while a multitude of books have been written about children of divorce, few show a split's effects on these children as they grow into adults and attempt to forge their own romantic and familial relationships.

Stephanie Staal, a newspaper reporter whose parents divorced when she was 13, tackles this issue not by presenting studies and recommending solutions or policies, but by sharing the stories of 120 "Generation Ex-" adults whose parents divorced when they were children. These are the kids who grew up in the '70s and '80s, when divorce was becoming increasingly common. These are the kids who are now adults longing for intimacy and connection, but fearing commitment and expecting failure, abandonment, and hurt.

"For my generation, divorce has taken on the social proportions of a Great Depression, a World War II, or a Vietnam in influencing our lives," writes Staal. "Divorce struck in the privacy of our own homes, shaking our beliefs about family to the core." The path to healing for these Generation Exes, she believes, lies in recognizing the far-reaching effects of divorce, and in learning--often through the experience of others--how to overcome the trauma of divorce to fashion satisfying lives and relationships.

Like Hope Edelman's Motherless Daughters, Staal's eloquent words shine the light on a massive social issue that has been explored from almost every angle possible, except for the one that perhaps counts most of all: from the mouths of the babes who experienced it. --Nancy Monson

Thank you for giving us a voice!
I'm so glad I found this book! For a long time I have been trying to figure out how my parents' divorce 25 years ago has affected me. The stories in this book and the author's insight gave me a comforting "legitimacy" for my feelings and helped me to verbalize them. It made me realize that I'm not alone. Staal discusses many issues that arise during and after parents divorce, like how money is often equated with love, how all family relationships change, how the history of a family is revised. She describes why many adult children of divorce usually show three different types of behavior in their romantic relationships: "the nester," "the wary investor" and the "commitment-phobe." Immediately after finishing the last page, I ordered copies for my mother, my father, and my sister with the hope that we can start to talk more openly about what happened in our family. I don't usually buy self-help books, but this book isn't like that. It's beautifully written. The author includes her own emotions and personal experiences from her parents' divorce, and some of her memories were so sad, I cried. I never felt like she was preaching or telling me there was something wrong with me. Rather, I felt like I was talking to a good friend who could understand where I was coming from. Within the pages of this book, I read passages that could have come from my own journal. I heard my own voice. It is a must read for all adult children of divorce - or anyone whose life has been touched by divorce.

Exactly what I needed to hear.
I bought this book as a divorcing mother trying to help my children through this as easily as possible. Seeing the results and lasting effects of some of mine and my ex's actions has helped me hold onto my resolve to avoid subjecting them to constant conflict as much as possible.

I highly recommend this book to divorcing parents as well as children of divorce. It's like having a crystal ball and being able to see some of the effect you might be having on your children while going through this difficult time. It also gave me insight into what my kids might be going through but not willing or able to share.

The Love They Lost - The Understanding I Found
This book is truly a one of a kind. I have long searched for something, anything that I can relate to about divorce and I was so happy to find The Love They Lost. Stephanie Staal has written a honest and insightful account of what it feels like to be a child of divorce from separation to remarriages. She uses her own experiences to take us in the world too many of us are familiar with, and then shares with us the findings of her numerous interviews with adults that grew up in divorced families. Yet the book is much more then sharing stories, it provides comprehensive thoughts on how being a child of divorce affects more then just your childhood. It ends on the thought that no matter what happened in your past, your future is up to you. This book opened my eyes and it gave me the language to express my feelings towards my parents divorce. I am so thankful I read this book for what it has done and continues to do for me.

please bring this back to print
My siblings and I got this book for Christmas in 1978. I would have to say it is one of my favorites from my childhood and I have very fond memories from it. I expressed how much I loved it to my mom so she gave me our used copy last year for Christmas so I could read it to my little boy. My copy is very used and damaged. I so badly wish this would go back into print so I could buy a brand new one for my son and future children.

A Childhood Memory Forever
This book has been a family childhood favorite for me and my siblings. We are between the ages of 27 and 34 now and still rave about Socks For Supper. We would talk about how we used to reinact the story while reading the book. If it was the wrong kind of cheese in the fridge, then so be it. It always gave us a feeling of satisfaction, acceptance, and that the characters in the book could be any one of us. It's hard to find books that keep you close at heart, with yourself and with the world. Socks For Supper makes you realize that you need to be grateful for the things you have and the people around you.

this is the best!!
A man and a lade got milk and chees for socks then the man had no shirt and then the people made a shirt for Christmas.

Nice completion of an Austen remnant
Only 11 of the 30 chapters of this book were actually written by Jane Austen. However, the completion made, though somewhat livelier than I am used to from Austen, fits in quite well with the start that had been made.

The plot is extremely light compared to Austen's other books -- there are indeed, some very annoying characters, but what ill-spirited characters there are give no real distress to the heroine of the book, as is usual in the other books. Many of the "comic" characters are allowed to show some improvement (which is odd compared to such Austen creations as Mrs. Bennett, or Robert Ferrars), but who knows? The 11 chapters written by Austen seemed written in a very light spirit, and perhaps something like this novel would have been the result.

I think it a very good read.

An Unfinished Masterpiece, Such a Tragedy That Jane is Dead!
Every loyal Janeite must read Sanditon. It was destined to be her greatest work, but unfortunately she stopped working on it and died shortly after doing so. Sanditon is unique in its setting,a small seaside resort, and its characters. Jane Austen continued in her sucession of "deficient" men by the name of Edward (those who have read Sense and Sensibility or Love and Friendship know the other two)but, this Edward is perhaps the worst man that she ever created because he "considers it his duty" to seduce women. Do not be repelled by the villany of Edward though because there are many wonderful and deep characters to be found. The Parkers are very amusing. Who could fail to be amused with a trio of Hypochondriacs? There is also the visting Charlotte, the unfortunate cousin Clara, a wealthy young heiress of mixed racial background, and several other characters. You will yearn for an ending (of course as a fragment it does not have one)and if you are like me you will want to know more about Sydney, Mr.Parker's brother who is quite frequently mentioned and praised by the Parkers. Sadly none of the continuations of Sanditon are perfect or seamless as some may claim, however, I believe that the ending by Anna Lefroy is the closest to the intent of the author.

Excellent carry-through of Austen style
