Origami: The Art of Paperfolding
Published in Paperback by Harperperennial Library (April, 1992)
Author: Robert Harbin
Amazon base price: $10.00
Used price: $1.45
Average review score:

A book worth finding
Although it's been out of print for a while, Harbin's book on origami is still a book well worth finding. It has many of the standard patterns in clear, easy to follow illustrations, and produce objects particularly useful for party decorations, party hats, and gift boxes. There are also a number of animal patterns that would make nice Christmas tree ornaments; as evidenced by the yearly tree with origami animals displayed at the NY Museum of Natural History!

Playtime with my grandaughter
I looked for Shirley Temple paperdolls in the store with no success. I was so excited to find the Boston Museum paper dolls. The paperdolls are just great. After watching Shirley Temple films with my grandaughter for years - we now can play together and act out different movies. It's so much fun to see her face light up when she plays with the paperdolls.

We love changing the dresses. This is such an inexpensive but "hours of fun" gift. I'm going to buy the other paper dolls that are for sale. Hope more will be made!!

The Origins of Digital Computers: Selected Papers

The definitive source material for computer history
There are a bunch of books about the history of computing, but this one is unique -- it reprints original papers from Babbage through EDVAC and EDSAC in the late 1940s. Some of the papers are a tough slog, since the terminology is unfamiliar, but there's no better way to get inside the heads of the people who invented all this stuff. And what's really amazing is that by 1948, they were designing recognizably modern computers. If it weren't so overpriced I'd say every programmer should have a copy.

The Other Lover (Phoenix Poets(Paper))

8 reasons to buy The Other Lover
1. Because of the music. (Gerald Stern says, "There is some strange, some delightful, some outrageous music here.")

2. Because of the dirt. So much hydroponic poetry out there nowadays--poems subsisting proudly on nothing but water and air. Smith's poems have their roots where they should.

3. Because of the work, the politics, the pleasure, the real places & dreamed release, and all the other people outside and inside the "I."

Here's a piece of a poem with a title taken from Roethke, "I'll Make a Broken Music, or I'll Die": "If the four boiled men on my block / had speech beyond the wet kiss / from the imperfect embouchure / of their lips on the bottles of the shamrock- / emblazoned Tokay, and if this / emptied oil drum fueled by jilted furniture / could be their mouth, then they could sing / of the passing into darkness / with the perfect pitch and modulation / of silence and how it feels being / what's collected in the winds / and not the song. / / Of the almost-songs we are, this / voiceless one is the loudest."

4. Because these are the fierce and beautiful "almost-songs" of the other lover, the one who loves (hurt or be hurt) whatever might be left out of the voice, riding over it, sliding under it, "a shadow boxer, a small / class struggle, a mad and fearful girl, a plural."

5. Because these poems are hungry and so are you.

6. Because Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman never slept here, and you won't sleep either.

7. Because, come on, you're curious about what makes a book a finalist for BOTH the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize.

8. Because of the music.

Aging Humor is Ageless !
Over What Hill ? is another very entertaining short novel by Effie Leland Wilder. It touches your heart and then makes you laugh. The book is written as a diary in which Hattie shares the her thoughts and the events that happen at FairAcres retirement center. The point of view of an eighty something with a sense of humor is refreshing. If you have to choose between this book and Out to Pasture (But Not Over the Hill) then buy Out to Pasture. This book is the sequel.

Outstanding journalism history.
A superlative and engrossing history of the New York Herald, the New York Tribune, the merged Herald - Tribune, and the rest of the New York newspaper scene from the mid 1800's to the 1960's. Fans of journalism history will love it. The author shows a slight liberal bias in his choice of adjectives but this is a minor blemish.
