Short on plot, but long on ideas
Pompey Casmilus is a secretary living in London in the 1930's. In this book, she describes her thoughts about love, work, friendship and the Germans, amongst other things. If you're looking for a plot this isn't the book for you, but if you want emotional honesty and a startlingly original (and up to date) viewpoint, then go ahead and read it. Don't let the book's surreal style put you off - there's plenty of thought-provoking material in there.

The world knows Georgia O'Keeffe for her monumental paintings of flowers, shells, and sun-drenched New Mexico landscapes. She also worked on a smaller scale in watercolor, pastels, and charcoal, experimenting with themes and ideas. Fifty-five of her drawings are illustrated in O'Keeffe on Paper, which accompanies an exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe. The images work on several levels: viewing what at first seem brightly colored, jewel-like abstractions, with titles such as Pond in the Woods and Portrait of Paul Strand, we suddenly become aware of more complex, realistic forms. Witty and accessible, O'Keeffe's drawings remind us to recognize significance and beauty in our daily surroundings. The book's supporting essays are well written and useful. The first, which places O'Keeffe in the context of her teachers and colleagues, is an excellent survey of the early-20th-century American avant-garde; the second explores the evolution of O'Keeffe's ideas, developing her youthful question, "If one can only reproduce nature, and always with less beauty than the original, why paint at all?" The final essay is a detailed analysis of the materials she used. An extra dimension is given by photographs of O'Keeffe at work and some illuminating pictures by artists who influenced her. Reflecting a statement by the critic John Canaday quoted early in the book--"In a drawing artists give us at full strength, but with minimum elaboration, the essence of whatever they have to say"--the images in O'Keeffe on Paper are deceptively simple but very satisfying. --John Stevenson

A wonderful change.
This book is outstanding. It provides the reader, or viewer, with the opportunity to enjoy and study many of O'Keeffe's works, in watercolor, pastels, and charcoal drawings. I was very satisfied with my choice. I searched and searched for a book that contained works other than her standard oils and watercolors, that have been so available in other books for years. As an art student, this one fits the bill as a great book to study one of my favorite artists and her varied use of techniques and mediums. Who else could make an avocado look so asthetically wonderful. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the work of Georgia O'Keeffe. You won't be disappointed.

Startling
Mr. Noguchi's first book still startles me. I read it when it first came out and I return to it regularly. Here is a book of lyrics that tells the story of Kenji Takezo and his overwhelming passion for the deep blue sea. An American coming-of-age story, a surfer's story,it gracefully chronicles a young man's tricky relations with the force of gravity and the thrill of speed. Noguchi's Pacific is like Twain's Mississippi--an elemental, allegorical presence. The poems are tightly wound and often very funny, and yet there is something understated and deft that is beguiling. A kind of poignance and dignity permeates the wildest adventure of the hero. I love the stillness at the center of what roils and moves these poems, and I love the clarity of this book like I love to breathe the spring air. If you don't buy this book, go to the library. Or steal it. A seriously dazzling thing.

On Line and On Paper: Visual Representations, Visual Culture, and Computer Graphics in Design Engineering (Inside Technology)

Thinking (or Not) with CAD
Dr. Henderson provides a rich understanding of how real engineers really integrate pencil and paper with automated approaches. Extensive on-site studies with a clear eye help overcome the hype of CAD and highlight the many ways that visual cognition expresses itself. Those involved in developing systems to support engineering (especially design engineering), specifying and acquiring those systems, or supporting them would be well advised to read this book. The systems that we do build and buy need to work with how people really work; Henderson gives a rich description of how designers design.

Engineers who have not be enamored of CAD will find their case sympathetically presented. Those whose careers have changed may have a better appreciation of why. Those who manage, train, and support engineers are the ones who most need to read this book. If you sell CAD systems, you should read this so you know what they say about you after you leave. Those of us studying practice and the role of technology might have asked for a few more tables and comparisions to help us keep the different stories and companies straight.

If you like to read about design (that is, you're a fan of Henry Petroski's The Pencil), you'll enjoy the discussion of visual culture and the origins of engineering drawing customs.

If you are not used to reading research, you might want to skip the first section (or come back to it later).

Miscellaneous Editorial Reviews
"I would not be surprised if this volume eventually earned the status of a classic in its field . . . . [It] remind[s] us that, given the freedom and generative uncertainty of open-ended conversation, learning is often built on surprises" (Robert Gundlach, from the Foreword)

"Sophisticated in design, powerfully framed in theory, and unique in its scope" (Arthur Applebee, publisher's review)

"Opening Dialogue provides a kind of grounding that I think is extremely important at this point in the course of inquiry for a sociocultural perspective" (James Wertsch, Washington University, publisher's review).

"Opening Dialogue should strongly influence the way educators think about classrooms and learning. . . . The study has much to say to teachers, as well as to researchers and theorists" (Melanie Sperling, publisher's review).

"This little book should have a very big impact. It gives the results of the 'largest ever study of classroom discourse and its effects on learning'-112 eighth- and ninth-grade language arts and English classes comprising 1,100 students for each of two years. . . . [Nystrand's] book makes a very big contribution to our understanding of classroom discourse, and to English curriculum. It should be widely read and pondered and heeded by teachers, researchers, curriculum-makers, and teacher educators. That US students should endure another century or two of the English teaching Nystrand found so pervasive is a frightening possibility" (David R. Russell. (1998). Journal of Curriculum Studies, 30, 490-493).

"This study is noteworthy not only for its rich and detailed descriptive findings, but for actually linking the variables of classroom discourse to student learning" (Jo & Susan Sprague, Communication Education, 47, 1998, p. 300).
