If you love Mark Twain, this is a necessary book and an extremely enjoyable one. Expertly edited, the letters are as interesting to read (if not more so!) than Twain's fiction. It's impossible not to be drawn to this witty, brilliant, sarcastic, amazing man. His letters shine a light upon his soul in a way that his fiction doesn't always do. I think the most interesting section are the letters from San Francisco. For anyone who admires the greatest American author, this will win a deserved place of honor on your bookshelf.

I bought this book because I enjoyed the first volume of Twain's letters so much, I became hooked on this series. I wasn't disappointed, this volume is even better than the first one. Though it covers only one year, the letters to Livy, his wife, make this a treasure trove.

This book has several chapters which are fairly easy to read for those persons who do not enjoy "math"; the concepts in this book will be stimulating to those who wish to undertand why Human behavior is oftentimes so "unreasonable" and beyond belief. For example, how can one explain human behavior when the same person buys a pack of cigarretes and a cure for smoking at the same time? Why is it that a bright physician will go down the primrose path and become an alcoholic? The answer to both of these puzzles lies in the concepts of "meliorazion" and the "matching law", which in a nutschell can be defined as the proportionate allocation of behaviors to different reinforcement rates. Example:In a given space of time(ie,one afternoon)Mary will spend about 30% of her time with Ann, 50% of her time with Tom and 20% of her time with Robin. All this is done "automatically" and without conscious effort from Mary's part. The matching law has "matched" her behavior proportionately to the amount of reinforcement that Mary gets from all these people. Melioration is the concept that guides one's behavior to what is reinforcing. Behaviors distributed across time(ie,learning of tennis, becoming a drunk, a loafer,ect)tend to stabilize around the matching law which is guided by "melioration" and not "rationality". The book and its concept may revolutionize Economic consumer behavior and psychology's understanding of behavior. The matching law has been substantiated by several hundred experiments with animals and human subjects. Dr.Herrnstein's untimely death was very unfortunate.

The author introduces the main lines of discussions in epistemeolgy and philosophy of mathematics in a very understandable but comphrehensive way. It is a brilliant reference book for the subject which also contains so-far unpublished articles of the author.

Donald Jack has written some of the funnies scenes I have ever read. Bandy's last flight in his Vimy is a classic. The series is 5 stars all the way (until the last two books). If you like humor and/or great historical fiction (they aren't often found together!), you will love these books.

My son loves these soldiers. There are 22 historically-researched characters, with names and affiliations attached, either French or English. They are very colorful and he thinks they are a BIG step up from the usual plastic soldiers. Make believe at its best for the precocious child whose creative play goes a step beyond the norm.

I absolutely love this book. The contributors to this book are highly intelligent and thoughtful human beings, as is the editor. I would recommend it to, well, anyone...feminist women, (pro)feminist men, ANY men, intellectuals, and so forth. I particularly like the chapters by Kimmel (well, I like ANYTHING written by him), Hopkins, and Pronger. A truly amazing read.

At last! A book about psychiatric practices that encourages critical thinking. Most media stories uncritically parrot statements from psychiatric sources without presenting contrary perspectives. Articles in the popular press usually ignore critical issues. Mental Illness: Opposing Viewpoints helps to correct the one-sided imbalance. Especially recommended for students considering careers in the mental health field.

Having read Mr. Bonsall's compilation of papers regarding the mesolithic period in Europe, I can say, without a doubt, that it is one of the finest pieces of literature that I have ever seen. As a layman, the technical jargon is a bit hard to understand but this only serves to stimulate the mind. The renderings of the artifacts are beautiful and precise giving them a sense of life and more than make up for the tech-talk. I have searched long and hard for information on this period in Europe's prehistory and feel that in this work, I have found all the information I could need. Mr.Bonsall is to be commended for an excellent job. I would recommend this title to anyone seeking quality information on the subject.
