Why Disability Matters to Justice
I reviewed this book for the spring issue of Tikkun Magazine. In short, I believe it is a feminist classic, opening our eyes to the obvious. The simple point is that neither the disabled nor those who care for them can participate in social life according to a standard of rational, autonomous individuality. The disabled often don't have the autonomy, the caretakers don't have the time or energy. Kittay's book opens up a whole field of discussion: how to reorient our concepts of jutice and community in light of the obvious facts of the different ways in which we are dependent on each other, and on what such dependence can cost those who take it on. Essential reading for ethics and social theory.

Excellent First Reader
Lucky Bear is one of the first books my first graders read. It has just a few words on each page, very good picture clues, and a cute story. I highly recommend it!

A great work from a good scholar
Priestly did an outstanding job editing the Luna papers. I've been using this work as a primary source for my MA thesis in History, and this is a gem. Priestly transcribed the Spanish from the archives on one page, and gave a pretty good English translation on the facing page. If you're interested in early Florida history, then this book is definitely one that you should see.

Spare, haunting, elegant
The cover says it all: a sumptious array of beautiful young men being devoured by a creature half-human (the human immuno-virus in the guise of the minotaur). This is the most breathtakingly original poetry, full of humor and heartache, loss and anger and joy. How the author manages to fuse all of this into these small, sonnet-like poems is beyond me. Imagine Kafka, O'Hara, Rimbaud, Rilke, Stein, Spiegelman and Lenny Bruce inhabiting the same bed. It's an orgy of voices, a choir of the most sardonic and most holy kind.

What a book!
This novel has to be one of my top ten. I am a huge fan of irony and this play has plenty of it. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes English literature or, like me, who thinks that irony is entertaining. My favorite part of the play is when Macbeth becomes enraged at the witches and damns himself in the ironic phrase in which he damns "all of those that trust him." By damning everyone who trusts the witches, he actually damns himself. I would also recommend this book to anyone who is interested in English history because this play tells the reader a lot about the Enlish culture at the time of Shakespeare. I enjoyed this novel emmensely and I hope you do also.

Invaluable analysis of postwar prime minister
Harold Macmillan looms large in the political history of postwar Britain. A maverick backbencher in the 1920s and 1930s, he rose rapidly in the Conservative governments of the 1950s, first as Minister of Housing, then as Foreign Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer before succeeding Anthony Eden as Prime Minister in the aftermath of the Suez crisis. As premier he governed a prosperous nation that faced a slow, inevitable decline as a great power, a decline that he managed with skill and dignity before resigning due to illness in 1963.

In this book, John Turner offers an examination of Macmillan's political career. Like the other volumes in the "Profiles in Power" series, this is not a biography of its subject; while Turner incorporates biographical details into his study, his focus is on Macmillan the politician and how he used the power of his various offices to address the problems facing Britain. For those looking more for an account of his life, Alistair Horne's two-volume official biography of Macmillan is the work to turn to instead.

Yet Turner goes beyond the parameters of the series to produce an invaluable analysis of Macmillan's career. Unlike Horne, who relied on Macmillan's personal papers, Turner uses the papers in the Public Record Office as the basis for his analysis. The picture which emerges from this archival plumbing is of a successful prime minister, skilled in crafting his public image and farsighted in his management of a nation adjusting to the realities of the postwar world. The result is an essential supplement to Horne's work (which was published before most of the official papers were opened to the public) and required reading for anybody seeking to learn more about this important postwar political figure.

A paper doll for adults!
Very funny (though rather mean-spirited) paper doll cut-out book. Numerous costumes for a variety of situations for Martha that we will never see on her TV show! Martha seems to be able to do just about everything so, this book was bound to happen. We are presented with a few things she has not thought of yet or, at least, chose not to share with us! Glad I bought this one. When I have a bad day, I drag this out and have a good laugh. One of these days I will cut out the outfits and display Martha, at her "unbest". Such fun, and a great gift for a friend that has everything.
