Bob Oeste's tour de force of a novel takes the reader from the early days of McCarthyism and the Alger Hiss case to the near-present (1989) and Berlin just before the Wall fell. The story focuses on former HUAC (House Un-American Committee) investigator Joe Pope and his former boss, Richard Nixon, who calls Pope up with one last job to do. Apparently, there's one last roll of microfilm hidden on the farm of Whittaker Chambers, Hiss's chief accuser. So Pope sets off with a few of his buddies to find a document which could "rewrite the history of the 20th century." Oeste brilliantly interweaves the present-day chase with the earlier tale of Pope's days with the Hiss investigation, where the HUAC investigators are "cutting a few corners" (to put it mildly.) Along the way, we meet Nixon, Hiss, the leader of East Germany, and a host of other suspicious and shady characters. If you like spy stories, comic thrillers, historical fiction, or political satire! , you'll like this story. If you like all of the above, you're in for a real treat. I can't wait for Oeste's second book.

This was an ambitious endeavor by the authors to view everything related to Last of the Mohicans...all the films, comic books, television shows and specials...and to analyze why it has lasted, why the myth is important to american culture, why the book keeps being produced. The wealth of detail was fascinating.

woa. i read this, and it is one of the best papers i have red on latin american law. rowat deserves serious props as does jose asigarraga. although this isn't a book most people would find entertaining, it gives a background as to the latin american insolvency systems.

I thought the clothe were very pretty. The artist did a great job drawing the clothe and the features on the girls face. It is very colorful and fun to play with the clothe and specially since I can stick over and over the clothe on the doll. I love this book especially because I love the Victorian Era.

Please feel free to email me if you want specific information about the quality of this wonderful collection of essays by Dr. Gilligan, but for now all I want to say is that this book continues Dr. Gilligan's beautiful and insightful suggestions as to how healing can take place in the counseling room. These essays aren't as poetic as "The Courage to Love"- nor are they intended to be- but they are filled to the brim with incredible descriptions of Gilligan's psychotherapeutic experiences.

I feel compelled to recommend HIGHLY Dr. Gilligan's audio tape set entitled "The Problem is the Solution". As in all of his work, these tapes are a great example of how the healthy aspects of postmodernism can be integrated into the enduring psychodynamic, strategic and brief therapy conceptions and how this integration requires the inner work and practice of the practitioner. Gilligan weaves in gorgeous poems, compelling antidotes and his wonderful sense of humor throughout these twelve tapes.

And, of course, "The Courage to Love: Principles of Self-Relations Psychotherapy" should be required night-time reading for anybody in the field.

My 4 year old daughter loves this book. She became interested in lemurs and lorises through watching Zoboomafoo. This book gives information on a variety of lower primates that is scientific, but is presented in a manner that young children can understand and will find interesting. The photographs are excellent and each animal section is short, so you do not lose the child's attention. It does not cover every kind of animal within the larger groups, but it does give a good selection of each species. Sorry Zoboo fans, there are no Sifakas in the lemur section. However, the lemurs included are interesting and easily recognizable to young children (especially if they have seen Happy Lemur Day).

I saw the play of "Les Miserables" several years ago in New York and have never been as emotionally moved by any book or play. The story of Jean Valjean is a powerful and compelling story of social injustice and the power of love and faith that leads to redemption. It is a story told on a personal level of one man's journey, yet at the same time, also tells the story of oppressed people everywhere. Victor Hugo was a brilliant writer able to convey his personal and political beliefs through the use of this fictional tale. Kathryn Grossman's examination of Hugo's life and the literary and historical context in which "Les Miserables" is set, also demonstrates that she is a brilliant writer and historian who has thoroughly researched her topic and has a masterful understanding of the book and of Napoleonic and post-Napoleonic France. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who has read the book, seen the play, or heard the music and been moved by its power. By reading her book, this beautiful and important story comes alive with even greater meaning and significance.

While I wouldn't recommend this book for the casual reader who wants to know more about King Henry VIII, for scholars, it's wonderful to be able to see the original source documents that are so often briefly quoted in biographies.

"Homelessness and the issue of freedom," chapter 13 in the collection, is among the finest essays concerning the distinction between "positive" and "negative" approaches to freedom, a distinction often misusedby partisans of the New Right; in a similar vein, "Welfare and the images of charity," chapter 10, situates the provision of social welfare in the liberal tradition by looking upon it as essential to the noninitiation of force and the preservation of public order. Other chapters interrogate the Rawls's Difference Principle and the conflict between liberal rights and democratic majoritarianism. Though my own politics are quite different, I suspect, from Waldron's, I found this collection compelling and often convincing.
